Dec 17, 2009"On Tuesday, Apple won a permanent injunction against Psystar following summary judgement in favor of Apple's claims of copyright infringement and violation of the DMCA. The court orders that Psystar is now prevented from the following:
1. Copying, selling, offering to sell, distributing, or creating derivative works of plaintiff's copyrighted Mac OS X software without authorization from the copyright holder;
2. Intentionally inducing, aiding, assisting, abetting, or encouraging any other person or entity to infringe plaintiff's copyrighted Mac OS X software;
3. Circumventing any technological measure that effectively controls access to plaintiff's copyrighted Mac OS X software, including, but not limited to, the technological measure used by Apple to prevent unauthorized copying of Mac OS X on non-Apple computers;
4. Manufacturing, importing, offering to the public, providing, or otherwise trafficking in any technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof that is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively controls access to plaintiff's copyrighted Mac OS X software, including, but not limited to, the technological measure used by Apple to prevent unauthorized copying of Mac OS X on non-Apple computers;
5. Manufacturing, importing, offering to the public, providing, or otherwise trafficking in any technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof that is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively protects the rights held by plaintiff under the Copyright Act with respect to its copyrighted Mac OS X software."

The only catch is this: in the fall, I'll be entering college as a mechanical engineering freshman, which basically screams "PC, PC!" However, now, with the advent of Bootcamp, Mac has become a plausible option for me.
I've really been looking at the Dell XPS M1330 and the 2.26GHz 13" MacBook Pro. My max budget is $1200, but, if I did my basic math right, I can get both of these around $800-900, which will make my parents happy.
I'm a big fan of OS X. I dig the simplistic and intuitive feel. I also enjoy the rigidity of the new-ish aluminum enclosures, especially when compared to the laptop I'm using now. However, I am familiar with XP after having used it for most of my computing experiences since junior high and onwards. 7 also looks like a very promising operating system.
I hear that Windows on a Mac machine runs pretty smoothly. However, the glitches I've read about do worry me: missing/lacking mouse drivers and lack of power management (also related to overheating ). VMWare and Parallels are also viable options, but I feel like it'd make more sense for me to run engineering applications natively on Windows.....
Dell :: Bluetooth 365/370 Modules Failing-multiple Platform,multiple Bluetooth Versions
Apr 17, 2010I have need to use Bluetooth stereo audio functionality (A2DP profile) almost exclusively when I use my laptop.
I had owned a M1330 with the Dell 355 Bluetooth Module for several years without issue. Last November, I decided to upgrade and purchased an M15x (laptop #1) with the Dell 370 Bluetooth module included,running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Not more than one day out of the box,the 370 module failed while watching a movie. It literally disappeared from device manager and no uninstalling/reinstallation of drivers alleviated the situation. The only way to get the radio to be recognized by the operating system was, and is, to shutdown,reboot into bios,disable the card in bios,reboot into windows,restart,boot into bios,enable the card and then reboot into Windows. The card would then work for awhile but eventually fail again. The module works for short periods of time but if put under an extended load,fails. That and other issues with the M15x caused me to return it.
Contacted Dell and returned the M15x and bought and built a Studio XPS 1645 (laptop #2) to replace it. Received the unit and literally within the 1st few hours,the 370 module failed exactly like the M15x.I thought o.k. a bad card and had tech support send out a new module for the XPS 1645. Received and installed it and the exact same problem happened. Failed when under an extended load. Again called tech support and was then dispatched an onsite tech to replace the entire motherboard and card. No resolution-card failed again. Spoke with a resolution specialist and returned it and again purchased a M15x (laptop #3-really liked the M15x over the XPS 1645)
Received the M15x-Bluetooth failure again. At this point, was considering dropping Dell altogether but thought I'd try the Studio 1558 (laptop #4) with the Bluetooth 365 module, in order to rule out the 370 card, first. Ordered and was delivered on the 5th of April, same exact issue-failure of card under a load. I am returning this defective Studio 1558 and again getting a M15x (laptop #5). I realize that the M15x Bluetooth card will fail again-in fact,am 100% sure it will fail,but have bought a Sony Bluetooth transmitter as a workaround.
What appears to be happening is that the card will shutdown when it gets warm.This is either a Broadcom manufacturing defect or a Dell engineering issue. I know now through personal experience that there is a serious issue with Dell Bluetooth cards.
If this was happening with only one laptop, I'd be ok with it but, this is occuring across multiple laptop platforms, with both Broadcom Bluetooth cards that Dell brands and sells.
This is either an oversight by engineering-maybe they didn't test the card under a heavy load, or Dell is knowingly selling defective equipment.
Apple :: Run Multiple Text Editors Under MacOS
Jul 17, 2009using a mac as my 'daily driver' and have noticed an ODD difference between mac and win.
In windows if you want to run 1, 2, 5 or 10+ copies of the same app... just launch it again. Apps can restrict their instance count if they want but in general you can run as many copies of something as you want.
On the mac... the 'launch' icon becomes the 'goto' icon after the app has been launched... so there doesnt seem to be a way of easily launching a second copy of the same program.
So is there a way to do this? when im doing web work on windows ive been known to have 30+ notepad windows open... dont see a way to do this on the mac. Am i missing something?

May 13, 2008The report claimed that XPS sales were eating into the market share of Dell’s subsidiary Alienware and said the new <nobr>strategy</nobr> is part of Dell’s broader turnaround effort.
Last year Dell fell behind rival HP in PC sales and obviously, touting two different lines of gaming machines wasn’t doing them any favours when it came to profit. Dell has said it will phase out the XPS and focus on what it feels is its premium line. The report also hints that we’ll soon see some new designs for Alienware based on new materials that go beyond the traditional Alienware design.
Dell acquired Alienware in March of 2006 however Alienware continues to develop and market it’s own products whilst leveraging the financing and purchasing power of Dell. Prior to the acquisition Alienware was one of the main competitors for the XPS.
The announcement comes as quite the surprise given that it wasn’t too long ago that the world was introduced to the XPS 730 H2C. The company only officially announced the machine at the beginning of the month so we’re wondering what it is that made them decide to pull the XPS line just a few weeks after the launch of the latest addition to the family, a machine Dell is describing as “one of the most <nobr>advanced gaming</nobr> platforms on the planet”.
Either way if you’re a fan of XPS you should probably get ready to say your goodbyes because starting June, it’s all Alienware.
Acer :: Moving Around RAM From Two Machines
Jun 25, 2009I have an Acer Asprie 3680 and an Aspire 5570Z 5570-2997.
The 3680 has 1 GB of RAM split in two slots
The 5570 has 2 GB of RAM split in two slots
Am I able to just swap all the RAM from the two machines without any troubles? Are the compatible and how can I do this exactly? Is there a video tutorial?
Sony :: Why Are CTO Machines Significantly Cheaper
Sep 18, 2009After buying and receiving a ready-to-ship FW490 (to match my MacBook Pro), I noticed that if I configured the exact same machine it was $181 cheaper... Sony Style won't price match the machine either, saying I have to return mine and re-order it as CTO to get the difference. I think the $181 is probably not worth the hassle but I feel a bit ripped off here... Am I being unreasonable?

If I fully charge the battery and unplug it. I'll use it for about 10 minutes without AC power. When I replug it, it shows that it'll take an hour to recharge. What the heck?
Is this normal?

Dec 27, 2009I check my battery count almost every day, what I have noticed is that the full charge capacity decreases by around 5 every day. Three days ago it was at 5182, and now it's at 5169. I run my laptop on external power most of the time. Is such steady decrease normal?

Apr 4, 2010So, doing some research it seems that the Matrox dual or triple head2go is the pricey solution to running more than 2 external monitors. Are there other solutions to running 2 or more external monitors without shutting down the laptop screen?
I was thinking hdmi to one screen then 2 usb to dvi to the two other screens, but don't know if this will shut off the screen on my laptop.
HP Envy 17 :: Keyboard Spits Multiple Keys With One Press?
Jan 17, 2014Have an issue with the keyboard on the HP Envy 17. There are three keys that, for whatever reason, stopped working.

The "o" key produces zero, left key, home, period, 'o', and 'p'.

The 'L' key produces three, period, page down, six, 'l', and semi colen.

The '.' key produces '2', '5', end, '4', period, and forward slash.
Â
This happens every time the key is pressed. If held, they produce the above, then the last key repeatedly.

All other keys perform as expected. If a seperate USB keyboard is used, it works fine.

I've tried updating and rolling back the BIOS, as well as 'resetting' by removing all power for a few minutes. Have also uninstalled the driver, then installed the latest.

I also purchased a replacement keyboard from HP (part #720244-001) and installed.

1. One has a but faster processor than the other.
2. One used shared memory for the video (Intel Driver) and the other has an nVidia Quadro video card with respective driver.

I hard wired the laptop and TV with yellow composite cable with an s-video adaptor (composite on tv and s-video on laptop).
When I try to setup for multiple displays I choose CLONE, but there is only a multiple selection option in the pulldown for LAPTOP DISPLAY AND HDTV.Can I not display image on my analog tv?

Jan 2, 2015recently purchased an HP ENVY x360 - 15-u011dx Touch Laptop. Try to set up two external monitors using an HDMI splitter. I can "extend" the desktop, but both screens are showing the same image, which isn't what I want. Can i set up two external monitors with this laptop using a splitter (this was what I was told would work when I purchased the unit along with the two monitors.) Â Previous laptops had HDMI and VGA ports allowing for two monitors. Â This laptop (as well as most newer ones) no longer have a VGA port.

Lenovo T400 / T500 :: T440 Multiple Sleep Mode
Dec 30, 2013I just bougth the T440 and I have two main problems related to sleep mode, which both seems to happend randomly.The most common problem is that when I close the lid (the action suppose to activate sleep mode), the computer seems to freeze during the time it is going to sleep : The red light is still on as when the computer is in 'normal mode', but there is no display and the keyboard seems unresponsive. I have no choice but to restart the computer.

Sometimes the computer seems to enter in sleep mode correctly (the red light slowly goes on and off, which according to the manual indicates that the computer is in sleep mode), but when I open the lid, the screen remains black and I can see nothing but the mouse. I have no choice but to restart the computer.

It also happened once that the above problem (the second one) kept occuring even after multiple restart of the computer. The only way I could solve it was by using 'windows safe mode'. As the problems occur randomly, I am unable to say if they were already there when I received the computer, or if they started to happen after the few windows updates/software installation I did.
