Dell :: DVD Drive Is Not Reading Disks
Dec 15, 2008My inspiron E1505's dvd drive doesn't work anymore, i ran diagnostics at the boot screen to verify it.
So is it fixable without buying a new drive and if it isn't is it easy to install?

I have been getting a random blue screen popping up every once and a while, that will "dump my physical memory" or something and then reboot itself after like 30 seconds. my hard drive was the reason for these constant errors. So I backed everything up, in preparation of a real crash. I am in the process of ordering a new hard drive from Newegg.com, and I would like to know if it is hard to replace a hard drive in a notebook, or if I should have Geek Squad do it for $50. Also, I dont think I have the Operating system disc that came with my computer, so how do I order that from HP and how much is it?And last but not least, Is there a post or video with instructions on how to install a hard drive and the operating system?
I have a HP 15 Notebook PC with no dvd drive recently I was sent the system recovery cds from HP. I dont have an external dvd drive. What i do have is a Toshiba Satelight laptop with Widows 7 and a good dvd drive. Also I have a 500 GB external hard drive. I was thinking maybe I could copy the disks onto the external harddrive with the Toshiba dvd drive. Then attach the external hard drive to my HP 15 Notebook by usb port and install Hp recovey disks from the external hard drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEverytime I put a disk into my laptop and try to load it, it tells me the disk is blank. I have tried putting in a blank disk for itunes to burn a cd and when I tried to burn it the drive opened and told me to insert a disk. So then I tried even a different brand of blank disks and still had no luck. I have also put in a actual cd and a cd for a program in but when I tried to run them the drive opened and said to please insert a disk. I'm not sure why its doing this. It was working perfectly fine a couple days before. I have typed "regedit" and deleted the upper and lower filters and then restarted the computer, I have used the control panel to uninstall the drive and then restarted the computer, I have made sure my drive was up-to-date and it said it was, and I have even tried restarting the computer while holding the eject button until the computer was loaded.

Â
Essentially the drive recognises disks when they are inserted and accurately displays files already on the disk, but it gives available space as nil regardless of disk or existing file size. Additionally if a blank disk is inserted it will say that the disk cannot be read and to try formatting. These are standard preformatted disks I'm using.
I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 that came with the partitioned data recovery feature. I immediately created 2 recovery disks. Yesterday, I sectioned my active hard drive so that I could have, in effect, 2 hard drives. The newly partitionedsection of the hard drive is naturally blank and I would like to install my data recovery or disk recovery information on it.

When I insert any DVD ( original XP CD, empty DVD, empty CD, any movie, etc.), DVD drive tries to read the disk. I can hear the disk spinning and trying to read. After 3-5 seconds the spinning stops and the drive re-tries to read the disk again. This happen continuously until I remove the disk.
I can see the DVD-RW Drive icon in My Computer. I can Eject the DVD by right click -> Eject, on DVD drive icon in My Computer.
The DVD drive works properly. I tested it on other laptop that I have, K series SONY VAIO laptop..................
I bought this laptop G500 Lenovo 4 months ago and I am satisfy but unfortunately I found out still it have defects my problem is my cd/dvd rom I got un annoying noisy sound inside when I put a cd on it I guess it will give me problem sooner and now it happens it won't read anymore. I try to search for answers maybe it only a software issue but doesn't work any trial. Uninstall driver and bring it back don't work still there is the annoying sound and not reading. I guess a mechanical failure in its cd alignment that it is spinning but the head is keep on adjusting which creating the noisy sound means it was not align to read the CD.

I bought this computer refurbished so there is a chance the software driver may not be here at all to patch.
I just got the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro 13.3" Touchscreen Ultrabook - (Intel Core i5-4210U) last week. I need it for college, mostly for reading ebooks and PDF files... but also for HTML coding, photoshop, illustrator, and after effects.Â
Â
However, I am having lagging problems when reading ebooks, and PDF files (on Adobe Reader). When I scroll the scrolling is choppy, slow and laggy. Is there a way to make the scrolling smoother? This problem happens both in tablet and laptop mode. The scrolling is fine when I'm on the internet or using another software, it mostly happens on PDF files and ebooks.Â
Â
Just to clarify the lag/choppy scrolling happens BOTH when using the trackpad and when using the touchscrean display. When I open a PDF it is automatically choppy and laggy.Â
i am still under warranty, complete care, next day, bla-bla; i need to get a copy of the microsoft office small business disk so that i can reinstall after i reformat my HD. can i get this from Dell?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have an Inspiron with Vista Home Premium that won't boot and the "restore to shipped conditions" options doesn't work. I need to reinstall the OS but have lost the disk - HOWEVER I do have the disk off a Vostro that I own which is labeled Vista Home Basic.
My question is whether I can use the Vostro's disk to reinstall on the Inspiron (whose product key I have), and if so would I end up with Basic or Premium?

I have a Dell Latitude E6510 that I bought new in 2010. Its only 4 years old, but the HDD I believe is failing as I got this message when I did a Pre-Boot Assessment:

My machine did not come with Windows 7 Disks. Is there a way I can backup the Windows OS so that I can get Disks to install on the new HDD I purchase? Or do I have to buy another Windows 7 license?
I have the Windows 7 Repair Disk. Would this get me going to install Windows 7 on a new HDD? I have my original Windows 7 OS License and Dell Backup and Recovery is installed on my machine. I used The Dell Recovery Tool to make a backup media on an external HDD and this is the file structure that was copied:
Boot
Dell
Sources
bootmgr
Are any of these files the Windows 7 OS or how do I get copies?
you can Call Dell and get them replaced and you can also use the link below to register and get your program

View 1 Replies View RelatedDell's reverted back to making users burn DVD's that contain an image of the Recovery Partition, at least on new Windows 7 consumer systems (Inspiron, Studio, Studio XPS) This is a step backwards, but oh well.
I'll be updating the system recovery guide to reflect these changes over the next day or so.
I'm setting up a my new Dell Windows 8 laptop. Now, I'm trying to create a set of recovery disks in case anything goes wrong, I'm using Dells own software. Unfortunately there seems to be an issue with, in other words its pish, and it fails after creating the first disk when it needs to create four. Every time I put a second DVD in it just ejects with no error message.it seems that a lot of people around here are having the exact same issue. It wouldn't be such a problem if you could boot into the recovery partition by hitting f8 during boot, the only way you can access it,though, is by holding down shift in windows 8 and pressing restart which is absolutely no use if windows won't boot!! I've got a hold of Acronis True Image 2013.
My question is can I make recovery media by creating a boot disk and then creating and image of the PBR partition, which I'm sure holds the recovery data? I can't back up the whole system as there is now 120Gb in data on it. I don't wan to back up the whole system, I just want to be able to restore it to factory default,in case anything ever goes on it, by using DVD media.
I have a friend's Sony Vaio VGN-FZ11M. Over a year old, if not 2. I need to fix it.
All looks fine except the HDD. I took out the HDD and tested it, it makes funny noises and 'click-click-click' noises which tells me the HDD has gone.
I want to buy a new HDD. Ok, but I have no recovery CDs nor (obviously) backup recovery partition. What is best/safest/easiest/quickest option I have?
you may create a second set of recovery disks if you delete all instances of the file: hpcd.sys
I did create a set of recovery disks, I did delete all instances of hpcd.sys. When I attempt to create a set of disks, it says "A set of recovery disks has been created for this PC. Only one set is allowed per PC."
My Acer 5610 had a "Supervisor Password" entered, I believe by my grandson two years ago. I noticed it once, didn't know how go get in so never did. Recently had a bad day. Used what I had for a restore back a few days, nothing worked.
I have the two Recovery Disk I made the day I bought this. Never used them. I can't get the disk to take hold and restore to Factory. I get a message I'm going to try to attach. It's not clear. What is stumping me is the last entry. "[ /NoExecute=Option]" That is the bottom. On the bar at the bottom is "ENTER=Submit" I've tried every thing I know to do.
I've learned to use the PC on my own as I live many miles from a city. Done fair but now I'm stumped. By the way I'm 75 years of age. My learning term as been more than 7 years.
I wanted to restore my Sony Z only to find out that the first of my recovery DVDs hangs after about 3/4 of the installation.
Would anyone be kind enough burn a set for me? I'm happy to pay something for it (though not the outrageous 40 pounds Sony wants to charge me).
