Dell :: M1710 Graphics Card Dead, Help

Oct 16, 2009

I was playing GRID on my Dell XPS M1710, and got a load of corruption and lines on the screen, and the laptop shut went into a kind of safe mode. It has never been overclocked, and dust has been cleaned recently.

Now, when I turn it on, I get artifacts and corruption even at the BIOS screen. I've tried reseating and reinstalling the drivers, but it hasn't worked. I'm going to call dell tomorrow, but as it's out of warranty,

I don't expect much help. There's no way I'm buying a new GPU, (they cost more than the laptop is worth), so I'm going to try and fix it. I'm going to use the oven fix as a last resort,

and would appreciate advice on anything else I can do to fix it, as well as any tips when performing the oven trick. If anyone is selling a 7900GTX/7950GTX for a decent price, you may have a buyer

Dell :: XPS M1710 Graphics Dead

Mar 16, 2009

The 7950GTX appears to have died on me, artifacts on boot up and black screen with drivers installed all the pointers of dead graphics card.

What options have I got I'm out of warranty and looks like I'm paying for new GPU if I ever want any graphincs out of this thing again.

I'd like to replace the 7950 gtx 512mb but its abit expensive (only looked on ebay) any other outlets for them? (I'm in the UK)

If I go for a different one 7900 7800, amI going to notice a massive difference?

Apple :: MBP - Graphics Card Dead - No Display

Jul 8, 2009

I think it was time for my 8600M GT to die as well... I restarted my 2007 MBP and no display came up on my monitor (connected to MBP). So, I restarted and tried again...no display. I proceeded with unplugging my monitor and restarting to see if anything came up on my MBP display; it remained black. I tried resetting PRAM three times and still, no display came up. I have lost my display before, but not after this many attempts on trying to "revive" it.

I guess I need to take it in to have the graphics card replaced as well as the Superdrive as it is spitting all CDs and DVDs out (mind you, they worked perfectly on another MBP). I have a password at the log-in screen. That shouldn't be a problem for the guys repairing my MBP, will it?

Dell :: Dead Screen Or Dead Video Card

Mar 29, 2008

I am at my wits end with my e1705. I had a sudden meltdown about 2 weeks ago... screen went scrambled, BSOD,etc...

Performed diagnostic, memory on video card came back as bad. Replaced with new card (from Dell), reinstalled OS, completely reinstalled nVidea drivers from Dell (Used driver cleaner too)...

Everything went smooth for a couple hours after this was completed yesterday (full diagnostic showed no errors), but after booting up today, after about 5 or 10 minutes of use screen freezes and turns either solid cyan or black... a small pattern of thin lines appears also.

Dell :: XPS M1710 Dead 7950 Support

Apr 14, 2009

My nVidia Geforce Go 7950 GTX burned out about a month ago and I have been running it in VGA mode here in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

Because I knew that Dell did not have support in this country I didn't contact support until last Friday, April 10, 2009. I had bought a full 4 year warranty when I bought the machine and the warranty expires in Sept 2011.

Dell agreed to replace the GPU under warranty, but said that they could only ship it to somewhere in the States, so I had them ship it to my office in Washington, D.C. and the package is now on its way to Dushanbe by DHL. I'll go inside and change the GPU myself, which, though, I'm not very handy with tools, I think I can do. I have the service manual and have reviewed the procedures and many of the very helpful posts on this site.

My question is that Dell Support is sending both the GPU and a new motherboard in case I need the latter. How do I know whether I need the latter, and should I just replace the motherboard even though the existing one seems to be running fine?

Dell shipped the parts to me on Sunday April 12 and they were received in my office in Washington on April 14. The invoice listed the total price for the GPU and motherboard at $1171.24, which apparently must be paid if I don't send the defective parts to them within 10 days.

Because I'm in Tajikistan Dell Support got a waiver of the 10 day deadline for return. I might just hang on to everything until I'm back in the States in October 2009.

Dell :: (M1710 With A 7950GTX Card) Card Was Overheating ...

Apr 5, 2008

I've been having problems with my video card. (M1710 with a 7950GTX card). The card was overheating and even after applying AS5 and cleaning the vents it was reaching around 100c in games. After about a year, i started to also get memory parity errors...

Long story short, i contacted dell and they mailed me a new mb and a new video card.

I just got it now, and i am going to open the rig and replace the video card.. I am just not sure about the mother board, should i replace it as well ?

The parts that dell sent are refurbished parts, and as i know that my m.board is working i am not sure whether i should replace it or not.

Dell :: XPS M1710 Graphics

Mar 27, 2009

I know that there are lots threads about various GPU related problems, but somehow I didn't find any information which i would be very interested in. So:

PROBLEM #1: I have dell m1710 (GPU: GeForce Go 7950 GTX; the last time i've cleansed dust lats time about four months ago) for 18 months. Its waranty is expired.

Some time ago, while playing a game which does not require lots of graphics power, the screen covered with color lines and squares (screenshots included). As I closed the program and looked at GPU temperature it was around 66. I've restarted my laptop and at first it didn't boot at all and all startup information and BIOS looked like written in some kind of hieroglyphs.

Now my laptop only boots on safe mode or normal mode but only if resolution is no more than 1280x800. But i think it won't last long until it won't work at all .....

Dell :: Dead Graphics E1705 Said They Have Fix?

Aug 23, 2009

I have twins and bought two E1705 about two years ago and have been very pleased with them. I had one start the graphics problems (will not boot to windows and has the vertical lines at POST) you have all heard about and after changing the motherboard twice and graphics three times within about six weeks Dell suggested a change out to a XPS 1640, 15 days later it showed up (brand new and no problems).
One week after we received the 1640 my other son's computer is doing the same thing. I asked Dell if we could skip the change outs and go with the 1640 but they did not go for that. I will be shipping the E1705 back to them this time instead of the technician coming to my home. My question is that Dell has a fix now that they did not have a month ago.
Anyone have any ideas what they think they will be doing? They can not change to a ATI 1400 to run cooler because that card stinks. They could change that the fans run all the time but that seems silly. I am hoping they change me to one with two pipes instead of one but I do not know if they will modify the case like some have done to add the 7950 cards. Anyone else had Dell do a repair in warranty in the last few weeks so I know what i am looking at? We really like the E1705 but need something that is reliable.

Dell :: XPS M1710 Can It Have Quadro Graphics

Mar 11, 2008

I have been out of high school for two years now and working as a waiter and I am still living with my parents. My dad told me to do something with my life or move out .

Anyway, I decided to go to ITT tech for digital entertainment and Game Design. I guess my dad was glad because he said that I could have his old XPS M1710. Well, my buddy is in school for game design and said that I have to have Quadro graphics for game design.

But, I can't find anything that says that there is such a thing as Quadro with a M1710.

My buddy has an Alienware notebook so he is no help with my Dell, but he swaers that M1710s can have the Quadro. I tried calling Dell and they said that M1710 don't come with Quadros.

Anyway, is there such a thing as Quadro M1710? If so how do I get it. Do you need a new motherboard or is a card and how much would it cost me. Right now my M1710 has a ATI x1400 video and from what I read won't help me at all in school.

Dell :: Is My Video Card Dead?

Nov 16, 2009

My laptop hasn't worked for about a month now and I'm at the end of my rope!

I used it fine in the morning before I went to work, shut it down properly, but then couldn't get the screen or LCD panel above the keyboard to even light up, let alone work when I got home that night.

At first I thought it was just the screen, except that an external monitor doesn't work and the LCD panel is gone as well, which worries me.

When I did all the "function + power" tests the screen lit up but unfortunately instead of displaying the wavey colours I just got a sort of creamy white on it and the LCD panel still did nothing. The audio tests worked fine and scared the hell out of me .....

Dell :: Dead Video Card - E1705

Feb 25, 2008

Alright, as you can see in my sig, I am the "lucky" owner of a GeForce 7800. I bought my E1705 RIGHT before the Core Duo 2 and 7900 GS wave, but I haven't had any real problems (besides the annoying overheating of the 7800, never caused a crash, just low FPS sometimes during gaming).

Well I went to check my laptop this morning, and after the Windows loading screen (during the Welcome screen) it would glitch and get all scrambled, then jam up.

So I went into safe mode, un-installed all the video drivers, rebooted and it worked fine. Went and downloaded the newest drivers possible from the Official Dell site just to make sure I wasn't using faulty drivers.

But halfway through the install the screen would glitch and what not, I had to go back into safe mode and uninstall the drivers again and it worked fine.

This laptop has no warranty or anything, so if it truly is that the video card finally died I guess my only option is to buy a 7900 GS or GTX?

Just looking for some opinions (I'd hate to buy a card and find out it was some other problem with the laptop, even though I'm not a fan of this 7800 ) to make sure this truly is a video card problem, and to see if anyone knows where I might find a GS/GTX for decent prices.

The problem:
-GS7900 crapped out in December. BSOD and color grid everywhere (looked like plaid)
-After reading here and elsewhere about the problem, figured it was a video card failure. Bought a refurbished 7900GTX from eBay and installed it (Feb/March). Works great ......

Dell :: E1705, Dead Video Card

Mar 4, 2008

The screen on my 1705 has recently become cranky... scrambled, alternating between being on/off, inevitably leading to a BlueSOD (with nv4_disp error message.) Managed to check/update video drivers, but computer is pretty much non-functioning now.

Only thing that I can think of is that video card overheated and fried. In hindsight, I realize that I had spent a couple hours watching 24 with the computer not a good surface to allow ventilation.

Any other opinions before a I spend a couple hundred bucks on a new card?

Dell :: The M1710 Video Card Ride Down

Mar 9, 2009

I've joined the legion of M1710 users that have had their video card crap out on them. Typical green lines and bars results in chat to XPS support to have 7900GS replaced. That lasted ~ 2 weeks. Dust cleaned out every month, on a cooler pad, etc. Screen goes black suddenly (not screen saver) and a reboot leads to green lines again. Another chat/phone call to Dell results in replacement motherboard AND 7950 GTX. Nice upgrade. So, how long should I expect this card to last? I've had no other issues and really do my best to keep everything clean and cool. And when this card goes (they all seem too?).... I should mention that I received the M1710 as a replacement for a E1705 that overheated, had parts replaced, and then needed to go to the depot to be "fixed," only to return un-repaired and with the wires to the wireless antenna cut inside the case.

Dell :: Replaced M170 With M1710 Video Card

Aug 28, 2007

They gave me a 7900GS instead of a 7950 GTX. I know some of you have had the same problem.

Everything else is fine, I could care less. But, I really feel that I should have gotten the GTX instead. Two Questions:

1) How minimal is the downgrade from 256mb 7800 GTX in my old M170 to a 256mb 7900GS? How big is the difference in the 7900GS vs the 7950GTX?

2) For those of you who have gotten this problem, how did you go about getting the card switched? Did they send a new system? I'd rather they just send the card and I'll swap it out myself.

The replacement was approved on the 8th, and I just got it today. Apparantly it's a new build, not a refurb. But I want the video card that's not a downgrade.
