View 5 RepliesI'm a fairly advanced computer user (CS degree, etc), but I've had a horrible time trying to find a reasonably priced laptop that will run a 30" external monitor at 2560x1600.
I finally decided if a an output other than DVI-D would work. I found the XPS 16 which looked like a really sexy laptop, and I checked to see that the the 4670 supports 2560x1600 in theory, and that the DisplayPort to DVI-D would work in theory. I found two other posters on a non-computer forum who said they ran 2560x1600 off an XPS 16.
I tried to verify with Dell that DisplayPort would support 2560x1600 with a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter. I finally found a sales person that sounded reasonably intelligent, and had him contact tech support to verify that it would do so.
So, I started my XPS 16 a little over 24 hours ago, and the the reported resolution from the monitor is 1280x800, and I haven't found a way to override that in Catalyst. (and no, I wouldn't be happy with using a 1080p 12xx by xxxx resolution)
I've spent over an hour on the phone with tech support and can't get anyone that even seems to comprehend the issue (Are you sure your monitor supports that resolution? Is it turned on? Has it worked before at that resolution? etc.)
I THINK an issue is that the monitor is seeing the connection as single link DVI and so only reporting 1280x800, but I don't know....
I recently just purchased and received a fancy Dell e6400 from one of the many dell deals. My eyes are light sensitive from looking at many computer screens over the years and due to this I avoid LCD screens and much prefer flat CRT monitors. My goal is to use the e6400 as my workstation computer while using the VGA out to power my 19in Sony CRT .....

how their system performs with WoW? cause i can't go past fair video quality, w/o the game just being choppy and unplayable. i can't even get past 30 fps, this just seems ridiculous to me. i have all the latest drivers, my pc undervolted, a cooling pad, so i doubt its overheating. i'm using W7, if anyone has any suggestions for me other than a fresh install i'd greatly appreciate it. if worst comes to worse i'll do a fresh install, but i'd rather not redownload all the i have on my laptop.

Im just wondering, I used the mobility modder and the newest driver pack from ATI, which is the 9.12 suite.
However, when everything was installed, I checked my driver version and it's 8.681.0.0 (11/24/2009)
I currently have the default driver which is 8.612. Looking at the ATI, there is a new catalyst suite that came out a few days ago, version 9.8 for the 4000 mobility series. Should I download that, or should I just go for the one listed on the dell site?

View 10 Replies View RelatedMy dell technician ruined my laptop 1640 and they are going to build a new one for me. Shall I go for the 1647 i5-520M + 5730 DDR3 or my previous build 1640 T9600 c2d 2.8ghz + 4670 GDDR5? I've added a screen shot of the specifications.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've decided to replace my dinosaur of a desktop with a laptop and after some searching, the Dell Studio 17 seems to be the best bang for buck.
So the question is which of the two to buy.
#1
$2000 (NZD)
CPU: Intel i5 2.5ghz
GPU: Radeon 5650 1gb
#2
$2500 (NZD)
CPU: Intel i7 1.6ghz
GPU: Radeon 4670 1gb
Option 1 has the better GFX but worse CPU and option 2 vice versa.
Which one would end up with better game performance?
The main games I would expect to play are Bioshock 1 + 2, Mass effect 1 + 2, Starcraft 2.
Since newer versions of this laptop will receive the new 4670 card, is it possible/stable to upgrade current SXPS 16s running the 3670 to the 4670?
Also, I Googled up the specs of both cards, it seems that the 3670 is clocked equally/higher than the 4670 and all other specs are the same.
I'm looking my XPS 1640 using GPU-Z today, and I'm really confused about the GPU code. It reads out M96, which should be mobility radeon 4650 according to this amd website:
http://developer.amd.com/drivers/pc_...s/default.aspx
A right mobility 4670 should have a gpu code M96-XT. The wired thing is that the rest things, gpu clock, memory clock, device id are all right.
Just for the concern, did dell give me an overclocked 4650 instead of 4670 which it should have give me?
I wanted to use the hardware acceleration on the ati 4670 but when i go to use it with powerdirector it shows it as faded, does anyone know if the drivers that dell has doesnt enable this feature on the 4670's?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just noticed on the most recent bios update page for the Studio XPS 16 under the the Fixes and Enhancements tab it says "support new configuration with Gfx ATI Mobility Radeon?HD 4670".
This is probably an indication that the HD 3670 is going to be replaced with the newer HD 4670 sometime soon. If you are thinking about buying a Studio XPS 16 anytime soon you might want to wait.
GPUZ shows my gpu core clock at 399.9mhz and it doesn't move - this is on my 4670 replacement that I received two days ago.
Everything is on "high performance".
What are others getting for this setting? I thought this was supposed to be 675.
The recent addition of the 4670 option is what sold me on the SXPS 16, but I am ok with waiting a bit to save some money.
I guess my question is: in general, how long does it take new products to appear on the outlet website? or if you KNOW when the 4670 SXPSs will hit, can you tell me that?
Is it possible to overclock a 4670 Mobility in my Dell Studio XPS using WINDOWS XP?

Hey guys I've been browsing the forums for awhile for the XPS 16.
Since I don't have the throtlling problem (Thank god because of the new bios and 130 watt adapter)... I'm wondering what the best drivers are for the ATI Mobility graphics..
To be honest, I'm not getting good framerates at all..
I'm using the mobility drivers straight from ATI...
Now I see 3 options..
1. From dell
2. From ATI Striaght
3. Desktop ATI Modded
which one of these are the best drivers?
which one would be better for gaming. i want to play the new call of duty when it comes out. both with the icore7 2.8ghz and 4 gigs of ram
View 10 Replies View RelatedAny conjecture or ideas on when the outlet is going to start selling refurb'd and other XPS 16 models with the ATI 4670 GPU?
As of right now, it's all 3670.
If they might start offering the new GPU within the next 2 weeks, I might wait. They've got some good deals there on everything else I want...

I posted a few weeks ago about how my 1640 might be throttling. While with unclewebb's ThrottleStop shows that when I run Furmark and Prime95, the multiplier of the CPU goes down to 3x.
I'm going to do some intensive testing tonight with my system and hopefully some other 1640 users could come out and test theirs since most of us have different configurations. (Please see my signature down at the bottom for system specs)
Also, I see that in the other thread about the S-XPS 1645, it was normal gaming that caused it to Throttle. Games such as TF2, Demigod, and D.A .....
just wondering if a driver exists, and if so, where to get it? I am a bit of a newb to mac and have looked around and found nothing related to my problem (resolution stuck at 1024 X768
View 3 Replies View RelatedI currently have an ASUS G50V-A2 and am looking to sell it to get a new Dell XPS 1640 with the new graphics chipset.
I have only had the ASUS since last October, but I am always wanting a new laptop every 6 - 12 months and this Dell has caught my eye.
Looking at the specs they are similiar, but the Dell does have a few upgrades to what I have:
2.66GHz processor (Asus - 2.53)
Vista Upgrade to Windows 7 (Asus - no upgrade)
1920x1080 (Asus - 1680x1050)
ATI 4760 (Asus - Geforce 9700GT) .....
i dissasembled my presario cq60 and when i put it together the monitor won't activate.
i tried using an external monitor and the monitor refused to turn on from standby, a safety feature of the monitor. the small card in the underneath with 2 wires leading 2 the monitor, (i assume that is the laptop version of a graphics card) is fine, inserted properly, and i had a slight issue with the plugs fitting, but that was soon resolved.
I have an HP DV 6000T. I just bought a HP Elite M9510f Desktop from HP.com, and I don't have a monitor yet, so I am trying to connect my Desktop VGA to my Laptop VGA in and use my DV6000T as a monitor.
I also have a Sharp TV which I tried using as a monitor but the thing keeps flashing the Power and OPC lights and won't let me see anything.
Anyway I can make my Laptop monitor work with my desktop for the time being?
I wanted to know if anyone has successfully done it or if it's even possible to do on this laptop. Sorry if this is a duplicate thread but sorting through 498 pages of information proved to be a bit daunting. I was looking into a bit and it supposedly possible to do via rivatuna but I figured I'd ask around before fiddling with it myself.
View 10 Replies View RelatedHeya im planning on buying my XPS 16 within the next 2months.
Ive seen that there ATi 4670 costs £50 more than the 3670,
and as im currently unemployed £50 is alot of money.
I play games on ps2, not laptop anymore though, so wont be needing graphics card for gaming.
But so would the 4670 actually provide any other advantages in like laptop speed when surfing net and having multiple pages open at same time,
or increase speed when watching movies online? ect
