I use the cloth that came with the XPS, works for the smudges and dust buildup... but what about the particles that are stuck to the screen, makes me want to scratch them off but I seriously don't want to do that.
View 10 RepliesI've been wanting to clean any residue that's built up under the keyboard the past few months: dust, hair, crumbs, whatever else that may have slipped by despite how careful I try to be with letting debris in. A friend that cleaned my old Toshiba would 'pop' the keys out, but that ended up breaking/loosening some hinges later on, and I would prefer not to have send his laptop to Dell for such a silly reason.
Is there any 'easy' way to this? I'm assuming the safest way would be to unscrew the back and locate the area beneath the keyboard?
This is the new notebook I am looking at - The Dell Studio S1555-018B - it looks pretty nice, and I am strongly considering purchasing it
I have a few questions regarding a clean install ..........
Im running vista 64 home premium and want to use my upgrade discs to get to win 7.
If i want to delete the recovery partition when do i do it? Is the best process to back up my files and then do a recovery back to vistas original state when i first got the machine and them delete the recovery partition?
Then put in the win7 upgrade dvd? Can i merge the recovery partition with the main one in vista after to delete it?
Upon receiving my new Latitude XT2, per the usual, I'd like to perform a clean install of Windows Vista Business.
However, with Dell's ControlPoint software, I'm unsure of the best way to do this.
Those of you with a new Latitude, how did you go about a clean install? More specifically, how did you handle the Dell Control Point software?
Also, what exactly is "Control Vault" and what is it used for?
How well will the E6400 work without the dell DCP software installed. I've had the E6400 only two weeks and thinking of wiping the OS and installing Win 7 again with only the necessary drivers, without all the Dell software. The machine was using over 3.1 gigs of RAM yesterday and there was NOTHING running on the taskbar. Looked at the process list and there was no one process that was consuming my RAM, I was getting nickel and dimed by all the processes that are running. DCP seemed to be a big consumer as well as CPU time.

I’m thinking of doing a clean install on my M1530, and im just trying to decide which options to go for, and which not to.
I will be installing Vista Ultimate. I mainly use the computer for internet surfing, watching films, using Microsoft office, and gaming (Fallout 3, Call of Duty 4 etc.).
The main things I am trying to decide are:

As far as I can see the only advantage of this is getting slightly more (can anyone confirm how much?) battery life whilst watching films on the go. I mainly watch films whilst connected to power, but this could be useful in the future.32 or 64 bit?
I have previously been running 32 bit, but would be more than happy to jump on the 64 bit bandwagon, as I have heard that it’s slightly snappier, and also my 4 gigs of ram would be put to full use. Would there be any compatibility issues with any of my games etc? Would appreciate some info on this. It could lead on to...Dual-boot?

Just checking in to see if there are any important things to note before I start.
Dell is sending me a replacement SXPS16 (the 4th one. The previous 3 have been SXPS13's that have all been defective).
I genuinely hated all the bloatware on the 13's, so would you guys advise doing a fresh install on the 16?
The computer comes with the proper disc to do that, right?
I am concerned, however, as to the shear amount of Dell apps that are pre installed on the 1640 boot partition. I want to keep the dock for ex. ..I know from experience the order in what is installed as well as what is on my utlis disc is important. So-

I have a Studio 15 (1535) and did a clean install with Windows 7 (32 bit) and now I'm in the process of reinstalling my programs.
I used Windows 7 Easy Transfer so I can keep track on what needs to be installed and boy this program is slick.
I didn't install all the Dell software that came with the computer but selected what I wanted

I'm not pleased with some of the bloatware the laptop shipped with, so I just wanted to make sure that I can clean install from the "Reinstallation DVD" my computer came with. The product key isn't on the disc but it does seem to be on a sticker on the bottom of the notebook. Am I safe in doing this? I've already backed up all my files...

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm installing a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive into my E1705.
Yesterday, I pulled the old drive and put the WD into the bay, booted from Windows MCE CD, Windows installed files, rebooted and went to the GUI install screen. I tried to install 5 times and every time I would get the infamous 33/34 minute hang up.
I've read that this is usually due to the install media being corrupted, or Windows not being able to install a piece of hardware. So I also tried my second, never before used Windows MCE install disk (Dell had sent me two copies). That produced the same results.
My only conclusion is one of two possibilities. One, I just got a bum hard drive. I already have a replacement drive on the way from newegg to cover that base.
Two, I read that some copies of OEM operating system disks will not install with certain changes in hardware. Anyone heard of this? Is our copies of Dell Windows MCE stripped down in some way? Is it possible that our copy of Dell Windows would not recognize a WD hard drive?
Would seem really strange that a simple change in hard drive, especially considering Dell designed the bay to be plug-n-play upgradeable, would prevent a clean install of Windows.
I received a new Dell Vostro 1510 a few weeks ago and have to say although the lid looks nice it's a major fingerprint magnet. What kind of an electronics cleaner can I use and what should I use to apply the cleaner directly to the lid with to help keep the lid clean and free of my fingerprints?
Also what should I use to help keep the LCD monitor clean? I certainly won't use Windex and a paper towel. MY monitor is the anti-glare entry level monitor which works great for web surfing and email but not so great for watching DVD's or online videos. It's too late now but if I had to reconfigure the laptop again which other monitor choice should I have selected for better viewing quality?
The HD in my Inspiron 1000 died and I am trying to install XP on my new HD.
The install process formats the drive and loads the system files but then it turns off. Always at the same point.
I can load and run Windows 2000 Pro with no problems.

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabook. I am looking to do a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I am attempting to boot the installer from a USB drive and keep getting the error:

This is also my first time working with a computer that has an SSD drive in addition to the main hard drive. Is there anything special that needs to be done when doing a clean install in regards to the SSD? I just finished doing a clean install of Vista SP1 on my new Studio 1537. Everything has gone well, however when I checked Device Manager I have one device with an exclamation mark next to it. When I clicked on the unknown device properties it tells me that it is "Intel(R) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2919" I've looked all over Dell's Driver and Download site and I can't find the driver for this device nor do I know what category I should look under. When I contacted Dell's support they wanted me to unistall the device and overwrite my current BIOS version, A07, with an older version, A05. I decided that wasn't the best way so I thought I'd ask here hoping someone could help. After my install I loaded the drivers in the following order per Dell's directions: Notebook System Software, Chipset, Audio, Video, NIC Card, Dell Quickset, Wireless NIC, Touchpad. I didn't download and install the SATA drivers from Dell's website because my drive model isn't one of the ones listed for use with the driver. My drive is listed as a ST9320320AS. I'd appreciate any help someone can offer.
