Oct 30, 2009Is that possible to install Windows XP sp2 on DEll Studio 1557 with Windows Vista Home Premium pre installed?
Getting the error acpi.sys on the blue screen when installing the XP.tried googling it, was told to disable acpi, but that option is not available in this bios.
heard that, we can download the sata drivers for XP and integrate them into XP bootable installation disc?? also, can we press F6 when loading XP, and insert the drivers cd of vista to install the raid drivers and resume the setup with XP?
I tried changing the AHCI to ATA.But of no use!

Jan 29, 2010I`ve just recived my 1557 and after 4 days of using it i can tell you this...
I HATE IT! I can`t really use it without overheating! I`m an Industrial Design student, and i use a lot PS, Solidworks, 3dMax, and various rendering engines. While using them, just after 5 o 6 minutes of rendering, the laptop overheats and turns off.
Just when it starts, core temperature rounds 73/75 degrees celcius... it reaches about 93 while rendering... and i can`t even tell when i`m gaming (i used gta san andreas for 10 minutes before ati 4570 reached 105 degrees and core about 90, then it shutted off). I`m so annoyed.... this really bothers me, in a few weeks i`ve to get back to work and university, and i have a usless "POWERFUL" machine!
I need recommendations for a new laptop, because i`m going to send thisone back next week. I don`t care if it is apple, asus, or hp, i need something wich i can really use, and i need it to be just as powerful as this (or a little less, i don`t care, as long as it really works and do de JOB).
My budget is arround 1500 US dollars.
My 1557 Specs: Core i7 720QM, 4gb DDR3 1066, 320gb 7200rpm, ATi 4570.

Nov 24, 2009I am planning on buying the new Studion 1557 with the i7 CPU.
I would like to verify that with a Windows 7 Pro x64 as host, I can use VMware's VMware Workstation and Sun's VirtualBox for virtualization of both x64 and x86 guest operating systems.
If any one on this forum tried this, or know the answer, I would appreciate it very much

Mar 2, 2010It's frustrating that still i didn't receive my Laptop which had been placed for order at 18th of Feb. the estimated date was 5th of March but today they changed it to 15th. i m sooo upset caus i placed the order at 18th thinking that i'll b having the system by 25th of Feb (previous 2 order i received within 6business days). the stupid sales man said me this as well. but ever since i placed the order i can see "Work in progress" status on the carrier website link. the order has not yet been shipped nor any tracking number given. the customer service said there is a scarcity of some parts of the machine. i also checked uk dell website. there is no more Studio1557 with i7 processor. i don't know what to do. i feel so angry with them that i might cancel the order but i need a system. is there any other laptop with i7 processor and 1gb graphics card? guys share with me with some advice. F..u..k..ng DELL....

Nov 1, 2009As per the thread title does anyone know if the Studio 1557 is available with a 900p screen in the UK? It's not listed on the site as an option but I wondered if anyone had asked them as it seems to be available to people ordering in the US.
I think I'll find the 720p screen too low res but I'm concerned that the 1080p will be too high for a 15 inch screen hence the query.

Nov 23, 2009In 2 days ive had my 1557 to just shut down 4 different times.Everything just goes boom off.It could be the DEMO game im playing but upon restart sometimes I get a beep code.
I just hit the power button and it shuts down then I hit it again and it POST and boots like normal

Jan 16, 2010Hi, have just bought a Studio 1557 off eBay, but only after buying (not yet received) did I read various forum comments, here and elsewhere, about overheating issues (especially for the GPU, the HD 4570).
I want my laptop to last years (hopeful, aren't I!). I've read that several members have managed to put a copper shim (with thermal paste either side) between the chip and its heatsink and successfully lowered operating temps. that way, but can't find any mention of exact dimensions for the shim!
There are a couple of sellers on eBay that offer copper shims for laptop chips but they don't appear to have a stock one for the Studio 1557; they are willing to make one to measure, if I can supply dimensions, i.e. size and thickness.
I'd be grateful if anyone who's successfully fitted a copper shim to the GPU, in particular, of their Studio 1557 could post the exact dimensions, obviously including thickness, of the shim.
Dell Studio 1557 :: Memory Integrity Test Failed
Jun 22, 2012As my Studio 1557 kept giving blue screen, I decided to run diagnostics. When both rams were installed I got  2000.0123 Memory integrity test failed. Then I uninstalled one, i got same error.I tried the one i just uninstalled on same slot, i got same error.And then i tried them both on the other slot, i didn't have any errors.
The thing is, fan has been changed 2 times, and mainboard has been changed before. I've been using this notebook with an acceptable Thermaltake cooler from the day I have bought it. Â What makes this notebook like that? 7200rpm HDD? i7 processor?

Apr 4, 2013I have a Dell Studio 1557.  When I attempt to power on the laptop nothing happens. I can see a white blinking power light and nothing else.  There is no other signs of life, the fans do not come on and the CD-ROM cannot be used.
It seems like the AC adapater is working as I can see the blue light around the connector.

Apr 5, 2013My studio 1557 recently had a motherboard failure of some type. Â When I would plug in the power cord, the blue light on the cord would go off. Â I noticed this after I was reading online and the laptop suddenly, without warning shut down and would not turn back on.
A Google search suggest that this came from a motherboard failure. Â I replaced the motherboard.
Now, when I plug in the power cord, the blue light stays on and it is charging the battery. Â The small white light above the power cord plug-in stays white while the battery is charging. Â But, when pressing the power button, nothing happens. Â The white charging indicator and the blue light on the power cord stay illuminated, but the laptop will do nothing else. Â No beeps, no lights, no sounds.
I assume the power button has failed. Â Am I assuming correctly, or is there anything else I need to check?

Nov 21, 2009I purchased a Dell Studio 15 (1557) about a month ago and as soon as I turned it on I noticed the entire bottom portion of the laptop (where the kybd and mousepad are) 'vibrated' - enough so that I called Tech Support for help. At first I thought it must be a bad fan, but after we ran through the Diagnostics and tried different fan settings, the vibration stayed. it wasnt until we put the HD to sleep temporarily that the vibration went away..
Tech Support said it was a bad drive so I had to send my laptop away for 2+ weeks (wow!). I eventually got my laptop back with a new HD installed - the exact same model - a Seagate Momentus 7200 rpm. Im not sure how the repair depot determined the laptop was fixed, because the vibration was still there.They also gave me my old HD back so I could grab any data - so I tried my old HD again to make sure there wasnt a mixup. Sure enough, both the Seagatedrives Vibrated.........................
Dell Studio 1557 :: Cannot Load OS After Original Hard Drive Failed
Feb 8, 2013I'm trying to load a new hard drive for my Dell Studio 1557 LT due to the original failed. I've worked on many PCs and LTs before and loaded software so I know the basics and then some. Problem is, when the LT boots from the OS from an external dvd drive -Win 7 64 Â when it attempts a write to the hard drive at the same point in the installation every time it blue screens then reboots. I cannot capture the blue screen info due to the immediate reboot. I have tried many utilities and other hard drives but the LT wont let me write to the hd to load an OS. I tried loading a hd from another pc then install it into this LT, Â same results blue screen then reboot. Very strange as if the LT wont allow a new hard drive or OS to be loaded. I've been trying to get this loaded for a week now and have tried everything. The hd was even DoD low level formatted too. Is there s Dell disk I need to get it started ?

Feb 9, 2013I should have left it alone but I've never had a bios go corrupt during update. Had A03 BIOS and attempted to update to A09.
Laptop locked up during the flash and now it doesn't even show the bios start up! I removed the BIOS battery and LT battery. Maybe I need to wait longer then 5 mins for the entire system to discharge and then try power up again. So far just a black screen!Â
I just got one problem fixed with loading a new hard drive now this.
Dell :: 1557 Brightness Can't Change
Dec 6, 2009I got my Dell 1557 about a month ago and for a while, it seemed just fine with my display brightness.
I could change it to however bright I want it to be. Then today, when I turned on my computer, my settings for my display brightness was at the highest when it normally is in the middle.
At first I thought nothing of it because I could easily change it with the F4 and F5 buttons, but after I logged on and tried to change it, nothing happened. Not even after I restarted the computer or reinstall the ATI Catalyst Center.

Mar 28, 2010What I found quite interesting in the cnet review is that their performance testing of the Dell 1569 was second place just behind the Toshiba E205-S1904 (the other Best Buy Blue Label). I do not understand why, the specs are basically the exact same specs, EXCEPT our Dell has a 500gb 7,200rpm hard drive while the Toshiba has a 500gb 5,400 rpm hard drive. I would think, if anything our performance would be slightly better than the Toshiba because of our 7,200rpm hard drive. All the other specs are the same.
So, with that being said, why did the Toshiba have slightly better performance numbers than ours, since as I keep stating all the specs are the same except we have a faster hard drive?

I guess I could survive with just wireless G, but it seems ridiculous to be limited to that these days;
I guess I could also just order it and pick up an intel/dell Wireless N card for ~£25 and install it myself,
but again the question arises, why is it necessary? I assume some of you do have an 802.11n card of some description in your 1645/1747's have you seen any problems with it? .....

Feb 24, 2009Recently i ordered a Dell Studio XPS and like many of you with dell's,my main use was to be for audio production,dj'ing or any sort of thing pertaining to music.After ordering and then reading up online,ALOT of people are having problems getting the latency and/or pops skips & jumps out of their sound source.
Some say the problems lie within the Lan card,some say video card.And most importantly,Dell does not have an answer to the problem because they are not trained to understand audio type situations(Unfortunately).So...Here is where we are going to solve this thing(or try really hard because besides that...these are prett good laptops otherwise) Once i get mine in the next 3 days,im going to tell you what i did because i WILL fix it or at least try hard and fail.

Apr 23, 2009 I'm interested in purchasing one of these two. Probably 15'' for the Studio or the 16'' for the Studio XPS.
I'm just a bit confused as to what the target users are, they seem very similar. From what I can see, the Studio XPS just has a better exterior and a superior display.
I intend to use the laptop for document editing, media (HDMI out to hdtv, most likely) and casual gaming. Price range is about 1300 CAD.

Dec 25, 2009Right around black friday I ordered a Dell studio with the following specs listed below. It was $1778 with $649 off making an OTD price of $1212 shipped.
I see the I7 is out & I dont believe that was an option for the laptop either. There was also the 20% bing cashback deal which removes another 220 from the price (I dont quite get the math myself but hey).
I am looking at a Studio I7 with the same price but a 3rd year warranty vs my 2nd .....

Nov 6, 2009I'm university student and ntb is meant to be carried almost daily (16" is ok for me), it's mainly for multimedia oriented jobs, some programming in C and Mathematica, some photoshop or even premiere (occasionaly), A LOT of movie watching. I also want it to be futureproof and well-built.
Dell XPS 1645 meets most of my criteria, but there are few things I'm unsure about...
1) after reading a couple of reviews and many posts on this forum I'm really doubtful if RGB-LED is worth the extra money. I'm not doing colour sensitive job (however I do sometimes edit RAW images in PS), but i want things on the display to look natural, especially in FullHD movies... (and I'm occasional gamer too)
Those who had honor to work with RGB-LED: would you pay for it in my position???
And just to make sure I haven't overlooked something: biggest DISadvantages of RGB-LED are supposed to be: inaccurate colors, bigger power consumption and some heat produced;
while advantages should be: 0,4" gain in size, wider gamut and (maybe) better brightness...
Do you know any more to be added?
2) I'm also considering usual Studio 17 with Core i7 720QM (almost the same config), because it should be cooler, it has numpad and place for additional hdd (I'd buy 80GB intel ssd 34nm for system while keeping stock 500GB for data, I think it's beatiful idea), but what I DISlike about studio 17 is: dimensions, weight, speakers and design (and maybe a bit worse overal built quality).
So which one do you think is better for me?
3) how does combined e-sata/usb work? Since I have a external e-sata drive I have to plug 2 cables at the moment: USB for power and e-sata... With this 2-in-1 port do I need only 1 special cable? Or is it meant to be either/or thing??? From the placement of combined e-sata/usb on the opposite side of ntb than other USBs I'd say that 1 cable should be enough,
