Dell :: Esata Port On Studio 1557

Has anyone successfully used the esata port on their 1557.
I have an esata/usb backup external drive and can not get the esata port to work.
Here's my story and, let's say, my analysis:
I bought a generic 2 HD sata2 RAID1 enclosure based on the chipset Silicon Image SteelVine 5744. It can be used in USB or eSATA2. This embedded chipset (named SiL5744) is known (understand "claimed") to auto-handle Sata I/II and host sata2 controllers that not support the port multiplier feature. The HD are two Samsung F1 1To. There's no jumper to rollback to SATA 1.5Go on them, you can only do it by flashing the HD's bios, however we don't need to do it as I wrote just before, the SiL5744 supports SATA 3Go natively.
The enclosure works pretty well with USB, but *not* in eSATA : the E6500 freezes/hangs just after the POST step (a potential driver issue with the installed vista 64bits is not the reason then). As soon has I disconnect the eSATA cable, the system recovers and continues as normal.
What I've tried/done so far :
Both E6500's BIOS SATA mode AHCI and IRRT mode were tested,
Intel Matrix driver and software was updated to the latest 8.7.0.1007 version (AHCI and IRRT),
The SiL5744 chip was upgraded to its latest firmware as well (in case of...)
In order to verify the esata cable, the HDs and the enclosure itself, I succeed to :
- Use the enclosure's RAID1 feature when using the USB connection, I could partition, format, and read/write on the logical volume
- directly connect *one* HD (Samsung F1 1To) to the E6500's esata port -(I have a sata2esata cable), Vista installed it and I was able to use it as normal, even the hotswap feature seemed to work fine (I unkindly removed it). I could so test both HD individually this way... On the enclosure hardware side, everything looks fine then.
An IMPORTANT thing : The E6500's ICH8/9-M sata host controller seems to support the Port Multiplier feature *ONLY* on sata port 0 -as a bubble message from the Intel Matrix soft sometimes shows up-, but this is exactly where the internal HD is plugged on the motherboard I found nowhere you can change the internal sata port ID (switch,bios,ect...). I think this is the key of the problem that seems to be a dumb port conflict, because the esata port is in fact the port sata 4 (the DVDRW drive is sata 1, dock's esata is 5 for instance). If somebody knows how to swap the sata port ID, I think I won't be toasted !
In particular pay attention to the port on the bottom. This is an "eSATA" port, correct? Now for the crazy question of mine: Is this eSATA port compatible with a male usb connector? I'm pretty sure it isn't, but would like to confirm before I try and destroy something

View 10 Replies View RelatedI pugged a drive into mine for the first time last night (after I figured out that you have to plug in both the eSata and the USB cable for power.)
View 7 Replies View RelatedUSB 2.0 is slow for a back up drive and moving data.
My Studio 17 has a dedicated eSata port which moves data at 3.0GB/sec. Now I would like an SSD drive, with an eSata enclosure. So I can rapidly hookup, back up and go.
Any ideas of what I need or how to go about this.?
I have recieved an external hard drive in the post today along with a cable to connect.
I connected the cable, turned hard drive on and nothing is happening. The hard drive connects via usb fine but that will be much slower to backup 500GB worth of data. Does anyone know if I need to do anything special to get it to work with esata or should it work straight away?
Not sure if the cable is esata 1 or 2 but it should work with either shouldnt it?
Acer 6930G's USB/eSATA Port.
Is this port actually able to be used as a USB without any problems(such as for a USB mouse)? Now for the stupid part of the question, once its used for a USB device will I have any trouble using it for an eSATA device later on? Basically wanted to make sure using it as one doesn't lock it into being one specific type of port permanently.
I used to use my eSATA port every day with a few different devices. I started to have an overheating problem, so Dell replaced the motherboard and graphics card yesterday.
Of course, that means I lost all my BIOS settings. I'm pretty sure I have them back to where they should be (RAID mode on the SATA controller, eSATA port enabled), yet the eSATA port doesn't see a damned thing connected to it.
Every other piece of hardware is exactly the same as it was before. Any ideas as to what I might be missing?
I've had my eye on the Sony Vaio VPCZ11 however, I would like to add an external hard drive for data storage, is the USB port the only way of hooking up an external hard drive? How come a high end notebook like this doesn't have a eSATA port?

It comes with nVidia 7200 Go video card. Theoritically, nVidia video card could come with HDMI, but not always the case. So..how do I know if mine has one? I am actually looking for eSata port since I want to purchase an external HD for backup purpose.
I have an SXPS 1340 running Windows 7 Ultimate. I have tried to connect a Western Digital My Book Home external HD through the esata port but i can't get the computer to recognise it. Has anyone else successfully connected this model HD to the 1340 through esata? To those of you who have successfully connected a different external HD through the esata port what brand and model of external HD are you using?

Is this laptop just not Win8 compatible?
I noticed that the Studio 15 is pretty much the same as the Studio XPS 16 minus the RGBLED screen. I really don't know which to choose and really need some guidance from some expert people. Here's what I have in mind:

Is that possible to install Windows XP sp2 on DEll Studio 1557 with Windows Vista Home Premium pre installed?
Getting the error acpi.sys on the blue screen when installing the XP.tried googling it, was told to disable acpi, but that option is not available in this bios.
heard that, we can download the sata drivers for XP and integrate them into XP bootable installation disc?? also, can we press F6 when loading XP, and insert the drivers cd of vista to install the raid drivers and resume the setup with XP?
I tried changing the AHCI to ATA.But of no use!
I`ve just recived my 1557 and after 4 days of using it i can tell you this...
I HATE IT! I can`t really use it without overheating! I`m an Industrial Design student, and i use a lot PS, Solidworks, 3dMax, and various rendering engines. While using them, just after 5 o 6 minutes of rendering, the laptop overheats and turns off.
Just when it starts, core temperature rounds 73/75 degrees celcius... it reaches about 93 while rendering... and i can`t even tell when i`m gaming (i used gta san andreas for 10 minutes before ati 4570 reached 105 degrees and core about 90, then it shutted off). I`m so annoyed.... this really bothers me, in a few weeks i`ve to get back to work and university, and i have a usless "POWERFUL" machine!
I need recommendations for a new laptop, because i`m going to send thisone back next week. I don`t care if it is apple, asus, or hp, i need something wich i can really use, and i need it to be just as powerful as this (or a little less, i don`t care, as long as it really works and do de JOB).
My budget is arround 1500 US dollars.
My 1557 Specs: Core i7 720QM, 4gb DDR3 1066, 320gb 7200rpm, ATi 4570.
i want to buy the 1557 with the core i7,
i read about the freeze problems in this machine and i wanted to know if it still exists?
if not, what should i check before the purchase in order of getting the fixed?
10x a lot!
It didnt say when customizing it before purchase

I would like to verify that with a Windows 7 Pro x64 as host, I can use VMware's VMware Workstation and Sun's VirtualBox for virtualization of both x64 and x86 guest operating systems.
If any one on this forum tried this, or know the answer, I would appreciate it very much
It's frustrating that still i didn't receive my Laptop which had been placed for order at 18th of Feb. the estimated date was 5th of March but today they changed it to 15th. i m sooo upset caus i placed the order at 18th thinking that i'll b having the system by 25th of Feb (previous 2 order i received within 6business days). the stupid sales man said me this as well. but ever since i placed the order i can see "Work in progress" status on the carrier website link. the order has not yet been shipped nor any tracking number given. the customer service said there is a scarcity of some parts of the machine. i also checked uk dell website. there is no more Studio1557 with i7 processor. i don't know what to do. i feel so angry with them that i might cancel the order but i need a system. is there any other laptop with i7 processor and 1gb graphics card? guys share with me with some advice. F..u..k..ng DELL....
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have been looking for any reviews of the Dell Studio 1557 with Quad Core i7s. Havent been able to find anything.
Does anyone know of any reviews for this machine ...
As per the thread title does anyone know if the Studio 1557 is available with a 900p screen in the UK? It's not listed on the site as an option but I wondered if anyone had asked them as it seems to be available to people ordering in the US.
I think I'll find the 720p screen too low res but I'm concerned that the 1080p will be too high for a 15 inch screen hence the query.
In 2 days ive had my 1557 to just shut down 4 different times.Everything just goes boom off.It could be the DEMO game im playing but upon restart sometimes I get a beep code.
I just hit the power button and it shuts down then I hit it again and it POST and boots like normal
Hi, have just bought a Studio 1557 off eBay, but only after buying (not yet received) did I read various forum comments, here and elsewhere, about overheating issues (especially for the GPU, the HD 4570).
I want my laptop to last years (hopeful, aren't I!). I've read that several members have managed to put a copper shim (with thermal paste either side) between the chip and its heatsink and successfully lowered operating temps. that way, but can't find any mention of exact dimensions for the shim!
There are a couple of sellers on eBay that offer copper shims for laptop chips but they don't appear to have a stock one for the Studio 1557; they are willing to make one to measure, if I can supply dimensions, i.e. size and thickness.
I'd be grateful if anyone who's successfully fitted a copper shim to the GPU, in particular, of their Studio 1557 could post the exact dimensions, obviously including thickness, of the shim.
As my Studio 1557 kept giving blue screen, I decided to run diagnostics. When both rams were installed I got 2000.0123 Memory integrity test failed. Then I uninstalled one, i got same error.I tried the one i just uninstalled on same slot, i got same error. And then i tried them both on the other slot, i didn't have any errors.
The thing is, fan has been changed 2 times, and mainboard has been changed before. I've been using this notebook with an acceptable Thermaltake cooler from the day I have bought it. What makes this notebook like that? 7200rpm HDD? i7 processor?
I have installed the most recent driver but still have no line for Touchpad under Device Manager, Mice and other pointing devices. I have 2 lines only: PS/2 mouse and my wireless mouse.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio 1557. When I attempt to power on the laptop nothing happens. I can see a white blinking power light and nothing else. There is no other signs of life, the fans do not come on and the CD-ROM cannot be used.
It seems like the AC adapater is working as I can see the blue light around the connector.
My studio 1557 recently had a motherboard failure of some type. When I would plug in the power cord, the blue light on the cord would go off. I noticed this after I was reading online and the laptop suddenly, without warning shut down and would not turn back on.
A Google search suggest that this came from a motherboard failure. I replaced the motherboard.
Now, when I plug in the power cord, the blue light stays on and it is charging the battery. The small white light above the power cord plug-in stays white while the battery is charging. But, when pressing the power button, nothing happens. The white charging indicator and the blue light on the power cord stay illuminated, but the laptop will do nothing else. No beeps, no lights, no sounds.
I assume the power button has failed. Am I assuming correctly, or is there anything else I need to check?
I purchased a Dell Studio 15 (1557) about a month ago and as soon as I turned it on I noticed the entire bottom portion of the laptop (where the kybd and mousepad are) 'vibrated' - enough so that I called Tech Support for help. At first I thought it must be a bad fan, but after we ran through the Diagnostics and tried different fan settings, the vibration stayed. it wasnt until we put the HD to sleep temporarily that the vibration went away..
Tech Support said it was a bad drive so I had to send my laptop away for 2+ weeks (wow!). I eventually got my laptop back with a new HD installed - the exact same model - a Seagate Momentus 7200 rpm. Im not sure how the repair depot determined the laptop was fixed, because the vibration was still there. They also gave me my old HD back so I could grab any data - so I tried my old HD again to make sure there wasnt a mixup. Sure enough, both the Seagatedrives Vibrated.........................
