Dec 8, 2014My uncle has a Dell Inspiron 1545 with 3Gb RAM, 160 Gb HD and Windows Vista Home Premium. On boot up there is an error message stating that a back up should be performed immediately as the hard drive has a serious problem.
The good news is that I managed to make a clone of the 160 Gb HD to a 1000 Gb HD (Western Digital Blue) using Paragon software before the original drive failed. The bad news is that the cloning process stopped at 42%, but this 42% included the recovery partition and another part of the HD called Dell Utility.
I installed the cloned WD drive and pressed F8 on boot up, but the advanced boot menu did not appear. Instead I get the error message 'no bootable devices'.
I ran the diagnostics program using F5. All the tests were completed and 'passed'. The BIOS recognizes the new drive as 1000 Gb.
Question: how do I boot the laptop? My uncle does not have any recovery media.

Feb 2, 2010I have a VGN-FZ240E that has some issues. I am sure that previous virus removal efforts have damaged my operating system beyond reasonable repair.The only real solution I believe is to reinstall Vista. 2 Problems, 1 I do not have the recovery dvds, 2 the system will not me make a recovery set. I can see a recovery partition on the disk when I ran Easues Partition Manager. In fact, I copied the recovery partition to a logical drive I created on the hard disk. So now I can see it in explorer, and browse it.
I am wondering if I copy the recovery partition to a new hard drive can I then start the new drive as a boot device and reinstall Vista from it ? If I can then my plan would be to do the transfer files and settings from original drive to get me back up and running correctly. This would also archive all my stuff in case of an unfortunate mishap. I understand I will need to reinstall apps and such I just do not want to have to dish out the extra $30 for the disks. And I have already combed this machine and cannot locate the WUA files.

Apr 23, 2014I have a Pavilion DV6-2140EI notebook with a failed hard drive. I purchased a new hard drive but to my surprise, all recovery disks or system image files are useless without the recovery partition on the drive. It appears that HP and Microsoft teamed up to not support hard drive failure. As you no longer get the original operating system on disk anymore, it looks like one is forced to purchase Windows again after hard drive failure.

Aug 30, 2009I’ve just done a clean install of my Dell Vostro -- reinstalling vista and removing the recovery partition in the process. Outcome = a ‘cleaner’ machine with none of the preinstalled bloatware/c**p from Dell. (first time I’ve done anything like this, but followed a brill guide in the Dell section of this forum ).
I’m about to tackle my Mums Compaq Presario C310EA. The aim is to remove all the rubbish she has accumulated over the years, incl any spyware/ adware she may have, and generally have a bit of a clean sweep…. hopefully resulting in a faster laptop. I’m backing up her data, and moving some of my Dad’s stuff somewhere else.
Basically I want to clean up as much as poss, but unfortunately she has no xp disk, just the recovery disks (cds) she burned when she first got the laptop.
As she has no xp disk I guess the best I can hope for is to reset the laptop to the factory settings (?) .. not ideal, but I don’t think the (factory set) bloatware is too much of an issue for her – she’s not a heavy user.
Should I use the recovery partition for this, or do I need to use the cds she burned? .
I’d like to know the best approach – and can’t seem to find a set of instructions to follow.

Jul 8, 2013I have a pavilion dv7-6b50ei notebook pc bought 2012. It always gives a command prompt pop up which doesn't stay long enough to read. I also felt there's a virus on it which my anti-virus couldn't solve so I tried factory resetting but when I restart and press F11 it gives an error(something like a boot.. is missing). so I tried my recovery discs. Disc 1 of 4 ran fine but disc 2 keeps stopping with an error.
Now the laptop doesn't load as I think the OS has been formatted during the recovery and don't know what to do. I feel disc 2 is bad too because it also gave an error while trying to copy it to a USB pen drive. I have also tried an external dvd and run the hp test on the hard drive; the hard drive passed the test. If I can get a new set of recovery discs, it would solve my problem.

Mar 13, 2011When trying to restore the factory image (F11 during boot), the laptop seems like it is trying to boot the missing Windows installation (Windows boot manager error page).The partitions "SYSTEM", "HP_RECOVERY" and "HP_TOOLS" have not been touched. The ~15 GB recovery files are still there!The Windows partition (2nd primary) has been deleted and recreated as an NTFS partition. Since then the recovery process will not start.

Dell (folder has the factory image) and tools folder (has pcrestore.exe). I assume the are required for restoring dell to factory default.
Now along with these 2 folders there are many other folders ( windows, users, program files, programData and sources) . Could any one tell me what these other folders are for? and do i need these?

Mar 16, 2009I made a DVD as a backup of the recovery partition on an Inspiron 9300. When I run recover.exe, I can see the *.gho file and I can select it. But for some reason, it says it's 76GB in size.
I can't select individual partitions so I can't copy it to the second partition. I know it's not absolutely necessary to have it but the old hard drive was crashing.

Following the manual, I hit F8 but cannot see anything relating to the Dell recovery options only win7 recovery options
I did upgrade to the latest bios from the Dell XPS 15 drivers site but surely they wouldnt have removed this options

1) Is there any reason to keep the recovery partition and am I safe to delete it and regain my 10gb?

I have a friends Dell 1545 and I think the Boot Manager/Loader is screwed up b/c it is not booting into recovery. I've read that those recovery disks bring your notebook back to the state as it came from the factory, so that would include the recovery partition, right?
