Dell :: Studio 15 Fan Running At Maximum RPM "randomly"
Dec 5, 2008
for those who own the Studio 15 and have been unlucky enough to experience the spontaneous loud fan that occasionally turns on. By "occasionally" I mean almost all the time and by "loud" I mean full blast for hours on end. This problem may persist whether the machine is running the A02, 03, or 05 BIOS and can be extremely frustrating, especially in a quiet environment such as a library or lecture hall. It doesn't appear to be a software issue or a BIOS issue since the problem persists with any version. It is in now way related to dust or high temperatures.
I recently noticed that applying pressure in the area of interest (circled in red) seems to activate the fan into running at maximum RPM; at the same time you may observe that taking pressure off the area of interest makes the fan stop immediately (or soon after, presumably because the plastics bend back into shape). I am not sure whether this problem is the result of the motherboard (which observably flexes) or that pictured screw or whether something is making contact underneath the keyboard, but I thought I'd share this bit of information with others who may be as frustrated as I am with this problem. I will be dismantling the entire computer soon to look closer into the issue.
it also appears that gently bending the laptop mainboard upwards (when the laptop is sitting normally on a desk, not upside down) stops the fan immediately.

Having issues with my XPS 14z freezing randomly. The system never seems to be overheating when this problem occurs and it has occurred when I've had as little as one program running. I have had issues with this laptop shutting off randomly before. Dell sent someone out to replace the motherboard, heatsink and fan and this had the system running reasonably well for a while. However now I have been presented with a new issue which could be related to the one I was having before?

What is the maximum amount of system memory I can throw into my XPS16? I have 4 GB in there now, however I thought when I built mine I could go up to 8. The reason I ask is because the system manual that came with my machine states that it can max out only at 4 (2x 2GB).

I have changed my dell studio 1535 motherboard after ordering a refurbished one from dell. When reconnecting all the parts, everything worked well except the control media button <Previous Track> which was lighting up by itself from time to time.
I unplugged the media control panel, plugged it up again. This time the media panel is lighting up intermittently and the laptop cooler is at maximum. Unplugged again, a cable pin was short circuited and got broken in the process :(.
Fixed the cable, now the media control panel is completely down and the cooler runs at maximum speed. Removing the media panel fixes the cooler issue.
As I am not an expert into this, I was wondering if changing the panel will fix my problem or the faulty connection could have broken the motherboard control panel circuit.
PS. When running diagnostic via F12 key, no faulty issue is detected.

I've been having this issue for about a week or so. I thought perhaps it was because I updated the ATI driver, but I did a rollback and the issue still persists.
I have checked my battery settings and nothing stands out. I don't have my laptop set to go to sleep under any circumstances other then closing the lid, but during operation it will just go to sleep.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. When it goes to sleep, sometimes the power button is unresponsive in waking the computer back up. It will take quite a while before I am able to do anything to get the computer back up and running.

I'm new here, so I apologize if I'm not doing this right or if this has been addressed.
I recieved a new Studio 1535 for Christmas. It was purchased on Thanksgiving Day so its past the 21 days. Everything was working great, but all of a sudden, randomly the eject button started lighting up and trying to eject a cd.
This did it for a little while, my sister has a MAC and says her's does the same thing. It was my first time with a slot loading cd drive..so I took her word for it.
Then it kept happening. Next, the volume button would light up..raise the volume up all the way on the screen and stay there. I would manually try to lower it, and it wouldn't let me

Really odd issue. My touchpad does not respond at all after I wake the computer from sleep mode. The mouse buttons do not work and the touchpad is completely impossible to get to move. The only solution is to shut down the computer entirely and turn it back on.
Does anyone else have this issue? I've re-installed the mouse drivers and it keeps doing it. There is no way to re-create the problem; it just happens totally randomly (and usually very inconveniently).

I'll be using the computer and all of the sudden it turns off, it doesn't log off or say it's shutting down, I mean it literally loses all power. Then I try to restart the computer and you can hear the machine start to come on but then it dies again. I've tried charging it, I took the battery out and put it back in, etc. I'm just not sure what the problem is. I've only had the laptop for 1 year and 3 months and a few weeks before the year warranty expired the computer started to say that the battery life was coming to an end and so Dell had to send me a replacement battery. I've tried leaving the computer alone for days at a time and still nothing and of course it's no longer under warranty so I can't even call Dell without getting charged.

I have a dell studio 1735, I changed my first boot disk, to an ocz Agility 3 and put windows 7 64 bits on it.
I changed the two slots of memories to an no name (compatible dell products) 4gb X 2 running at 800mhz eaches.
Put the first time I started my computer, it said it have to format the new memories before it would start windows, I accept, then these problems appears...
1- The memory was formated to 667mhz (the totality of gb still there: 8128mb of memory)
2-Many lags came (from video (streaming and on disk) and from a repeat task over a hard disk (I got two disks the other be an hybrid hdd/ssd) giving an error and closing the explorator of windows)
So I want to know if possible to reformat the memory sticks to/or put them to their native configuration of 800mhz....

Flash went perfect, machine works fine. Heres the problem.

when before with the A06 BIOS I only cracked 37C 39C was with lots of video and Gaming.
So I will be emailing DELL to see whats going on, I am very upset about this. Oh and the Fan wont stop running now. and I am at 37C on Core 0 and 33 on Core 1, which is Cool. But the fan does not stop.

I have a Studio 1737 running Windows Vista Home Service Pack 2. I'm running the latest BIOS and all of my drivers are up to date.
When the AC adapter is unplugged and I'm running on battery power the whole system lags. It also turns of when unplugged without warning after about 15 minutes.
Also, I get these error messages in my event viewer a couple of times an hour:
Log Name: System
Source: ACPI
Event ID: 13
: The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly.

I have an Inspiron 7010 which is 2 years old. In control panel devices it tells me to troubleshoot the laptop and cannot rectify problem with Broadcom virtual wireless adaptor. Secondly running the diagnostics say the Read test is not running. These are the only problems but are not affecting the efficiency of the PC. Should I ignore it?

Just received my new xps 15 touch 9530 and have been using it for about a week. I was starting up the laptop and plugged it in during the startup sequence because it was very low on battery. Ever since this the laptop will not reach its full brightness. When i use the function keys to adjust it the bottom half of the brightness bar does nothing meaning the max value is not reached. This also happens under power and control panel brightness options.

tell me whether a 64GB SD card can be used with the Lattitude D430. If so does it require any drivers or special set up - when ordering do I have to specify anything other than a standard card? As a matter of interest what is the largest SD card that can be used with the D430.

(http://www.pcworld.com/article/13207...in_vista.html), I made an unallocated space. However, I can't make it into a new simple volume. Windows says I have already reached maximum number of partitions allowed.
