View 10 RepliesIf you press the power button, you can hear the hard drive starting to spin up, then it acts as if the power was just cut from it and it dies.
I am assuming something on the motherboard is just broken, just figured I would ask to see if anyone else has any other ideas.
I have a 1 year old Inspiron 5050 that does not boot.
It's completely dead With the battery in. No led on front. When I remove the battery and power up it starts to boot , shows the dell screen , beeps once then dies.
I have to remove the power cord to get it to reboot and it does the same again , one beep then nothing.
I bought this laptop 1 week ago. When I was in battery mode the laptop was dying at 60%.
Returned it to the store and got a new one.
One month after my warranty expires, my 12 cell dv5t battery stops dead in its tracks. No warning, no nothing! (Was working fine up until it died, and hadn't even lost much usage time, considering its been used fairly much.) And I have a 3 year extended warranty, that, of course, doesn't cover the battery!
But there's a tiny bit of good news. . . I learned a very good tip ---I didn't know, until I was on the phone with the HP sales guy spending $160 for a new one (double grr) that you can still use your laptop with a dead battery, if you take the battery out! I thought there was no way to use my laptop, and now I can, so at least I won't lose valuable computing time while I'm waiting for UPS. Small consolation, but I HATE it when I don't have access to my computer!
I have a G72 with the Radeon 5470 gpu. Â 2 days ago my wife received a bluescreen on Windows 7x64 stating that the video driver had stopped working. Â From that point on the G72 would not make it to the desktop without the screen going dead. Â The machine boots to safemode fine. Â I tried as much as I could think of to resolve this issue but eventually backed off her data and restored to factory. Â The problem persisted and I ended up disabling the ATI card in the control panel. Â The machine seemed to be working after that.
I begin the long process of brining the OS up to current. Â About 2 sets of updates after Win 7 SP1 the problem came back. Â I booted to safe mode and checked the driver and discovered that it had been re-enabled. Â I have tried disabling it again and rebooting. Â Sometimes it stays disabled thru reboot but sometimes it does not. Â At this point the machine will go to a dark screen (not just black video but dead) after I sign on. Â This was happening without regard to the enable or disable status on the ATI card.
Â
So... Â I attempted to do another rehang of the OS and got about half way thru. Â Windows setup now tries to reboot and after the machine comes up, the screen goes dead. Is there a way to disable the card in bios? Â Can the card be physically removed?
I have replaced my laptop battery and the icon now indicates 100% available but plugged in charging. On removing the power lead the laptop immediately dies.Should I have done something about callibration when installing the battery?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn my HP Envy M4-1015dx laptop, I was editing a large image file in Photoshop, likely using a large amount of the scratch disk. In the background I had another Adobe program running though I had not engaged the application in the couple hours prior. Google Chrome web browser was also open in the background, with admittedly a lot of tabs open. So, the load on the computer/processor? was definitely heavy.Â
Â
At this point, the battery died and the computer subsequently shut down. I plugged in a power source shortly after, and pressed the power button to turn the laptop on. The laptop booted and went to the welcome screen, I entered my password and the laptop got stuck on the "Welcome" screen that loads prior to opening to the desktop.Â
Â
I pressed the power button to turn off the laptop and again to turn it on. At this point everything loaded extremely slowly. The screen where I enter the password moved extremely slow, taking at least 5 - 10 minutes to accept my keypresses and start loading the desktop.Â
Â
Using any other application did not work, they became unresponsive. Attempting a system restore took over 30 minutes just to set a restore point and "prepare" the computer for a system restore. I was never able to complete a restore, I got an error during the preparation process.Â
It seems like the processor is just overloaded with even the smallest tasks now.
I purchased my laptop about two years ago. A few days ago, the screen suddenly dies, and on boot, it flickers a few times with the proper display, but then goes blank. The backlight seems to remain on though. When I use an external monitor with the HDMI port, the external monitor works fine, however the laptop screen remains blank. Here's a video of what it looks like when I first boot the laptop: [URL] .....
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe price of 2nd user Latitude D630's seems to be holding up quite well in the UK. Does this indicate that it is still a popular machine and favoured over the E6400?
I briefly checked out an E6400 the other day and for a choice between machines of approximately similar spec I would opt for the D630 rather than the newer E6400.
I would be interested in opinions from users who have experience with both models.
We are looking at getting some Latitude E4310 systems. Since fast boot up to access the web is important, we see that the Latitude On FLASH option is required.
The downside is that Dell will not install this along with the WiMax card option. They have a combo WiFi and WiMax card, but it can not be installed with the FLASH option.
They also list Latitude On ECM as an option instead of On FLASH. The ECM runs $149 more. With ECM, the system can then have the WiMax card which would be nice.
The people at Dell have not been able to provide a good explanation on what the ECM option does. There is a write up on the FLASH option, but not a good one on ECM. Does anyone know what the ECM does differently than the FLASH?
Key points of the FLASH option are (we need these functions):
Boot Fast, 8-10 seconds
Wi-Fi and LAN 10/100/1000
Web access via browser Firefox Browser
Supports Java and Adobe Flash
Read Microsoft Office
Edit Microsoft Office 2000
I've got a choice at the moment between two latitudes:
1) Dell Latitude D630: 2.2ghz C2D, 3Gb RAM, 120gb HDD, dvd/cdrw drive, vista, nvidia Quaddro GFX
2) Dell Latitude E6500: 2.26ghz C2D, 3Gb RAM, 80gb HDD, DVDRW, Vista,
Which do you reckon i ought to go for between the two?
The laptop will be used primarily between home and university, so will be taken between the two places in my shoulder messenger bag, so will probably take a few bumps
I am wondering whether or not the E6400 has the Latitude-On feature or can be configured as such.
View 10 Replies View RelatedPicked up the new 6400 about 3 weeks ago and although everything seems to be running well,
It will start and just run forever.
Sometimes, it starts up in sleep mode and just spins for hours.
i have an old latitude cpt with a 600mhz cpu and was wondering is it possible to upgrade the cpu?
View 5 Replies View Relatedi turn it on and it goes to blue screen for a second then goes into black and says if your computer shut down try starting from normal????
I guess the hd maybe is gone .I also have a thinkpad and it has recovery. does dell have it
I bought this the other day for my Latitude XT:
http://www.amazon.com/32GB-1-8-inch-...4&sr=8-2-fkmr0
Wanted to replace the 4200rpm hard drive currently in there with something faster. I updated the BIOS to A09 (January 2010) to prevent any compatibility issues. I plugged it in and booted the computer, popped my Windows CD in, goes through the pre-load stuff. When it gets to the part about setting up (prior to where it asks about formatting and all that) I get a BSOD.
Sorry for the brief description but I'm trying to work on it while I type. Any suggestions? Do I have it plugged in incorrectly? What should I be looking for?
EDIT: I checked for the hard drive in the BIOS. There's not many options to see what HDD is detected. However, when my 80GB drive is connected it shows "80 GB drive". When I have the SSD plugged in nothing shows up in the BIOS for it. Does this mean the SSD is not compatible with my machine?
EDIT2: Forgot to mention their website claims it's compatible with my laptop:
http://www.activemp.com/SSD/18-IDE-P...SD-upgrade.htm
EDIT3: I sent them a "polite" e-mail about my situation and will let you all know if I have any success.
I'm pretty new to Dell notebook world. I was always told that Dell has a stinky customer service and their image wasn't that good around spot but care sharing whats good and bad about dell in general?
1- In the LCD option, it says touchscreen. Does that mean I can somewhat use this laptop like a tablet? ( Without the ability to twist the screen of course..)
2-Never knew whtas the different between 1dimms and 2dimms in RAM....
3-Compare Geforce 9400gs with the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD With PC-Card. Plus, what do they mean by "PC-Card" or "EXpress card" ?
4-Does Dell notebook actually give us 64bits windows or they're all 32bits unless they mention the option of 64bits?
5-Whats the difference between the normal e6400 model and the ATG model? Simply more durability +weight?
6- Whats an encrypted HDD or a ruggedized HDD?
7- I'll be using the notebook for design purpose. Such as photoshop, flash, illustrator or such. I'll be using 2-3 program at once with several picture/projet +internet + music. If my specs are 2.26ghz or 2.4ghz + 4gb ram + intel HD4500HD, will this notebook handle it?.............................
The laptop runs great, but now as it gets later in the night, things begin to quiet down.
As I sit here in front of the tablet in complete silence, there is a constant buzzing(kinda high pitched, you can't hear it over the fan when it's on) noise coming from what seems to be right under the touchpad, which is where the harddrive is located. Could it be the harddrive?
Any thoughts? And also, is there anyway to test this seeing as how I don't have another 1.8" drive to swap out with?
(I hope it's the HDD, seeing as how i plan to get an SSD soon)
trying to control the fan speed. I've tried i8kfangui31 but still no luck. Then I run the diagnostic software from Dell Support website, the result of the processor on/off test is error code 3700:011B -> my fan failed to slow down to 2500rpm. the fan keeps running at high speed (about 4500rpm). my bios is A10.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI got this laptop second handed. At the time I got this laptop, there are 2 problems.
The first is, the 2 back USB port is gone, leaving only a hole at the body. I dont really got problem with this because I still got 2 side USB port.................................................
I need to select a new laptop for work. My company allows Dell only.
Currently, I have a Dell Latitude D610. (yes time to upgrade).
I travel often. Therefore, weight is a factor. I'm not sure if I should go with the 14" or 15" screen. My current 14" seems OK. I need a laptop where I can use a port replicator. I believe that this limits my choices. Some of the models I like from a design standpoint don't seem to offer this.
So, I ended up with:
Latitude E6400
Latitude E6500
Latitude E5500
Latitude E5400
I couldn't really figure out what the difference is between the E5x and E6x.
general differences b/w the two Dell business models? I'm looking to buy a 15" notebook, and I think the business computers may be better than the consumer ones. However, I'm having trouble understanding the different models' differences b/w each other on Dell's website.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to get a laptop for college (i'll be starting in the fall). My intended major(s) are either: Biological Sciences/Biology, Spanish, or Business.
I want to go into Medicine. I'm not sure what kind of laptop I want, or what the best buy would be. I've grown up on Dell and have had one my whole life, I've never had a mac. Up until my good friend recently purchased a mac, I never really even considered one - but he loves his and it makes me want to get one as well. I'm not so sure as to what I'll be doing on the laptop other than the misc. school work.
Video Editing and graphics design interest me, but its nothing I'm going to be doing professionally, but it would be cool to mess around with. I talked to a guy at the apple store today and he said that if I was looking to do any big-time graphics and video editing that a macbook is not a good choice, due to the video card. What are some pros and cons of each (Dell Latitude v. Macbook)? Would a macbook be good for graphics and video editing?
Its a certified refurb; it has everything i want at a great price:
-- Latitude E6400 Laptop: Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 (2.53GHz, 6M L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
-- 14.1 inch UltraSharp WXGA+ (1440x900) LED Display
-- Back-lit Keyboard
-- Genuine Windows Vista Business
-- Brushed Metal Black
-- 24X CD RW/DVD Combo Drive
-- 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz (1 DIMMs)
-- 90W AC Adapter
-- 9 Cell Primary Battery
-- 125V Power Cord
-- Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD With Express Card
-- 250 GB Free Fall Sensor Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
-- Dell Wireless 1510 802.11a/g/n Draft Mini Card
-- Integrated Webcam with digital microphone
Im upgrading the RAM to 4gb, and maybe the hard drive if its too loud. I got the integrated GPU on purpose so it runs cooler and quieter and has better battery life (I don't play games). Ill try for a new version of vista too. Im happy i got the p9500, that was probably the only one left that was a decent price,
Going to purchase an E6500 and am wondering which OS to go with. This laptop will need to play well with the other machines on our home intranet in terms of file/printer sharing and such. Two of these machines have vista home and two with xp home.
The options are:
vista home basic - included in price
vista business - +$50
1. What are main differences between vista home and vista business?
2. Are both the vista home and vista business 64 bit? If not, how important is the whole 32 bit, 64 bit deal?
In addition, some clarification on the warranty options would be appreciated. I did read the description but am still a little confused.
The options are:
3 year limited + 3 year mail in - included in price
So this means 3 year warranty total, possibly no understandable English speaking phone support, and you must mail in the machine for repair .....
Based on this post[url] it would appear the Media bay only allows for 1.8" hard disks!
Is this true? Can anyone confirm this is true for both models?
2xHDD is a must for me - running VMs on a single disk is a _real_ drag!
Today I found on Dell's support page there's a new firmware and application with title "Latitude On Flash".
I have E4300 with Latitude On capable but I never used it at all.
So I thought this might be the thing that makes the Latitute On something usable.
But my installation process fails with message saying there's no flash device (module?) found on my laptop
Just purchased a dell latitude e5400, have a few questions though
Specs:
Dell Latitude e5400
14.1" LED Display
Core 2 Duo p8700
2GB DDR2 800 1 dimm
Nvidia 9200m w/256m
160gb 5400rpm drive
Intel wireless N
dvd drive
I have been on these forums complaining about various issues with my Latitude 6400 for about four months now. I am on my second Latitude; the first I gave back after one month in October of 2008 b/c of the relentless fan.
This one has the following specs:
-Dual Core T9400
-Nvidia 160 GPU
-4gbs of ram
-Seagate 250gb-hd at 7200rpm
-Vista Business
*the above sits in a E-port replicator/dock with two external drives roughly 75% of the time.
So heres the problem: aside from a relentless fan that never seems to turn off (which I have just resigned to), I have a serious CPU dilemma. For some reason, at odd intervals during the day, it will jump up to 50-60-% and stay there. It actually idles at about 25%. Mind you, I use ONLY Outlook, Itunes, and internet access.
This CPU usage will steadily climb until it hits 100%, at which point I cant do anything but restart the computer.
Heres the strange part: when I look at my Task Manager in this situation, it seems that EVERYTHING is jumping around and contributing to the CPU usage. The usual, more active culprits are the Search Index and Filter and the "Host Processes". Also, various aspects of Symantec seems to bog things down as well. Whats weird is that if I end one of the processes, another random process will start to use the CPU percentage that I just shut down! It doesnt matter what I do, the computer will "find" a way to use up 100%! For example-today the "Search Filter and Index were using almost 60% of my CPU so I shut the whole Index down. My computer ran at about 5-10% for an hour and then magically found other stuff to bog it down. By the end of the day, I was back up to 75% usage again...
