I am about 75% sure this dell is the one. I am seriously considering the lenovo U330 (heavier-ugh but w/hdmi port) or a Thinkpad T400 (maybe 400s) because i am hard on my computers
The e4300 is my top choice because of it's weight, but I saw the Studio 14z and was a bit put off. I know consumer vs. business can be apples to oranges, but I it made me start to think...
I got a quick demo of a Dell Inspiron Mini 12 decoding a 1080p H.264 Blu-ray rip (20 - 35Mbps) while running through a Quake III timedemo.
The video clip didn’t drop any frames and the Quake III demo ran at above 30 fps. The engineers on hand indicated that a real concern in these sorts of situations isn’t the GPU horsepower, the PowerVR SGX core can easily handle the two tasks, but rather memory bandwidth.
Poulsbo only supports a single channel of DDR2-533 memory, barely enough bandwidth by today’s standards.
The Imagination Technologies staff also ran a dual stream video decode demo where they had a Atom/Poulsbo netbook playing one 8Mbps H.264 video and a 1080p H.264 video on an external display, simultaneously. Again, memory bandwidth is the only limitation here - the Atom never peaked above 29% CPU utilization."
EDIT: If this was true, then the HD limitations on the Poulsbo chipset is a software/driver issue, not hardware. Furthermore, if this potential was achieved, then Ion would be obsolete -
the Poulsbo uses far less power than the 945GSE, which itself uses far less power than Nvidia's Ion.
It seems my aging XPS M170 died on me, here is what happened...
The original hard drive started giving me errors last week, I backed up my important data just in time right before it gave up the ghost. I got a new hard drive, installed it without a hitch and reinstalled Windows XP.
Up till here all is good, I installed my video drivers, sound drivers, wireless drivers etc, all good. Then installed Zone Alarm and all fine as well but when ZA asks to reboot to continue install I clicked "reboot now", my M170 proceeded to shot down.... and it stayed down for good!!! it didn't reboot at all, so I pressed the power button and nothing, absolutely nothing...
I am thinking my motherboard might have died but not sure, I saw one on eBay for $140 or so, but how can I be sure if it is a dead motherboard? Would a bad CPU cause this apparently dead behavior as well? because I mean, it is like if it didn't have any power at all, no activity of any kind, or lights, full nothing when I press the power button. My wife has an Inspirion 9300 which has same battery, I tested my battery on her lappy and it is fine..
Im looking on tiger direct at RAM. I have a M1530 and I only have 2gb of RAM and would like more to make it future proof. This is whats in it..Module,Dual In-line Memory Module,2GB,667MHZ,2X1GB,512
I think I have decided to purchase a Dell Studio XPS 1340, as I require a new laptop before the end of June and I'm not sure anything better in this class will be available before then.
I will be using it for a bit of everything, including work, portability, hooking it up for presentations, general surfing on the couch and some minor game playing. I have a few questions about purchasing it.
1. CPU. At the moment both the P9500 (2.53GHz) and the P9600 (2.66GHz) cost an extra $388.30. Shouldn't the P9600 cost more than the P9500? Am I missing something here?
2. Screen. I get a lot of glare on my current laptop at work. Does the XPS 1340 have a glossy or matte screen? Does choosing WLED or CCFL have any effect on this?
3. Deals. There is currently a $150 cash off deal which ends tomorrow (Thursday). This seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Should I take this or is there a high likelihood a better deal will be available soon? I will also be using the EPP code as I'm a full-time student.
Are there any other coupons I could use? In addition to being a full-time student, I am also a small business owner (strange combo I know), and have bought Dell desktops for employees in the past. Would I be able to get a better deal going through a small business sales channel .....
Ok, so i got a new 1537 as the upgrades in the 1555 didn't impressed me.
But I have some questions... The T3400 has like 55 Celsius in Idle...is it normal? If so...is better to upgrade later to the T6400 or P8400? Also i would like to buy a backlit keyboard and a bluetooth adapter. Is there any store where I can find both? I need shipping to Canada.
I'm from Canada and I'm very interested in the xp studio 13.
The specs seem really great, and It fits into my sub 1200ish budget.
I've heard that the "flat keyboard" needs some getting used to. How bad is it? I'm somewhat picky when it comes to keyboards. I've also heard about the dell 1340.
I've had my E6400 for about a week now, by far best laptop I've ever owned. Specs are P8400, 4GB RAM, WXGA+ led, integrated graphics, 160GB 7200rmp HDD, 9 cell, FP reader. However, there are a few problems that really bother me and I can't figure out.....
As a preface, things I have already done/tried: Updated BIOS to A11; Unistalled IDT audio driver and installed Vista High Definition Audio; Updated touchpad drivers; Installed Intel Matrix Storage Manager 8.7.0.1007;
disabled HDD indexing and Windows Search; installed SP1; uninstalled Dell ControlPoint Connection Manager, updated video drivers .....
I see that Bestbuy has the Dell XPS X1330 on sale for $949. I was impressed at how loaded this laptop is but upon looking through forums I see there have been alot of issues in the past with the video card, heat, etc... and alot of very unhappy customers. Have these issues been resolved? Is this a good reliable laptop or is it better to steer clear?
Is it possible to make a purchase on Dell.com using both PayPal and a CC directly through dell.com? Like, if I select PayPal as the payment method and only enter the amount that I was deducted from my PayPal account, will Dell.com prompt me to pay the balance with another payment method?
(The reason is I want to use some funds in my PayPal account and take advantage of a Dell.com cashback offer from the CC. Won't get the cashback if the CC payment is through PayPal.)
I'm referring to the Dellienware M17x. I wanted to post this here because I will be purchasing this laptop from Dell Canada.
I was wondering if you guys could tell me how I can save money. I am aware of the EPP 7% discount. IS there any other discount that I could get?
I bought a m15x last year and sent it back since it was defective, I was offered a 5% discount on my next alienware purchase. I called Dell Canada's sales reps and they don't know anything about applying a credit from Alienware.
I sent the email with 5% discount to 5 different reps and they all said that they would send it to their managers and get back to me ASAP. well none of them have gotten back to me .....
I cant believe how much money could be saved if i were to get it from the states!
Where is best value to get one from UK ? it seems as though most money can be saved by getting a refurb, lots on ebay and from a lot of reputable sellers.
where did you get yours from? dell ? ebay ? which seller? etc
I am trying to find a laptop for starting college this fall. I am majoring in Accounting. I was looking around for laptops and am considering an E6400.
I definitly would like a dell because my college is partnered with them and they can do warranty work on campus.
Sorry for overload of questions recently. I ordered an XPS16 ( ) and I am waiting for it to get delivered.
1) Where do I go exactly to apply for the upgrade for windows7? 2) Do I apply AFTER the laptop is delivered or can I apply for it now? 3) After I filled out the respective application, Dell sends me the Software whenever windows7 comes out?
4) I see some posts in threads stating that users with xps16 are using Vista and/or Windows7 and/or XP. Windows7 is not even out yet... how are people doing that
A little about myself. I live in Fresno, Ca. I own my own local auto enthusiast message board, as well as manage a high-end car stereo shop.

Dell is in the process of 'System Exchanging' this machine. They are sending me a Studio 17. I have of course, like every other tech-nerd, watched and read every review I could find, but reviews never tell you what they like and dislike over time. I'm hoping I can get some honest opinions here .....
so I am going to use my EPP to buy a secondary Studio 17, 24" monitor and an Inspiron Mini 9. Out of curiosity, because I really do not know, is there a difference in build quality, materials, workmanship, etc...
for people that have an EPP with Dell and order systems and other devices by Dell? Do "Home" systems differ from EPP systems? Like do EPP systems use used parts or remanufactured parts for a new system? Just curious....
)the screen is nice but its quite reflective though im using it on the train right now and havent had an issue but taking outside in bright sun may be a problem (cant test that right now as its winter here in blighty).
The screen doesnt fold all the way back but currently that hasnt been an issue
the perfect viewing angle has the screen far back enough as to possibly cause annoyance if sitting on a plane/train but only if your really picky
keyboard is nice to use no flex to note and its a good size to type on
I'm thinking about purchasing a Dell Studio 15 as a replacement for my recently dead HP Pavilion dv6500. The HP is dead after 1.5 years most likely due to over heating, even though I use a laptop cooler.
Anyway I'll be using this for work, programming, watching divx/mkv connecting to my LCD TV, web surfing. This will be my first Dell laptop ever so any input from you guys will be greatly appreciated. The specs are below along with how much it'll cost: ...
After some troubleshooting, it seems to be related to the Intel Wifi services, of which I have several listed under "Services" in msconfig.
My Wifi card is the Intel 5300 and if I only run the Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Service, start-up happens without lag. If I add any of the other Intel Services (Wireless REgistry Service, Wireless SSO Service, Wireless Event Log), it can take several minutes of unresponsiveness before things finally work.
Do I need these other services? WiFi seems to work fine, as far as I can tell. I use the Intel Conncection Manager , not the Dell utility to connect.
Second question: I move my laptop frequently from the table to my lap and back, and the adapter plug comes lose fairly easily, even though the cord is not pulling on it. Is this a common problem with the E6500?..
just looking for software/firmware (if i need any) to support the OEM dell blu-ray burner for the m1730 as i just ordered one from an online store...
just curious...i assume that vista will go to windows update to look for drivers when i install the new drive....not entirely sure. i looked on dell's web site and did not find blu-ray specific software for the m1730....
Just got a 1340 from the outlet with the standard base specs that are already quite good.

It was a Scratch and Dent but excpet a few scuff marks on the leather it is almost new .....
i just got my M4400 and from a first contact, i am very happy with it. i have a question about the WiFi Catcher.
it seems it does not recognize the wifi card (5300) although i am able to connect to the internet over wireless. when i press the button, a window that says radio is off appears.
Also in Dell Control Point it seems like there is no wifi connection in the DCP connection manager and all wifi related options are disabled. i can only see and use the dial up and ethernet connection in this software.
I'm in the process of selling a laptop and looking at the E6400 as a replacement. I was just wondering if you all are happy with your purchase, and would you recommend it? Also, I'm thinking of buying it refurbished; is there anything i should be wary of?
