Dell :: Shocking Discovery My Studio 17 Uses An IPS Panel
Feb 24, 2010
there are many different flavors of TFT LCD display panels. MVA, IPS, TN, ASV etc. IPS panels are coveted and are what high end, digital graphics Hollywood artists use and Professional photographers use, because of their superior view angles and accurate vibrant colors, Also Apple uses IPS panels in their Cinema Displays and in the iPad. Down side is they are the most expensive.

just by coicidence, I decided to purchase a Panasonic TC-L32S1 1080p HDTV which uses a 10-bit IPS Alpha also known as IPS Pro LCD panel, because of its great view angles, and great for gaming and have no motion blur because of IPS as well as deep rich vibrant colors.

Now there is a simple way to determine what type of LCD panel you have by switching your didgital camera to Macro, and putting it righ against the laptop display take a picture then zoom in to the image on your desktop. And you can see the pixel structures all are unique to the type of LCD display panel. Basically the DNA finger prints of what makes up the pixels of your display......

Since i got the m1730, i decided to open up my old xps (it died from overheating) but any way took out one of the fans, and my god...the entire left heat sink had a wall of thick fluff stuck into it. No way on earth would any air get threw that, its no surprise its oveheated till destruction. Its a shame because a simple hour's maintance would of prevented it. Lesson learnt i think

i ordered a 15.6" studio 15 with a LCD panel 1080p (1920x1080). i wanna switch to 720p (1280x720) because i think it's a waste of money, especially if i don't need it (i'll be using it for homework, college, and occasional video games/movies).
1. what are the advantages of 1080p vs. lower resolutions?
2.how would the screen look compared to lower resolutions?
3.how much battery power would it consume, compared to lower resolutions?
4.would it have any other effects on your eyes, compared to lower resolutions?

The shipping Packing Slip for my unit lists the following for the LCD panel..
PRODUCT CODE: U771G
Description: Module, Liquid Crystal Display 17WUX, Red/green/blue,Lg Philips LCD,M6400..
Can anyone confirm if that the correct product code for my Original Quote which stated "17 inch Wide Screen WUXGA RGB-LED LCD for M6400 (320-7312)"..
i'm guessing that its the RGB backlit display i'm expecting. its NOT the covet model.. and I didn't go with the E2E because I wanted more of a matte display..
My other question is:.. is it just me or does the LCD Housing seems to be very flimsy and has lots of flex when lifted from the corners..

This may be an unusual inquiry but I'm wondering how hard it can be done.
Yes, I took a look at their service manual but if you have done it and have some tips, please let me know.
I have 2 Dell Studio 1535 laptops bought from their Outlet.
System 1: Blue LCD cover, ATI 3450 video, Duo Core 2Ghz.

I got my Studio 17 on Friday and have fiddled with it since then loving almost everything it has to offer. On the flip side I'm deeply disappointed by the screen.
First of all the brightness is borderline acceptable. I didn't opt for the LED backlight since I assumed the brightness would be on the same level as the HP Pavilion I owned.
With this being said I urge all of you potential buyers to choose the LED backlight option other else disappointment awaits.
But the biggest dismay is the quality of the screen, it's so disastrous that I can't enjoy watching any movies on my laptop. My Pvilion has absolutely extraordinary image reproduction, the screen quality was second to none while the Dell has a screen I would expect to see on an Acer. It's pale, contrast isn't good enough and colours don't look alive and vibrant. I'm glad that I bought a Sony V4000 32 inch TV two weeks ago which is what I use as a display, and it's light years ahead of the Studio in image qualitly.
More over there is a horrendous leakage of light on the lower part of the screen making the taskbar and the blacks look pale. Lastly the viewing angle is embarassing, the screen has to be tilted in a certain angle or else the image looks terrible. My HP looks spotless from pretty much any angle and the same applies to the Sony TV as well. I'm very disappointed by this, especially when dell equip their laptops with Bluray which isn't justified on such a screen. I feel that they are making the standard screen sub par on purpose so that people are forced to opt for the more expensive options.

I have changed my dell studio 1535 motherboard after ordering a refurbished one from dell. When reconnecting all the parts, everything worked well except the control media button <Previous Track> which was lighting up by itself from time to time.
I unplugged the media control panel, plugged it up again. This time the media panel is lighting up intermittently and the laptop cooler is at maximum. Unplugged again, a cable pin was short circuited and got broken in the process :(.
Fixed the cable, now the media control panel is completely down and the cooler runs at maximum speed. Removing the media panel fixes the cooler issue.
As I am not an expert into this, I was wondering if changing the panel will fix my problem or the faulty connection could have broken the motherboard control panel circuit.
PS. When running diagnostic via F12 key, no faulty issue is detected.

I did a clean install of Win 7 Pro and now the IDT control panel has disappeared along with the system tray icon.
I tried reinstalling the drivers but haven't figured out a way to get it to come back. I know its bloat, but I liked having the extra control over the sound...

There are two different LED Panels used for E4200.
Toshiba is not a good one, which has some bleeding issue.
Samsung is the best, which is soft.
You can figure out which panel you own on your E4200 via looking at the bottom of LED panel (Golden color means that you have a Toshiba one, and Silver one will be Samsung. Toshiba one also shows a lot of small bulbs at the edge, bad, bad...

I need to swap out the LCD panel on an Inspiron 9400. It's the TrueLife high res (WUXGA?) 1920x1200. The current panel looks bright but a bit washed out.
Someone mentioned that there are multiple vendors for the panel, and that some are better than others. Dell said that their records show that my system has Philips/LG whatever that means (I didn't think the two companies were affilated, are they?)

This is on an M6400 with Windows 7 64-bit. I installed dell's newest drivers for Windows 7 64-bit, and everything seems to be working fine, but I don't have the Bluetooth item in Control Panel. That becomes an issue if I turn the Bluetooth radio off from the tray icon, because if I do so, the tray icon is gone, and there's no easy way to turn the radio back on.
So, does anybody know how to fix this?

Just installed 3dMark06 and Fear2. When I ran 3dMark06 i got ~11.800 points, after reading on several sites and comparing the scores it seemed pretty average/ even good.
I then tried Fear2, I maxed out the setting 1920x1200 / High / 0x AA /4xAF, it ran pretty smooth but then the trouble started..
It began every 5 or 6 seconds to stutter, the game would stop responding and the screen would freeze for a second..
Thinking it was the settings I put it down to 1280 and medium, no difference in fps and the stuttering was still there..
I tried Counter-strike, Prototype, Fallout 3 and a couple of other games, still the stutter in every single game..
In the nVidia contol panel I have disengaged the V-sync.
My speccs are 8800GTX SLI, T9300, 4gb Ram and Windows 32 bit Vista. I have updated all the drivers to the latest drivers and I have also made sure that PhysX is disabled.
The machine just came out of the factory so all the Dell software is still installed.
How can I manage to fix the stuttering problem?
I am also thinking about going over to Windows 7 seeing that it is free and supports 64-bit.

I purchased a Dell M1730 laptop a couple of years ago. A few months after I received it, the original LCD panel was shattered in an accident.
I shipped it back to Dell and they replaced it with a new Samsung panel (not sure what it had before) which looked just as good, except that after a couple of months it developed a one pixel wide red vertical line 80% of the way up from the bottom of the screen near the left side.
Because the line wasn't very distracting (only showed up on certain colors like dark grey and dark red) I lived with it for a while, but I recently decided I should get it fixed since my warranty is running out this year.
I emailed Dell recently and they sent a technician to my house while I was at work (my wife was at home) and he repaired the M1730 so that the red vertical line was no longer present.
I'm not sure what the exact nature of the repairs were, but he did mention to my wife that apparently when my panel was previously replaced, they had only used 2 of 8 screws .....

I've been researching the Lattitude E4200 and was wondering if people could chime in with more information about the screens available on the E4200.
I know that for the E6400, there is a lot of talk about screens, but it seems like there isn't for the E4200. I've read the few posts that there are regarding the two options that are available: Toshiba and Samsung.
Is there a general consensus of which one is higher quality? Does anyone have side by side comparison pictures? The information that I've read through is pretty scant in terms of not having many responses.

I ask this because it's semi-common on enthusiast cars with weak points: Would anyone be interested in making a custom, aluminum bottom panel for the XPS 16 with air holes and screw holes pre-drilled?
I imagine it would maintain/add rigidity while providing greater heat dissipation (especially with an aluminum cooler underneath) and provide greater air flow around the hot under-touchpad side.
I ask because I imagine this would be a fairly simple thing to create, since it's a single sheet of aluminum with hole drilled at precise areas, vs. some of the more exotic individually-made parts I've seen.

I have an Inspiron 15R laptop and I have found the touchpad to be very, very sensitive. I have found the adjustments but have not been able to decrease the sensitivity to my liking. So, I disabled the touchpad and installed a wireless mouse that I had used in the past but it now appears to have quit working. Is there a way to get to the control panel to re-enable the touchpad?

I can't adjust screen brightness using either function key or in control panel. Using the function key the little panel of brightness volume shows up on the screen but does nothing. And in control panel, through either the bottom brightness scroll or the power option won't change anything. Only time when the brightness will change is I unplug the power, but in the power settings it won't let me change/adjust the brightness.
And what is the battery function key for? I press it and it does nothing. XPS L521x

Im just about to buy a Vaio TZ because of it's size, weight and its great battery life. My only concern is the display, if it's a 6-bit or 8-bit panel.
I know the Vaio TT is already out and sports an 8-bit panel, but with a price as twice as the TZ right know, the only reason to go for the TT would be that the TZ had a bad 6-bit panel.
