Dell :: Can't Find SSD Drive On XPS (L421X)
Feb 18, 2013
I've just opend my new XPS-L421X today. And I dont think there is a SSD Drive on it (there should be 32 gb ish). I can hear the harddrive running all the time. And it dosen't start up really quick/smooth.I can't find any SSD drive In device manager, it dosent show up under the Disk Drives category. Another thing. The harddrive should be 500 gb. I know you never get the hole 500 gb, but mine has only 415 gb out of the box (whit installed Windows). Is that normal?

My laptop is plugged in and not charging. I have run a bios and it says that the battery is a non dell battery (even though i have not tampered with the computer at all). I have only had the computer for 5 months. If the battery failed after 2 years yeah that might be acceptable but only 5 months?!?!?! I now cannot use it without plugging it in.

I got the l421x 8gig ram laptop and had to install win 7 32bit on it because of work related software. What annoys me is that according to windows I only have 2.4gig ram total. The resource monitor tells me that a whopping 5.7 gig is hardware reserved memory.
Now when I boot I have about 800mb available memory and maybe 100 free.how I reduce reserved memory that the intel graphics use? Other laptops have bios settings for this(e.g my private asus ux32vd) but not this xps. I am fully aware that 8gigs will not be available on a 32bit os - that is not the issue. I'd assume this laptop should have about 3-3.5gig ram total after a fresh boot. But why only 2.4gig ?

I recently received my new XPS 14 (L421x) ultrabook. Â Out of the box, this machine has a 500Gb C: drive labeled "OS" and a second 110Gb SSD D: drive labeled "Data". Â Windows 8 is installed on the C: drive. Â There is absolutely nothing on the D: drive.
Does this sound right? Â I would have thought that you would want to have the OS on the SSD and boot from that (much faster?) drive.

This is the second time I have had this issue. I have already had the motherboard and power supply/cable replaced and it worked for awhile. Here is the issue.
- Occasionally after powering down, the next time I try to power up, the laptop does nothing but show the power light on. No Dell screen, no back lights on the keyboard, nothing else. I press and hold the power button down and after 5 seconds it shuts the light off. Â I would then try it again with the same result. I let the battery completely drain; plug the power cord back in and after about 5 minutes of charging, try it again. This seemed to work until one day it did not. Then I had the motherboard and power supply replaced and all seemed well. Â Now, 6-8 weeks later I have the same problem again. Â A new L421X purchased in December 2012 with 512GB SSD running Windows 8 64 bit. I use this for business and am about to throw it out the window. Â
Currently, I have tried the power up, drain power trick with no results. It is dead with all my business info on the drive. Â I am about to dump Dell and switch to HP. Â
Anything I can do short of a whole new machine?

My laptop suddenly hanged. When I pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del, the menu did not come on. When I repeated, it did not shut down. I manually shut down the laptop. When I restarted, it said cannot find hard disk drive and no bootable devices.
Someone checked it out and they say the drive has crashed. Is it possible the links are loose? Is it possible to recover data from drive?

I installed Ashampoo Burning Studio 9 yesterday to burn some DVD's/CD's for archiving purposes on my HP6850s using Windows 7 Ultimate, and while I can burn CD's/DVD's on my Toshiba laptop, I can't burn them on this one as for some reason, Windows 7 Ultimate couldn't find the DVD drive when it was installed and I don't know what the exact details for it are so I can download drivers for it.
Is there any way I can get Windows 7 Ultimate to recognise the drive so I can burn my discs?
I remember that the disc drive used to be available but at one stage, I attached a external drive to it which I removed properly and I don't know if that might have something to do with it...

I am currently using an acrer aspire 2930z. It comes with two HDD, both of which have 111GB each. I am only using 1 HDD at the moment which is only around 52percent full. I want to move all my movies, music and games to my other empty one, (we'll call drive D)but when I do this my drive D only opens up as a folder. Itries to mark this HDD as active, but get a maessage telling me that if drive D has no OS installed on it, it could stop my comp from working. What I would like to know is...... Does this drive come with vista already installed?
this is only to save me buying an external drive, (which is probably the better option), but with this extra space on my laptop it would be handy to use.

After updating the touchpad drivers to 16.3.7.0 A03, there has been an issue with two-finger scrolling.
When I lift my fingers off the touchpad, it jumps to the bottom of the page. This is very frustrating as I have to scroll back up to find my place. This happens with Chrome, Word, IE, Firefox, everything.
The same issue is also plaguing this user: [URL] .....

I'm installing Windows 7 x64 on my HP Envy 14 2090.
Â
Setup cannot find my harddrive, presumably because a SATA driver is missing. I have tried the supplied SATA driver from HP driver download page for my model, but they don't work. I've tried various others, still no luck.
Â
The harddrive is found by BIOS. The harddrive has been working without a hitch for years, right up until I tried a re-install.
Â
PS: I'm not using the HP recovery DVDs, since these install all sorts of unneccessary software I don't want. (Why do all major laptop producers add this crap?)
Â
Where can I find the correct SATA drivers for use with Windows 7 x64 installation?

So as soon as I got my brand new Y50-70, and before doing anything on this laptop (not even installing new software), I went tried OneKey Recovery only to discover that it is broken.
Â
I then tried my luck with Windows Recovery (the one provided with every Windows 8.1 copy, not unique to Lenovo):
Â
I first went through system image creation on a recovery drive (1TB WD Elements USB HDD):
Â
1. Find it on Control Panel:
2: Select it (Recovery option):
3. Create a recovery drive:
4. Selected the F: drive (1TB, it's not a *flash* drive just an ordinary USB hdd, does it matter?):
5. Got a nice warning (indeed, this process reformatted the drive, to 32GB only, why 32GB and not the full 1TB?)
Â
Now... let's see if I can restore from this newly created system image:
Â
1. Rebooted from the newly created Recovery Drive (it actually boots!):
2. Selected "Use a device", then received this menu:
3. I selected EFI USB Device. It then went to an intermediate Lenovo boot splash:
4. And shortly after that (without me doing anything) a new prompt, to choose a language:
5. I selected English and then, got prompted for keyboard layout:
6. The system then system to restart again from the Recovery Drive, only to prompt me again with the "Choose an Option" screen (as in step #1). So, I selected "Troubleshoot" this time:
7. I then selected "Advanced options", and received this screen:
8. I then selected System Image Recoery and received this screen:
9. I selected the only option available (Windows 8.1), then got this "Cannot find system image":
10. Why??? I clicked cancel and I was prompted to select an image:
11. So I clicked Next, but got nothing to select:
12. Clicking the Advanced button only provides irrelevant options:

Something recently happened to my laptop, and now whenever I boot up my laptop, I get a message stating that "No drive detected", and I don't know if the hard drive might be damaged or not.
I tried connecting the hard drive directly to a desktop pc since it's a sata hard drive, but my desktop pc just froze on the boot screen whenever this hard drive was connected.
I also was going to try and use a hard drive external case to maybe connect it to the pc this way, but I wasn't sure if it would work

Two and a half year old Inspiron 5110 with Win 7 Home Premium. Â Cloned the internal drive using Easeus. Â Set the BIOS to USB in number one position, but this laptop won't boot from the external drive. Â Is this laptop bootable via a USB platter drive or a thumb drive? Also, can the recovery partition be used to repair Win 7 Â or is the recovery partition only to format the drive and install software the way it was when new ?

My system (Inspiron 1564 - Windows 7) is still configured as I received it from Dell. The C drive is 58.5 Gb and the D drive is 164 Gb.
The problem is that everything saves to the C drive and nothing uses the D drive.
I do not want to reformat in one drive, happy to keep 2 but want pictures, documents etc to be saved to the D drive as the C drive is getting full up. How do I make the change to point these files to the D drive?

On an old Inspiron 8000 laptop, I have a CD-ROM drive that only fits in the floppy drive slot. Will the BIOS recognize a boot CD in this new location? I believe it's an 18000 motherboard.

I'm thinking of removing my DVD drive and replacing it with a caddy and hard drive as explained here.
I don't use the DVD drive very often and would much prefer a 500GB or 1TB hard drive in there. The DVD drive can then be used externally via the eSATA port using this cable.
The ideal solution would be to use this NewmodeUS caddy as it supports the larger 12.7mm 1TB 2.5" hard drives and has a removable faceplate. The problem is the price.
At $55 including postage to the UK plus customs, VAT and clearance fees on top it's going to work out pretty expensive for what is essentially a slimline SATA to SATA extension

I really like the Dell Studio 17 I have, but it is defective in the sense of the screen scratched and the drive scratches discs. If I call Dell, like last time, they will send me a replacement Studio 17, but it will be refurbished or not new. I don't like that.
What websites feature the BEST Dell coupons to bring the Dell Studio 17 price down? I got mine fully featured for about $1,340 on Dell's 30% off sale. I miss that sale because Dell doesn't do coupons for the Studio line of laptops, only Inspiron and XPS. They have offers, but when I spec out each offer, it comes to about the same amount which is higher.
I DO NOT want to deal with Dell on the phone, that's for sure. Last time I did that, they were very confused putting my Dell order together and price and spec'ed it wrong.
I also want top specs but for the 30% or more off price liek before because an outdated chipset in the Studio 15/17 is NOT worth over $1,600+.

I hate for this to be my first post, but after looking everywhere on the internet and on this site (I've been lurking a while) I'm still at the same place I started with my Studio 15 laptop. I'll try to include as much detail as possible.
I had my laptop plugged into my LCD tv via an HDMI cable as I often do, and when I went to close the laptop to use just the LCD, the tv flashed, showed a blue screen of death for a quick second and then went black. I opened the laptop and it was still on, but the screen wouldn't go on.
I restarted my computer and from there on out it kept making a beeping noise and stalling for a really long time at the "Dell Studio/progress bar" screen. After leaving it at that screen for a while the clicking stop and then it allowed me to access the Boot Options and Setup. Under setup, when I click on the drive under SATA hard drive, it shows something like 10GB and nothing more, and I have no options on the screen .....

My M1730 can’t boot to Vista. It says in red “FAILED”. Also says It can’t find any bootable devices. I did do the test (The one where you press F8 I think) more than once.
I just got my Windows Vista Home Premium OEM disc from Newegg today, I left my original dell one in storage back in NY. It can boot from the disc, but it can’t repair my laptop. So is the HDD dead or what? =/

I've just bought a XPS M1530 Laptop (so excited!). But I have some problem connecting to wireless networks.
My roommates can find and connect to our wireless network, while my machine cannot even find one!! It can't even create wireless networks (ad hoc)
I looked up Dell support, it said to uninstall network driver and restart windows (vista HP, SP1). I did that, after reboot, it could find the available network, but after another reboot, it again didn't work.
I'm pretty sure that nothing is wrong with hardware (since it could find once or twice). But I don know what to do.
System configuration:
Core 2 dua 2.5GHz
Ram: 4GB
Graphic :Geforce 8600gt 256mb
Hard: 320GB
Wireless: Dell Wireless
OS: Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1
