Dell :: Playing Bluray Movies
Feb 4, 2009I got this blue ray documentary in x264 .mkv format, I tried playing it with VLC,
it freezes to death. Also it it because of the 8600M GT card? Any other options?

I have a HP 2510p with the u7700 at 1.33 and X3100 video card. I have downloaded some HD movies from the internet, I play them all with VLC media player. My laptop has the 120gb 5400rpm hard drive that came with it, most other 2510P's have the 4200rpm drive model. I play the HD movies from the hard drive.
Well my problem is that the HD movie (in 720HD) doesn't play too well on my laptop. Some movies skip alot, they seem to be waiting to load or something like that. I play other movies (around 700-800mb) and it does not do that.
Do current and past 2510p owners ever have this problem with playing HD movies. Is the X3100 video card powerful enough to play 720HD movies or could it just be a driver issue.
Maybe I can upgrade the X3100 drivers, I keep hearing stories about intel drivers.
I have just received today my new Studio XPS M1640 laptop (with blue ray drive and led screen) and so far all seems to be good except ... It can't play Blue-Ray movies. When I insert a BD disk, the autoplay only gives me the option to explore the folders with explorer. No option to play the disk. If I right click on the drive, I can select powerdvd but once in powerdvd nothing happens.
Notes:
1) I can see the folders on the BD disk in explorer
2) I tried it with the version of powerdvd dx that came with the laptop and also used the online update option of powerdvd dx to get the latest version (8.1). No change.
3) I'm trying to play to the built-in screen, no external monitor connected.
4) I've read somewhere about a blue-ray icon in powerdvd, I don't see this.
5) A long call with Dell support yielded nothing. I specifically asked if they might have shipped the wrong version (non-blue ray of powerdvd), the tech said that they only have the one version and that it has been tested to play BD disks properly.
6) Dell support says to try with other BD disks and if it still doesn't work to return the computer to have it fixed. (I don't really want to do that since it seems to be a software problem).
7) I ran the Cyberlink Blue Ray advisor and it tells me that all is fine except that it doesn't detect a blue ray software player.
Anybody else ran into this? Any solutions?
It would seem a bit strange to have to pay extra for a blue ray movie player on a brand new laptop that included a blue ray drive.
i finally got my instant-on media player working on my laptop but it will not play mkv files or bluray discs. this is the main reason for using the software.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI bought new Dell E4300 with 7200 rpm harddisk. Notebook is nice except one problem I have - every 2 seconds or more (this differes a lot on resources usage) movies or music stops playing for a very short time ... simply said playing isn't smooth.
I think it could be a HDD problem so I run HDTune benchmark.
Here is the result ... while I didn't make 15 posts I can't post a link (!@#$@$@#) anyway I think the result shouldn't look like this:
[url]
Almost in every low point of the graph the video or music stopped playing for a very short time (300-600ms) and that is very annoying.
I think it could be a hdd problem or maybe CPU problem that affects the hdd results as well, because the mouse pointer also stops moving for a while.
Instead of my originally oredered 1080p RG+B LED, Dell sent me 900p which has max res 1600x900. For everyday work seems OK, since anything higher than that would make icons and everything else to small.
But the question is about DVD movies - if I had gotten 1080p would movies/DVD look better on such display? I don't have HD or Blue Ray drive.
If I hook up Studio 17 via HDMI to a large screen TV (46" LCD), I do get 1080p since the graphics card ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 4650 1GB that is built in supports higher res than my Studio 17 monitor.
I'm thinking about returning this laptop, but really not sure what to do about this display. I got a great configuration and the laptop is otherwise really nice. It really comes down only to viewing movies and whether I would get visibly better picture with a better monitor? If so, what are my alternatives? SONY Vaio? Mac?
I am buying a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Intel core 2 P8700 processor rated at 2.53GHZ with 3MB of L2 cache, 4GB DDR2 800MHZ ram, 500GB hard drive rated at 5200RPM, ATI 4330 Radeon HD video card with 256MB of VRAM, and Sound blaster software enabled AUDIO Card.
Also, there are some other stuff like Bluetooth and bluray drive etc etc. It all comes with WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM WITH 64BIT. It has intel GM45 chipset which supports 1066 FSB and it also supports ddr 2 and ddr3....can i upgrade to ddr3 late on since intel states that it supports both? http://www.intel.com/products/notebo...5-overview.htm
Now the question, i m NOT going to play any GAMES on this laptop but i would watch alot of 1080P movies or u could say i would watch bluray movies. Is this laptop going to be sufficient enough to handle all high resolution videos? including YouTube's 1080P videos?....
AGAIN, i m not playing any GAMES on it....should i get this laptop or should i get studio 1558? since i m not playing any games, do u think i m jus gonna waste more money on studio
I want to buy a BD drive for my dell laptop not sure which one to go for?

Even the windows equalizer only shows the sound being played at quarter volume when the volume is maxed out.
I know the speakers on the E6400 arn't great but if I play mp3s or videos in WMP it is much much louder
I just got through watching Welcome to Macintosh and Macheads.
Personally I preferred Welcome to Macintosh, it felt a tad bit more solid than Macheads, felt more as a 360 experience, because it actually had a okey reasoning for the film. Macheads, was both funny and annoying at times, and it felt like the movie is glamorizing fanatical behavior. Jeez... its just material products, great ones of course, but they're products.
Is it just me or was Guy Kawasaki seriously off the charts annoying in Welcome to Macintosh?
And then we have that crazy fanatical nerd girl in Machead whom just looked like she was off the reserves mentally.
My favourite mac-centric movie has to be Pirates of Silicon Valley. I remember a couple of years back, when seeing it for the first time, I was blown away. It was such an nostalgic movie, even though I wasn't even born back then, haha, but I had reach so much about the history of the it industry so I was really fascinated with the story, and they simply outdid themselves portraying this story, in my opinion. The acting performances of the ensemble was put simply; great. Later on I found out that the movie was a TV movie, and I just couldn't believe it. Is it just me or did you also get the impression that this was a cinematic movie? I recently watched the DVD, and Noah Wyle was talking of maybe a sequel in the future. Here's to hoping that gets made.
I have XPS 1530 (red). I had made some changes to NVidia settings (video settings) and was able to view the movies full screen.
But after some days its not working. I checked the changes i made; its still the same, but movies are not viewed full screen.
I have a Studio with the ATI 3450 with the T5750 and I was wondering if it would be able to handle movies at that quality.

Before I started clean installing, I wanted to make sure from you guys that the notebook is capable of playing blueray movies without using MediaSmart software. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been hearing that the read/playback performance of the bluray drive on this laptop is terrible. Some say that it stutters all the way through an entire movie and it is very loud. Is this true? My second question is about the $375 charge for upgrading from 4GB RAM to 8GB RAM. Is it overpriced? Also, how easy is it to upgrade the RAM on the XPS 16?

Does it exist?
And to those with experience with the XPS16 and the XPS13, is the added size and weight of the 16 noticeable?
Was looking at Panasonic UJ-225B as a blu-ray writer drive for an upgrade of the DVD writer in my xps m1710. It is a slot loading drive and runs at x2 BD-R writing speeds.
Ridiculously expensive at the moment here in the UK (£325+VAT), so I have to be sure that it would fit/work OK in the Dell notebook before I shell out for it.
Has anyone got this drive fitted in the xps m1710?
I bought my M1530 a year ago with the DVD/CD drive... and I would like to change the DVD for an BluRay drive... but READ only... is that possible ?; I know about the BD Burner one but it's too expensive for me...
I would like to pay around 200$ only not 500$ lol, I don't need a burner right now... the blank BD are still too expensive.
Could I take 1 BluRay slot drive on eBay (or order 1 somehow at Dell ?) and put it in ?
planning to buy a laptop for all kind of purposes: watching movies, converting them to dvd, play games, surf internet, use word etc.

Also can someone please confirm if this laptop includes: VGA output for RS232cable, firewire, and svideo. Also would i be able to attach my external desktop speakers or not ? i am also very confuse about the battery like not sure which one to get like 9 or 6 cell ..cuz i heard that 9 cell would be very heavy compare to 6 and weird shape? Lastly is the grainy screen problem still around like i have to tell the representative for LG screen or not ?

This might sound a bit trivial but could somebody clarify Dell's Bluray option to me pls:
Fixed Internal Blu-ray Disc (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) Slot Drive including SW
Obviously it reads and writes dvds both + and -; read bluray discs only but not write...
I have two xp latpops, m1330 and m1530. I'm just wondering if It's possible to exchange the blu-ray drive between the two (from m1530 to m1330).
