Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Y50-70 Backup Created And Recovery Drive Boots But Can't Find System Image

Dec 19, 2014

So as soon as I got my brand new Y50-70, and before doing anything on this laptop (not even installing new software), I went tried OneKey Recovery only to discover that it is broken.

I then tried my luck with Windows Recovery (the one provided with every Windows 8.1 copy, not unique to Lenovo):

I first went through system image creation on a recovery drive (1TB WD Elements USB HDD):

1. Find it on Control Panel:
2: Select it (Recovery option):
3. Create a recovery drive:
4.  Selected the F: drive (1TB, it's not a *flash* drive just an ordinary USB hdd, does it matter?):
5. Got a nice warning (indeed, this process reformatted the drive, to 32GB only, why 32GB and not the full 1TB?)

Now... let's see if I can restore from this newly created system image:

1. Rebooted from the newly created Recovery Drive (it actually boots!):
2. Selected "Use a device", then received this menu:
3. I selected EFI USB Device. It then went to an intermediate Lenovo boot splash:
4. And shortly after that (without me doing anything) a new prompt, to choose a language:
5. I selected English and then, got prompted for keyboard layout:
6. The system then system to restart again from the Recovery Drive, only to prompt me again with the "Choose an Option" screen (as in step #1). So, I selected "Troubleshoot" this time:
7. I then selected "Advanced options", and received this screen:
8. I then selected System Image Recoery and received this screen:
9. I selected the only option available (Windows 8.1), then got this "Cannot find system image":
10. Why??? I clicked cancel and I was prompted to select an image:
11. So I clicked Next, but got nothing to select:
12. Clicking the Advanced button only provides irrelevant options:

HP Pavilion M7-1015dx Recovery :: System Backup Image Vs System Recovery Discs?

Sep 12, 2012

I just purchased a new Pavilion m7-1015dx Laptop and need to make the System Recovery Discs ... (which I realize restores the Laptop to factory default).. btw, I've already created the System Repair Disc.

However, I read an article about creating a System Backup Image that allows you to Recovery EVERYTHING if lost, all your installed programs, etc.

First Question ::: if I do the System Backup IMAGE ... Do I still need to create the System Recovery disc's (mfg's default) also??

The Second Question ::: If I create the System Recovery discs do I still need that Recovery Partition ??

I am really really wanting to partition my C: drive ... it's huge plus I hate seeing storage folders intermingled with system folders .. Currently using a Symbol/Character to separate them.

As of now, I can't partition the C:drive as all partitions are used.. max is 4 and I've got 4 .... C:drive,   System Partition,   HPTools Partition, and   Recovery Partition.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Y50-70 - Windows Cannot Find System Image On This Computer

Dec 14, 2014

While attempting a recovery with a copy of the recovery partition as provided by Lenovo, I receive: "Windows cannot find a system image on this computer".

I have both the Lenovo recovery partition on the HDD that came inside the laptop (15.56GB, PBR_DRV) and a copy of it on an external USB HDD (booted from it!). Why can't the recovery software find it?

Where is that "System Image"?

Lenovo V570 C/E/K/M/N/V Series :: Always Boots With System Preparation Tool 3.1.4

Jun 30, 2013

I purchased a refurbished V570 for my son.  Just received it the other day.  Every time it boots up, the System Preparation Tool 3.1.4 boots up.  Whenever I turn the laptop off and start it again, instead of showing the regular Windows 7 start up screen, it has a "Setting up your computer for the first time" (or something like that) screen.  Once up and running, the tool pops up again.  Windows 7 runs perfectly, no issues, I installed a bunch of things for him, but obviously this tool shouldn't be starting up and the laptop shouldn't be starting with the setup screen every time.

I did some digging around the internet, there is a bunch of info on this, but everything indicates that the Windows installation was not properly finished on my laptop.  I went to all the places that are listed to possibly remove the tool, but can't find any references except a bunch in the registry which I don't really want to mess with on a "new" computer.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Backup Files From Hard Drive

Feb 7, 2014

My sons laptop has died and needs returned for warranty work - likely a problem with the mother board.  It was suggested that we backup files on the hard drive before sending.  I pulled the hard drive and attached it to another computer via Serial ATA to USB cable.  A portion of the hard drive can be accessed through Windows Explorer which shows 25GB of the 750GB hard drive and only shows an applications and a drivers folder.  Word documents, data and pictures cannot be found.

I tried to take ownership of the hard drive thinking that this might make the data visible but it did not. I expect there is about 150GB of file storage (excluding programs) that we would like to back-up.  Am concerned that the hard drive may have been damaged but the data that is accessible seems to be whole and intact.

Apple :: Time Machine - Is It An Image Backup Or Just Data Backup

Jan 2, 2009

Back in my Windows days and for my servers at work (just a few), I always did the following to do backup:

1) DATA
Use SyncToy or copy the data folders (My Documents, etc.) to an external hard drive

2) OS and APPLICATIONS
Create an image using Acronis's TrueImage, so I don't have to re-install the applications or re-configure the OS

With Time Machine, I know it backups my User folder (Documents, Music, etc.), but does it also backup the computer settings, such that in the case of re-install, I just pop-in the original OSX Installation CD and restore from Time Machine without reconfiguring the OS AND re-installing the application again?

I noticed in the Time Machine hard drive there is also an Applications folder that contains the list of the same applications as installed in my MBP.

Dell Inspiron E6330 :: Program To Generate Backup Image Of A Series Of INP Files?

Mar 5, 2013

We had one of our new Inspiron E6330 laptops have issues with the VGA port the other day, and in the course of the Dell technician making things worse, he messed up the hard drive.  In the end, he left us with a new hard drive, a directory full of files from some unknown backup program, and the old hard drive - which he unfortunately wiped & reinstalled Windows on.  He wasn't too clever.  It seems that the backup program he ran left us with a directory full of files which I can't identify.  I wasn't actually in the office when the Dell tech was on-site, so I'm left trying to piece this back together for my user.

The directory listing:

03/05/2013 07:04 PM <DIR>
.03/05/2013 07:04 PM <DIR>
..10/12/2012 09:39 AM
153,486 APPS.INP10/12/2012 09:39 AM

[Code] ....

The XML files are interesting - include.xml is a listing of all the user's files from the disk, and migr.xml contains a description of the old system.

Acer :: Backup/Factory Recovery Make Your Own Factory Image?

Jan 12, 2009

I have been given an Acer 6930G by a family member to setup. After realising there's 0 discs included with the laptop, the Acer pop up message tells me I have to make my own factory default image. I have successfully made it on 2 DVDs, my question is now in the manual there is nothing about how to use it, I was wondering if anyone can share any insight to me as to how it works.

Basically I know it is probably a bootable DVD as the root of the DVD suggests (several "BOOT" files) I was wondering how it actually looks like? I haven't tested it yet as the user was extremely desperate to get it running so I had to give it up the moment the DVDs were made.

If I put the DVD in and select to boot from it at start up (before getting into windows) does it take me to some sort of custom screen where I can SELECT that I want to reformat and restore the laptop? I want to know what options I am given and I can only assume that it's the same for most laptops.

And I can only assume again, that if I factory restore it, it will come back with Vista activated and all the initial bloatware again, along with all the drivers for it (so I don't need to go track them down).

This is all I need to know, I wish I can test it but I can't even get the laptop back now (until it breaks ...)

If someone can post their experiences with it I will be grateful, this is just more for reassurance than anything, and confirm my assumptions? Many thanks in advance!

EDIT: I have discovered that I can launch that recovery app by pushing ALT+F10, I have managed to wrangle the laptop temporarily to test and have discovered that I can choose from 2 back up options, but I dare not go any further, can someone tell me the next steps? One says factory default, and the other is user's backup.

I can guess that if I choose the first option, factory default, it'll ask for the DVDs I have created? And the 2nd option will restore a backup I made selecting the user option on the recovery app.

HP Pavilion Dv7-6b50ei Recovery :: Trying To Factory Reset But Recovery Partition / Discs Created Faulty

Jul 8, 2013

I have a pavilion dv7-6b50ei notebook pc bought 2012. It always gives a command prompt pop up which doesn't stay long enough to read. I also felt there's a virus on it which my anti-virus couldn't solve so I tried factory resetting but when I restart and press F11 it gives an error(something like a boot.. is missing). so I tried my recovery discs. Disc 1 of 4 ran fine but disc 2 keeps stopping with an error.

Now the laptop doesn't load as I think the OS has been formatted during the recovery and don't know what to do. I feel disc 2 is bad too because it also gave an error while trying to copy it to a USB pen drive. I have also tried an external dvd and run the hp test on the hard drive; the hard drive passed the test. If I can get a new set of recovery discs, it would solve my problem.

Lenovo B / G Series :: G550 Partition Management In Presence Of OneKey Recovery System

Jul 27, 2012

I am currently using a G550 2958 Model Laptop, from the Lenvo 3000/Essentials Notebook Series.  This laptop came with a feature called OneKey Recovery, which I have used to create recovery disks for my computer, using 2 DVDs.  My problem is this: I wish to install a Linux operating system on my computer, but Lenovo filled the partition table.  Here is a summary of the partition configuration:

First Partition, Unnamed, Primary, NTFS, 200-300 MB, boot flag, houses Master Boot Record

Second Partition, "C", "C:", and/or "OS Drive" (running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1), Primary, NTFS, approximately 187 GB, contains Windows installation and personal files.

Third Partition, Unnamed, Extended, NTFS, approx. 30 GB, is a container for:

Logical Partition: "Lenovo", Logical, NTFS, approx. 30 GB, lba flag (which I take to mean it's bootable), contatins data and drivers necesarry for operating the OneKey Recovery System in respect to creating images and usage of the NOVO button.

Fourth and final Partition, "LENOVO_PART", Primary, NTFS, 13-17 GB, hidden service partition used for OneKey Recovery.

My question is this: I'm aware of the fact the OneKey Recovery will cease to function if I resize or delete any partitions in that I will not be able to create backup images or recovery disks, but since I have already done so and have no further need of OneKey, will booting the recovery disks automatically restore OneKey functionality after deletion or resizing of recovery partitions?  In essence, will disabling the OneKey system through partition management permanently remove my ability to use recovery disks, or no?

Also, once I do that, how do I disable express cache and ideally disable using the built-in 24GB SSD? I am not interested in IRST as I tend to use hibernation a lot.

Dell Inspiron 15z :: Ultrabook Lost External Drive Backup Files To Recovery Creation?

Apr 3, 2013

Inspiron 15z Ultrabook, Windows 8, DELL System Recovery.

I have an external Seagate Expansion Drive 2TB and had backup files on it. I created a new partition by shrinking the E: volume and made F: to use for the DELL System Recovery.

I selected the F: partition when asked what drive to use. I was 100% certain E: would never chosen during any steps in the process. After it finished I looked in Computer and found both partitions had been formatted and a DBR_Boot placed in both. Yet E: (where personal files were stored) is basically empty other than what appears to be a boot up capability and F: has the recovery files.

Why has this happened? I need those files. Is there a way to reverse the process or will file recovery software be needed in an attempt to regain those files?

I can't believe this hasn't happened to other people, must be a common occurrence. What I could do to recover lost files.

Lenovo V570 C/E/K/M/N/V Series :: Cloned HD To SSD / Boots Fine But No BIOS

Jul 9, 2011

V570 - works great! Upgraded to Win8 but had probs with it so did a "refresh" and that pretty much cleared it up.Bored so got a Sammy 840Pro SSD.  Cloned with stand-alone Acronis Trueimage 2013.  Boots and works fine. Had the SSD plugged to the eSATA.Then I noticed that on cold startup, it was not giving me the BIOS options of F2 and F12, and pressing them did nothing - it just booted up Win. Did a lot of googling at this point but no joy.I then noticed that on a restart from Win8 , it DID give me the BIOS options and I could get into the BIOS.  But that's a dicey way to run!!! I early on (a year ago) found that you cannot re-order the devices in BIOS - it resets them to what it wants. (latest BIOS 44CN36WW which is 43 - an old one)

Okay, so boot order is SATA port specific, I put my second HD into the primary position and hung the SSD off the eSATA cable.  It insisted that the SSD was bootable device 8 (LOL) and tried very hard to boot from the Realtek LAN port.  However it WAS giving me the BIOS options so I could hit F12 and choose the SSD and boot into windows. I also found that if I pulled the RJ45 before I hit power, it would try the Realtek, but then bounce to the list of devices - choose the SSD, and boot into windows.I moved the SSD to the DVD port (I had an adapter), but exact same thing - still calls it 8.So it works and is a good deal faster than the original Toshiba drive which did 90MB read.  But there is that unfortunate pause in my 10-15 sec win boot!
