Jun 17, 2009I have a Sony VGN-S260 laptop. I got it fixed and installed a Western Digital 250GB Scorpio Blue EIDE hard drive. I updated to the latest bios available and also installed WINXP SP3. The HDD is only detected as 137GB on the bios and 128GB roughly on windows. I heard that WINXP SP1 and above supported 48-bit LBA and I did not see an option to add partitions to utilize all space on my HDD. I also tried PM 8.0 and it did not see the extra space. I am in a bind and would like to use my space on the hard drive.

Basically I'm after something similar to what I've got with improvements (a little bigger would be fine but not too big - say 14" max) - good battery life, can have windows 8.1, a touch screen and can get an SSD (again happy to upgrade via crucial or other third party) and can support 16Gb of RAM.

Feb 25, 2015My Aspire E15's brightness is locked at maximum capacity. I can't change it in power options or with the Fn key. It is the same whether connected to the AC adapter or not. While using the Fn key and pressing Fn+Left Key or Fn+Right Key, the on-screen brightness indicator alternates between two levels but the brightness of the screen doesn't change.

May 28, 2010To keep is short I was trying to extend the warrant for my xps m1530.The online systems doesn’t seem to be working after hitting purchase options the page just keeps reloading with Firefox or IE so it’s off to the phone.
My first call I get a quote of $169 for a 1 year or $255 plus a $50 rebate for 2 years. Can you imagine I get disconnected? I call back now I get a quote of $179 for a one year and $254 with no rebate available for 2 years. I ask to speak to a supervisor and of course get disconnect again.
Now I try the chat system here is what I got from them.

While I’m chatting a supervisor calls me and we agree on a deal for $254 for 2 years. I didn’t have a credit card with me so said she would call me at 1pm to make the purchase. She calls gets all the information goes off to process it. Comes back no saying it would be $279 for 1 and $418 for 2 with no gift card available.
I asked to speak to her supervisor and of course disconnected again if you can imagine that. Well thanks for letting me vent.Dell has just lost a long time customer.

Apr 5, 2013I've had this laptop for just over a month and the battery capacity is only at 83% (tested with Dell Support Center). A couple of days ago this was at 87%.
If this is normal for the battery to lose capacity so quickly (nearly 20% in just over a month seems a lot to me..) or should I consider asking Dell for a replacement?

Apr 29, 2013I recently bought a Inspiron 5521 with ubuntu pre-installed, I shifted it to windows 7 OS and also updated the BIOS in the driver installing process,Before I updated the BIOS my Brightness was working fine meaning I can low the it down while on battery and use high settings on AC mode but after I updated the BIOS I could not do this feature any more....when I go to  Power Options to adjust it manually the Scroll bar there doesn't do a thing, even if I low it down or take it to full settings.

My Sony Vaio VGN SZ5MN/B doesn't have the HDD password in bios. It has only the BIOS password.
I've tried to update my laptop bios unsuccessfully, and right now the only solution to use this hdd feature is adding ATA Security eXtension to my BIOS .....

Jul 3, 2014I have an Inspiron 15R 5521 that is causing me no end of headache. When I try to boot it, it starts to boot (audibly you can hear the internal systems starting to go) but the screen stays black and after about 5 seconds, it starts beeping. It beeps continuously approximately once every 2-2.5 seconds, and I have counted up to about 30 beeps (it didn't stop beeping, it was just doing my head in).
It started about six months ago, doing it once when I tried to boot it, but pulling the battery fixed it. However, it got progressively worse until one night it simply wouldn't boot at all. A short-term fix was to mash F4 or F9 once the power button was pressed, but now even that doesn't work. I think it might be something in the boot sequence that causes it to fail...

Can he downgrade the OS to Windows 7(64Bit)? as he has some issues with certain software, which according to the developers won't work on Windows 8. Will the warranty be void if the system is formatted and Windows 7 is installed. Is there any option to go in for a dual boot with Windows 8 and Windows 7. As per the support center, they do not recommend dual booting on a Windows 8 system.

Oct 8, 2011I recently bought a new Inspiron 15R 5521 preinstalled with Windows 8and I have never powered it on because I want to make an entire disk backupas it is in a "pure" state.
I removed its harddrive (Western Digital, 1 TB) from my laptop to connectit to my desktop with 2 harddrives (one for system (Windows 7, 64 bit); the otherfor data (2 TB)), but never started the installed system to prevent the systemfrom writing some system information into the Inspiron disk.Instead I inserted a Windows PE CD embedded with Acronis True Image 2013.I chose "Disk Backup". The Inspiron harddrive had 6 partitions.The destination drive (where the image created was to be saved) was the 2-TB data disk.Clicked "Finish" and writing Partition 1...done, 2...ok, .... 6 ok and"Backup Process Failed!" at the final stage.
The final stage seems to be a partition layout.BTW the Acronis backup system has an option "Ignore Errors" (force complete).I gave it a try too, but the image created was incomplete with only 4 partitions.Macrium Rescue Disk is a similar one but with no ignore error option.I also tried this and failed at the final stage. No image created.The error message was "Unable to read from disk".Both the Inspiron disk and the destination drive happened to be Western Digital ones.I tried Western Digital Lifeguard checker on each and found no bad sectors.
Dell Inspiron 15R 5521 :: Black Screen And 8 Beeps?
Dec 23, 2014I've had a problem with my LCD for a while now. For around six months the screen sometimes turns black unless it is at a particular degree to the keyboard. For example, at 90 degrees there is a good chance that the screen will flicker and will mostly be black. More than 90 usually works.
Couple days ago I turned my laptop off and before it shut down left the room. When I came back after 15 minutes I heard the beeping sound. I turned the laptop off immediately. Â After that, every time I turn on laptop, nothing happens apart from beeping. I tried 'D' and then turn on. Also f12. Nothing changes, screen stays black. I also removed battery and pressed on turn on in order to get rid of excess charge.
