Dell :: Slow Bios Boot
Jan 12, 2009
i currently have the a12 bios and when i turn on my 1530, it takes at least 30-40 seconds for the bar to load up.
It stops 80% of the way and then freezes then the dvd drive makes a noise and loads up. Like i dont know why it is slow to startup. What factors are causing this? Computer works fine.
its just the Startup dell bios screen that takes forever. I tried to go back with the A08 and A09 but all it did was make slower.

I have recently purchased an inspiron 14z, I'm quite disappointed in how long it takes to boot. For instance it is considerably slower thsan my older latitiude machine which does not have a hybrid drive. Is there something I can do to check the intel smart start (or whatever) is working correctly? Is the 32gb SSD portion supposed to show up as an extra empty hdd at D://?

A week or two ago my Studio XPS 16 use to boot up fairly quickly, but now it takes about 3-4 minutes to boot up from shut down.
The only things I have running at startup are Zonealarm, Skype, Dell Touchpad, NOD32 Antivirus, and Dell Quickset. I'm running Vista 64-bit. Has anyone else experienced slow boot times with their SXPS 16?

I had receive an old one compaq laptop evo n800c from my father, but I have a problem with this laptop. only for booting (cold or hot booting) it takes about 6 minute stuck in compaq logo in the beginning
I had enabled quick boot option in BIOS but it seem doesn't work because the time needed for booting does not change, such as before a quick boot is enabled

I have Windows XP installed through boot camp, and it seems the hard drive is acting very very slow. Or basically XP in general. Installations are taking a very long time. It literally took 4 hours to install Modern Warfare 2. In case anyone is wondering I have the 2008 iMac 2.4 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 7200rpm HD. Also in device manager, under SM bus controller there is a yellow question mark, could that be part of the problem?

I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on my Acer Aspire AS1410. Maybe it's normal, but the hard drive LED is solid on for about 30 seconds before it boots into Windows 7 during the floating windows screen. Is this normal?

There was a lot of gunk pre-installed on the Acer 6292 portable I bought about 6 months ago (eNet, ePower, ePresentation, eDataSecurity management etc, etc.), running under Vista Business (now with SP1). These make boot up very slow.
It has been suggested elsewhere (specifically in microsoft.public.windows.vista.general News Group) that these are not very useful and could be got rid of. I would like a second opinion before I uninstall these.
Specifically, are these interrelated - e.g. can I uninstall some (e.g. eDataSecurity) without affecting others (e.g. eRecovery) ?
I am a bit cautions about uninstalling as the Acer did not come with a recovery (or Vista) CD, and I would have no way of going back.

When I boot up my Y50, The lenovo logo comes up and the windows 8.1 loading logo below it lags. It starts slow and then goes back to normal. The problem is, My other laptop which is also windows 8.1 it boots up 2x as fast even though my y50 has better computer specs. Both laptops have fast boot enabled.
Edit: My other windows 8.1 laptop boots in 14 seconds while my Y50 boots in 35seconds. There is noticable lag when it boots up.
Edit 2: A Video URL...
Edit 3: ALL good now!

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have experienced slow boot times and many more color wheels when launching apps that I had with Leopard. From reading other Snow Leopard posts, this seems to be contrary to what other users are seeing. I updated to 10.6.1 hoping that would fix the issue, but so far has not. I'm about ready to wipe and do a clean install, but wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing the same problems.

I have replaced my old sata disk with a ssd disk . Intel 520 240 gb. on my T520. I have a Windows 7 and a minor Linux partition. Dual boot. I have moved the old image with Arconis True HD.
However, there is a HUGE difference in boot times between Windows and Linux.
Windows is 1 min and 35 sec with windows logo until login screen appears. Then additional 20 seconds.
Linux is 7-10 seconds from Lenovo sign in bios until I'm ready to go. Off course I did not expect Windows to boot as fast as Linux, but things has worsened after the change.
When Windows is up and running the SSD disk is preforming in the same speedy way as under Linux. It is just the boot situation which is terrible. AHCI is enabled .

2 customers complained of very slow boot times 2-5minutes on these machines.
Removal of the Msata 24GB fixed it. I have asked them to check if express cache is installed but seems to be an ongoing problem.
What can lenovo do about this? Will replacement of the Msata drives fix the problem or is there a bios update coming which can remedy this.

My Acer V3-371 that I bought 5 days ago is slow after updating BIOS from v1.05 (when I bought) to v1.08 and v1.11.
I have checked hardwares and see that:
- CPU: OK
- RAM: OK
- Wifi, Ethernet, Bluetooth: OK
- HDD: NOT OK (see the attached picture) This situation usually occurs to halt the system for a while repeatedly.
(Both of OS Win 7/8/8.1/10 Preview and MS Office software are installed from the iso files downloaded from Microsoft websites)
I carried it to Acer Service Center, but they could not find out any problem with HDD and missed to check the compatibility of BIOS with HDD.

I got this laptop a few days ago, I currently have 7 and XP installed on it and kind of have vista...(read further down).
My 7 seemed to break today after playing around with a program called powerstrip trying to get my external monitor to show the right resolution (I've realised now the cable vga was broke, but meh) but this is not the full problem, after windows 7 failed to boot I tried to boot xp after turning it off during the windows 7 splash screen and now im stuck with a dash when I turn the laptop on (I dont know if its actully related to something I've done or not).
If I turn the laptop on a flashing dash comes on in the top right, it then stops flashing and turns into a none flashing dash further up the screen and just locks here and I cant do anything at all other than trying to restart it. When I had this problem previously (at least I think this problem) on my desktop it usualy turned out to be something usb related but I have everything unplugged (all though the bluetooth adapter light is on when it is doing this) so I realy dont know what to do...............

I get the error in the Title after i tried to flash the latest BIOS update for the Z510. I can press ok and then get into the boot manager but i cant choose anything there. Also I cant boot from a Disk with e.g. XP on it.
I also tried the Inside BIOS crisis mode (fn+r) with the BIOS file on my USB drive but it doesn't work and tries to access the file on the USB drive but boots normally instead to the error again. (Couldn't try it with removed battery as I have to remove the whole back to remove the battery on the Z510).

I recently updated my Dell m4800 to BIOS A8 with Windows 7 64. I had been using a collection of older power adapters from my previous Dell m4400 without any issues. After the update, wow. A huge performance hit if I do not have the 19.5 volt and 9.23 amp adapter connected.
The m4400 power adapter is 19.5 volt and 6.7 amp. Pretty close right? Not any more.
I do have it connected to a Dell docking station almost all the time. Just checked. They are both 6.7 amp.
What changed in BIOS A8 and what the deal is with the performance? Looks like I need to request a new docking station, but I'm not sure IT will believe my story.

When I restarted I got a blue screen saying "memory parity error". I restarted again the blue screen was gone, and it tells me a NIC adapter is having problems,
and asks me to press (S) to shut it off. When I tried pressing 'S' it didn't respond (more like it froze), so I restarted again.
This time I can finally boot into windows. But now my 'new hardware found' wizard went berserk, and kept on telling me there is new hardware found, non-stop. I had a look at my Device Manager and noticed the following had exclamation marks on it:
-OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 host controller
-intel pro/wireless 2915abg network connection
-Ricoh R/RL/5c476(II) or compatible cardbus controller
-SDA standard compliant SD host controlle .....

My Inspirion 7000 will not boot and won't enter bios setup. I turned on mode to reduce cpu usage, and to show startup on screen. Next thing I know it won't boot.
If I press f2 early during what should be the post testing it says "entering setup" at the bottom of the screen. It hangs right there and goes no further.
I've pulled the hd, cd/floppy, battery, tried everthing suggested from another user I found who had the exact same problem.
[URL] ....
I've tried to boot several different ways. It always hangs there at the 'entering setup' - won't boot from floppy or cd.
This laptop has worked without a problem for years. Running Win98se
Is there anyway to "reset" the bios when bios itself cannot be loaded?

2 beeps I thought was a memory issue but the screen doesn't say anything about a memory problem. there are 3 options 1 boot to windows 2 boot options and the 3 I cant remember. option 2 and 3 may be out of order. I have looked in bios for memory test to turn it off but I don't see it. pressing F1 (first option) boots normally and system runs great as usual. 1 other thing, the battery light flashes red 4 times and then holds white for a second then cycles back to the flashing red. this all started at the same time. I tried to do a bios update but im already running the latest version so I get the window that says it wont be completed. the battery does seem to last a very long time as it usualy does, its a 9 cell battery.

I've attempted updating my XPS 1640 BIOS to A11 in my notebook.
It hanged up at the half of it (it said "Erasing block 16 of 32") and after waiting for 1 hour, I restarted the computer...
Now it doesn't start up, when I press the power button, the 3 volume keys start to blink for some seconds, then the keyboard light turns on, and the computer turns off after a couple of seconds.

What I Was Doing:
All I wanted to do was install an SSD (SanDisk Extreme 240GB) as my primary drive using factory recovery created from Dell Backup and Recovery/Recovery Media from USB drive.... I was trying to update firmware on the SSD. It requires a download and the creation of a thumb drive to which one boots after adding it in the BIOS. Ever since I tried using that thumb drive during boot (on power up it was in a USB slot with the intention of opening BIOS and setting that thumb drive as a boot device to complete firmware update) things have been a mess.
The Problems:
I have run into a situation where no matter what key I press during startup, it has no impact on the startup. Main problem is that F2 will not open BIOS. F12 does not show Boot Order.
Here are the symptoms:
Cannot access BIOS or Boot Order during POST All partitions on the factory 1TB hard drive now show in Windows File Explorer whereas previously only the partition labeled C: OS was shown
Potentially Stupid Things I Tried:
I discovered that if there are no hard drives installed, the system will boot to a DOS-type screen with options for Boot Order (with no drives it lists only Network Boot), Setup, Diagnostics, and Boot Configuration.
Setup takes me to the BIOS (vA11) but obviously with no drives showing Diagnostics takes to me to a test suite which when run gives me an error on the video memory but all else tests OK (tests of the video memory from within the Dell Suite within Win 8 show no errors) Boot Configuration gives me Legacy, UEFI Secure and UEFI Not Secure
I also downgraded the BIOS from A11 to A08 and then back to A11 in hopes of getting back access to BIOS but no luck.

I have an Inspiron 17R SE 7720 running Windows 7 64-bit Pro which has been working fine, but I was thinking about getting an mSata flash drive to cache the hard disk, and reading on this forum discovered that my A01 bios version wasn't up to the job, so tried to update the bios tonight.
I downloaded the 7720A12.exe from the Dell site but wanted to backup my bios first. Again searching this forum, I saw a post that said there was a backup option when running the exe. Wrong.
Running it from within windows it immediately said it was going to reboot (I wasn't given an option!). My laptop powered down as if doing a restart, but immediately hung.
There was nothing but blackness on the screen, no text, no beeps. It appeared to be stuck in a boot cycle, as the screen back light was coming on, and off, and on, and off etc, for 10 minutes straight.
I powered down and powered up and I get the dell logo and can enter the bios setup, but after that, no matter what I do, I get a dos based "BOOT MENU" with just these options on:
Network Boot <- does nothing except messes up the display of this menu Setup <- loads the bios settings Diagnostics <- runs a diagnostic program which tests the hardware and reports all tests pass Change boot mode setting <- does nothing except messes up the display of this menu
I can't get passed this menu.
I've tried booting from a DVD - both a Windows 7 installation disk, and the Dell recovery DVD I created when I first got the laptop, neither DVD boots, and apart from buzzing the DVD drive, don't have any effect at all.
Both disks have been tested in another Inspiron laptop I have, and I also set the boot priority order in the bios so that DVD is the first item in the list.
I've also tried a bootable USB stick, but no joy there either. The light on the stick shows it's being accessed, but I still end up at the Boot Menu above.
