Apple :: Time Machine - Is It An Image Backup Or Just Data Backup

Jan 2, 2009

Back in my Windows days and for my servers at work (just a few), I always did the following to do backup:

1) DATA
Use SyncToy or copy the data folders (My Documents, etc.) to an external hard drive

2) OS and APPLICATIONS
Create an image using Acronis's TrueImage, so I don't have to re-install the applications or re-configure the OS

With Time Machine, I know it backups my User folder (Documents, Music, etc.), but does it also backup the computer settings, such that in the case of re-install, I just pop-in the original OSX Installation CD and restore from Time Machine without reconfiguring the OS AND re-installing the application again?

I noticed in the Time Machine hard drive there is also an Applications folder that contains the list of the same applications as installed in my MBP.

Just started TM backups on a new 1TB drive today....

It did 30GB in 2 & half hours! A little slow...

Why does it go soooo slow? Supposed to be faster in SL.... don't think so....

Went for Carbon Copy Cloner..... much better.... currently 27GB in 23 mins.... thats more like it.

That'll be my weekend moan out of the way I guess...

Apple :: Time Machine Backup Taking Too Much Space

Here is the thing, I only have used 285gb of 500gb on my internal hard drive. I got myself a new 500Gb external hd as a time machine.

However, when I go to the time machine' options it says: Total included: 503.1gb

How can a backup be bigger than my internal hd?

Apple :: Time Capsules Should Never Be Used As A Backup Device

Well after time capsule number 22 of 31 died today, I thought I may rant slightly about these so called server grade backups they " Just Work " for a few months to 2 years then seem to LOVE to pack it in taking entire backups and even causing me to transplant drive platters to recover business data.... small piece of advice go find a decent seagate or WD drive and use that, and sure looks like im not alone either as I will soon be entering 22 serial numbers in the dead Time capsule directory [url] next time apple wants a server grade backup try something with redundant power supplies and a SERVER grade drive, not some drive outta the discount bin

Acer :: ERecovery Custom Backup Vs Factory Default Backup

Jul 6, 2009

differences are between the two.

Does the factory default., only back up the files that were originally on the drive when I first bought it, regardless of what I install afterwards? and the Custom backsup everything? I noticed that Factory Default is 10GB, but the Custom is 29GB. This is confusing because I only install two small programs on top the Factory Default. WHat is the other 19GB?

I have a Aspire 6930G that came with 3 partitions.

After I make my backup image, so I still need the recovery partitions?

Dell Inspiron 14 :: Creating Factory Backup Will Delete All Other Data From Drive?

Feb 2, 2015

I'd like to create a factory backup disk to the Dell laptop that I recently aquired (Inspiron 14). I want to save this factory backup on an external WD flash drive (that has 500GB). This disk contains, already 100GB of other personal data.

My question is: will the process of creating factory disk delete all other data on that drive (I don't want that to happend of course) or it will create the Image disk in addition to the other data the in this disk?? Dell's wizard said that the factory data requires only 9.2GB so there's plenty of space for all the data together.

Dell Inspiron 17R :: Cannot Perform Factory Image Backup

Dec 29, 2012

I have a Dell Inspiron 17R Special Edition Laptop with Windows 8, bought on 12/16/2012. The Dell Backup and Recovery version 1.0.0.2 does not seem to work properly when using the "Recovery Media" option (“Create a copy of your factory image in case of critical hardware failure.”) for doing a "Factory Backup" with Discs.I am using new Maxell DVD+R discs.

After the first disc is written and validated it is ejected. A new blank disc is requested, placed in the drive, and then OK is clicked, and the new disc is in for a short while and then ejected without anything being written to it. Also, the DVD is still listed in the File Explorer as "DVD RW Drive (D:) Recovery" even though no DVD is in the drive and the drive tray is in (normally, when there is no DVD in the drive the DVD drive is no longer shown in the File Explorer).

If the backup is canceled and a blank disc is placed back in, then checking the properties of the disc shows 0 GB available and 0 GB Used - this error is corrected by Restarting the computer. After the Restart the disc is properly shown to have 3.9GB Available and 0GB Used.I tried again to do the backup and the same thing happened, with only the first disc actually being written and validated. That first disc is named “Recovery” and it does contain folders: Boot, EFI, preload, and Recovery. It has files: AUTORUN.INF, BOO.MGR, BOOTMGR, BOOTMGR.EFI, MASTERLOG, and Media.ico. Used space is 3.81 GB.

Since the Dell backup program for the factory image does not seem to recognize that a new blank disc is inserted after it was done with the first disc, I cannot make a backup of the factory image.

Dell Inspiron E6330 :: Program To Generate Backup Image Of A Series Of INP Files?

Mar 5, 2013

We had one of our new Inspiron E6330 laptops have issues with the VGA port the other day, and in the course of the Dell technician making things worse, he messed up the hard drive.  In the end, he left us with a new hard drive, a directory full of files from some unknown backup program, and the old hard drive - which he unfortunately wiped & reinstalled Windows on.  He wasn't too clever.  It seems that the backup program he ran left us with a directory full of files which I can't identify.  I wasn't actually in the office when the Dell tech was on-site, so I'm left trying to piece this back together for my user.

The directory listing:

03/05/2013 07:04 PM <DIR>
.03/05/2013 07:04 PM <DIR>
..10/12/2012 09:39 AM
153,486 APPS.INP10/12/2012 09:39 AM

[Code] ....

The XML files are interesting - include.xml is a listing of all the user's files from the disk, and migr.xml contains a description of the old system.

Lenovo P/Y/Z Series :: Y50-70 Backup Created And Recovery Drive Boots But Can't Find System Image

Dec 19, 2014

So as soon as I got my brand new Y50-70, and before doing anything on this laptop (not even installing new software), I went tried OneKey Recovery only to discover that it is broken.

I then tried my luck with Windows Recovery (the one provided with every Windows 8.1 copy, not unique to Lenovo):

I first went through system image creation on a recovery drive (1TB WD Elements USB HDD):

1. Find it on Control Panel:
2: Select it (Recovery option):
3. Create a recovery drive:
4.  Selected the F: drive (1TB, it's not a *flash* drive just an ordinary USB hdd, does it matter?):
5. Got a nice warning (indeed, this process reformatted the drive, to 32GB only, why 32GB and not the full 1TB?)

Now... let's see if I can restore from this newly created system image:

1. Rebooted from the newly created Recovery Drive (it actually boots!):
2. Selected "Use a device", then received this menu:
3. I selected EFI USB Device. It then went to an intermediate Lenovo boot splash:
4. And shortly after that (without me doing anything) a new prompt, to choose a language:
5. I selected English and then, got prompted for keyboard layout:
6. The system then system to restart again from the Recovery Drive, only to prompt me again with the "Choose an Option" screen (as in step #1). So, I selected "Troubleshoot" this time:
7. I then selected "Advanced options", and received this screen:
8. I then selected System Image Recoery and received this screen:
9. I selected the only option available (Windows 8.1), then got this "Cannot find system image":
10. Why??? I clicked cancel and I was prompted to select an image:
11. So I clicked Next, but got nothing to select:
12. Clicking the Advanced button only provides irrelevant options:

Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 :: Fails To Start After Local Backup Restoration To Factory Image

I have a laptop in our lab that was full of a bunch of software that had been installed over the last year or so and I was trying to bring it back to how it was shipped from the factory.  After booting with the F8 option then through Advanced Options I selected to restore the laptop to the factory image since there was no data that I needed from the unit.  After the laptop restoration was finished I now boot to the BSOD and it perpetually asks for a startup repair which does not work.  I made this unit a door stopper needless to say since there are no disks included in the purchase. Is there any way to get this laptop back to factory?

Acer :: Backup/Factory Recovery Make Your Own Factory Image?

Jan 12, 2009

I have been given an Acer 6930G by a family member to setup. After realising there's 0 discs included with the laptop, the Acer pop up message tells me I have to make my own factory default image. I have successfully made it on 2 DVDs, my question is now in the manual there is nothing about how to use it, I was wondering if anyone can share any insight to me as to how it works.

Basically I know it is probably a bootable DVD as the root of the DVD suggests (several "BOOT" files) I was wondering how it actually looks like? I haven't tested it yet as the user was extremely desperate to get it running so I had to give it up the moment the DVDs were made.

If I put the DVD in and select to boot from it at start up (before getting into windows) does it take me to some sort of custom screen where I can SELECT that I want to reformat and restore the laptop? I want to know what options I am given and I can only assume that it's the same for most laptops.

And I can only assume again, that if I factory restore it, it will come back with Vista activated and all the initial bloatware again, along with all the drivers for it (so I don't need to go track them down).

This is all I need to know, I wish I can test it but I can't even get the laptop back now (until it breaks ...)

If someone can post their experiences with it I will be grateful, this is just more for reassurance than anything, and confirm my assumptions? Many thanks in advance!

EDIT: I have discovered that I can launch that recovery app by pushing ALT+F10, I have managed to wrangle the laptop temporarily to test and have discovered that I can choose from 2 back up options, but I dare not go any further, can someone tell me the next steps? One says factory default, and the other is user's backup.

I can guess that if I choose the first option, factory default, it'll ask for the DVDs I have created? And the 2nd option will restore a backup I made selecting the user option on the recovery app.

Apple :: Mac DVD Backup

Oct 30, 2009

The Mac DVD Back-Up Guide

This is a guide on backing up DVDs on a Mac. I myself own the old iMac 21 inch running OS X.

One day I was like hmm, what if I lose some DVDs, how would I ever watch them again? I was like wait, I could always back them up. But then I realized, I was using a Mac and wondered if it was possible, as I had never backed up any DVDs before and I thought all the software was mostly all for Windows (I was a Mac noob, forgive me).

Well it turns out there are some fine programs that make it easier.

Some info you should know before I start:

-Try at your own risk! I know there isnt really that much of a risk, and I highly doubt any of this will somehow destroy your computer, but there always is that far-off slim chance.

-This was all done on the old generation iMac all in one, Intel (this is important), 1 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2400, 250GB HD, Apple OS X. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WILL WORK ON SNOW LEOPARD. However, I think it should, since there really arent that much differences between the two operating systems. HOWEVER, since the required downloads were released and designed for OS X, I wouldn't give it a shot, but it's your choice.......

Apple :: Backup Of Bootcamp

Dec 21, 2009

I've tried disk utility to create an image of it; it won't boot after this and once the bootcamp wizard has been run, still doesn't recognise that an os is on the partition.

Also tried Winclone; of which has to have exactly the same partition size as previous otherwise it doesn't work properly.

Can anyone suggest something like symantec ghost or osx equiv? Same for backing up osx partition; want something that I can just restore if needed. Used CCC but for some reason cannot get it to not keep all my previous files, so when restoring it also restores all deleted files too.

Apple :: Backup Medium For My Server

Mar 10, 2010

We have a server and 10 iMac workstations.

My concern is twofold
1. because these tapes are proprietary, if the drive goes down, the tape can't be read by any other machine. I had this happen a couple of years ago when the tape drive broke and because it was discontinued, I have all 5 daily tapes that could no longer be read and cost almost $100 each. Luckily I have never had to restore from a tape, but if I did, I would have been out of luck.

2. The cost. These drives are expensive. Would it not make more sense to have a couple of 16gig USB flash drives to rotate through. They are more portable and I can do a restore on any networked machine.

Or we can simply do a backup to a networked drive. I like the flash drive better than the last option because it can be moved to a safe part of the office to protect against a water pipe burst or something like that. the total data requiring backup is just under 1 gig

Apple :: Time Machine From Old To New MBP

Feb 14, 2009

I have a lot of personal data and applications that are backed up right now in the form of a Time Machine backup.

The old MBP is a SR (sig below) and the new one will be the unibody; different specs, GPU, HD etc...

Can I just plug in my external HD that has my Time Machine backup into the new machine and restore it? Would the fact that there are different hardware complicate matters? And if so, since I still have my old machine for now, what would be the best solution to do what I'm trying to do here?

Apple :: Disk Backup - Cloning - MAC Environment

Feb 4, 2009

I will probably re-switch on MAC Laptop soon ( last time I owned a G3) and was wondering if things have changed since then....:

What I do with my windows machine :

I use Acronis True Image to build an image of the OS partition along with software ( except data stored in a different partition) and save it in two different places, one of them an external USB drive.

In case of virus/driver problem/damaged OS but still bootable, I recover from the image right trough the Acronis software installed on windows.
If the OS is not bootable, I can use the Bootable Rescue CD that I can build with the same software, boot the PC with it and voila'...

I remember in G3 days I used Carbon Copy Cloner to save -not "images"- but snapshot of the OS partition to external drive and eventually recover the main OS partition booting from it, just in case. Can it still be done in Intel/Leopard days?

I also remember that the external boot could be performed only from a firewire drive, is it still this way, or can I use a normal USB drive ( HPS+ formatted)?

And, last question : is the 800 Fw physical port compatible with a 400? ( can I plug my M-Audio Firewire audio device straight to a MBP with a normal FW cable?)

HP Pavilion M7-1015dx Recovery :: System Backup Image Vs System Recovery Discs?

Sep 12, 2012

I just purchased a new Pavilion m7-1015dx Laptop and need to make the System Recovery Discs ... (which I realize restores the Laptop to factory default).. btw, I've already created the System Repair Disc.

However, I read an article about creating a System Backup Image that allows you to Recovery EVERYTHING if lost, all your installed programs, etc.

First Question ::: if I do the System Backup IMAGE ... Do I still need to create the System Recovery disc's (mfg's default) also??

The Second Question ::: If I create the System Recovery discs do I still need that Recovery Partition ??

I am really really wanting to partition my C: drive ... it's huge plus I hate seeing storage folders intermingled with system folders .. Currently using a Symbol/Character to separate them.

As of now, I can't partition the C:drive as all partitions are used.. max is 4 and I've got 4 .... C:drive,   System Partition,   HPTools Partition, and   Recovery Partition.
