Dell :: Pointing Stick Mark On The Screen

View 10 RepliesWhen I put my X220T in tablet mode, the screen moves just enough to move the pointing stick in the middle of the keyboard to cause the cursor to move. I can't rest my hand on the screen without causing the cursor to move all the way accross the screen.
Am I missing a driver that would disable the nub when the screen is turned over it, or is this a design oversight? I've got the latest BIOS.
I'm after a new laptop, was about to get a Dell Studio 15" when I realised it doesn't have a track stick/pointing stick. I am very attached to my track stick on current laptop.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm hunting for some elusive pointstick covers for several D-series latitudes. Specifically, the broad,
flat caps that have about two dozen tiny rubber bumps on them. NOT the narrower, domed, classic "cat tongue" caps.
The Dell website lists four possible parts:
Manufacturer Part# 3X705 | Dell Part# 3X705
Manufacturer Part# KH487 | Dell Part# 310-7703
Manufacturer Part# 7X050 | Dell Part# 310-2870
Manufacturer Part# KH487 | Dell Part# 313-4188
...but they all show a picture of the old cat-tongue caps, not the bumpy ones that came stock with the later D-series laptops .....
Received a new Latitude E7440 today, and I like having the option of a pointing stick and a trackpad depending on what I'm doing, however the pointing stick apparently also can be "clicked" instead of using the dedicated buttons... this is annoying to say the least.
When I'm moving the mouse pointer with the pointing stick, if I press a little too hard it thinks I'm trying to do a click/drag.
I can operate the dedicated buttons just fine, so is there some way to disable this pressure-sensitive click feature on the pointing stick? Otherwise I'll have to disable the stick entirely as it's more annoying that having somebody randomly clicking the mouse buttons while you're trying to work...
I want to be able to scroll with my pointing stick using the pointing stick middle button, but no matter what I set it at with the synaptics software it will only perform the action which the touchpad middle button is set at.
Am I missing some check box I need to uncheck, or something else that I am not seeing. I already tried updating the driver and uninstalling it and reinstalling it, and I tried it with the touchpad disabled, but nothing has worked.
I am experiencing an issue from the usage of the pointing stick (I have gotten accustomed to it) where the cursor would drift slightly about 3-4cm before it stops when I let go of the pointing stick. It occurs maybe about 5-10 times on a working day. The funny part is if I continue to move the pointing stick and letting go just right before it finished drifting, it would continue to drift perpetually until I allow it to finish drifting i.e usually drifts 3-4cm away from the pointed area. It causes me inconvenience whenever im dragging an icon or a browser around and it can get pretty annoying.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've read about marks being left on the screen when closing the lid of Macbooks but I didn't expect it to happen on my Macbook Pro (late 2007 model) because the keyboard keys are slightly recessed and rounded.
Well, technically the problem didn't arise from the keys but rather that sharp edge just below the spacebar and above the trackpad. What I have now is a thin line that's about 1" to 2" across. It makes the screen look slightly faded in that area. I figured that it came from that spot below the spacebar after placing a sticky note just below it and observing where it touches once the lid closes.
I guess it's not a terrible problem but it is kind of annoying. It especially annoys me to think that I might get a little less when re-selling the computer because of it
Just wanted to let those of you who use the same computer know. It'd be good to place a cloth or something over that area when shutting the lid and transporting the computer. I'm guessing it must have been slightly squeezed in that area of the screen at one point or another while the lid was closed.
I got a MBP 13" 2.26ghz with 2x 1gb RAM. I was thinking of buying just 1 2gb ram and install it on my MBP so total it's gonna be 3gb RAM.
So, I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried using different size RAM together? I know it's not advisable to do that due to possible instability in performance. But I would like to get some opinion from experienced user.
My XPS 17 screen sometimes goes black like the display is turning off when using USB sticks, SD Memory cards or even an external Mouse. If you move the mouse it will resume but if you pull out the USB drive again it will go black causing you to have to move the mouse again. Even using programs that use the User Account Controls will cause it to go black (unlike how User Account dims the screen) causing you to have to move the mouse to bring the screen back.
The only way to stop it from going black is rebooting, until it decides to do it again. However even if you aren't using a USB anymore after it started going black, it will go black at random even when using the internet causing you to have to reboot. It will only do this if the USB or user Account has triggered it going black first.
Sometimes this doesn't happen for a week or two and sometimes it happens a few times a week. Dell has replaced my motherboard and my Graphics card with brand new ones. It seemed to have fixed it until it did it today (week later)
I don't believe it is software related as I have all the latest bio updates, driver updates and windows updates.
I tried something I've never tried before. While it was going black using USB drives I tried pulling the battery charger cable out from the back. When I did that, it completely stopped going dim without a reboot. I've never tried this before and no matter what I tried before doing this the screen would always go black.
Could it be my Power Cable that charges the laptop? or could it be my display? It seems it's related to the charger because me unplugging it seems to have fixed what ever was messed up until it occurs again at random.
i do a benchmark with my XPS1730 , and i got 11545.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm with Studio 1535 and strangely for me with:
2 GB Kingston
1 GB Sam sung
on Dell Web my notebook appears as only 2 GB Kingston.
But Kingston is very good ram mark.
Samsung is wide used by HP.
So I guess they both are very good!In my eyes Kingston is better but Sam sung is not bad too. (I doubt my samsung blank little overheat but I don't have issues with my ram till now, so...)
I'm currently looking for a new laptop so can you give me a rough estimate at what .........

I've just had a look at device manager and noticed there's an exclamation mark next to the dvd drive, I havn't used the drive for about a week so I'm unsure when the problem occurred.
I uninstalled it from device manger after downloading the driver from dells website but when the app runs it says 'drive not found' so I'm unable to reinstall the driver.
I've ran a live linux cd which worked fine so it must be a windows thing?
I've also refitted the drive to make sure it hadn't come loose.
I've got a new Inspiron 15 (S/N DPDYC12) with Ubuntu, installed Win7 x64 on it, installed the correct drivers from the Dell site, and on launch it brings up the error Synaptics touchpad 64-bit enhancements has stopped working. When I try to enter mouse options in control panel, I get the error Unable to connect to synaptic pointing device driver.Tried reinstalling the driver, rebooting, etc. I can't use multitouch or scroll on the touchpad.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell studio 1737 64-bit laptop upgraded to windows 7. I start my computer and the only thing not working is the mouse pointer. The pointer works but, the zoom and scroll doesn't. I downloaded the latest driver version 7.101.102.224 went to device manager and says the device is working, no conflicts. I went to msconfig and it's listed as one of the start up programs. And, yet the zoom and scroll is not working. I made sure I installed the 64-bit version. I opened the file and clicked on the Apoint file and a install window popped up and, I clicked on yes and, now the zoom and scroll works. When I restart my computer it doesn't show up in the system tray and the zoom and scroll doesn't work. Is the Dell touch pad and Alps pointing device 2 different programs that both have to run at start up and, if so how do I get the Alps pointing device to run at start up?
View 2 Replies View RelatedReplaced my first macbook pro because the screen was crap and causing weird effects on certain parts of the screen, now do I have to exchange this one because of weird scratches/discoloration when seen at a certain angle with the light on it? I tried wiping it off with iKlear, it's still there. this is absurd. when i had a 15" i7 antiglare, the first one had a ding in the screen so i returned it for another immediately... ended up selling it because 13" fits my needs more financially and portability wise.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have successfully completed a fresh install of Win XP Pro on by laptop and the final driver that just will not install is the Intel Chipset driver. I have downloaded the latest driver from Dells website using my laptop tag to get the correct drivers.
In device manager I have a yellow exclamation mark against SM Bus controller. However, when I install the chipset driver at the very end, the install says 'error, install will now end', then you click close and then it wants to reboot. SM Bus controller remains with an exclamation mark in the device manager.
However, poking around the European Vaio link site I've found a couple of news: first an updated Graphics driver here, but also poking around (in the Originally Installed section) saw an updated Alps Pointing device driver. The version I have installed is 7.2.* while the one for the VGN-Z51XG is a 7.5.*. Downloading the driver I could see that it supports two finger browsing, pinching to zoom and a couple of other features.
Nifty I thought; however I cannot install the driver in my computer - it says "Your operating system is not supported".
Has anyone else tried this? I thought that the pointing HW in all Vaio Zs was the same? Surely Alps cannot build a driver that only works in Win 7 x64 Professional but not Ultimate?
Can someone with a Win7 x64 Professional try to install the driver and then report back with both succcess or failure?
I just bought a lenovo z50-70.. Its using Elan pointing device, the scroll is two finger scroll..however, i need the same one I am used to before in my other laptop.. if you swipe up or down one finger on the right side of the touch pad, it scrolls..
however, i cant see this option in Elan Pointing devices manager..
I'm new to Dell and all of a sudden a great many files have a blue clock face and red exclamation point on top of file thumbnail. What does it mean and how do I remove them. Can I remove them in bulk. I backed up my whole computer yesterday, but the blue clock and exclamation point still remains on many many files and folders.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I got my new inspiron n5110. after i had installed OS, i installed drivers, with bluetooth driver amongst them. I managed to make everything work just fine, except bluetooth radio. I downloaded original driver from Dell support page and installed it, but device manager shows "Generic bluetooth device" with a little yellow exclamation mark. when i go to the properties of the device, it says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". i tried a lots of things but none worked. then finally i tried to uninstall driver, and found out that uninstaller throws error: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." i'm running win7 enterprise x64 ....

I just took delivery of a new E440. I've noticed that when I type a " character, on the first key press nothing appears on the screen. If I type another " then two appear together.
Is this a 'feature' - a way of turning it off so I get just what I type, or Does this indicate I have a keyboard problem?
In certain light it's just freakin' invisible, so I have to constantly move around to find an angle that I can actually see the screen at.
Is there some sort of matte-ising coating I can stick onto the screen? (Ideally something which comes in a 17-inch size so I can cut it down to size for the XPS and the 13/15" Crapbooks)
I currently have the the Dell M1330 with the 4965agn. Had some problems at first but is working beautifullynow.
I am upgrading to the Dell Studio XPS 13 and it has the Dell 1515 Wireless Card, I've been reading that people are saying the Dell 1515 Wireless card have poor performance. Could anyone recommend a good rock solid wireless card with great performances?
I was thinking of switching out the 4965agn from the old laptop to the new one. Or maybe get the Intel 5300 AGN wireless card. possibly the Intel 5100.
I received my G570, and have had internet issues since. It can connect to my WiFi network, however after using the internet for a few minutes, it consistently gets the yellow "!" over the wifi icon in the task bar and says no internet connection and I loose my connection. I know it is an issue with THIS laptop since my old and decrepit HP laptop which sits next to it works perfectly fine using the same network, as well as my smartphone and room mate's devices.
I have downloaded the Lenovo update software and attempted to use it. I get a message saying something along the lines of no available packages, assuming that means everything is up to date in terms of drivers.
I have done some research with the terms "lenovo, g570, wifi, internet, problems, connection" and yield many pages, however none have seem to provide a solution that works for me.
I received my E6400. In short, I like it. It came with 1gb of Ram. So I ordered 4gb of Crucial (2x2gb) ddr2 6400 to put in it.
Well. It's only recognizing one stick of it. The Ram itself is not bad. I've verified this by placing each stick in individually and I get no errors. Would there be any reason the computer would not be recognizing that second stick that isn't hardware?
The bios says the second slot is empty. Which either means that for some reason the software isn't recognizing the ram or the second slot itself is bad?
Ah...specs.
Started out with XP. It did the same thing. only 1 stick was recognized.
I've installed Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
T9800
Bluetooth upgrade was user installed.
What other system info do you need?
