HP/Compaq :: DV6500/Recently Opened To Clean Fan Now Screen Says On Lid Closed
Jan 2, 2009
I cleaned my over-1-year old DV6563 laptop since the heat sink was filled with dust inside. Anyways, I got everything back together, but unfortunally the inverter lamp on my monitor went dead (I got a replacement off Ebay and the monitor works again).
However I have a slight issue. Every time I close down the laptop lid, the screen stays on (it doesn't turn off the screen). I even set windows to go into stand-by when the lid is closed and it does not turn off the screen or go into stand-by (unless I press Fn+Sleep).
I even installed Windows XP to see if it was a Vista issue...however the problem still exists. I do have the lastest Nvidia drivers too.

It is a Refurb, but I have had very good luck with their refurbs. I am typing on a XPS M1530 Refurb that is flawless.
Anyways, I got the Mini 9 yesterday from FedEx but got home so late that I decided to wait till today to open up the box. Box is in fine shape. Laptop is not. It looks like it is cracked behind the screen. Lots of dead/broken pixels in both horizontal and vertical lines.
Worst part about it? (And I KNOW it was stupid move on my part, but I ordered a Runcore 32GB and 2GB of ram that I will be getting tomorrow, should have waited until I knew the laptop was good).
So what should I expect in the exhange process? I am going to press to do a cross-ship (I know they do this for XPS's).

I have an Acer Travelmate 6292 and the screen turns black when I open it up all hte way. If I go to close it and it is about 6 inches open, the screen comes back on. Im guessing a wire or plug is not working right.

For me it happens when I shut the laptop screen and open it again right away. If I wait a few beats before I open it, the screen lights up again just fine.
But if I open it right away after closing it, the screen goes blank, though the laptop seems to be running just fine.
Hitting Fn-CRT/LCD does nothing, nor do any other of the function keys.
I even tried hooking up an external monitor and banging away at the CRT/LCD combo, but the external monitor is just as blank as the laptop LCD.
Hard power-down will restart the laptop and the screen comes back fine, but you've lost any unsaved work .....

Dropped my computer and now it wont boot up. Instead it just keeps turning on and off. The screen is also cracked. HP tells me that the hard drive or motherboard have been shifted with the impact and are not being detected properly causing the power cycling. They are offering to fix it for $400. I would like to attempt to make the repairs myself, if possible.

I have a pavilion dv6, working perfectly till I closed the lid ( probably a bit too hard :/ ) and then when I opened the lid these vertical white, red and green lines are there. And a black stripe at the bottom of the display. Also horizontal grey bars covering the start button completely.

I have a client that brought me their HP Pavilion DV6500 laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium edition) that seems to have a severe issue.
When you attempt to power it up the lights above the keyboard all light up and you can hear the hard-drive spin up but then it reboots itself and begins a continuous reboot cycle. Nothing at all appears on the screen ever. The DVD/CD drive spins up momentarily (indicated by the yellow LED) but powers off when the laptop reboots itself (as one would expect).
The only way to stop the continuous rebooting is to press & hold the ESC key; this prevents the computer from rebooting, the lights stay on, but nothing appears on the screen and the DVD/CD drive will not read the recovery disc(s).
I have taken the following trouble-shooting steps:
1) Unplugged the unit from AC power & removed the battery. I was sure to hold in the power button for 30 seconds to ensure the capacitors were properly drained. This reset did not fix the issue.
2) I reseated the RAM and switched the RAM sticks (there are two of them) in trying to determine if it is a RAM issue; no affect with this attempt either.
3) Have attempted to boot into SAFE-MODE many times with no luck.

Is this by design? I never noticed it before, and I'm wondering if it's always been that way, or if something has recently gone wrong.
I have it set not to go to standby or anything when I close the lid, but it seems like it should still turn the backlight off to conserve battery.

If you're the type to watch the late stock tickers, you might have noticed that NVIDIA's stock just took a pretty big hit, down 24 percent to $13.56 -- that's because the company just informed investors that "significant quantities" of previous-generation graphics chips have been failing at "higher than normal rates," and that it's lowering its Q2 estimates due to pricing pressure. NVIDIA will be taking a $150M to $250M charge against earnings next quarter to cover the cost of repairing and replacing the affected chips, but didn't specifically announce what products were defective, just that they include GPUs and "media and communications processors." Laptop makers have apparently already been given an updated GPU driver which kicks in fans sooner to reduce "thermal stress" on the GPU, and NVIDIA says it's talking to its suppliers about being reimbursed for the faulty parts. That's great and all, but we'd really rather know which chips specifically are failing -- if you're serious about playing in the big leagues, you better come clean, guys.
For someone who has a 7900GTX which is getting "fevers" regularly, this angers me. Hopefully the "repairing and replacing" comes with new parts for laptops and customers new and old like Dell did with the LCDs.

I have not used my webcam for a while, but recently updated Skype. When I went to use the web cam it was not detected. When I try Cyberlink Ucam it says no webcam detected. I checked the driver in Device Manager and it is ok. I used HP Recovery Manager and reinstalled the Cyberlink software but it is still undetected. Is there some keyboard switch for the camera or something simple that I am missing??

I have an HP Pavillion dv 6500. I am having a similar battery issue that has been discussed in other posts. The original battery "died" a couple of Months ago, and I purchased a new one from HP.
Now the icon in the System Tray shows "0 % available (Plugged in, not charging)". I installed the HP Support Assistant, and ran the Battery Test, The result was: Status: "Calibrate" and Current State: "Unknown".
Problem is that part of the "Calibrate" procedure is to allow the Battery to charge-up (to 99 to 100% charge), but I am unable to accomplish that, since the battery is not charging - the charge remains at 0 %, and never seems to charge.

I have a HP dv6500 running Windows 7 for which I want to upgrade the pci-e mini wifi card to one of the intel cards available on Newegg, or perhaps a 4G card. However, I have read that the stock HP BIOS has a whitelist for wifi cards, and only select cards will work.
I have located a modified F5A bios that I am willing to try: [URL] .....
I have also heard that flashing a BIOS from Windows 7 will damage it, and the recommended solution is to reinstall Windows Vista. Is there some way around this? Could I perhaps use a PE CD?

Suddenly, would not resume from sleep when the lid was opened - whether or not the power was plugged in. Long pressing the power button restarted windows but as expected an error message was in the event log "System did not shut down properly..." Re-installed Windows 8.1 64Bit Pro from scratch - totally clean re-install. Now - goes to sleep without any problem.
However, on opening the lid only wakes up if the power plug is not plugged in.If the power plug is plugged in the laptop does not wake up.It is extremely disappointing to have paid big bucks for an excellent laptop to be let down by this problem within a month. I suspect a hardware issue. I am seriously considering returning this to Dell and looking elsewhere. I would think that customer support for products under warranty would be available over the weekend..but that doesn't seem to be the case. I have to wait till Monday! All drivers are up to date and the latest BIOS updated (A07) is installed.

I just got my Aspire V touch, so I don't understand why the Acer applications keep crashing when I try to open them. All of my other apps open fine without crashing. (Acer apps i.e.: Acer Recovery, Acer Quick Access, etc.) Why only Acer apps are crashing? I'm trying to make my recovery files.
Also, what is AOP Framework? It always crashes when my laptop is waken up from it's sleep. Can I uninstall it?

I have Lenovo yoga 2 pro with a clean installed Windows 8.1 Pro. My Lenovo Energy Management doesn't function properly.
When I open the Energy Manager and click the menu button (the one with 3 dots and 3 stripes) the energy manager freezes and I can't do anything with it. It doesn't let me click any buttons or even close it with the little x. I can only close it from the little task bar icon.
There is another weird thing, but I don't know wheter it's related: Every time I open the energy manager I get a windows security message from Outlook where I have to fill out my username and password. This only happens if outlook isn't running... This security message dissappears within a few seconds without doing anything, and then for a second another outlook message is displayed that says something about accessing a server... I don't know wheter this is related to whether the energy manager doesn't work, but it seems kind of strange to me...
I tried reinstalling the Energy Manager (v. 1.0.1.49) and tried installing a newer one (v. 1.0.1.51) found here: [URL] ... But I keep having the same problem with the security message and the energy manager freezing.
