Dell :: New Latitude, Precision Machines Coming Out Or Refresh
Jan 10, 2010
I want to know since no one has actually been talking about it. Are there any new precision, and latitude updates coming out? Any new quadro cards for the precision m2400, like the new hp elite book with 512mb graphics.

I'm a bit out of the loop. Is the M4400 due for a major refresh any time soon? If so when, and what major components will be replaced (gpu, hopefully)?

I own a Dell Latitude E5530, which I bought used off eBay, and it was wiped to protect previous owner information, however, the owner did not reinstall Windows. I am getting the "C Prompt" as pictured below, and I would like to know how to reinstall Windows.
How to reinstall Windows with this popping up after BIOS?

general differences b/w the two Dell business models? I'm looking to buy a 15" notebook, and I think the business computers may be better than the consumer ones. However, I'm having trouble understanding the different models' differences b/w each other on Dell's website.

Based on this post[url] it would appear the Media bay only allows for 1.8" hard disks!
Is this true? Can anyone confirm this is true for both models?
2xHDD is a must for me - running VMs on a single disk is a _real_ drag!

Intel's core i3/i5/i7 Arrandale processors will be released soon (Q1 2010). They all have integrated graphics but support external graphics too. Do you think these processors will be used in Dell Latitude and/or Precision laptops?

I currently have a Latitude E6400 that I LOVE...except for the display. I bought it from the Outlet and it was such a good deal that I couldn't pass it up. But it has the WXGA (1280x800) CCFL display and I really wanted the WXGA+ LED.
I'm in the process of finding its replacement, again from Dell Outlet. I'm seriously thikning about stepping up a size to the E6500 and getting the WUXGA (1920x1200) display. The Outlet also has a surprising number of Precision M4400s in stock, too. I've also found several of those with the WUXGA display that I want.
I don't "need" the more powerful graphics card in the M4400. But I really like (make that- LOVE) the exterior design of the Precision

This has been brought up before in this forum, but it was as an off-topic discussion on a thread with a different topic. I'd like to bring it to full discussion.
Basically, I'm quite happy with my E6400 but I don't use the fingerprint reader, because that involves using the Embassy Trust Suite.
This means that you cannot use the fingerprint reader for any other uses except logging on at boot and windows logon screen. You cannot use it for your web browser, for example.
Several people have asked Dell to invest in an open API for the fingerprint reader because of this. Dell suggested we opened a thread in their community feedback site, "Dell IdeaStorm", which I did. Here's the link.

I have bought a Lenovo Ultrabay Slim II HDD Bay (for T400/T500...)!
It's Sata II and can hold a single 2,5" HDD. And the best: It fits the Modular Bay of my Latitude E6400!
I have also tested the speed and could achieve full SataII transfer speed (in my case 286 Mbytes/s). So this is also an option for using a SSD in your Laptop.
Here some pics comparing it with the standard Dell DVD Drive and pics of the Bay connected to the E6400:

I just got a new Dell Precision M4300 here in Israel (refurbished, not directly from Dell) with the following configuration:
CPU: Core 2 Extreme X9000
LCD: 15.4" WUXGA
Graphics: Quadro NVS 140M (apparently)
HDD: 160GB SATA 7200RPM
My question is as follows:
It in fact says Precision M4300 on the front of the laptop near the keyboard,
But when I turn it on it identifies itself as a Latitude D830.
I bought the laptop thinking I was getting a Quadro FX360M (it is CAD certified which is important to me as I work with their program).
What is going on? was I fooled in some way?
If I apply the latest M4300 BIOS update will it change the names of the laptop model and the graphics card?

Looking at the dell site, it's pretty clear that I can put a second hard drive in both the vostro and the precision. However, I can't see that option for the Latitude. Am I missing something? The latitude, being right between the other two, is the best fit .....

if anyone with the coolslice could report on how effective its passive design is at cooling the notebook?
In particular i would be interested in someone with a precision m4400....
Before and after temps would be helpful, how warm the bas of the cooler is when its attached, or if it feels always cool..also if it manages to keep the fan on "medium" speed most of the time....

How exactly often do they happen? I plan on getting an FW very soon, I could buy one early Feb, or wait until middle march will be the best times for me to buy one financially wise. My question is if I wait until middle March sometime, do you think there will be some upgrades on it opposed to the current FW390CTO?

I have a Dell Latitude E6400 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 160m graphics card. When I put stress on the GPU (for example playing a game), it heats up to 102ºC, which is a dangerous temperature. I have called Dell Finland and they offered to replace the motherboard, which I refused because all other users with Nvidia cards that I know of have very high temperatures when playing a game. Dell Finland has now told me to send them an email describing my problem and provide links to other people describing their own problems.
Therefore, I'd like to ask all Latitude and Precision users with Nvidia cards to post their experiences here, in particular the GPU temperatures under load. You can use HWmonitor to measure the temperatures. I am especially interested in hearing from people who have done a "copper mod", since that has been so far the only successful solution to appear here in the forums.

Latitude E6500 and Precision M4400 were basically the same machine, the differences being the M4400's (obviously) different aesthetic on the lid, the more powerful GPU options, and a handful of other tweaks that I don't really remember the specifics of.
From what I can tell, the situation looks to be about the same this time around with the 15.6" Latitude E6510 vs. the 15.6" Precision M4500.
The Precision offers beefier GPU options and a 1600x900 sRGB LED display option, but I want the lower-power WLED 1080p display anyway so that's no loss

As the Lenovo Ultrabay Slim II HDD Bay (for T400/T500...) fits into the Dell Modular Bay,
maybe we can connect an "Advanced UltraBay II Li-Polymer-Battery" into the DELL notebooks.
2700mAh of additional power? About the same Voltage as the primery battery ....

The report claimed that XPS sales were eating into the market share of Dell’s subsidiary Alienware and said the new strategy is part of Dell’s broader turnaround effort.
Last year Dell fell behind rival HP in PC sales and obviously, touting two different lines of gaming machines wasn’t doing them any favours when it came to profit. Dell has said it will phase out the XPS and focus on what it feels is its premium line. The report also hints that we’ll soon see some new designs for Alienware based on new materials that go beyond the traditional Alienware design.
Dell acquired Alienware in March of 2006 however Alienware continues to develop and market it’s own products whilst leveraging the financing and purchasing power of Dell. Prior to the acquisition Alienware was one of the main competitors for the XPS.
The announcement comes as quite the surprise given that it wasn’t too long ago that the world was introduced to the XPS 730 H2C. The company only officially announced the machine at the beginning of the month so we’re wondering what it is that made them decide to pull the XPS line just a few weeks after the launch of the latest addition to the family, a machine Dell is describing as “one of the most advanced gaming platforms on the planet”.
Either way if you’re a fan of XPS you should probably get ready to say your goodbyes because starting June, it’s all Alienware.

After buying and receiving a ready-to-ship FW490 (to match my MacBook Pro), I noticed that if I configured the exact same machine it was $181 cheaper... Sony Style won't price match the machine either, saying I have to return mine and re-order it as CTO to get the difference. I think the $181 is probably not worth the hassle but I feel a bit ripped off here... Am I being unreasonable?

question: Mac or PC?
The only catch is this: in the fall, I'll be entering college as a mechanical engineering freshman, which basically screams "PC, PC!" However, now, with the advent of Bootcamp, Mac has become a plausible option for me.
I've really been looking at the Dell XPS M1330 and the 2.26GHz 13" MacBook Pro. My max budget is $1200, but, if I did my basic math right, I can get both of these around $800-900, which will make my parents happy.
I'm a big fan of OS X. I dig the simplistic and intuitive feel. I also enjoy the rigidity of the new-ish aluminum enclosures, especially when compared to the laptop I'm using now. However, I am familiar with XP after having used it for most of my computing experiences since junior high and onwards. 7 also looks like a very promising operating system.
I hear that Windows on a Mac machine runs pretty smoothly. However, the glitches I've read about do worry me: missing/lacking mouse drivers and lack of power management (also related to overheating ). VMWare and Parallels are also viable options, but I feel like it'd make more sense for me to run engineering applications natively on Windows.....

I am trying to find out who the ODM ( original design manufacturer) is for these precision models, dell no longer sells them, perhaps there is another channel for buying one besides Dell???
If anyone has any information please let me know and also what model not just the ODM's name.
For example ALienware laptops are made by the ODM Clevo which also sells the same Chassis without the alienware bling and price under the name of Sager, Averatec also as I recall ....

I'm a somewhat pleased (after months of displeasure) SXPS1645 owner *points to sig* but after 5 months of carrying this thing with me to my campus daily (and pretty much everywhere else I go) this machine is heavy and big and bit overkill since when I'm outside I rarely use it for video editing and gaming which I tend to do at home. So for the Fall(ish) I'm going to be in the market for an ultraportable, but after using this machine it's going to be hard to go to a machine with a wimpy atom processor or even a ULV C2D. So I found the Adamo XPS and it appeals to me in the same way the SXPS did, an eye catching design that isn't bulky and still performs well. However looking at the specs currently available for it I was disappointed. It's using a hodgepodge of outdated parts. I wanted to basically start a thread on potential component refreshes for the Adamo XPS, in the hopes that by the time I'm ready to purchase one some of these things will become reality. Also I'm curious about other brands of ultraportables (NOT netbooks) that people use/have used and would recommend.
