Dell :: Studio Western Digital Disk Quiet "clicking"
Nov 30, 2008
My WDC WD2500BEVS-75UST0 (HDD) "clicking" in IDLE MODE.
On normal or heavy load I can't hear the click.
But in IDLE - my WDC clearly "clicking".
I used NHC and set the option "Max Performance 254" and It is fine all the time.
But I hate NHC and overall addition programs in the start-up.
I found too the HDD has jumper:
http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc....p?p_faqid=1410
To reduce "Spin UP" but I'm under warranty, and it is no option.
Any advice. It is not big deal, and I can hear it only when my HDD is IDLE but....
OS: Windows Vista
HDD temperatures: normal range - 33-35-37 C
Maximum reached: 40-41 C
The temperatures are fine by my opinion.
NO BAD SECTORS!

I'm sicking of having to set hdparm to 254 every time i resume from sleep. It's annoying as heck.
I also don't want to hear my damn drive clicking all the time. I've done some digging and apparently WD has released a firmware update for this drive to fix the issue.
However, I cannot find this anywhere. Does anybody know where I can get a hold of it?

I have recently purchased a Dell Studio 14 laptop with Western Digital WD3200BEVT 320 GB 5400 rpm HDD. I installed Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10 immediately after purchasing it.
I am aware of the Load_cycle_count issue and would like to fix it. But with so many threads on the topic available on the net, I am a bit confused.
Has anyone applied the fix on the Studio Laptop with the above HDD yet? If yes, can anyone please share their experiences/caveats etc. so that I can confidently go ahead and apply the fix .....

I've recently purchased the Dell XPS 14 ultrabook and it is probably just about two months old now. Everything was so perfect until just yesterday the laptop started to make a quiet fast-paced clicking noise inside it. I don't know where it is coming from but all I know is that the noise is definitely inside the laptop. It starts usually about 2-3 minutes after turning the laptop on and then lasts for about 1-3 minutes. Is this normal? And is there a way to stop this noise? I know its just something little but I just think it's not normal to have this problem for such a new laptop.

If yes, then I would like to know how it performed (too hot etc?)
I don't know which hard disc my SZ came with.

I have an HP DV2700 laptop (core 2 duo T5450 @1.66Ghz, 2GB of ram with vista home premium 32-bit).
I have a Western digital scorpio 250GB HD at 5400 rpm (WDC WD2500BEVS) and I am having some trouble enabling the write catching (and in extension, advanced performance mode.) I have tried accessing device manager and selecting 'enable write caching on the disk' however the policy does not persist once i apply the change. Despite my disappointment, this was to be expected since the comment 'this device does not allow its write cache setting to be modified' can be seen underneath the option. Being a tweaker of sorts with regards to vista, I was certain there is a way to allow such modifications to take place.
As an aside, I wanted to know whether enabling these policies would decrease spin up time? More specifically, decrease the amount of heat emitted from the hard drive. Of those who own DV laptops, this is an understandable request, seeing as the base of the laptop, under stress, becomes uncomfortably hot.

I fitted the above HD into my Macbook Pro unibody a fair few months ago and it generally works great, I was even more impressed at how easy it was to install as I'm by no means a computer expert!
Anyway, the one niggle I have is that my Pro is running hotter, so much so that instead of a niggle I am a little worried.
It seems to be worse when I am running programs with the Apple OS but also using Windows XP with Fusion. The heat is a worry but the noise of the fans is just plain annoying. Prior to fitting this hard drive I never heard a peep out of the stock 250GB drive, either from the fans or the drive itself (as an aside, I can hear the new drive, but its quiet and not a problem). Likewise, it never seemed to get hot.
What confuses me is that the heat doesn't come from the area where the drive is. As you look at your laptop during normal use, the hot part is to the rear left of the base (i.e. the keyboard part).
I notice that Apple have 500GB drives available as an option on Macbook Pros now, does anyone know what make these could be? Also, does anyone have any experience with these yet?

Recently, my laptop has been running loudly. I thought that it was the fan that caused it, but I disabled the fan and booted the laptop, the noise is still there...so I figured that it has to do with my hard drive. In addition to the loudness, my laptop easily gets hot even with me just surfing Google on Firefox. Is my hard drive failing? Should I bring my laptop to HP to get it fixed/replace hard drive? How much would it cost to replace one for my model? My warranty has not expired yet, would HP cover the replacement for me? No accidental damage has occured to my laptop and the problem just came up. Now I'm really confused whether or not my laptop is failing ...

So as the title states, I am wondering if it is possible to play a video with audio encoded in Dolby Digital on my laptop, pass it through to my TV via HDMI, then out via optical to my receiver. I have a friend who owns a HP business laptop with a SoundMAX sound card, but also an ATI graphics card. We are both running the Realtek ATI HDMI 2.39 drivers, I have the latest drivers from Dell for the IDT sound card on my Studio XPS 16 (1640). He says (and I've seen) he is able to do Dolby Digital this way through an option (see attachment).
However, I do not have this same "Custom" tab / option, and we are running the same driver version (at least to my knowledge). Can anyone help me in finding out if this is doable, and if so, what software (and versions) are required?

So I detailed my experience with the hard drive clicking in my blog post here, and I recorded a video to demonstrate the sounds here. Has anyone else experienced hard drive clicking in their
Dell Studios? This isn't so loud that it's clearly a sign of HD failure, but it's not so quiet that I feel that I can blow it off and not worry about it.

There is currently a major security flaw in the DigitalPersona software used by the Studio's fingerprint reader, whereby a user can launch Internet Explorer (or the default browser) without logging on to the system.
If you have the software installed now, go ahead and give it a try. Either log off, or lock the system and then click "Swipe you finger to unlock" account, and then "Enroll Fingerprints".
Finally right click on the animation in the wizard and select "About Adobe Flash Player", launching Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Had the Studio since Wednesday and its great!
However, the power brick has started to make noises? A series of about 10 clicks in quick sucession repeated twice in a couple of seconds.
It will then go quiet for a while then do it again?
Its also pretty hot, too hot to touch for a while and its hot quickly - in about 10mins from cold.
Should I get a replacement or is this normal?
How do I go about getting it replacd? Sounds like its shorting or something?

Does anyone else have a problem with flash videos (Hulu, Youtube) playing the audio at really low levels even when turned all the way up?
Even the windows equalizer only shows the sound being played at quarter volume when the volume is maxed out.
I know the speakers on the E6400 arn't great but if I play mp3s or videos in WMP it is much much louder

I replaced the thermal paste of the CPU and the GPU with "Coollaboratory liquid pro". And I replaced the thermal pad of the northbridge with "Arctic Silver 5" thermal paste.
Here are my sesults (in a 20 degrees Clesius enviroment, T9600, 2,8GHz, stock voltage):
73 dregrees Celsius at 100% load
(instead of 92)
39 dregrees Celsius at 0% load (fan off)
(instead of 45)
According to my research and different experiments this combination is my actual optimum.
The cooler and more silent system supports my usage of voice recognition (using the internal mic).
Of cause later the voltage could be reduced using rmclock.....

Did a clean install of Win7 Pro the day after I received my 1647 (see specs in signature). Updated the BIOS to A04 and received my replacement 130w adapter via courier yesterday.
Migrated my data from my old daily use machine and started to use the XPS1647 as my new daily use late last week. I immediately noticed that the hard drive tends to "click" (for lack of better terminology) on a regular basis. It almost sounds like the drive head is constantly parking and un-parking.
Note: I am pretty sure it is the hard drive causing the noise. Front left hand side next to the track pad is where the noise seems to be originating.
I have the power settings set to never turn off the hard drive when plugged in (this was my initial suspicion of what was causing the noise).
I am thinking of calling Support and just having a tech come and have a look at it. The problem is the noise seems to come and go as it pleases (ie I can't reproduce the issue at will). Of course if and when the tech comes to have a look at it and the noise isn't being produced they will just tell me I am nuts.
Are any other XPS1647 owners hearing the same thing I am? If this is indeed the Hard Drive I am a little concerned as it seems flaky already...

I ordered a custom Studio 15 from Dell last Friday. It reached the "Shipped" status by Monday. The order status on the Walsh Western site. It looks kinda something like this:
Date. Time. Location Activity
23/11/09. 13:30. China. DEPARTED MANU. FACILITY
23/11/09. 05:30. PENDING
Just wondering, how long does it take for the next stage / status update. I'm so impatient and want to know how long it takes on average for delivery. I'm in the UK.
Also, I've heard some negative things about Walsh Western and the quality of their service...

I just checked out Dells web site for the Studio 17 and on the menu you can select 1 500G drive or 2 320G drives.
Does the Studio 17 have slots for two drives ??
If not, does the second drive just come in an extra box ??
What manufacture drives does Dell use these days ?

My new Studio XPS 13 hard disk often emits a beeping noise when it is being accessed. Is this normal behaviour and can I turn it off?
I noticed the beeping from the first time I turned it on. The beeping only occurs once Vista is booted (i.e. not while booting up), and when performing tasks like copying files or running a virus scan.

Description of problem.
I bought a new Dell Studio 15 - 1555 with 320 GB (7200rpm Performance Hard drive). It came preinstalled with Windows Vista Home Premium.
I see two drives as C & D. C drive shows 260GB free of 282GB and D drive (Recovery) shows 8.83GB free of 14.9 GB.
How can I create partitions of my own choice with the space left on the C Dirve?
I believe the existing partition that I have are Primary partitions and the new one are also getting created as Primary, so its not allowing me to create more partition of my choice.
Please help, how can I have atleast 5-6 partitions of 50GB each .....

My Studio originally had a Toshiba, 5400 rpm 250 gb drive in it.
I bought a Western Digital 7200 rpm 360 gb drive to add to my laptop.
I also got the carrier assembly from Dell and I installed the Western Digital into the Studio 17 in drive bay 1 , and put the Toshiba into Drive bay 2.
I had made an image of my C drive with Vista on it, and after installing the new hard drive I put the image onto the Western Digital drive, and all seemed to be well, I booted up and get into Vista, but now I see the C:
local hard drive shows exactly what I had before, and Vista is showing my new drive as Drive F: but it also has all my files on it exactly as the original C image that I made .....
