Apple :: Replacing IMovie 08 On My MBP
Jan 3, 2009
When I got my new MBP with Leopard last May I was initially disappointed with iMovie 08, so I replaced it with the free download of iMovie HD from the apple website (more info here).
However, now I changed my mind and I want to put iMovie 08 back. Would I need to do a complete Leopard re-install or can I just use my discs to selectively install iMovie 08?it was easy to do just using the install discs.

I'm doing some light video editing for school and I'm going to need slow-motion effects but I'm pretty sure iMovie 08 (which I have) doesn't have that feature.
I read somewhere that iMovie 06 had it though, and Apple made it free to download for the people that were dissatisfied with imovie 08.
I can't find it anywhere on apple's site though. Is there another place I could download it from because I can't find anywhere? Or is there another free video editor for Mac OS I could download?

I tried to go to iMovie tonight to edit some videos, but when I went to import the video, it wouldn't import them. All it did was say "importing video," then it would say "processing video," and then just quit. It only attempts to import a video for about 15 seconds, then stops.
This is iMovie 08 from the iLife 08 suite.

iMovie not working after updating to 10.5.6
iMovie is saying Found a Camera Attached eventhough we don't have camera attached then it shuts down the program.
Does anyone know why all our computers are having this problem after upgrading the OS to 10.5.6 ?

Does anyone know how to capture a single frame in iMovie 08? I'd like to create a poster from a couple clips in iMovie but I can't seem to figure this out.

Has anyone ever replaced their battery on their ipod? I have a 5th generation 30GB Video ipod and the battery is terrible now that it is two and a half years old. I have seen a few different websites out there that have directions and sell the batteries... I trust I can install the battery from what I have seen on the videos but I don't know if I trust the battery some of these company's are selling.

just dropped my 15" MBP. My foot took the impact so no actual impact damage, but the underside scraped down a few drawer handles on the way down so there are two large scratches and some small dents on the underside.
Its mostly cosmetic I think - the computer seems to work fine, but the dents just irritate me. Is it possible to get hold of a replacement underside panel for these computers? Or do I need to send it off to Apple?

I had two questions about replacing the hard drive on the 1st generation (rev A) MacBook Air (with the 80GB hard drive):
1. I believe I read somewhere that it uses a not-so-common connector/interface. So, does anyone know where you can get the type of hard drive the rev. A MacBook Air takes?
2. Has anyone ever done this? Is it hard to get inside the case? Hard to swap out the drive?

I'm having some sort of buyers regret about a Dell Latitude D630 I bought in August. It was about $550 shipped through Dell Outlet. It's been great and I had intentions of taking it with me to Iraq later this year.
I also own a Dell XPS M140, which was bought through the Dell Outlet in 2006. I've only had one problem with it in three years and that happened about a week ago. The CPU began overheating with 100% usage in about 20 minutes. I tore it down, replaced the thermal pads with Arctic Silver and blew the dust out of the fan. It hasn't overheated since I did that.
My wife currently uses the M140 for movies, internet, email and school work. My fear is something is going to happen to it while I'm gone and she won't be able to do any school work. It's out of warranty so costly repairs. And she knows very little about computers to buy a good replacement.
Now I'm thinking about giving her the D630 and buying a 2.0GHz unibody Macbook. I'd love a 15" Macbook Pro but that additional cost isn't worth it to me right now.
I have owned a G4 Mac Mini and a Core Duo Mac Mini in the past. I use an iPhone 3g as a phone after getting mad at WinMo's terrible battery life and constantly needing to soft reset the phone. At work I've used a Quad G5 Power Mac and 12" G4 Powerbook somewhat extensively. I love OS X and think its a pretty OS. I also love Apple's design on all their professional products and I'm really happy to see an almost-12" PB replacement in the aluminum Macbook...................

I currently use a 15" MBP that I bought in late 2006. I only use it for surfing the web and word processing. maybe watching a couple of videos here and there but no where near any graphics related tasks. I do not play any games on it (as I got a PS3 for that).
I am thinking of getting a new laptop with the highest possible battery life. it seems that the new 15" MBP does not "really" last for 8-9 hours even on light work, but the 13" does reach the 10 hours target. that is mainly why I have chosen to go with the 13" version. now I'm down to two options, the white MB and the MBP. technically, they both got the same price (if you compare both with 4gb ram). the main questions that I need people around here to answer are the following:
1. First, can the 15" MBP really reach the 8-9 target?
2. is there a difference between 13" MB and 13" MBP other than the material which they are built from? (polycarbonate vs aluminum).
3. is there a difference between them in wifi reception?
4. is it possible to increase the MB's ram memory to more than 4gb?
5. is the white case of the MB a 'dust magnet' ?

I have just upgraded my old Sony Vaio VGN SZ370P to WIN 7 and I am very happy with it.
The computer still performs beautifully. However, I know that as a laptop its end is near (Three years and hundreds of thousands of miles.)
It is already running very hot, though that does not seem to be affecting it at this point.
My question is simple, I have noticed that the SZ line seems to have disappeared. It looks like it has been replaced by the Z line

on the Sony website but there is nothing about upgrading/swapping out the hard drives.
Is this possible to do and how

I am down to 1 GPU on my M1730, in the interest of replacing it , from the forum sticky these seem to be the options
XPS M1730
Nvidia 8700M (both single and SLI****)
Nviida 8800M GTX SLI
Nvidia 9800M GT SLI
Nvidia 9800M GTX SLI
(I assumme this list is complete still . i.e. no 260's or 280's available)
Other than Dell or EBay are there any other sites , suppliers that people know of who might supply one of the above
DELL want 340 + Vat for a sli 8700m and there is every so often a 8800M for sale on ebay but they typically want approx 500 pounds for it (anyone had experience of buying one?)
I am dubious about the 8800 as evidence suggests it runs hot so would prefer a cheap 8700m or a warrentied 9800M

I buy the SXPS 16 with a 4670 the minute it is released in Canada and configure it to as closely to my current config as possible.
When it comes in, I manually swap the HDDs from my current SXPS 16 to the new one.
Would this allow me to get around installing Windows and all my programs? Once I swap the HDDs and turn on the new laptop, will it boot up as if it was the old one, but with newer hardware?
And I'd just like to vent my frustration that I can't order the SXPS with the 4670 and a T9800/T9900 in Canada yet

I'm under the impression that the Studio XPS 1645 will be using a similar, if not identical, chassis to the 1640. Given that, how easy is it to replace the hard drive with a SSD?
I didn't bother with a SSD option on account of the price, but once the price comes down a bit I'm hoping to replace the drive and use the existing drive externally.
How much of a headache is this and what should I be aware of with regard to known SSD issues,

Well the worst happened and my trusted Dell M1710 powerhouse that I've had for several years was dropped into a tub of water. I've got the complete care warranty so I called Dell to get a replacement unit.
Well after waiting a little over a week Dell agreed to send me a replacement unit; however, since the Dell XPS M1710 is no longer in stock they're going to send me a Dell Studio XPS 16.
I was wondering if everyone here thought that was a fair trade or an upgrade?

My sister believes the fan has failed (again) in her Acer 5672wlmi laptop. Last time I replaced the entire heatsink/fan unit, but I can't find them anywhere anymore. I have, however, found a fan that's supposedly compatible...
Has anyone here replaced a fan in a heatsink module without replacing the heatsink as well? From what I remember they really seem to be built quite firmly together... but if the store says this is compatible I have to assume there's some way to take them apart.

I have a Vaio VGN-SZ61WN and I would live to get the HDD replaced with the one I've just bought. Thing is, it doesn't look too straight forward to me. The HDD is situated on the bottom left of the notebook when looking at the keyboard. There isn't a way in from the back. Just thought I'd ask before I destroy my notebook

if any of you dv4t owners have run into the same issue trying to replace your hard drive... I opened the hard drive cover, removed the 3 screws holding the drive in place, and tried pulling up on the metal tab (the one facing the inside of the notebook) but couldn't get the drive free... I've been struggling to get the drive out for awhile now without any luck. Out of desperation I used a pair of pliers to try and get a better grip on the tab, but all I ended up doing was bending the outer casing (not the drive) slightly. It's like it glued in there or something!

last summer I was given a HP Pavillion dv5 that had a little problem with his screen:
The part number of the piece is 484363-001, and it seems it has to be WXGA because of the resolution (1280x800). Is there any problem if it's WSXGA instead?

One of my headphone jacks on my M1530 is broken and needs to be replaced. Are those part of a separate board that can be hooked into the motherboard without the need of any soldering? I'd like to get this issue fixed, and don't want to send it into dell depot for repair. So if it's just a board that needs to be replaced, I'd like to replace it myself. If so, what would the name of this board be? I haven't had much luck looking through the forum or online.

After two years of using my XPS1530, I received an error or reminder message that I need to replace my battery.
It's still working though, but not sure what is the side effect of not replacing the battery immediately.
Do I need to replace my battery if it's still holding more than an hour or so?

I have a M1530, with the Dell 1505 Wireless N card installed.
To say the least, it is probably the worst card I have ever seen, getting no more than 6Mb/s on internal transfers (basically wireless G speeds) even though connecting at 130Mb/s.
I have a Dlink Extreme N DIR-655 router and it is pretty good, so I know it isn't that.
Looking at PCMIA cards on the internet, I suddenly realized that there is no expansion port on this system (or I am just stupid and can't see it), so I have to go with an internal card.
Is there anything I should be looking for when getting the new card? Are they easy to install?

I just got my hands a Studio 15 with great specs at the cheap, but with a pretty badly scratched up LCD lid. Has anyone attempted replacing the lid? Is it hard? I've opened up and replaced a processor, keyboard, fingerprint reader, ram, and hard drive before, but never an LCD cover. I'm kinda worried about the power button and wifi catcher, and I'm worrying I may not put the screen back the right way. This is supposed to be for my cousin, but I can't give it this badly scratched up.

I got a new Dell Studio 1558 a week or so back. Ever since I got it, I feel a constant vibration to the left of the touchpad.
After doing some research and asking some questions, apparently the Seagate 7200 RPMs have this issue. I confirmed it was the HD by putting the HD to sleep and the vibration would stop.
The best solution to me seems to replace the Seagate with a WD 5400 RPM HD. I have been looking at their Scorpio Blue for this:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...4&sku=A2436199
Will it work with the 1558? And, how do I go about setting up the laptop after replacing the HD?
I don't have any important documents that need to be transferred, but I am guessing I will have to use the Dell DVDs to setup Windows?
Thanks
