I held shift, ctrl, alt and the on button at the same time.
I just got my new MBP 15 last week (my first Mac!) and it is awesome. I just have one question right now:
I noticed on my gf's MBP (2007) that when you click on the battery icon, there is an option for better battery life or better performance, but I don't see that option when I click on my battery icon. I don't see this option under Energy Saver preferences either. I updated all the software the day I got the machine too. Are these options just automatic now on the new MBPs?
Got my self a new HP DV5-1110, Athlon X2, 3450.
But can anybody recommend any good monitoring software for Vista, 32bit?
On my desktop I use "dtemp", to show the harddrive temp in the sys tray, but dtemp cant read the hdd temp on my HP
And an another program for showing the cpu load or/and cpu clock in the sys tray..? tried NHC 2 pre 06, but it hangs when I go to settings to configure the program..
My GF just found a temp monitoring program for her Dell for free on line that always show her temps inside her laptop & its seems pretty cool & now I want one for my New MBP15.
What killed my last laptop was over heating issues..
I swung by the apple store recently, and checked out their 15" mbp (since the 17" wasn't/isn't in store yet). I put my hand over the palmrest to check out the keyboard layout and that particular laptop's left side palm rest area was pretty darn hot!
This brought up 2 concerns:
1) With the heat and the skin/oil contact with the aluminum surface, will that ruin the paintjob faster? is there even a paintjob or is the silver color the aluminum's natural and only color?
2) Regardless if the paint comes off or not, is there a way to make it cooler and more comfortable to type/game on? For those that play fps games or WoW, we all know our left hand is pretty much in the same spot, and if our wrists are constantly getting a spa treatment, it's not going to be very comfy. I know there was that ilap whatever thing you place under the laptop to diffuse the heat from concentrating on your laps, so I wonder if there's something like that for the hands.
my UMBP got way too damn hot. and was getting tired of the heat. So I started out just taking the bottom of the notebook case off and blowing it out. Then I started looking at it more closely, the fans have no direct access to fresh air intake. Yes I know the speakers/keyboard are meant for that. But the tinkerer in me fired up the drill press and with a 11/32 bit started making some small holes areound the fan intake and ram. Well my MBP now runs so much cooler before I was running 44-55C on mbp just idling and light web browsing. No I am so so happy to say my MBP is running at 35-40C. That is significant decrease in temps.
View 10 Replies View RelatedWhat exactly makes a CPU temperature skyrocket while leaving the GPU temp low?
Right now I am writing an essay on Word 2008, have a powerpoint open, this safari window, and uTorrent downloading torrents.
And my CPU temp rose to 83 degrees C after opening uTorrent.
Why does uTorrent cause such a spike in CPU heat?
I'm just curious if Mac OS X has anything similar to the Temp folder found in Windows?
Particularly during program installs, does the OS extra temp files somewhere in the HD?
Aside from the browser history and temporary files (which I can clear within the browser), are there anything else that I need to clear every now and then?
I have been playing with nvidia powermizer but as soon as i started scrolling down webpages, the gpu temp would increase. So i requested help and was referred to this thread: [How To] Use Rivatuner as a better "Powermizer" alternative
I followed the instructions but i was still getting mid 60's degress celcius on my gpu(i set it on low power 2d). I wasn't quite satisfied. After considerable research i found out a program called lubbo's fan control. There was a previous version released which was a fiasco. However, i noticed something. That one had a releae date of 20-jan-2010. I decided to try it and wow!! That is a keeper!!! I can select the maximum rpm of my fans, the minimum rpm. I can even go below 2000rpm (But i didnt risk it). The most interesting feature is that i can select what us the maximum temperature i want my system to be. I chose 60c and now, while i'm typing this, my gpu is reading 56c. That's the first time i'm getting a steady sub 60 temp. It isnt going less and it isnt going more than 56c. My fans rpm are at 5000 but while listening to a music or even using it without music, it isnt that disturbing. Also, it will kill your keyboard manager. Who cares and who needs it. We can control the keyboard from the bootcamp manager.
One last thing that i will add is that this software detects both gpu's (9400m + 9600m), a proof that the apple guys are being lazy to provide the gpu switching software. Tested working in w7. To make it start everytime you log on, just create a task and schedule it to run when you have logged on.

I have a Thinkpad Twist and after updating the Lenovo Settings Dependency Package to 1.3.0.24, I no longer have the 'Automatically optimize for battery life' option in the Lenovo Settings app, i.e., the battery is always fully charged.

I would like to use the battery optimization option, how do I get this function back?
I noticed that there were new updates so I went ahead and installed them. On restart, the gray screen came up and just sat there. I shut down and started up a few times and same thing. I restarted and held the option key down and it gave me the OS menu and I'm able to boot Mac OSX from there.
I'm going to try to set the default OS using Boot Camp to see if that fixes the problem.
Last year, when Apple released their new MacBook Pros in June, they only had a glossy version of the 15" model. Then in August, they came out with a matte version of the 15" model.
Now this year, Apple came out with only a glossy version of the 15" standard resolution (1440x900) model. I'm wondering if the same thing as last year will happen again - will Apple come out with a matte version of the 15" standard resolution model in a few months?
The matte display option is available today for 15" MBP on the Apple site.

I know that I can use the character palette to do this, but I'm looking for a faster way.
I actually do have to use a few Greek letters with some frequency.
I know there are a few:
Option+J = ∆
Option+W = ‡”
Option+P = ƒÎ
and so forth, but what about the other "biggies" -- alpha, beta, and gamma, for starters? Can't seem to find 'em; either there are no such codes, or I'm just not creative enough.
I thought 4 finger gestures were a feature of snow leopard, but I do not see the option to enable them in settings, also, where is the "Incompatible Applications" folder that incompatible apps are supposed to be moved into?

I just received my MBP 13" yesterday. So far I love it. However, I noticed an issue. Last when I put my MBP to sleep, it had about 30% battery left. However, when I woke up this morning and opened my MBP, the battery went down to 13%.
When I put the laptop to sleep, I had a pdf file open along with itunes (paused). I have never used Mac OS, so maybe I not doing something correct. Also, I noticed when I open the lid (after I put the notebook to sleep) it just goes directly back to the desktop as opposed to on windows it prompts to the login screen when waking it up from sleep mode.
I am looking into getting one of the new macbook pro's. Though I must say the non removable battery does concern me a bit. In past laptops I have had, I without a doubt saw increased battery wear and tear when I left the batter in the laptop while the laptop itself was plugged in. I completly destroyed a battery on my Dell laptop by doing this for about a month when it was asking as a desktop. I took the laptop which used to get around 4 hrs of battery life and then after a month it got no more than 15 minutes.
So after that I always took the battery out, so now with the new macbook pro's you cannot take the batteries out, so wont the batteries wear down to nothing faster than if you took them out when not using them?
I've run into this issue twice already... once on 1 computer and another on this same one. It's the one where the battery is not recognized and there is an "X" where the battery icon is.
I've done all the Software Updates, Batter Update 1.3, and tried resetting the PRAM. So far none of these have worked. Now I'm out of ideas. Before after going thru those steps, the problem would be fixed... not so this time.
I know they extended the warranty and were replacing the batteries for free, but not sure this one would be covered under that.
Is there a way for me to drive 2x displays and the screen on the notebook at the same time?
There is HDMI, VGA and DisplayPort on this notebook. Can I use HDMI AND DisplayPort AND the display on the notebook same time?
I have a Dell XPS 1647 with Radeon 4670.
Up until this week I was doing this with my Dell D620 using the PD01X D/Dock which has a PCI slot for a video card.
Well, it's PC refresh time at work and I received a Dell E6400. Turns out the docks for the E6400 and the D-series are different (not compatible) and there is no D/Dock for the E6400, so now I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to do 3 displays with the E6400.
I purchased StarTech's USB2DVIE external USB to DVI video card, but it's only got 16MB of RAM and whenever I scroll or move windows around in the display that is being driven by the USB2DVIE, it's a little choppy, even at 16-bit color.
There are other external USB video cards on the market, but this was one of the most expensive, and I can find no indication on any of the other cards of how much RAM they have. I'm thinking I need at least 64MB, which is what the PCI card had that I was using in the D/Dock with the D620.
My HP650 notebook has gone black screen. It is turning on properly but displays nothing .....

Comparing the config of Corei5 vs the Corei7 i noticed a slight difference in the displays.

I love the current 1920x1200 LED display on my 1737, but it has developed some dead pixels (not sure how that happens).
I do have complete coverage, and I can get the screen replaced.
I've heard that there are some manufacturers or models of screens that are preferred. Which are they?
I finally pulled the trigger and bought a SXPS 16 from the outlet. I was wondering if there was any way I could run dual displays off of it?
Would an HDMI splitter work, or are there hardware/software issues stopping that from working.
I indent to get a dell studio 1537, but the shop where I want to buy it doesn't specify which kind of display it has.
Also their tech support is to dumb to get the info from anywhere else except their own page. (they provided a link to the 1555 model to get the resolution from there... duh).

My questions are, what resolutions are in the 1537 ? I want one with 1440x900 so, is there the posibility to get a 1280x800 one ? or all the 1537 and ATI 3450 come with at least 1440x900 .....
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with an Nvidia 8600gt. I have a dell 2409 24 inch 1920 x 1080 monitor and a Samsung 22inch 1680x1050 LCD TV. I use one or the other depending what room I'm in. Both are connected using VGA cables.
These have always worked perfectly, today when I tried plugging into either one they are detected as 'generic non pnp monitor' and I get a choice of standard resolutions up to 1600 x 1200. These always used to run at their native resolutions and were detected as Samsung and Dell.
I have reinstalled the display drivers, power cycled everything, gpu seems to be running fine according to gpu-z.
I have reverted to a working backup but that made no difference. Im using windows 7 64bit.
