I have a dell laptop (E1705) that I bought 7/2/2006 and had a warranty on until 7/2/2007. My warranty expired and I have taken excellent care of my laptop since then but this did not stop my laptop from dieing and refusing now to turn on.
Now, I know this is somewhat slippery but is it possible to reactivate my warranty on the laptop and then have them fix it under warranty? My immediate thought was "of course not" but after looking at the dell warranty website and entering my service code there was an offer for "Limited Warranty Reinstatement" for $49 or else I could select "limited warranty upgrades" and extend my coverage until 7/2/2011 for $149.
It would seem that I could purchase the warranty again. Has anyone done this? If I do get the warranty again do you think they would service the laptop or would I have spent $50 for nothing?
had my s1555 for about half a year and didnt have much problems with it hardware wise.
but recently, after the weather started getting hotter, i noticed my internal temperatures are getting quite high, using hardware moniter, expecially the gpu, which goes up to around 80s fast.
looking at hardware moniter, it seems the gpu heats up really fast but seems to cool quite fast too, like it would jup 3 degrees at a time when in a game.
i didnt pay much attention to it until i was in the middle of a game (warcraft 3, not even a 3d intensive game) and my comp shut down by itself, most likely due to gpu overheating.
If the case is (insignificantly) dented, do they refuse warranty?
Does opening the laptop and changing thermal paste void the warranty? Can they see if I have opened the case or not?
If so, where can I get _genuine_ screws for my XPS M1530 laptop? I'm thinking about the screws which holds down the CPU/GPU/Motherboard plate (2 different types), and the ones that holds down the CPU cooler. Ebay is OK, but it must have international shipping.
I cant believe this really happened. I said in another post that this would happen knowing my luck and it DID. I was just on it an hour ago and the coupon was working now it said its been used up. Im devastated right now, i dont even think im going to be buying a Dell anymore!

I have bought M1530 on 28th of April 2008, together with 1 year warranty. It expired on 28th of April 2009, however from what I am reading I qualify for 1 year extra GPU warranty, am I right?
But when I phoned Dell (it was when my AC adapter broke and needed replacement) on each occasion I asked about this extended warranty and they were always telling me that they never heard of it.
Am I being lied to? Or are they right? When I check the servicetag status of my laptop it says that warranty has expired and there is no extra warranty there (if there was it would apply till 29th of April 2010).
Please can someone explain it to me?
I contacted Dell yesterday morning via chat because my laptop has started crashing when playing fallout 3/wow, again... This time I remained persistent that I did not want another defective new motherboard with a bad 8600m GPU in it, installed for me. I explained that it’s not a matter of IF the replacement will fail, but WHEN. I was persistent that I wanted a better solution than the motherboard swap. I asked to be transferred to the agent’s supervisor.
When transferred I was told that they "redesigned" the motherboard/GPU so this issue was no longer occurring. I explained to the supervisor how he must have his facts wrong because that is not true. I was eventually offered a warranty replacement. It only took an hour of being firm but polite. I was told it would take 1 week to get an order number from the supervisor and I could reference the chat log number if I had any questions.
After I got off the chat, I realized that I forgot to get the dispatch number. Today I went back into chat to get my dispatch number and asked again when I have an order number for my warranty exchange. Today I was told 2-3 weeks for the order number and 4-5+ weeks to actually get the new system. The agents explained that the "We (dell) are seeing a huge backlog in our warehouse and that is the reason we are not committing on a earlier date." I asked why I was told 1 week the day before but I was only apologized to for being miss-informed.
Currently I feel like i am trapped and dell doesn't care about me as a customer, and that is a shame. I am going to be updating this thread as I progress through this process for a couple of reasons. The main reason is I hope that this will help me keep my insanity in check when dealing with the frustrations of spending my money for my "cool" xps 1530 with 4 year complete care warranty that was almost broke more than it worked. It would often take dell 2-3 weeks to get a tech out with the correct part to fix my laptop when it had issues. The second reason it to just document in one central location this process. Finally maybe I can help pass some people’s time out there by letting reading about my story :-)
In conclusion, I am grateful that I was approved for a warranty replacement, and hope that everyone else out there who has “dealt” with dell’s bs regarding the 1530/1330 will get the same result. It just sucks the wait it looking to be about 1.5 months, lol :-)
I was wondering if the battery on the laptop is covered by warranty, i had my computer for about 9 months and i just ran a program to see my laptop battery life and it rated it at a 45% wear level

I used to be able to run through 2- 1 hour classes on power saver with full brightness
my current dell studio 1555 was bought last year July it is capable of run games in good setting but the graphic card will heat up very fast, whenever the gpu rise to 100C then it will be throttled down and temp drops to 80+C and then back to normal clock speed and repeat it is very annoying for me besides, even watching HD video the gpu will also rise to 70+C i have used notebook cooler but no use to gpu is it safe? Should i call dell?

I'm debating whether it's worth spending $200+ to upgrade to a Dell 3 year warranty or should I get a 3 year Square Trade Warranty for less than $150 (I can get one for around $120 after a coupon)?
I've been using my M1710 that I built from parts over two years ago and it still runs great. But guess what sports fans...this thing does have a supreme maintenance issue. An issue that Dell has never admitted. I might even call it a design defect.
And that major issue/design defect is the fact that dust bunnies form between the cooling fan outlets and the heatsink cooling fins located on the ends of the CPU/GPU heatsinks arms. The result is that air flow is blocked and heatsink efficiency goes way down, so "baddaboom baddabing"...higher temps. If your lappy is getting hotter than normal, check your fan speeds if you have I8kfanGUI as they will most definitely be running faster than normal. As an example, my maximum fan speeds are pretty consistant at 42CPU/38GPU. Right now, as I'm typing this they are 44/40 and my CPU/GPU temps are above average so I have to do something I hate to do...
...and you'll hate it too if you're having heat problems, but it MUST be done sooner or later. You, or someone you trust, will have to carefully disassemble your lappy to remove the offending dust bunnies. This requires removing the top palm rest and power switch/hinge covers, keyboard, myriad motherboard connectors, and the video card. Of course, you'll also want to remove the battery first. Here is a link for the Dell service manual to guide you in your disassembly if you don't have access to one: [url]. Until the video card is removed you won't be able to see the dust bunnies since Dell seals the tops of the fan outlets with black tape. After peeling up the tape you'll still have to remove the fans and they will need cleaning also. This is when you'll see why your "Precious" has become a POS. If you've ever looked at the mesh filter screen on your clothes dryer you'll see the same damned thing. So what's next?
After removing the bunnies, thoroughly clean the fan blades, heatsink arm fins and don't forget to clean the bottom case inlet/outlet vents. A mini-sized vaccuum is good to start with and/or take dampened-with-water Q-Tip swabs and maybe even an old soft toothbrush to do the deed. And then?
Afterwords, carefully reassemble your lappy, but don't forget to reseal the tops of the fan exhaust areas. Electrical tape works great. If you unplugged your CMOS battery you'll have to re-enter your bios settings. After boot-up you'll notice the lappy is cooler and quieter and the fans won't be running wide-assed open as often.
Don't forget these lappies generate a lot of heat naturally and any air flow blockage yields dire results. I was quite disappointed after I installed an unlocked T7600G CPU and could crank it up in the U.S, but here in Thailand I can't run it hard above 2.33Ghz for long due to higher ambient temps. This means the cooling system is just adequate and there's not much room for poor conditions.
One more tip. I usually do this cleaning every three or four months and there's always a dust bunny, or two, even if the fans don't look too dirty. Last Spring I actually disassembled the whole unit and used a Dremel to open up the exhaust slots in the back of the case bottom to hopefully increase exhaust air flow . After re-assembly I cut up some old panty hose and taped a small piece over each case fan inlet vent to filter out the dust. If you also add the panty hose filters be careful not to block any of the vent slots with tape. I did this about six months ago and it finally needs cleaning again, so it just about doubled my maintenance interval.
Now then, why do I say this is a design defect? Simple, as this same problem has existed since the XPS Gen2 for all models with discrete graphics cards plugged into the motherboard as they're all the same design. Dell should have revised the design to avoid this problem or at least they could have made the bottom cases such that the cooling vent areas could be easily removed for access. This also should have been added to the manual as a periodic maintenance requirement. I guarantee that they've spent a huge amount of money by having to service or replace probably thousands of these for overheating over the last few years when the condition was avoidable to begin with. How sad, and moreso for the unhappy customers.
Another problem I had with my Gen2 was that the graphics card heatsink wasn't transferring heat away from the GPU and it kept overheating. It was easy to tell once the power switch cover and keyboard were removed because I could then touch the heatsink over the graphics card and it was hot as Hell while the cooling arms were much cooler.
Dell replaced the 6800 with a 7800 under warranty so I was happy at the time.
I'm seriously considering to buy an HP when Windows 7 comes out, but I also hear that some of these HPs can overheat pretty bad. Maybe if you get one like an HDX, but I might go for something a little lighter, I won't be gaming extensively or anything, mainly web browsing and typing up notes for college. Is HP a pretty reliable company?
View 10 Replies View Relatedwell i just cleaned up my desk, i was woundering if i put a towl/clothe over my bead the wtih laptop (cq50 compaq) ontop of it would it overheat? im getting a cooliing fan in 1 week, but i was woundering if it would hurt it. also if it does block the air way, i was using a laptop lap desk, before and it didnt get much air before, it covered the vent i thought, anyway just woundering if it would hurt my laptop, or possibly set the clothe on fire (my laptop reaches high degrees)

I installed SpeedFan to check it and see whether it is abnormally high. Sometimes it reaches about 80-90 degrees on the 4 cores and the hard disk. Slightly before it started shutting down, the fan became very loud and it switches on and off continuously. So I don't know where the problem started.

I figured it must be the game or something since that problem did not repeat itself for a few days. I had to work all week long and I didn't get the chance to play B-lands and soon forgot about the problem.
Today I bought Lineage II Gracia Epilogue and I ran it at nat res with max settings with HDR rendering and all the flashy/fancy depth of field filters and effects turned on and guess what. My notebook keeps rebooting every 15 mins of gameplay even though I average at about 40~45 fps. Same thing happens with Borderlands, Call of Duty 4 and GRiD. Now this is really weird since my GPU temp idles at @ 47-50 degrees but whenever I start playing something it jumps to 78-80 degrees (must be the max amount til it reboots). My 4 core CPU idles at 49~54 and tops 78~81 when gaming. I want to ask you guys if you know any good method that could lower the temp, also could the high temp rates result from dust inside the machine(even though it isn't a year old), would a cooling pad make any difference?

I think my cpu and gpu temps are too high. The idle temps are: cpu: 40-50°C, gpu: 60-70°C. I'm installing WoW now, and the cpu is 74°C, the gpu 75°C. My CPU is: AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-60 (2.0 GHz), graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G. I'm using SpeedFan to watch the temps.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter using my ferrari for about 3 years now it's been with me in a lot of different places, climates, dust conditions and so forth. Lately I started to notice that the laptop was kind of hot , and the primary use of my laptop is internet browsing and office applications so no heavy cpu or gpu loads. The heat was annoying problem but not annoying enough to make me do any actions. But a week ago I noticed that when I watch flash based videos (like youtibe) laptop gets really hot and after 15-20min it just shuts off or reboots . This was annoying as shit. I tried things like putting it on a try of ice, didn't help, and since I don't believe in "gay" things like those cooling pads I decided to get to the root of the problem .
First thing I noticed was that the flow of hot air from the grill around the cpu was very weak, this gave me the hint that the radiator is probably stuck with dust. The solution I came to is simple: open the body clean it and see how it works.............

What makes me think about this lap, is the Acer brand. So far i can say, that the batteries acer makes are crap, because the 6920G isn't the first laptop i experience problems with (especially the battery problem)
I have problem with my Acer 5750g. When I playing games cooler work in passive mode, like it dont know that  should work as much as possible.

When i turn my laptop on, the cooler starting work very good, like it should work all the time when it overheating. But after few secounds its turn into passive/silent mode and doesn't work properly till overheat and turn off again.
I own a acer 6930G and when I start playing game in it it feels like it's temp goes upto 200C or something! I just wanna ask if there's any program by which I can see the temp of my laptop during gameplay? (more like fraps by which I can see the frame rate during gameplay)

I searched on Dell's website with my service tag and the only thing I found was that I have a "Rapid Response Depot"? What does it mean? Does it mean that I can send my laptop to Dell to be repaired?
I read lots of people getting replacements for their 2-4 yr old laptops with Dell warranty. I've been using my e1505 since June 2007 and just ordered 1558 last weekend, but with only 1-yr basic warranty.
Which warranties are those people using? Premium or Advanced? Which is comparable to "Complete Care"? Also, would it be cheaper to buy more expensive warranty at the checkout or buy extension once I receive the system?
Warranties cost only a few hundred dollars and people just seem to be getting amazing replacement laptops, like e1505 to SXPS 16.
my question is, what's the best value with these warranties? I know I should probably be protected, but should I assume that after 1 year I'd be in the clear anyway? Also, I think the 1645 doesn't come with 2 year warranties (for some reason) so those would be out of the question.

I recently contacted Dell due to my Nvidia Geforce 8800M graphics card not being disabled by Windows. I assume I have a physical problem with my card..
Dell now says I do not have a warranty, that it was never transferred. I pointed out the early tech support and the fact that I know for a fact the warranty was transferred by the reseller. Dell tells me to recontact the reseller and again have the warranty transferred. The reseller is out of business..

To keep is short I was trying to extend the warrant for my xps m1530.The online systems doesn’t seem to be working after hitting purchase options the page just keeps reloading with Firefox or IE so it’s off to the phone.
My first call I get a quote of $169 for a 1 year or $255 plus a $50 rebate for 2 years. Can you imagine I get disconnected? I call back now I get a quote of $179 for a one year and $254 with no rebate available for 2 years. I ask to speak to a supervisor and of course get disconnect again.
Now I try the chat system here is what I got from them.

While I’m chatting a supervisor calls me and we agree on a deal for $254 for 2 years. I didn’t have a credit card with me so said she would call me at 1pm to make the purchase. She calls gets all the information goes off to process it. Comes back no saying it would be $279 for 1 and $418 for 2 with no gift card available.
I asked to speak to her supervisor and of course disconnected again if you can imagine that. Well thanks for letting me vent.Dell has just lost a long time customer.
Going to purchase an E6500 and am wondering which OS to go with. This laptop will need to play well with the other machines on our home intranet in terms of file/printer sharing and such. Two of these machines have vista home and two with xp home.
The options are:
vista home basic - included in price
vista business - +$50
1. What are main differences between vista home and vista business?
2. Are both the vista home and vista business 64 bit? If not, how important is the whole 32 bit, 64 bit deal?
In addition, some clarification on the warranty options would be appreciated. I did read the description but am still a little confused.

I'm about to purchase an M4400 as a mobile editing station but I've only got one reservation. Basically, I can buy one with a dell 3 year warranty or I can buy a better speced one for 20% less that doesn't have a warranty as it's from a liquidation of assets sale.
Now, I'm pretty handy with computers/laptop and in the past I've taken apart laptops to replace CPU's, motherboards, hard drives, etc. so I'm fairly comfortable with fixing things when they go wrong. But my question is whether I should expect things to go wrong. I'm especially concerned about the screen and the occurrence of dead pixels. Is this commonplace and how many dead pixels does it take for dell to accept a returns anyway?
At home I have a Dell 2407WFP-HC and I've never had any problems with it. I built my desktop computer myself and I'm not concerned with parts of it going wrong as it's easy to find replacement parts, but the same can't be said for laptops, and there is a significant cost differential!
So, is it worth paying a 25% premium to have the dell warranty? I'm a frugal man, and a penny saved is always a good thing in my book, but not at the expense of having to shell out in 6 months when something goes wrong .....
I have a 4 year warranty on my 1730, I was considering getting a x9000 processor and installing it myself. Would this void my warranty at all?
