Dell :: Penryn Minimum Core Temperature
Jul 13, 2009
It seems like the temperature readings from both cores of my P8400 on my Dell Latitude E6500 running Windows 7 RC have some sort of minimum built into them. The reported temperatures will never drop below 32 for Core 0, and 39 for Core 1. Even after I resume from suspend, when the CPU should be at room temperature, as soon as I boot up it's 39/32. Similarly, while temperatures above that on SpeedFan show normal fluctuations, like you expect from a CPU temperature reading, once it hits the floor, it just becomes a flat straight line.
I'm not sure if this is the sensors, the software, or what.

I had never thought too much about the temperature in my laptop averaging about 134F (57C), but after I upgraded my desktop to an E6700 and it was running at about 86F (30C), I figured I'd take a second look at my laptop

I was looking at the advanced power settings today and saw that while Plugged In on High Performance, the minimum processor power was set to 100%. Why is that? Shouldn't I keep it at 5% and the max at 100%?

I'm planning on buying a new laptop soon and have been going through some of the threads regarding the HDMI port and I am a bit confused.
I would like to be able to take a 1080p/5.1 BD or .mkv on my laptop and connect it to my AV receiver via HDMI which then outputs 1080p/5.1 to my HDTV/speakers. I have no idea what minimum video card/sound card/processor is required for this.

This notebook runs fans as soon as you start it, and it runs faster 5 minutes later even if it stays idle. The noise is too much. I don't care about performance, I just want it to run at minimum fan speed. I just need to be sure it won't melt. I don't see a setting in BIOS. What can I do? If I open it up and unplug the fans, will it melt or burn to destruction? Or how can I but a notebook cooler tray-thingy when the seller doesn't allow me to try and listen to the sound the thing makes?

Looks like the m1730 now carries 45nm Penryn processors: The base is now 2.4GHz T8300 and T9300 option is for ~$125 more. I wonder if the performance differences justify that extra $125.

When I "restart" my Y500 using windows 8.0, it takes a minimum of 15 minutes. Sometimes, if I have time to wait, it takes more than one hour.  90% of the time, I restart it using the on/off button. No problems at all using the button, but the software takes a VERY long time or won't restart at all--just the green screen with the word "restart."

I was wondering that since the socket for the processor in the M1730 is a socket P and thats the same socket the new Penryns will use, will it be possible to just drop one in like we were able to do so on the E1705 when Merom came out? The run at a much lower voltage and from this review [url] it would increase battery life and is more powerful to boot so it just sounds like a good idea.
Crap, looks like I messed up the topic for this thread.

In the US, the M1330 already has the LED backlit and the penryn for some time now. Yet the 1530 is just sitting there...
Other manufacturers have began offering newer GPUs than the 8600, but still nothing from dell on their 15.4".
They teased us with the addition of the 1530 under the "XPS Gaming Laptop" header, but its exactly the same as the regular one.

I know some folks have put a T9300 in their m1330, but the screenshots I've seen show the bios incorrectly detecting the CPU speed (A06 I believe). I want to know if the new A07 bios has corrected this issue, but I never saw any followup. Can anyone who has done this upgrade confirm/deny if A07 fixed the detection issue?

I bought the Acer 1410 with the single core SU3500 Core 2 Solo CPU. It looks like Acer decided to release them with the SU2300 now, which is dual core at 1.2GHz (compared with 1.4GHz of SU3500).
Does anyone have any benchmarks comparing the two, and/or if they have a solid understanding how much better it would perform compared with the SU3500? I also see that the single core AS1410 with Celeron M @ 1.3GHz sells at the same price as the dual core.

(UPDATES: DIY Bluetooth module guide added below)
upgrading my Aspire 5570 notebook more than a year ago. This time, I’m feeling lucky to share some of my experiences about how I finally upgraded my CPU from a Core Solo T1350Core 2 Duo T7200.
Again, thanks to everybody here in Notebookreview forum especially adinu, hoggie, Mack1982, TehSuigi, krazyphire and bigozone for their insights and knowledge that helps me a lot throughout the whole process. So, let’s get started!
Pre-upgrading
Please refer to these post before you start. It'll save you a lot of time and trouble later on.
Upgraded Acer 3680 Celeron CPU to a T5300!
Aspire 5315 CPU Step-by-Step Upgrade Guide
What you’ll need :Your new CPU (make sure it's compatible with your system ie; socket, FSB)Latest BIOS from Acer (upgraded to 1.3505 or latest)A good thermal paste (I would recommend Tuniq TX-2 or Arctic Silver 5 as well)Basic tools (screwdrivers, forceps, kitchen paper)Body static discharger (I would definitely recommend this as a precaution)Some alcohol, ear buds, sand paper grid 600,1200 & 2000 (optional for heat sink lapping)Lastly TIME and PATIENCE (you’ll be needing these a lot definitely!)When you’re ready, lets get our hands dirty.
How to disassemble your notebook?
I found out a very good video tutorial on how to disassemble my Aspire notebook on YouTube. So please take your time to view it and follow step by step as shown to help you to go through the process.
Lapping your heat sink (optional)
Although it’s not necessary, but I would recommend this process as another way to improve heat dissipation on your newly installed CPU. Refer to this page for detailed instructions.
The simple process:Clean your heat sink from old thermal paste residues with alcohol or equivalent of it using ear buds and kitchen papers.Apply a 600-grid sandpaper to smoothen the heat sink surface which comes into contact with your CPU.Repeat the process again with a 1200-gid sand paper until you’re satisfied. Finally, finish up by applying a 2000-grid sand paper to give you an almost mirror-finished surface. Wipe clean any dirt and residues left.....................................

I want to upgrade my old laptop to something nice, and am torn between to systems.
An HDX 16 with:
2.40 Ghz dual core duo ( P8600 chip )
6 gigs of ram
OR...
An HXD 18 with
2.0 Ghz QUAD core ( QX9000 chip )
4 gigs of ram
both systems have the same video card ( Nvidia with 512megs of ram ) 500 gig hard drive.
What would be the faster machine for doing video ? and what would be the overall faster machine ?
I realize that not all applications will take advantage of a quad-core chip like the QX900, so this is why I"m asking. if the dual-core P8600 chip @ 2.40 Ghz in the HP HDX 16 with that 6 gigs of ram will actually be faster overall than the quad core would be, and perhaps even be faster at rendering video ?

i got my santa rosa MBP not too long ago (i bought it second hand). i am extremely happy with the machine as it is a 2.4ghz c2d with 160g hdd at 5400rpm and 8600gt 256mg gpu. i know this has been discussed many times, so i have been reading about the multi touch trackpad and was a bit bummed that i didnt get the newer 2008 penryn model instead. 2 days ago i was thiking about replacing the SR MBP top case with a penryn MBP top case and have the multi touch, 4 finger gesture ability on my SR MBP. therefore i started googling to see of people have actually done conversions and worked..fortunately, i found a member on this forum and confirmed that it actually works...but unfortunately there was not guide for this operation. I would really want to hear from those that has performed such replacement operation and perhaps give me some tips and what i may need to watch out for. in addition to that, does anybody know of a guide for this replacement? would the penryn top case keyboard and trackpad connections fit the SR MBP? any modifications needed?

Aside from the fact thats free and all, my real concern if it will yield better gaming performance and battery life.

what the performance difference is between the Intel Core i7-620M and the . Intel Core i7-820QM. I always thought the quad core 820QM was faster, but on the hp website the dual core 620M is more expensive.
Is the 620M faster? And is it faster for specific things only?

My current CPU temp is around 61 degrees C with the CPU load @ 100%. I clean it petty often and I just recently (around 2 months ago) applied silver compound to the heatsink. Even though the fan is on, how come it will not go faster than "slow"? I can set it to high, but why doesn't it do it automatically? Is this normal for my 9300?

Basically I've been messing around with the OCing of my CPU since I've finally got all my temperature issues sorted. Firstly, I notice that my CPU temps at times are erratic, jumping/falling up to 10C at a time. Is this normal?
Secondly, my CPU temps after a short gaming session were
CPU1: 66C/ CPU2: 80C
This seems a bit strange to me. Does anyone know why CPU2 might be so much warmer?
Thirdly, related to the above, is 80C @ 3.4GHz good, bad or average? If I was running at 80C for hours can I expect this to do any damage? I know the CPU can handle up to 105C, however that doesn't mean something below can't cause damage. Confirmation on this would be great :-)
