My new Studio XPS 13 hard disk often emits a beeping noise when it is being accessed. Is this normal behaviour and can I turn it off?
I noticed the beeping from the first time I turned it on. The beeping only occurs once Vista is booted (i.e. not while booting up), and when performing tasks like copying files or running a virus scan.
My Studio XPS 1340 runs just fine, it's not overheating or anything, but once in a while it randomly just beeps. I think it must be an internal buzzer, it sounds like it comes from the left hand side of the keyboard somewhere. It's not too big of a deal, but Id just like to know why it randomly does this.
This is a very strange one , I have a Studio 17, and it has never had any kind of noises coming from the inside, however, in the past few weeks I have been hearing beeps that are coming from inside the laptop not from the speakers. Its a single beep, and does not have a pattern such as beep every 4 or 5 seconds it beeps when it feels like beeping, usually one short beep.
I called Dell, and the tech guy told me that beeping was " normal " and I should not be concerned over it. Can you believe that jerk? "beeping sounds from inside are normal "? I dont think so.
I have tried to think of anything inside this thing that can beep or why I would be getting these beeps and I cant come up with a thing. Originally I thought it was possibly a CMOS battery going bad, but Dell says the battery wont make it beep, then I thought maybe its overheating, but then when I feel the laptop its' barely warm, so Im at a loss.
This beeping is intermittent, it will beep for a while, then stop, then later on or the next day it might beep again for a few hours then stop again.
Anyone have any suggestions on what could beep from inside the laptop? the sound seems to be right near where the hard drives are located if I put my ear to the touchpad area I think thats the area it originates in.
I went to turn on my Studio 1555 this morning about an hour ago, and nothing happened. The power light came on, as did the keyboard backlights, but nothing else. The display stayed off and unlit, and the thing started spewing beeps at me. First a series of three loud beeps: one long beep and two shorter ones (beeeeeep beep beep), a slight pause, and then a series of 6 softer short beeps. Dell's website and service manual have been no help, and I can't seem to find these beep codes anywhere. Also, I ran out of warranty months ago.
I've tried removing the memory sticks, swapping them, relocating them, tried different sticks and different slots, removed the WLAN and Bluetooth cards, and removed the hard drive.
I've had this happen to me two times in the past two days on a month old machine. I'll be surfing the net, then i'll hear what sounds like very brief HD thrashing (but a bit louder than normal thrashing sounds)
for a few moments, then there'll be rapid beeping sounds and my laptop will freeze.

Description of problem. I bought a new Dell Studio 15 - 1555 with 320 GB (7200rpm Performance Hard drive). It came preinstalled with Windows Vista Home Premium.
I see two drives as C & D. C drive shows 260GB free of 282GB and D drive (Recovery) shows 8.83GB free of 14.9 GB.
How can I create partitions of my own choice with the space left on the C Dirve?
I believe the existing partition that I have are Primary partitions and the new one are also getting created as Primary, so its not allowing me to create more partition of my choice.
Please help, how can I have atleast 5-6 partitions of 50GB each .....
My Studio originally had a Toshiba, 5400 rpm 250 gb drive in it.
I bought a Western Digital 7200 rpm 360 gb drive to add to my laptop. I also got the carrier assembly from Dell and I installed the Western Digital into the Studio 17 in drive bay 1 , and put the Toshiba into Drive bay 2.
I had made an image of my C drive with Vista on it, and after installing the new hard drive I put the image onto the Western Digital drive, and all seemed to be well, I booted up and get into Vista, but now I see the C:
local hard drive shows exactly what I had before, and Vista is showing my new drive as Drive F: but it also has all my files on it exactly as the original C image that I made .....
Hi I am new to this Forum and new to laptops I have just purchased this machine, DELL STUDIO XPS M1640 Core 2 Duo 2.93GHz ,500GB,
4GB I got it new on ebay. It arrived today and everything is fine except it won't eject CD's using the highlighted touch button.
I have to go into computer and eject from there.
The machine is running Vista Ultimate. I have contacted Dell and I have to transfer the machine to my name and extend the warranty before they can help. I thought I would ask here first
I have been trying to burn some dvd's and I am having so/so luck. I get a burn on the dvd itself and it will play on my laptop, but for some reason when I put it in a normal DVD Player it does not read. In fact the player will say error on disk.
Might as well outline what I did. Picked up a 2Gb stick of Patriot RAM for my Studio 15, boosting total RAM in the laptop to 4 Gb.
Vistax86 can only use 3.5Gb (Task Manager showed 3518 Mb capable of being addressed, to be exact) of it, and since I plan to move to a 64-bit OS when Windows 7 SP1 comes out, I'm in a situation where I have 500 Mb of unused RAM in my setup.
I decided to use the remaining memory as a RAMDisk. Downloaded and installed DataRam's RAMDisk beta (http://www.cenatek.com/product_page_...load_list.php), a tool recommended in the OCZ forums as part of a series of tweaks for Jmicron SSDs.
I currently have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with a second hard disk I bought and fitted myself. If I get a Studio 17, will I be able to fit this hard disk into the second bay in there? As far as I'm aware the disk itself should be okay, but the caddy might be slightly different for that model - is that right? If so I'll just buy a new caddy or modify this one - otherwise I'll be £100 down for this hard disk!
I am trying to fix my GF laptop model STUDIO 1535. This laptop is two years old or so. It was showing randomly blue screens on win xp sp3, so I checked forums and recommended to do a cleaning. I opened the lid, cleaned the fan ( it had a big ball of fur that prevented the fan to move) and cleaned the rest of the mb with the vacuum cleaner. Now it doesn't work anymore. I tried to disconnect and connect the HD but still the same error. I ran the diagnostic and gave me this error 2000-0141.Â
My WDC WD2500BEVS-75UST0 (HDD) "clicking" in IDLE MODE. On normal or heavy load I can't hear the click. But in IDLE - my WDC clearly "clicking". I used NHC and set the option "Max Performance 254" and It is fine all the time. But I hate NHC and overall addition programs in the start-up. I found too the HDD has jumper: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc....p?p_faqid=1410 To reduce "Spin UP" but I'm under warranty, and it is no option. Any advice. It is not big deal, and I can hear it only when my HDD is IDLE but.... OS: Windows Vista HDD temperatures: normal range - 33-35-37 C Maximum reached: 40-41 C The temperatures are fine by my opinion. NO BAD SECTORS!
I just borrowed my laptop to a friend and he said when he tried to boot it up he go this message.
The message I get when restarting is non-system disk or disk error, press a key to continue over and over.
When I click f10 before boot up there is a harddisk test option, where it says Hard Disk test failed, no disk installed.
So is it either the harddisk or the motherboard thats a problem? AFAIK nothing new was installed leading up to this. The computer is no longer under warranty.
I just bought the Probook 4710s 5 days ago, and some times when I try to start the computer, it just wrights on the screen Non system disk or disk error, please replace and press any key... I don't have any CD or DVD in CD/DVD unit or any USB keys... when I try to scan the hard disk it reports to me No hard disk found. Every now and than it starts Windows normaly, but it keeps repeating frequently the same boot problem and not beeing able to start my comp.
Does it mean that the hard disk is bad or broken, or it will be soon...or what? Should I return the laptop and ask for replacement?
i have a hp 620 notebook, and it is given me an error message "non-system disk or disk error" after i turned it on. it had worked find in the morning and now it is displaying this error message and i cannot log into my notebook. i tried to recover it with hp recovery but it said "data is not valid.
I have a Dell Latitude issued by my company. It "simulate" the system beeping (for example, when login incorrect or when you hit backspace too many time in unix command line) by making a VERY LOUD sound through the sound card..
I have my headphone on at all time and those annoying sound is making me deaf. Does anyone know how to disable this stupid feature?...
I tried to install a new system software update on my Dell XPS 17, but I had to interrupt it in the middle of the installation. When I tried to resume it by starting my laptop then screen went black and it beeps like it was installing, but the screen is still black so I have no clue if it's doing it or not.
My Inspiron 15R N1510 laptop emits a series of 5 shorts beeps, evenly spaced, on start-up. It repeats this until the startup music plays and then stops. Everything seems to run fine and I ran the diagnostics and it passed all of the tests. I am not sure how to make it stop beeping..
When I turn my XPS 15 on, I get a continuous beep code (3 beeps pause 3 beeps pause....), a black screen with the following error message: ERROR 210: CPU Variable MTRR configure failed.
So I have this laptop, and when you try to power it up, it shrilly beeps but nothing else. I am being told it is the CPU, could it be something else? My warranty is long gone on this.
When I turn the power on my laptop. It doesn't do anything, but make this very loud beeping sound. Can you tell me what is the issue and how can I get this issue resolved.
This morning when my brother using my dell 5010 everything was ok but when after 30 mins of using it, it shutdown itself. When he start the laptop, he only hear beeping and again and again. What do you think the problem. My laptop has no more warranty. Its first time to happen that.
