Dell :: M1330 Powers On For A Second Then Just Dies, Any Ideas?
Nov 22, 2009
If you press the power button, you can hear the hard drive starting to spin up, then it acts as if the power was just cut from it and it dies.
I am assuming something on the motherboard is just broken, just figured I would ask to see if anyone else has any other ideas.

I've recently replaced a 3/4 year old dell and would like some ideas on what to do with it...
It's not that bad a system, just don't know what to do with it right now. I've given it a fresh format and everything is running fine (other than the battery which doesn't work any more, but easily replaceable).
Specs -
Dell Inspiron 6000
Intel Pentium M 1.86
1024MB RAM
60GB Hard Drive
Mobility Radeon x300 128MB (1680 x 1050)
Windows XP Pro
plus all the basics .....

I have a 3+ yr old D620 that I have been really happy with. It is starting to show its wear and tear a bit,
I have lugged this thing everywhere on a daily basis. So, looking at the current Dell lineup, there doesn't seem to be anything that strikes me as a similar model.
Here is what I particularly like about it - and what I'd require in a new one:
1) Pretty durable solid build, including the way the screen locks pretty much in place - i.e. doesn't feel flimsy.

I enabled the Intel Virtualization Technology on the work laptop studio 13. Ever since then, the laptop has been constantly hanging (not always) off the Dell or Windows bootscreen.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. I need this to run the XP mode.
Does this happen to anyone else? I contacted Dell today and was informed that it could be caused by a faulty motherboard. I wasn't entirely convinced because the laptop is still fairy new.

I'm having a few problems with the web cam software in my Dell Vostro 1700 laptop.
When I run the web cam manager it displays video fine, but as soon as I start to record video it crashes, saying livecam.exe has stopped working.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it's still no good.
Any ideas? I've not used it for quite some time, so don't know how long it's been like it. Alternatively, are there any other good free apps that let you eaily record video on a web cam?
I also have Skype and MSN Messenger installed, but wouldn't have thougt they'd have done the damage (as it's only when I try to record that it crashes).

One month after my warranty expires, my 12 cell dv5t battery stops dead in its tracks. No warning, no nothing! (Was working fine up until it died, and hadn't even lost much usage time, considering its been used fairly much.) And I have a 3 year extended warranty, that, of course, doesn't cover the battery!
But there's a tiny bit of good news. . . I learned a very good tip ---I didn't know, until I was on the phone with the HP sales guy spending $160 for a new one (double grr) that you can still use your laptop with a dead battery, if you take the battery out! I thought there was no way to use my laptop, and now I can, so at least I won't lose valuable computing time while I'm waiting for UPS. Small consolation, but I HATE it when I don't have access to my computer!

I have a G72 with the Radeon 5470 gpu. Â 2 days ago my wife received a bluescreen on Windows 7x64 stating that the video driver had stopped working. Â From that point on the G72 would not make it to the desktop without the screen going dead. Â The machine boots to safemode fine. Â I tried as much as I could think of to resolve this issue but eventually backed off her data and restored to factory. Â The problem persisted and I ended up disabling the ATI card in the control panel. Â The machine seemed to be working after that.
I begin the long process of brining the OS up to current. Â About 2 sets of updates after Win 7 SP1 the problem came back. Â I booted to safe mode and checked the driver and discovered that it had been re-enabled. Â I have tried disabling it again and rebooting. Â Sometimes it stays disabled thru reboot but sometimes it does not. Â At this point the machine will go to a dark screen (not just black video but dead) after I sign on. Â This was happening without regard to the enable or disable status on the ATI card.
Â
So... Â I attempted to do another rehang of the OS and got about half way thru. Â Windows setup now tries to reboot and after the machine comes up, the screen goes dead. Is there a way to disable the card in bios? Â Can the card be physically removed?

On my HP Envy M4-1015dx laptop, I was editing a large image file in Photoshop, likely using a large amount of the scratch disk. In the background I had another Adobe program running though I had not engaged the application in the couple hours prior. Google Chrome web browser was also open in the background, with admittedly a lot of tabs open. So, the load on the computer/processor? was definitely heavy.Â
Â
At this point, the battery died and the computer subsequently shut down. I plugged in a power source shortly after, and pressed the power button to turn the laptop on. The laptop booted and went to the welcome screen, I entered my password and the laptop got stuck on the "Welcome" screen that loads prior to opening to the desktop.Â
Â
I pressed the power button to turn off the laptop and again to turn it on. At this point everything loaded extremely slowly. The screen where I enter the password moved extremely slow, taking at least 5 - 10 minutes to accept my keypresses and start loading the desktop.Â
Â
Using any other application did not work, they became unresponsive. Attempting a system restore took over 30 minutes just to set a restore point and "prepare" the computer for a system restore. I was never able to complete a restore, I got an error during the preparation process.Â
It seems like the processor is just overloaded with even the smallest tasks now.

I purchased my laptop about two years ago. A few days ago, the screen suddenly dies, and on boot, it flickers a few times with the proper display, but then goes blank. The backlight seems to remain on though. When I use an external monitor with the HDMI port, the external monitor works fine, however the laptop screen remains blank. Here's a video of what it looks like when I first boot the laptop: [URL] .....

Just started doing it today, I havent had any other problems. I have checked all the power settings and I don;t see anything that should be causing it to shutoff, and I dont receive any Windows errors upon booting it back up.
Any ideas?
ill more then likely call Dell and have them look at its but I wanted to getr some other opinions first.
I was in the middle of A game of WoW when it happened.

Everything was fine, then when I would plug in a USB peripheral into a USB port, it shuts down. I tried it several times and now the laptop will not turn on at all. I have searched on google but there is not an issue like mine. Unlike others I do not even get lights or any hard drive noises. Is the motherboard fried?

I am operating a Dell Inspiron 3520 and have been having trouble with the machine powering down and becoming unresponsive with screen tilt (not closure). The computer appears to be functioning normally until I tilt the screen forward, at which time the screen goes black and all lights indicating power turn off, as if the machine has powered down. I cannot make the machine power on again for some time until I have taken the battery out, put it back, and pressed the power button several times. This problem has occurred more frequently in recent days and I currently cannot turn the machine on to troubleshoot.
My fear is a dysfunction in the sleep trigger within the screen/lid closure system.

Dell Latitude D630.... I bought a new battery about 2 months back (had the old one for a good 6 years before it finally bit the dust) and I've had no problems with it. The test button still shows all 5 bright and green. I recently replaced my adapter because it was getting old (almost 3 years) and it stopped charging since part of it's wires were frayed. The new adapter is not charging my computer.Â
It's Dell made so it shouldn't have a problem with the no-charge chip put in and it's New, not refurbished. I've tried different outlets, restarting computer, updating BIOS, checking battery, and lots of fun stuff in between.
I'm at a loss of what to do because without it charging it, I may as well have just stuck to my old one and saved the money. I'd rather have this issue fixed than never use my battery ever.

As soon as i power on the laptop (INSPIRON 1300), the screen blinks and goes blank.
On several attempts of troubleshooting, nothing resolved.
On pressing Function+CRT/LCD, the screen is white and no other signs.
there are no beep sounds heard during the start-up process and no logos appear.

a friend of mine gave me their Acer 1350 laptop to repair - the fault was that the screen suddenly went blank, even though the power goes on and the fan turns. When I first looked at it, the screen came on, it started to boot into Windows (XP Home), it got past the loading screen (with the horizontal scrolling thingies) and then the screen went blank, and ever since I've never been able to get the screen to come on.
I tested it and couldn't hear the hard drive seeking, so I guessed that the mainboard or CPU had failed. I took it apart (using a service manual as a guide) to see if there was anything I could do to fix it, I removed the CPU and reseated it, used new thermal paste and put it all back together, but it still had the same problem. I had made sure that the screen cables were connected back correctly, as per the service manual instructions.
Also, the power light didn't come on, even though the CPU fan comes on when you press the power button (for a few seconds), and then after leaving it on for a few minutes the fan runs again for a few seconds, so something is working!
Anyway, I bought a second hand Acer 1350 off Ebay for £70, which was running fine, just didn't have the hard drive. As soon as I got it, I put the hard drive from my friend's Acer into the new laptop, and it booted up Windows fine, everything ran perfectly. Problem solved. Or so I thought.
After turning it off, I tried to turn it back on. Result - it now has exactly the same problem as the first laptop! When you press the power button, the fan goes on for a few seconds, but the screen remains blank. The hard drive doesn't seek.
I've also tried it without the hard drive, hoping that maybe that was something to do with it, but it makes no difference, the screen is still blank, so I can't even look at the BIOS.
I have been racking my brains over this - what could possibly have caused this problem in both laptops? Some kind of virus on the hard drive, which stops the laptop from even showing me the boot screen? The screen stays off no matter what I do. The power light doesn't come on, even though the fan has started turning, and the hard drive is running (but not seeking).

I bought my Studio 1555 laptop about 4 years ago. Recently it has been showing issues of automatic restarts and no booting. Initially the laptop was overheating and fan was running at very high speeds, so I figured it was a cooling issue - so cleaned up the area near the fan and put everything back in carefully. So now that problem is solved, but NO display issue still remains. The laptop power light switches ON, but I don't see any display in the monitor - so I ran the LCD BIST test - and turns out the LCD works just fine. I identified that the items below could be the issues. What I can do to rectify this issue. The system is out of warranty.
1. Connect to an external monitor - but this test would be redundant because we already know that the display is fine with the LCD BIST test.
2. Replace the video card or memory module
3. Replace the motherboard.Â
I read somewhere that taking out the BIOS battery and putting it back again solved the issue - but I can't understand the reason behind it.Â

I had assumed, but I want to make sure that my SZ6's problem is due to the Nvidia temp defect thing everyone's talking about.
Basically my computer is always very hot. Just downloaded SpeedFan and the GPU and both Cores are 78C and i've just been surfing the web for a few hours.
The problem happens when I play games (like Civ4 or Half-life 2) for a few hours or sometimes less if its a hot day. The laptop will abruptly power off as if I pulled the battery and power cord out.
When I reboot, I get that error message that says Windows did not shut down properly, do you want to reboot normally or in safe mode

I have had the W530 for several months now and it randomly powers off. Â This can occur when connected to the AC Adaptor, when running on battery, or when using the AC Adaptor without battery. Â Lenovo first replaced a fan, but that didn't solve. Â Now they are attempting to replace the system board.

I don't know what happened, but my laptop's not working.
I was using my laptop as a desktop computer (no battery) when I accidentally switched the switch off. After switching it on, I tried to turn on my laptop and the first thing I noticed was the blank screen. Then the power turned off, and then turned on again. The fan is working, but nothing else is. I don't hear or notice any processing, so I'm pretty sure nothing's working right except for the fan and the lights indicating that it's on.
I tried to reset the laptop by disconnecting it from power and then turning it back on after 30 seconds - but no luck.
I have an Extensa 4230 by the way.

I have HP Pavilion g6-2288sx Notebook PC. It has core i3 processor with 4gb ram.Â
Â
My problem is that my laptop suddenly powers off while running, not hibernating - total shutdown without any error or warning or anything. It just goes blank and dont turn on again until i connect it with its charger. Low battery is not the problem cause it doesnt give low battery error even battery sign shows that i have enough battery to work about next 30 mins.
