Oct 2, 2009I have the WLED Full HD display with the 4670 card. The issue I am having is that on the right side of the screen (rightmost two inches) on a white background only on the white area you can see a faint flickering that sometimes looks like waves coming up from the upper right conner. Again, this effect is very faint, yet visible if you know about it. Is like the wind is messing up the "water" or something.
To see it/test it open IE (or notepad etc) at google and look at the right most side in the white area. It is easier to see if the screen is tilted away from you or looking from under, however, I can see it in the regular position I use.
If you have the same configuration can you please check yours if you see anything?
The problem it is not visible in an external monitor.
Dell replaced my screen in which the problem is milder than the previous screen, but it is still there.
I kinda accepted it as fact of life for the screen, however, when I update the ATI driver, during the update process the screen flickers for a second or two (goes black) and after that there is no problem until I reboot. So apparently the driver is reseting something that makes the problem go away.
I now have Win7 RTM, but the problem was present with Vista and in the Dell Diags CD (if you move the Diags window to the right). I have the A10 BIOS, the problem was also present with A8.
The screen brightness setting does not affect it.
I run a couple screen test software with a lot of patterns no additional problems there ,i.e., no distortion of the patterns, other than the above issue on a white background.
I do not mean to be picky about it, but it bugs me since my other laptops do not have this issue and now that I found that the issue can go away momentarily with the driver update/change.
Dell :: Received 1640 Review & Pros/Cons On Common Concerns & Questions
Jul 28, 2009I received my 1640 yesterday. Big props to Dell, since I bought it on Friday around 3pm (outlet "previously ordered new") and Fed-Ex attempted to deliver it on Monday at 10am (picked it up at the distribution center at night).
I also received my 9-cell battery, but haven't had a chance to use it or review it, so this will focus on the 6-cell.
First - Boxing: Non-fancy tan cardboard box. The laptop was encased in foam and a foamy-sleeve.
No bags were included with this laptop. I got a slim AC adapter (probably about 1/3rd weight of the previous bricks), some cds, and the laptop. Nothing else. Should I have gotten a sleeve of some sort .....
Dell :: Weird 1640 Notquitebutalmost Blue Screen Of Death
Oct 6, 2009So lately my SXPS 1640 has been crashing every so often, with a blue screen coming up saying:
POWER_DRIVER_STATE_FAILURE
(or something along those lines)
saying that the computer is restarting to protect the device. I haven't been able to read all of what it says because it restarts to quickly but it's getting really annoying as it is happening more frequently.
It also generally only seems to happen when I've been using it with the battery only and not when it's plugged into the socket.
Dell :: 1640 Speakers Weird (right Hand Side Speaker Is MUCH Louder Than My Than The Left Speaker)
Mar 2, 2010I've been listening to a bunch of podcasts on my laptop lately and realized that the right hand side speaker is MUCH louder than my than the left speaker, in fact if I lower the balance on the right speaker to 0% and left to 100% it's not half as loud as the right at 100%. Is this normal? If not is there a fix for this?
Also when typing, if I press the Caps lock key too fast the cursor disappears and my typing is interrupted anyone know is up with that?

Feb 15, 2010Finally i have received my Studio1557 this morning. it came along with pre installed windows7 home premium 64bit. but i had Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit and as i like windows Vista more than Windows7, so i have just installed it.
now i m updating service packs. i will install Windows7 as well. anyway, i want to share with u something that, once windows is booting, after the dell logo it takes 30seconds to show up the log in screen. it's unusual.
Dell :: Received My Studio XPS 16, But Now It's $150 Cheaper!
Mar 4, 2009So I ordered my XPS1640 about 2-3 weeks ago. Arrived at my house on Monday. Later that day I go onto Dell's website, and see my exact same laptop on sale for $150 less than what I paid.
The only difference is lack of McAfee and a smaller HDD. So I customized it the same as mine, with McAfee and the larger HDD and I still would've saved $60-70.
Do I have a legitimate beef here? Should I call and complain, and will they do anything for me anyways?

May 7, 2009I just received my E6500 from the outlet after having returned a new studio 17.
1. Was I supposed to receive any sort of owners manual with this thing?
There are a handful of disks but no manual save for a small warranty booklet.
2. It has XP on it and I think it came with the ability to put vista business on it. I am not particularly wedded to xp, should I just go ahead and put vista on? Is vista closer interface wise to whatever the next generation of windows is (windows 7)?
3. This E6500 has the 1440x900 led screen as did my studio 17. The screen on the 17 was absolutely brilliant but the screen on this E6500 seems more fuzzy or dull. Not as sharp and vibrant as the screen on the 17. To be perfectly honest, the screen on this E6500 doesn't seem that much nicer than the one on my 2001 Latitude.
4. Refresh my memory on how I increase the pixels to get bigger text.
5. When I hit the function key and the "auto" screen brightness key the screen goes very dark. Is this supposed to be the ambient light/brightness deal?

1080p monitor is a must unless you need large text. The 1080p screen is perfectly fine for all use. I thought it might be too hard to read, but actually find it to be perfect given how crisp the image is.
Build quality is good, not as good as the XPS but still decent. At work I use a Lenovo T500 that has a magnesium skeleton under the lid and it very solidly built .....

Just charging and setting it up now so let me know of any questions and I'll try to answer.
Couple of things right off the bat. It looks just like an oversized mini 10 (we never got any of the 12's)
The ac adapter is the same unit they provide with the bigger dells like the studio 14 and 15, not the nice compact unit that comes with the mini 10

Mar 3, 2010Has anybody ordered the RGBLED display and received the WLED one instead? I ordered the RBGLED (as shown on my receipt and Dell confirmation email) but my shipping confirmation says WLED. I am on the phone with them now, but they are only seeing WLED now (since that's what it's now showing for them). If you had this issue, how did you get it resolved?

Feb 12, 2010I own an Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop. I bought it in August 2008, and my warranty covers me until 2011.
My graphics card was overheating and artifacting (8600m). I sent it back to dell last friday and received it back today, the paperwork showed that they had replaced the graphics card and also the motherboard. i booted up the system only to find that they have replaced the graphics card with the 8400m GS, I've just sent them an email explaining the fact that im not happy etc, and am waiting for a response.
I understand that they not have any replacement 8600m cards, and i also read on these forums that american customers have experienced similar problems. The system cost me over £1000 and to say im angry is an understatement, i will give them a ring tommorrow.

Dec 8, 2009I just got in the Dell SXPS 1645 with RGBLED. The only reason I bought this thing was because I heard that the screen was so amazing and the best there was. Well, I'm looking at it right now and it doesn't seem so great to me. I mean it's ok, but my jaw didn't drop...at all. In fact, it was a big letdown.
My first reaction was, is this thing a matte screen? Because it doesn't seem as "glossy" as my old Vaio AR-590E. It seems a little grainy to me. But now that I think of it, Dell never advertised it as being glossy, I just assumed it would be.

Before I tell them what parts I need in a replacement, I need to know if the M6400 RGBLED screen (not the Covet) is matte finish?
I'd really appreciate it - I can't trust their sales staff to actually know. My gut instinct would be that the E2E RGBLED screen is glossy, while the other is matte... but I don't want to replace my glossy with another glossy!

Jan 28, 2010Can anyone who recently purchased an XPS 13/16 confirm whether or not they received the fast access cd and microfiber sleeve? I bought an XPS 16 and was told bya tech that fast access is not available as a disc and that the sleeves are no longer being shipped with the systems.

Feb 10, 2013PXE-E53: No boot filename received.The client received at least one valid DHCP/BOOTP offer, but does not have a boot filename to download. There are several possible causes:
• The 060 DHCP option is not set during installation, on Windows Server 2008 with the DHCP service, is installed locally. To resolve this issue, modify the following PXE configuration option if DHCP service is required to be installed locally: Open the PXE Configuration Utility, select the PXE Server tab, and for DHCP Server discovery select the No DHCP server installed on PXE server (Use DHCP port) option.
• The DHCP Server and the PXE Server were located on the same server, but one of them was moved to a different server. This would result in an incorrect PXE Server configuration. To resolve this issue, reinstall the PXE Server component of the Altiris Deployment Solution.
• The DHCP relay agent, either a Proxy DHCP Server or a switch configured with helper addresses, is not configured correctly. For example, if DHCP and PXE are on separate servers, the DHCP relay agent needs to have both addresses in its configuration. To resolve this issue, correct the DHCP relay agent configuration.
• If the Microsoft DHCP service is installed on the PXE server, but is disabled or unconfigured, Altiris PXE Setup configures PXE to work with the local DHCP service (even if the DHCP service is disabled). This causes the PXE server to not respond to PXE clients that get a DHCP address from DHCP services running elsewhere on the network. To resolve this issue, remove Microsoft DHCP services from the PXE server and reinstall the PXE Server component of the Altiris Deployment Solution.
• A firewall or network security software is enabled in the network environment.
Dell :: Weird 1710 Boot
Aug 19, 2007For some reason my laptop will occasionally not boot up when it is on battery (not connected to AC power source).
It's been doing this all today--I can't get it to boot without plugging it in.
If I try to boot with no AC power, it seems to start booting (I hear drives spin) but doesn't reach the BIOS screen (nothing on the display).
Now, if I put AC power in for only a second, boot, and remove it as soon as it gets to the BIOS loading screen, then there are no problems.

Oct 2, 2008i have this m1730 with the 8800m GTX SLI and im currently running the 179.13 drivers for it and im having this weird issue(had it with all the drivers i have had) ever since i got my samsung monitor ive either noticed it because of the a larger size or its come to arise that certain colors, especially bright yellows, when displayed cause a weird form of tearing that horizontally moves bands of pixels over to the left of where they sposed to be, i have tried many different drivers and the problem still exists, this even still happens in games with vsync enabled.

Oct 27, 2009I notice that when I have SLI turned off, there is a stutter effect when maximizing and minimizing windows - this was occurring both in the Vista pre-installed as well as the Windows 7 x64 currently installed. When running SLI, no such issues occur.
As I want to disable SLI to avoid the excessive fan noise and save on battery life (I don't ever play videogames, and this was sent as a replacement), I want to figure out why this is happening.
1. What could be the cause of this? I can't imagine that a single 8700m GT isn't capable of smoothly rendering window max and minimization.
2. Would a forceware driver be better than the stock Dell drivers? If so, can someone recommend the latest, well-liked and stable forceware driver for Windows 7 x64? I know that some are better than others but navigating laptopvideo2go.com is a bit confusing for me.
Dell :: Weird Performance In Vista On M1710
Sep 24, 2007My m1710 is still very new, and has some performance issues doing the simple standard desktop stuff. I have never had these issues on any other computer and they can be very annoying. The first is that firefox takes about a minuet to open, and that can be very frustrating. The second is that windows media player takes 10-15 seconds to switch songs. There are a lot of similar issues relating to slow performance on the desktop, but when it gets to games, game performance is just as it should be. All of these issues are consistent, and I'm wondering if vista isnt prefetching correctly? I have already formated and installed just the stuff I need.

Mar 21, 2009Alright the other day while surfing the net i noticed a strange noise coming from my laptop and I really didn't think of anything.
So anyway just 5 minutes ago while doing the same usual things like surfing the net, the same noise came out again. Just once, and it sounded something like this, DEEENGGG......
(i really don't know how to explain it) this sound appeared while my volume is muted. Anyway I know it's not the hard drive noise so i am a little worried but more so confused. I'm thinking is this an indicator that maybe the temperature of my laptop is hot that causes that sound

Dec 30, 2009I enabled the Intel Virtualization Technology on the work laptop studio 13. Ever since then, the laptop has been constantly hanging (not always) off the Dell or Windows bootscreen.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. I need this to run the XP mode.
Does this happen to anyone else? I contacted Dell today and was informed that it could be caused by a faulty motherboard. I wasn't entirely convinced because the laptop is still fairy new.
Dell :: Weird XPS 1340 Headphone Noise
Nov 30, 2009I've noticed (yet another) strange problem with my XPS 1340. I'll be listening to audio through headphones (only noticed it when iTunes was open - not always playing though) when every few hours or so,
a mid-pitched honking / buzzing noise, at most a couple seconds in duration, will sound. I've only had the laptop a couple weeks or so, and it's happened maybe a half dozen times so far.
I've never heard the noise coming from the speakers, only the headphones plugged into the front jacks
