I just got a spare E1705 and bought a 150W Ac brick to install a gtx 7950.
When the battery is charging and the system is off,there is a continuous beeping on the system.
As soon as I disconnect the adapter the beeping is gone.
Seeing as how some people have tried the 130w AC adapter for the XPS 1645 i7 models and it solved their problems and how some still have a few issues(less though than the 90w adapter), I am just curious if anyone has tried the higher powered adapters and noticing any improvements as there are 150w, 210w and 230w adapters out there.
I wonder if there is a cut off at some point, as to how much power can be drained through the adapter for this model. Its possible the 130w is the limit and the 150w+ might be more than it's capable to drain and there'd be no added benefit. Who knows, hopefully someone will try it out and will share the experience.
All I know is its a shame that when you opt to get a nice screen (RGBh) and have to spend more money for it you get shafted due to its power usage. In our day and age that shouldn't even be in the list of possible problems, tell me its a driver issue, a bios issue and I'd understand but this is utterly disappointing .
For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message.

Tonight she accidentally plugged my power adapter into her laptop. A few hours later, she noticed that her laptop indicated that it wasn't plugged in, and that's when we realized that she had accidentally used my adapter instead of hers.
Now my adapter doesn't work at all. We've tried the adapter with both our laptops with different outlets with the same problem, so we know it's the adapter. The green light also doesn't come on when it's plugged in anymore.
Did plugging my adapter into her laptop somehow screw up my adapter, or could this just be a coincidence? Is there any way to fix the adapter or at least figure out what the problem is? And if I have to purchase a new adapter, do the universal ones they sell at retail electronics stores work OK? I would order one from Dell but I'm working on a project now and I don't have time to wait for it to ship.

I noticed the beeping from the first time I turned it on. The beeping only occurs once Vista is booted (i.e. not while booting up), and when performing tasks like copying files or running a virus scan.
My Studio XPS 1340 runs just fine, it's not overheating or anything, but once in a while it randomly just beeps. I think it must be an internal buzzer, it sounds like it comes from the left hand side of the keyboard somewhere. It's not too big of a deal, but Id just like to know why it randomly does this.
View 10 Replies View RelatedThis is a very strange one , I have a Studio 17, and it has never had any kind of noises coming from the inside, however, in the past few weeks I have been hearing beeps that are coming from inside the laptop not from the speakers. Its a single beep, and does not have a pattern such as beep every 4 or 5 seconds it beeps when it feels like beeping, usually one short beep.
I called Dell, and the tech guy told me that beeping was " normal " and I should not be concerned over it. Can you believe that jerk? "beeping sounds from inside are normal "? I dont think so.
I have tried to think of anything inside this thing that can beep or why I would be getting these beeps and I cant come up with a thing. Originally I thought it was possibly a CMOS battery going bad, but Dell says the battery wont make it beep, then I thought maybe its overheating, but then when I feel the laptop its' barely warm, so Im at a loss.
This beeping is intermittent, it will beep for a while, then stop, then later on or the next day it might beep again for a few hours then stop again.
Anyone have any suggestions on what could beep from inside the laptop? the sound seems to be right near where the hard drives are located if I put my ear to the touchpad area I think thats the area it originates in.
I tried to install a new system software update on my Dell XPS 17, but I had to interrupt it in the middle of the installation. When I tried to resume it by starting my laptop then screen went black and it beeps like it was installing, but the screen is still black so I have no clue if it's doing it or not.

I'm more than a little fed up as my old Dell was purchased in 2003 and is still working. I'm not hard on my laptop - it's never taken from home, maintained well and on my last de-frag (2 nights ago), it was in good health with only a quarter of the memory used.
I was told by Trading Standards that I should complain directly to Dell as under the Sale of Goods Act, I should expect something like this to last longer than this. They were interested to here that it seems to be a common fault in the US, too.
What are the chances of getting this repaired? Will I have lost everything on it? How much will a repair cost? Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new laptop?
I went to turn on my Studio 1555 this morning about an hour ago, and nothing happened. The power light came on, as did the keyboard backlights, but nothing else. The display stayed off and unlit, and the thing started spewing beeps at me. First a series of three loud beeps: one long beep and two shorter ones (beeeeeep beep beep), a slight pause, and then a series of 6 softer short beeps. Dell's website and service manual have been no help, and I can't seem to find these beep codes anywhere. Also, I ran out of warranty months ago.
I've tried removing the memory sticks, swapping them, relocating them, tried different sticks and different slots, removed the WLAN and Bluetooth cards, and removed the hard drive.

I recently purchased my laptop about 3 months ago and had no problem with it. But when I went to go turn it on one morning it started beeping 7 long beeps. I did some research and found out that it is a problem with my processor. How do I fix this problem? Or will I need to return it to the place I bought it? View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Inspiron 17R, Intel i3, 4GB RAM. I've had the machine for exactly one week and have noticed several times, this high pitch (almost like a digital watch), that comes on for about 3 seconds, followed by a 'click', as if a disk drive was done working. This noise is coming from within the computer, not the speakers. Yesterday, it did it again, except the pitch changed during it's sound; again, followed by the 'clicking' sound.
The other thing I've noticed (and maybe I'm oblivious to new technology), is the fan on the inside of the computer doesn't stay on all the time. It comes on about once every 3-4 minutes, at a about a 5-8 second cycle. Maybe it's supposed to do that. I'm use to my old machine's fan staying on most of the time, allowing you to feel the heat being pushed out. Not so much on this one.
Now, could these two be related?
Have Inspiron 3520 with W8 - daughter has infected it via Minecraft update. Original issue was dark screen and beeping, 8 at a time. Put on a external monitor and am going through the long process of digging out the bugs with anti-virus and malware removal programs.
Question is this - how can I stop the infernal beeping? It starts up if I insert the power cord or disconnect/connect the external monitor. Is there any way to silence it?
This noise sounds like a garbage truck backing up! No screen appears. Noise just continues 'til I turn off computer.
