I have spent two plus days searching thread after thread and I am not getting anywhere! If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I just got my 1645 yesterday and what I want to do is to remove the hard drive and put it into my desktop and create an image. I will be formatting the drive removing all three partitions and install another OS. Later on down the road I want to be able to reimage my drive with the original backup. I do not want to clone the drive as I will be using it... I have tried Drive Image and it successfully makes a backup image and when I use it to image another drive the 'OS' & 'Recovery' partitions are fine, and the computer even boots into Windows. But when I use F8 to access the repair console I get a '0xc000000e' error. All of the information I find is somewhat outdated and refers to the period when Dell used Mediadirect.

Background:
A few days ago i bought an Acer 7730 laptop with Windows Vista pre-installed and no disks. After initial hesitation i have decided to keep vista and not downgrade to XP. After all there will be more service packs and tweaking should speed it up lots anyway.
However, i really want to get rid of the three partitions on the hard drive. There is only one physical hard drive but there are three partitions; a hidden 10GB one (EISA configuration) which from what i have gathered is now obsolete, a C: partition 111.44GB and a D: partition 111.44GB. There is no need to split a drive into several partitions now that we have the NTFS file system (unless you are using multiple operating systems of course - but i am not) so this is really annoying me.
I have made the 2 recovery DVD and the 1 applications/drivers DVD. I have an old WinXP disk that i can use to format the laptop if required.
Question:
Using the recovery disks (which i'm assuming contain a copy of my bought OEM Vista that was pre-installed on the laptop), can i delete the partitions, format the hard drive and install Vista onto a single c: partition?
I've done this exact process before with WinXP hundreds of times but i'm not sure whether i can do the same for Vista with just the 3 DVD mentioned...

I have an Aspire V3-772G. I can't create a recovery drive anymore. I ran reagentc.exe in command-prompt and it's pointing to the correct recovery location, but Windows RE is disabled and for some reason I can't reenable it.
Here are some screenshots to describe the problem :

So as soon as I got my brand new Y50-70, and before doing anything on this laptop (not even installing new software), I went tried OneKey Recovery only to discover that it is broken.
I then tried my luck with Windows Recovery (the one provided with every Windows 8.1 copy, not unique to Lenovo):
I first went through system image creation on a recovery drive (1TB WD Elements USB HDD):
1. Find it on Control Panel:
2: Select it (Recovery option):
3. Create a recovery drive:
4. Selected the F: drive (1TB, it's not a *flash* drive just an ordinary USB hdd, does it matter?):
5. Got a nice warning (indeed, this process reformatted the drive, to 32GB only, why 32GB and not the full 1TB?)
Now... let's see if I can restore from this newly created system image:
1. Rebooted from the newly created Recovery Drive (it actually boots!):
2. Selected "Use a device", then received this menu:
3. I selected EFI USB Device. It then went to an intermediate Lenovo boot splash:
4. And shortly after that (without me doing anything) a new prompt, to choose a language:
5. I selected English and then, got prompted for keyboard layout:
6. The system then system to restart again from the Recovery Drive, only to prompt me again with the "Choose an Option" screen (as in step #1). So, I selected "Troubleshoot" this time:
7. I then selected "Advanced options", and received this screen:
8. I then selected System Image Recoery and received this screen:
9. I selected the only option available (Windows 8.1), then got this "Cannot find system image":
10. Why??? I clicked cancel and I was prompted to select an image:
11. So I clicked Next, but got nothing to select:
12. Clicking the Advanced button only provides irrelevant options:

I got this Laptop with Ubuntu to dodge being locked into only having Vista and hit my head during many attempts to install Vista Home Premium SP1 64-Bit.
First problem is I keep getting a "can't use this volume" or "can't find volume suitable for Vista" during partitioning.
Got the Intel driver on a flash drive for it but not sure if I need the flash cache driver or not. Vista 32-Bit hung during setup so..

I uninstalled Itunes, did the registry trick and others to no avail. I believe this is a Vista update gone bad.
this appears to be an all too common and horrible bug. DVD does not show up in device manager or my computer AT ALL.

Recently my brand new studio 17 updated, about a week later I noticed that 50GB had gone missing! I of course called tech support to see if they could help (good luck) after spending hours on the phone they could not really solve the issue, asides from doing a factory reset.
Now again I am having this issue again, once Vista updated it is slowly eating away hard drive space. There is currently 31.4GB being used (yes, this includes all hidden files) on a 450GB hard drive, yet the system reports only 402 GB free space. Each day it decreases about 2-4 GBs ......

I've been trying to help my roommate out on this one and I think that the issue is hard drive is corrupt, but I'm not sure. A few days ago, he told me that Vista has been taking ages to start up.
I tried looking at to see what was going on and we couldn't even get passed the welcome screen. At this time, there were no errors showing up before the Welcome screen loaded. I got the Dell Vista reinstall disc and attempted to repair the files. Doing that didn't do anything. Therefore, I figured that his only option was to reformat.
I followed that guide that's stickied which shows you how to install the mediadirect and vista to each of there own partitions. After doing deleting the partitions and installing mediadirect to its own partition, I proceeded to installing Windows Vista.
Vista then finished installing and restarted automatically as it normally does. After restarting and going passed the first black screen (here you can hit F12 to get to bios), I get an error that reads .....

I have replaced the hard drives with new blank ones, but I cannot now reinstall Vista from the Reinstallation DVD because no drives are seen.
I have updated the BIOS to the latest available version, but still no joy.
I have taken out the drives and, using an external HDD port, can access them from another PC, so I'm certain there's no issues with the drives themselves.
I've tried Paragon 2010 Suite, but even that cannot "see" the drives, so I'm deducing that it's an issue peculiar to this Dell model.

My uncle has a Dell Inspiron 1545 with 3Gb RAM, 160 Gb HD and Windows Vista Home Premium. On boot up there is an error message stating that a back up should be performed immediately as the hard drive has a serious problem.
The good news is that I managed to make a clone of the 160 Gb HD to a 1000 Gb HD (Western Digital Blue) using Paragon software before the original drive failed. The bad news is that the cloning process stopped at 42%, but this 42% included the recovery partition and another part of the HD called Dell Utility.
I installed the cloned WD drive and pressed F8 on boot up, but the advanced boot menu did not appear. Instead I get the error message 'no bootable devices'.
I ran the diagnostics program using F5. All the tests were completed and 'passed'. The BIOS recognizes the new drive as 1000 Gb.
Question: how do I boot the laptop? My uncle does not have any recovery media.

how to make optical drive to be revealed on eject key press if it was turned off according to a powersaving scheme? This issue relates only to Sony Z after Vista clean installation (by this manual: Sony Z series 32bit Vista Clean Install Guide (full functions & no windows activation)). When I had "factory installed" Vista, it worked this way. But after I have reinstalled OS, DVD drive doesn't want to wake up without restart.

I installed XP on my laptop which essentially deleted all the old HP software. And now I want to go back to Vista. Since theres no program to do it, I'm kind of lost. However I see the HP recovery hard drive still. Is there still a way to revert back to Vista or would I need to get a copy of Vista and install it from there?

My laptop is a hp dv6000 with 32 bit vista home premium preinstalled from the store. I never upgraded a laptop before so I don't know what to expect. Are all vista preinstalled systems already activated and do they use the OEM key or the product key on the bottom of the laptop? Recently my original hard drive failed and had no other choice expect to upgrade to a new one. My laptop came with the windows anytime upgrade disc so I used that to clean install vista home premium. Would the user recovery discs work instead on a new empty hard drive? When it asks for the product key the first time, I entered it in using the key on the bottom of the laptop. After everything was complete it said "3 days until automatic activation" and had the OEM key listed, not the one on the bottom of the laptop. I reactivate again using the sticker on the bottom on the laptop and it said "windows is activated", but it still had the OEM key listed. Did I enter the right key both times? Would there be any difference using the OEM key instead? Now about the recovery discs, if the "swsetup" folder was deleted before creating the discs will it still be on the disc even though it's suppose to be a factory image? Will I get the recovery partition and quick play if I reinstall again?

Hardware:
Dell Inspiron 9400
CPU: Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.8ghz
Ram: 2gb
Video: geforce go 9700 gs
Audio: Sigmatel?
HD: Seagate 80gb 7200 rpm
Problem: I was using my typing a word document when all of the sudden a pattern of yellow distortion came accross the screen and windows frooze. I tried rebooting windows but even the splash screen that came up right after you turn the computer on is distorted, during startup every image is distorted somehow including the windows splash screen and all shown dos screens(random characters all over the place in dos). It won't boot into windows normally, it gives a blue error screen and then restarts but it will go into safemode (with distortion of course). I tried plugging into two different crt monitors to see if it was a problem with the monitor but they displayed "Signal out of range." I plugged into an LCD monitor and it would display the image but still showed a "Signal out of range." box bouncing around even though it was showing windows in safe mode (still distorted.) I have never seen this problem before. I booted from an xp cd and did a fixboot comand but it still won't boot into windows normal. I uninstalled the video drivers in safemode which would then allow me to boot into windows but I still had the distortion. I reflashed the mobo bios. (nothing changed) Reinstalling the drivers would cause it to crash and then not allow me to boot into anything but safemode unless I uninstalled the drivers. The problem went away completely for about a day and I was able to install the drivers again and everything was working fine but later it happened again. I noticed that while the computer is having the problem hibernation is impossible (doesn't show the option anywhere). I tried replacing the video card (most obvious culprit at this point) and that didn't even work! I'm thinking it needs a new motherboard entirely.

Firstly I apologize if this has been asked earlier, but I couldn't find an answer to my question. I have a 1530 on order. The OS will be Vista Premium x86. There are 2 things I need to do-
1. Upgrade the HD from a 5400 to a 7200, I have the HD.
2. Install Windows Vista Business - I have an original retail version, and I absolutely need this.
I have the Vista Business Retail DVD. What I want to do is have Windows and the dell partitions configured exactly as they came with the original computer, only with Vista Business, and on the new hard disk. I don't want to alter Media Direct, or delete the restoration partition. Everything should be the same except the Windows Versio

So it seems the HD just stopped working. I had to force reboot and after that all was fine again.
I'd like to make an image/clone of the hard drive in case I need to exchange it to a new one. Can someone point me to a good preferably free program that does the job. I have Vista 64bit OS and a 250GB HD that is some basic model that Dell ship

trying to do a factory image restore on my Studio XPS 1640. I've done this before on other Dells but this one I don't see the Dell image restore option as said in the booklet.
I don't see the Dell Facotry TOols either. I just have the following: startup repair, system restore, system image recovery, windows memory diagnostic, and command prompt.
I chose system image recovery and it doesn't pull up anything - it's for my own images I made. No option to pull up my Dell factory image which I still have in it's own seperate partition.
