I just took delivery of a new E440. I've noticed that when I type a " character, on the first key press nothing appears on the screen. If I type another " then two appear together.
Is this a 'feature' - a way of turning it off so I get just what I type, or Does this indicate I have a keyboard problem?
I bought a lenovo e440 specs i5-4300M(2.6GHz),4GB RAM,500GB 5400rpm HD,14in 1366x768 LCD,1GB NVIDIA N15V-GM, CDRW/DVDRW,802.11bgn wireless, 1Gb Ethernet,UltraNav, Camera,6c Li-Ion, running windows 8.1 64 bit all drivers are installed and working properly .
My problem is when i am using avidemux or handbrake or nero recode 2015 to convert video my cpu usage is always at 100%.its not using the nvidia cuda capabilities to take load off the cpu .its like the switchable graphic is always stuck on intel 4600 .
I tried updating the graphic cards and latest bios update .tried putting the power at high performance. Opened nvidia settings and added programs to the list to be used with nvidia graphic processor . In bios i have selected the nvidia graphic card ... still the same cpu is at 100% during video converting .
Can any E440 and E540 owners confirm whether these laptops feature the ability to remap the Fn and Ctrl keys? I understand a BIOS setting provides this function on previous E-series models, but haven't found information specific to the newer models that confirms this setting is present.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Lenovo E440 screen flickers when I plug or unplug the AC power charger. I think this happened after I installed all the drivers. This doesn't occuer when the windows was still 'fresh-installed'.
I read on other thread that this also happened on other machines and I think the cause is the same, the refresh rate change from 60Hz to 50Hz when I plug the AC power and then it goes back to 60Hz when I unplug the AC power. So I plug the AC power then change both refresh rate to 60Hz. It went fine when I unplug the charger, but when I plug the charger again the refresh rate for while plugged in change to 50Hz again no matter how I try (so it flickers again when I plug the charger again).
Also, I am using Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation and I've installed the latest Windows Updates, Lenovo System Updates, and Nvidia driver update.
My question is:
1. Is this software error or what? If it is software error then shouldn't this occur on all user?
2. What is the difference between the display refresh rate? Which one should I use (I though higher refresh rate is better)? Why does the refresh rate change when I plug/unplug the charger? If I remember correctly AC power source is 50Hz, does it related to this problem?
I have a newish (4/2014) Thinkpad E440 with a 500 GB HD. All of a sudden, the hard drive has filled up. I cannot account for all of the space. Here's what the system says:

So you can see this is a wee bit over 135 GB. Where in the world is the rest of the space? Here's what I've looked at / done so far:
"System Protection" is turned on and is currently using 10.48 GB. I have the max set at 3% (13.59 GB). There are currently 3 saved restore points. --> EDIT now it says it's using 5.97 GB and there are only two restore points now.I've run "Disk Cleanup" and it says I could regain 33.6 MB. Whoo-whooooo!The disk was 1% fragmented so I ran defrag.I ran the error checking tool on the drive and it said there were no errors on the drive. FYI: When I go to Lenovo Solution Center and click on Support and then go to Configuration History, the calender there shows the yellow triangle with the exclamation point in it for "System Events" on every single day that I use the laptop. When I click on one of those days, it shows multiple "Application Errors". This has been going on since the day I got it. I don't know if there is a log somewhere that is spiraling out of control.
I forgot to say I use Kaspersky Pure 3.0 for virus software and I have it performing a Full Scan, a Vulnerability scan and a Critical Areas scan every day. I also scanned the drive with Malware Bytes and it did not find any malware. Also I am running Win 8.1 - it came that way from Lenovo.
I did have 10 updates that failed to install for some reason. The error code for all of these is the same (80240054) but I don't get any results on the MS site for that code.

I don't use IE and it's obviously not a Surface Pro... Why Bluetooth would go away?? My computer also ended up in Airplane Mode for some reason, but I turned that off. On the Network Window under Wireless Devices, Bluetooth shows as Off and is grayed out...
The T440s has no embedded number pad and no Num Lock key. I post to a weather blog and the degree symbol (Num Lock > Alt+248) is almost as common as the letter A.
1. How do I insert ASCII characters, such as the degree symbol, using the T440s keyboard?
From reading specs and reviews of third party USB number pads, it appears that the combination of Num Lock, Alt and the number pad does not work to insert ASCII characters.
2. Will the Lenovo 33L3225 Thinkpad Numeric Keypad allow me to insert ASCII character codes as if it were part of a full keyboard?
I find the omission of this function on the T440s puzzling.
I received my G570, and have had internet issues since. It can connect to my WiFi network, however after using the internet for a few minutes, it consistently gets the yellow "!" over the wifi icon in the task bar and says no internet connection and I loose my connection. I know it is an issue with THIS laptop since my old and decrepit HP laptop which sits next to it works perfectly fine using the same network, as well as my smartphone and room mate's devices.
I have downloaded the Lenovo update software and attempted to use it. I get a message saying something along the lines of no available packages, assuming that means everything is up to date in terms of drivers.
I have done some research with the terms "lenovo, g570, wifi, internet, problems, connection" and yield many pages, however none have seem to provide a solution that works for me.
I own an Edge 15, 64 bit processor. It came with 2gb RAM. I recently purchased and installed two 4 gb cards for a total of 8gb RAM. I updated my BIOS. Under "Computer>Properties" it is showing only 4 gb Install RAM. Why is it not reading or the system not using the additional 4 gb of RAM on the second card?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAcer V3-111P laptop and when using the keyboard on the laptop, typing a certain letter that letter will add an extra character. Example, typing letter e, it will add ex, letter q will become q1, letter c will become hc. Not all letter will do that but there are a few.I've reformatted the laptop already and updated the BIOS as well. Also deleted the keyboard driver and re-install after to no avail. Still the same thing to those letters.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen typing in a document, in wordpad for instance, the cursor (and text entry point) will suddenly jump elsewhere. Typically up a couple of lines. Since it happens while typing, I end up corrupting the document.
Disabling the touch pad does not solve the problem.
I have a T430s and I love it so far, except one negative thing is that it keeps "skipping" around whenever I type. During typing, on random occasions it will skip to wherever the cursor is placed at that moment, often in the middle of a word I had already typed previously. (It has done it 4 times while typing this message) Obviously, this makes it very annoying to have to re-do a word or sentence over and over. I definitely don't type extremely fast and try to be careful with my hand placement, but as a normal sized adult male, can it be possible that the new Chiclet Keyboard makes it easier for my fingers or palm to inadvertantly move or press the touchpad which causes this problem? Or is this a software defect?
This is my second Thinkpad and I've never had this problem before.

Using Win 8.1 x64 and the latest Synaptics drivers, if I'm typing or holding a key the left click does not work. I've tried every setting in the Synaptics control panel and can't figure out how to disable this behavior.
How to disable this? It's very annoying, especially as there is a delay after pressing a key before I can click the mouse of around a half second.
Easily recreated by opening notepad and holding down the A key, then trying to left click something.
I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 with Windows Vista. I want to disable the touchpad when using a USB mouse. The touchpad does not show up in the control panel under 'mouse'. There is no button anywhere near the touchpad. There is no function key with a mouse or touchpad symbol visible on it. There are 4 buttons on the top right, 3 control volume, and the 4th one looks like an orange suitcase with a wrench, but it doesn't appear to do anything. How I can disable the touchpad to stop the cursor from jumping all over when I'm typing?

View 7 Replies View Relatedthe way the F keys have been switched on my Edge 14", today I came across some time to fiddle around with it. I googled what I needed to do...and came across this question on yahoo, which is exact what I need. I bought Lenovo Thinkpad Edge several months ago, and I really like it so far. But I use MS Excel a lot and I always use shortcut keys which involve F1~F12. On my thinkpad, I always have to hit "Fn" and "F1~F12" keys simultaneously, and it is a little annoying since I've been used to using F1~F12 keys without hitting "Fn". So I went to BIOS keyboard setting, and enabled the Function key lock. It became a little bit better, because now I don't have to hit "Fn" and F1~F12 simultaneously, but I could press "Fn" AND THEN, F1~F12. But what I really want is the "Fn" key always on without pressing it. On the BIOS screen, it says hitting "fn" key twice keeps "Fn" key always on, but whenever I hit it twice and hit F1~F12, it doesn't function like F1~F12 key, but it just controlls the sound volume or display light. Is there any way to keep "Fn" key always on without pressing it everytime I want to use F1~F12 keys?"
In short, in the BIOS page, once "enabled", you are able to double tap the Fn key and have it stay on without you pressing it each time; however, it doesn't appear to work that way and turns off everytime you use a F key.
The thing they call "edge to edge glass" which is really just plastic above an ordinary screen. The thing is, that the screen under that edge to edge plastic is a nice anti-glare screen, no kidding! You can see this if you take your laptop in sunlight and tilt it the right way.
So what's happening is you're getting the worst part of an anti-glare screen (reduced contrast ratio) plus the worst part of a glossy screen (unless you have a really pretty face).
I took the plastic thing off, cut along the black/clear border, pulled out the middle, and stuck the centerless border back on the laptop.
Result? THIS SCREEN IS FANTASTIC. Yeah ok, of course I would say that. But if you knew me, you'd know that was way out of the ordinary and really meant that THIS SCREEN IS FANTASTIC.
One thing you may not have considered is that the screen in its default position has yet another flaw, both sides of that glossy plastic thing are glossy, so some of the light coming from the screen is reflected back to the screen, and as you know light reflected onto the screen has a yellowish tint. That is my guess as to why the whites on this screen are really really white now, and the screen is much brighter. This also explains why other 300nit screens used to look so much brighter than this.
I will have more pics when I am able to charge the battery to my good camera. If anyone has any questions about removing that plastic thing I'll be happy to answer your questions, it's actually pretty easy. For those interested, here is how I did it:
1. I removed the "star" head screws, this was accomplished not with a special star head screw driver, but an ordinary flat head precision screw driver.
2. Put some paper over a hacksaw blade to avoid scratching, wedged it under the plastic near the top where the camera is, and snapped out the first of the several lock-in points on along the top edge. I proceeded to detatch the rest of the top of the screen in this way.
3. Both the left and right sides were held on mostly by adhesive, the very edge point locks in slightly, but the efforts removing these sides are focused mainly on separating the adhesive bond.
4. I pulled upward on the plastic and it came right off, there seems to be no adhesive or lock-in points on the bottom side.
5. Using the center of the screen as a test area, I tested several cutting utilities and decided on the utility knife. To my surprise, the plastic was about 1mm thick.
6. I clamped the screen down to the table, with a straight edge positioned 1mm inward of the black line, to give headroom for errors.
7. I cut along these lines, and repeated step 6 for each side, and pushed out the center to reveal the border piece that now resembled a common laptop screen enclosure border.
8. I used a medium grit sand paper to bring the cut lines to meet the black lines, and finished it off with a fine grit sand paper.
9. I applied some electrical tape to the area between the edge of the screen itself, and the edge of the laptop on the right and left sides because there was light leakage, and then popped the border back on and screwed it down.
Found the charger! Here's the high res shots. They do *some* justice to the screen quality.
How does this screen do for viewing blu-ray movies? I know that everyone is raving about the RGBLED, but if this option is still good, then I'll go with it, because it's about $250 cheaper...

Heres a video I made to demonstrate the ammount of flex on the edge to edge lid. It does have flex and bend, but its not as bad as the one j3n82 reported. I recorded with an iPhone so the video quality is crap. Also forgot I had left it in portrait mode when I recorded it (I didn't have a tripod so I used a cup lol). But I hope it gives some of you a basic idea of the quality. I thought openning the blinds to allow the vertical lines will show the bend/flex a lot more. I was applying quite a bit of pressure, although it doesn't seem like I was in the video. I felt as if any harder I might have damage something, or maybe pop the edge to edge screen out. I used an 8lb dumbell, I think thats the limit.
If you noticed the cloth I used to cover the keyboard when I closed the screen, I did this this to avoid getting the smudges on the screen when I pushed the lid down onto the keyboard.
At the end of the video I tried showing the Edge to Edge display, notice how theres another layer of screen over the bezel. Thats the difference between the edge to edge.
I just bought an Edge 130 and wanted to set it up today. But I just can't enter the BIOS! I keep pressing F1 during the Lenovo splash screen. I've pressed it repeatedly, held it down, I even tried it with the Fn button pressed. Nothing worked.
I've have been working with and professionally supporting Lenovo (and before IBM) notebooks for over 10 years and not once did I have such a problem. This is only the second E-series notebook I have ever had. I bought myself an E525 last summer and had no such problems and at work we have T-, X- and W-series.
ThinkPad Edge, Win 7 Sp1. For the last month I have had a problem with the control key always down. Programs react as if the control key were pressed. MS Word 7 gives an error message that the control key is down and asks if I want to go to Safe Mode. I have had the keyboard replaced with no change. The computer has been thoroughly checked, all drivers, patches, software upgrades have been made by my Tech, and the Bios has been flashed.
Last week, I found a post on Google for Win XP where the poster had the same problems. The fix was to ensure that the Sticky Keys were turned off in Ease of Access on the Control Panel. I went to Ease of Access and turned off all of the selections, and the fix seemed to work. However, yesterday the problem reoccurred. I don't know if it is a problem with the motherboard, hardware, or with Windows. It appears that this problem affects more than one version of Windows.
My Edge E40 has no display, I tried
-Hard booting... 60 secs of holding power button without battery or A/c adaper
-Removing the RAM HDD CD and tried booting
-Attaching to my old CRT monitor
NOTHING works
How can one find if it is booting at all since there is no HDD indicator in E40..??

on Dell Web my notebook appears as only 2 GB Kingston.
But Kingston is very good ram mark.
Samsung is wide used by HP.
So I guess they both are very good!In my eyes Kingston is better but Sam sung is not bad too. (I doubt my samsung blank little overheat but I don't have issues with my ram till now, so...)
Replaced my first macbook pro because the screen was crap and causing weird effects on certain parts of the screen, now do I have to exchange this one because of weird scratches/discoloration when seen at a certain angle with the light on it? I tried wiping it off with iKlear, it's still there. this is absurd. when i had a 15" i7 antiglare, the first one had a ding in the screen so i returned it for another immediately... ended up selling it because 13" fits my needs more financially and portability wise.

Occasionally I will have the following icon pop up on my screen and refuse to go away: A reverse google image search told me this is the logo for the "thinklight", which as far as I know is not actually equipped on this model. As a side note, I have seen this happen on a friend's E530 as well.

Primarily, no matter what power setting I'm on or settings I change the display will turn off after 1 minute. Ther other power settings still come into play when they should (computer sleeps etc.) but I'm not able to delay the screen turning off.
