Nov 9, 2014I have a Dell Inspiron 14x 5423 that will reboot/restart but will not shut down, sleep, or hibernate. The screen shows shutting down, the screen and the hard drive turns off, but the power light and fan stay on until the battery dies in the laptop. I hold the power button and everything shuts off. When booting, I do not get the windows improperly shut down error the I normally get when I just hold the power button to shut off the computer so I suspect the operating system is shut down! I have tried updating bios to A13, video drivers, Chipset drivers, and Windows 8.1, The laptop passes all diagnostics.I even tried admin command prompt and "shutdown /s /f /h 0" command with no different results. Changed all settings in Control Panel to enable sleep and/or hibernate. I downloaded KB hot-fix which says it is for Windows 7 as another test.

Feb 14, 2013I have a Inspiron 14R for about a year and half now. This computer has done this since day one for some reason:
When I put the 14R in SLEEP mode, the computer remains in sleep mode for about 2-3 hours, then the computer shuts itself off, or goes into hibernation mode on it's own. The computer has Windows 7 Premiuim.
I have the power saving modes all set too SLEEP, and none in hibernation in any of the selections. I cannot for the life of me why this computer does this. I have a Lenovo I bought about a year later using Windows 7 Premium with all the same settings in the POWER section, and while in sleep mode, it STAYS in SLEEP mode, no matter the length of time in that mode. Any setting I need to turn off, and where to find it?
Dell Inspiron 5423 :: Screen Distorted Almost On Every Boot Up
Dec 24, 2014I have 5423 i3 and recently I started having a problem with which was that on almost every boot the screen would be distorted I.e vertical and horizontal lines would appear rainbow like distorted colours and although anything was barely visible I could make out that the screen ws divided into these four grids like appearance each acting like a separate unit by itself AND along with this the laptop would make 8 beeps on boot until window load screen would appear.
When this problem first started I solved it by holding the laptop screen at an angle then powering it on or sometimes pressing the power button and closing the lid and after I would hear win startup sound I would open it and it would work fine, but now since a day or two ive tried every method amd nothing works...

I uninstalled this one as well leaving me with the bare bones driver that comes with windows. After installing the modded driver again and restarting it began to work again................................................
Dell Inspiron 14Z 5423 :: Will Not Boot - Stuck On Logo Screen
Jan 20, 2013Been working on my laptop all weekend and took an hour break came back and when the laptop tried to boot up got stuck on the dell screen. The screen it is stuck on has the dell emblem in the middle and has inspiron under that and a progress bar that is completely empty. In the bottom left corner is has F2 Setup and below that has F12 Boot Options.
I have tried to turn it on and press F2 all that happens is the F2 becomes highlighted but nothing seems to happen. I can do the same for the F12. I have tried booting it while plugged into wall and when it's not doesn't seem to change anything. I have left it on for a while now and every few minutes the screen goes blank and makes a few clicking noises and a few of the lights on the top corner of bottom part of laptop flash. It then just gets stuck in the same frozen screen.
The laptop has a weeks worth of very important data I need on it....
Dell Inspiron 14Z 5423 :: Boot Failure - Fails To Load Setup Screen
Apr 14, 2013My husband came home from work saying his laptop doesn't work, being the naturally skeptical wife, I tried to boot it up, thinking I'll f10 (Well, f12 - turns out) the problem away. If that worked, we wouldn't be here. Anyway. 9_9
The laptop turns on without a problem, and presents me with the Dell loading screen. The loading bar is present, but nothing is actually 'loading'. There are two options in the lower right hand corner, "F2 - Setup" and "F12 Boot Options". If I turn the laptop on and press one of these buttons really quick (within a second), then that option will be highlighted, but nothing more occurs. I've tried this for both F2 and F12.
I've tried:
-Boot Options - fails to load the options screen
-Setup - fails to load the setup screen
-Turning the power off and holding the button down.
-PSA ... Pre-startup Analytics...? Didn't work. Spent 5 minutes tapping F12 once a second.
-All of the above with and without the AC adapter in.
-Taking the battery out (Oi, that was fun.) and plugging it back in.
None of these yielded different results.
Dell Inspiron N5050 :: Computer Crashes On Sleep Mode
Feb 21, 2013I have a Dell Inspiron N5050 that unfortunately shuts down on its own or fails to respond when it goes to sleep mode. This doesn't happen every time it goes to sleep but it still happens quite frequently. When it shuts down on it's own, it displays a "Windows Did Not Shut Down Properly" message once it is turned back on. It very rarely displayed a Blue Screen of Death that mentioned something about drivers but this hasn't popped up in a while.
I've been in contact with a Dell representative for about a week now, having him call me every day to remote control my laptop and try something new. He updated all of the drivers he could find (I previously did this but he decided to go ahead and re-download them anyways), updated the BIOS (again, tried that already on my own), ran all sorts of diagnostic tools (the only one that he ran that I hadn't already run was the WinDbg X86 program), changed sleep settings (tried that on my own too), had me scan the entire computer for about 3 hours to check for hardware issues (It was one of the options under the F12 key when the computer first boots up and it came up clean), and yesterday he set up a new user account and had me use that for a day to see if the problems were linked to my profile (didn't even think about that one). It's actually caused the problem to occur more frequently to be quite honest. Today was especially bad, as the computer crashed 9 times and ended up deleting the newly created profile on its own in an attempt to repair itself.

Feb 8, 2009My wife and daughter both have Dell Inspiron 1525's. My daughter's works flawlessly while my wife's has one irritating glitch. When the lid is closed, instead of going into sleep mode, it reboots itself. It doesn't complete itself though it always stops at the "windows shutdown improperly how do you want to restart" or something like that screen...it's the dos screen that says do you want to start windows normally or in safe mode, etc.
When it does this it never shuts off so I'll get home from work or I'll get up in the morning to find the fan has run all night...It was purchased in august and I'd hate for my wife to prematurely burn this thing up.
I've gone into ms config and one by one tried to isolate what the problem could be. Sometimes I have it narrowed down or actually got the culprit because once in awhile it'll do what it's supposed to do....then next time the lid gets closed it goes back to the existing problem.

Feb 20, 2013I have a dell Inspiron N5110 which is just over a year old. I upgraded to windows 8 not too long ago and my laptop has been just fine until today. When I close the lid or do anything to put my computer to sleep, it freezes up. The power button light stays solid and it seems like the computer is stuck. The only way to get it to do anything is to hold the power button down. My bios is updated to A11 which is the latest version. I don't know what else to do. Seems like I've tried everything but I can't figure it out.

let it go to sleep, and put it in my bag. The problem lately has been that when I close my laptop, it does not go into sleep mode, even though it is set for it to do this.
It will do this on both battery and AC power. I will put it into sleep overnight so it is in sleep when I put it in my bag in the morning.
And once last week I put it in there thinking it was a sleep and then 3 hours later while I was at work,

I have set it to goto sleep when lid closed (if any1 suggested this). I come back open up but the laptop didnt go to sleep, HDD activity is minimal but I can hear it spinning.
Also the screen is still bright but black, I can still change the brightness though with the Fn+upArrow or Fn+downArrow. In order to return to functional state I have to HARDreset.
