View 6 Replies View RelatedThis afternoon I decided to do a clean install of windows 8.1 on my Acer Aspire v5-431P. Everything went well and it booted up as it should do. After completing the windows setup procedure, I went on to reinstall all the drivers. Everything was still fine. When I was downloading them from the Acer website I heard the sound a windows computer makes when a device is plugged in or out. The screen went off and on and the image was blurry and flickering. Like it's covered in water. I also see everything double. But very vague.
I tried to reboot the laptop, took out the battery, plugged it in and out of the power source etc. The problem occurs after the windows login screen. The acer bios logo and the windows startup logo are perfectly fine but after that it's cr*p. At this point I was certain the screen itself was perfectly fine so I tried testing is on my tv using and HDMI cable. Worked perfectly.
The last thing I tried was reinstalling windows but the same happened. After 5 minutes of usage the screen goes ham again.
I have an order for the XPS 1645 16" and am wondering what bag you guys would recommend.
Ideally I'm after something lightweight and not a heavy duty briefcase style if I can help it.
I see loads of bags for 15.6" and 17" - should I err towards a 17" one?
I'm in the UK, so have been looking at what Amazon offer, this one seems popular:
I have received by new XPS 1645 on 2-Apr-2010
Yesterday while cleaning the laptop lid (thanks to its fingerprint magnet nature) the E and L letters of the DELL logo came off.
Please tell from where can i get the sticker replaced ??
The picture of the peeled logo is in the attachment
It has been a while since I have read this forum and I've had this XPS Gen 2 laptop for a couple of years and am happy with it.
I remember a while back there was a very detailed thread that told of how to do a Clean Install of Win XP for the technically impaired.
This is a brand new, just out of the box, laptop. Is it possible to do a clean install from the hidden partition?
But most important. I want to make a backup of the Out-of-the box state. Then I want to make another type of backup so that I can selectively uninstall items and selectively bring them back from the backup if I need them. How would I do that?
I want to get rid of:
1) All games
2) McAfee
3) MS Office Trial
4) MS Works
5) Welcome center - unless this si somehow needed.
6) Movie Maker
7) Windows Photo Gallery
8) Extras and Upgrades
9) Windows DVD maker
10) Windows Movie Maker
11) Live Messenger Download.
12) Windows Meeting Space
13) Windows Sidebar
14) Table PC
my sytem setup after a clean install of vista home premium.
I think I loaded all the driver ect after the clean install as per the instruction in a post on this site, I then istalled SP1 on.
My first question is that when I boot up the system it boots fine to the desktop but then the HD disk light stays on for a good few minuets with CPU usaged in the 3%-10% ranged will this is going on, after that the HD light just flikers constantly......is this right?
2 Should I load Sony update prgram and run it and Windows update?
3 I have not loaded any Sony stuff so no keys like eject or BluRay etc work I cant seem to find what drivers are need and I dont wont to load all sorts of stuff on as that would defeat the perpuse of a clean install. I have only 50 processor runing after booting up
I ahve a few other thing i like to ask but I will leave that for another post as I think thats enough question for now!

You are correct. Here is that thread.
At this point we are looking for common factors. Post up any other useful information you can think of.
Does anyone know the Hz of the backlights?
Does this flicker still happen on an external monitor?
Human vision factors:
Most people can see flicker at about 80 hz. This is most noticeable in bright light and in the peripheral vision areas. Most people adjust to the flicker rate of their local power so that they no longer notice the flicker.
Most people can see an animation as continuous movement at about 20 Hz. The brain tends to understand that it is seeing an animation and assembles it as movement. On things that are not moving, the flicker is more noticeable as your brain has nothing it can assemble the flicker into.
Some people have said that they can see the flicker while other people around them can't. This could be because some people are less sensitive to noticing flicker. This could also be because the other person is looking at the screen from farther away (say, over the shoulder of the owner) and the screen is centered in their vision, not in the peripheral vision areas. If you are one of these people please let us know it your test persons have actually sat directly in front of the laptop, just like you normally would be when you see the flicker.
I suspect the flicker is actually due to the Hz of the backlights, not the actual refresh rate of the screen.
I'm having this problem at the moment where *sometimes* the screen does not come on during bootup. "The lights are on, yet no-one is home".
If I'm lucky I will see the Dell splash screen and then it goes black but most of the time I get nothing. Strange thing is that the lights are on for the buttons (volume, play, etc) but the screen is not.
I know its not a Windows problem, because I can here the Windows startup sound being played. Its almost like the signal to turn the screen on is not working.
What I'd like to know is how far back the screen on the 1645 tilts.
I like to use a notebook on my lap occasionally and was wondering about that but couldn't find any information on this in the XPS owners thread
(I didn't read ALL the pages!), the review or even using the search method. I do remember something about it not tilting very far back but that could be some confusion with the Envy.
i had changed 2 times the RGB screen of my studio xps 1645, and both screens have a little space between the glossy cover and the two grey borders from which comes out the screen light.
I want to know if everybody else have this problem, or if it is the normality.
I just received this machine, and so far so good.
There is some screen behavior that has me a bit confused though and I'm hoping someone here might have thoughts or advice about it.
Every now and again, the screen gets just a bit dimmer for just a very brief moment, not much, just a bit, and pretty quickly, and then comes back to normal. It almost looks like it wants to go into it's "power saving" mode or something, for a moment, and then back out .....
Since getting my Vaio Z I have been really anal about it and looking after it like a new born baby.
I really need to clean my screen but I dont want to scratch or damage it so I am wondering what do you guys use to clean your screens? Is a lint free cloth with some solution ok?
We have a Dell Inspiron 1525. It has been having overheating problems for a while, so tonight I opened it up, removed the heatsink, cleaned out the clogged up fan and cleaned/replaced the thermal paste on the CPU. While taking off the heatsink, the thermal pad that was on the GPU tore. I didn't have another pad handy, so I used (non-conductive) thermal paste on that as well. Also, while I had the heatsink out, I inspected the CPU and found that one of the corner pins was actually bent outward (yes, it came from the factory that way!), so I (very carefully) straightened it before reseating the CPU.
Now, when I try to start the computer the screen stays completely blank (no Dell logo, no command lines, nothing), the HD and disc drives spin, and after a few seconds the entire system dies...
I have tried some of the solutions (unplug power, hold pwr button 30 sec, plug in power, and boot; remove/swap the memory) but so far nothing has worked.
What could the problem be? Could switching from a thermal pad to thermal paste on the GPU cause this? Or straightening the bent CPU pin? Could it have been intentionally bent to work properly? I've certainly never heard of such a thing...
This is the only Vaio I've owned, but compared to other laptops this screen is very hard to clean without leaving streaks. I've tried the usual cleaners and no matter what cloth I used or how thoroughly I wipe it off, there are ugly streaks.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI cleaned my over-1-year old DV6563 laptop since the heat sink was filled with dust inside. Anyways, I got everything back together, but unfortunally the inverter lamp on my monitor went dead (I got a replacement off Ebay and the monitor works again).
However I have a slight issue. Every time I close down the laptop lid, the screen stays on (it doesn't turn off the screen). I even set windows to go into stand-by when the lid is closed and it does not turn off the screen or go into stand-by (unless I press Fn+Sleep).
I even installed Windows XP to see if it was a Vista issue...however the problem still exists. I do have the lastest Nvidia drivers too.
I encountered a black screen while installing Windows 8.1 from a USB after the logo in the beginning.
I format my hard-drive (SSD), I had Windows 7 installed on it.
I removed the harddrive from my laptop.I attached my drive to an USB adapter and removed the partitions on the drive with "Create and format hard disk partitions" on another PC.Put the hard-drive back in the laptop.Tried again and the installation works smoothly!

when i first got this laptop i noticed that the screen was distorted and there was red lines everywhere and the screen was shaking abit. so i contacted dell and they sent me a repair guy to fix it. he fixed it in about 15min by pulling apart the laptop and replugging in the screen. but now its happening again. so i think the thing that plugs in is loose or somethin. so what do u think i should do out of the following options.
1. open it myself and replug it (im a noob and will try remember best what he did)
2. get techinician to come in again (bothersome as i have school)
3. ask dell for a replacement laptop.
im using m1530
I just bought a brand new Sony Vaio VPCF11M1E and I have the following problem:
Because in normal stand the screen is very small, I enlarged it to x150%. Everything becomes bigger, but the following parts are blurry and absolutely not sharp:
-Pop ups, of programs and of windows itself (like advanced settings of something and then a new windows pops up, that one is then totally blurry; you can read it, but it is not the good resolution)
-Google chrome (and with that, all the internet pages)
-The google chrome on the desktop is also very blurry, while all the others, are still sharp (after the enlargement by 150%)
I have tried everything (32 bits colours is on, cleartype is on). I also did a system restore to the first days I bought the laptop and then it was on 100% so the resolution was excellent, but then I put it on 150% and again, the parts I mentioned above, were blurry.
i broke my lcd screen a few days ago and i got a replacement from ebay. i installed it but i can see the image on my screen but it is verrry dim. there's no back light. so i put the old screen and turned it on and the back light is very bright but the lcd is cracked and messed up. i don't understand how could that be that the new screen is dim and the old one still is bright but messed up.
the model of the laptop is hp dv6605us
Of the 14" laptops that dell offers, which one has the best screen option?

I have a 4 year old Dell Inspiron 6000 that has recently been giving me a number of problems. For the past two days the laptop has been flickering between the display and a black screen, with it becoming somewhat more frequent as time went on.
I had read that it may be a loose wire and I had planned on opening it up and attempting to fix it myself (the warranty is over and I'd rather attempt to fix it myself first before paying to have it fixed at extremely high prices).
However, the lower right corner of the screen has recently started to become incredibly hot and noticeable smoke and burning has begun to occur. I immediately shut off and unplugged the computer and have not used it since .....
if there was any way to put a bigger screen in one of these and how much it would cost......

Last week, I put the computer into safe mode to scan for viruses, and left it for an hour before logging in. When I came to log in, the computer screen is all scrambled..
I thought it could be a temporary problem or it may be overheating, so I restarted it a while later. However, the screen is still scrambled. Here is what it looks like..
I have a Inspiron 6400 laptop which has a tru life screen, but it's the shiny type that is more of a mirror than a monitor
I've just upgraded to a latitude 6500 and the wife is having mine but hates the screen, so I need to get a matt finish one..... I guess cheapest place is eBay???
I also want the new screen tosupport a higher resolution, would this mean I need a new gfx card, as I'm sure it uses a intel one built into mobo ....
Whenever I unplug my laptop from external power, the screen considerably dims and the taskbar turns white over it's usual blueish black. I've gone into the power settings and changed them so that brightness is 100% when unplugged, but to no avail. According to my computer it's at maximum brightness when unplugged but it's obviously not. Trying to increase the brightness by the sun key or pressing Fn up doesn't work either. Tried to go into BIOS via F2 but couldn't find a video or brightness option.
