Dell :: XPS M1530 Replacement Screws, Warranty Etc
Oct 18, 2009
If the case is (insignificantly) dented, do they refuse warranty?
Does opening the laptop and changing thermal paste void the warranty? Can they see if I have opened the case or not?
If so, where can I get _genuine_ screws for my XPS M1530 laptop? I'm thinking about the screws which holds down the CPU/GPU/Motherboard plate (2 different types), and the ones that holds down the CPU cooler. Ebay is OK, but it must have international shipping.

I read lots of people getting replacements for their 2-4 yr old laptops with Dell warranty. I've been using my e1505 since June 2007 and just ordered 1558 last weekend, but with only 1-yr basic warranty.
Which warranties are those people using? Premium or Advanced? Which is comparable to "Complete Care"? Also, would it be cheaper to buy more expensive warranty at the checkout or buy extension once I receive the system?
Warranties cost only a few hundred dollars and people just seem to be getting amazing replacement laptops, like e1505 to SXPS 16.

I have read a lot of posts which refer to faulty laptop replacement within the first 21 days of ownership. I am in the UK and recall that when I bought a Dell 20" monitor a few years back there was a limitation of 30 days for replacement with a new item.
Following that period, any replacement would be a re-furbished unit. During the 30 day period Dell sent me 3 replacement monitors before I got one with acceptable backlight bleed. They kept sending them without picking up the previous ones. Eventually they arranged a time to collect all the less than perfect monitors.
Can someone post a link to this policy of replacement with new for the first 21 or 30 days only? I have read the Customer Master Service Agreement, the Basic Hardware Support and the XPS NBD Warranty, but I can still find no reference to this policy.

Well my E1505 was a great laptop, but after 3.75 years it started having problems, dell tried to replace parts multiple times, but some of the parts were bad out of the box,
in the end it was like 3.5 months, 5 or 6 in home service calls, couple of dozen phone calls and the laptop was still not quite right. So after getting off the phone with them the last time, they had asked about sending the laptop into their repair depot or if they couldn't repair it the possibility of a replacement system
However, yesterday in the mail i got a refurbished:
Dell XPS Studio 16 - i7/8GB ram/Radeon 4670-1GB/320GB hd/DVDRW/WiFi-N/9-cell/LED LCD 1600x900/WIN7 Ultimate/+ all the other XPS goodies, blacklight keyboard, HDMI, 10/100/1000 ethernet, e-SATA port, 2.0MP webcam .....

One of the rubber grips on the palm rest of my Studio XPS 13 has fallen off, so Dell is sending a service technician to replace the entire palm rest assembly.
Does the warranty cover both replacement and service charges? Am I expected to pay anything?

Like if your laptop is replaced through complete care you know an order number shows up for a while in your account can you just take that and submit it to squaretrade to get a warranty from them?

Long story short, i got a replacement refurbished SXPS 1645 system for a E1505 (problems with the E1505 started 12/09/09, after replacing tons of parts problems persisted as of 03/15/10 they approved a dispatch for replacement system), shipped 03/26/10, received 03/29/10(?) 111 days later I had a working computer again, needless to say i am very happy with the replacement! (Maybe i spoke too soon now 05/05)
(attached are a few comparison shots to a Gateway LT-2005u 10" netbook...my cheap temporary computer I bought in Dec. to use until Dell got everything fixed)
After starting to read the forums here I am concerned about the longevity of the computer, don't get me wrong, i love the computer...its an awesome replacement But i've already started to notice some issues/problems with the refurb I got...Ok the title is answered, i bought Dell's expensive warranty extension 2 years/$500....

Hello, sice the news about faulty 8xxx gpu's I have been hearing that Dell is offering 1 year extended warranty for gpu faults.
Example:
http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/desktop-...ault-39463022/
I have bought M1530 on 28th of April 2008, together with 1 year warranty. It expired on 28th of April 2009, however from what I am reading I qualify for 1 year extra GPU warranty, am I right?
But when I phoned Dell (it was when my AC adapter broke and needed replacement) on each occasion I asked about this extended warranty and they were always telling me that they never heard of it.
Am I being lied to? Or are they right? When I check the servicetag status of my laptop it says that warranty has expired and there is no extra warranty there (if there was it would apply till 29th of April 2010).
Please can someone explain it to me?

I have the Dell XPS M1530 laptop, and of course the motherboard is fried.
The laptop is no longer covered by warranty, and I dont want to buy a new mobo from Dell, because they charge a ridiculous amount of money.
Where can I buy a new mobo with the new non-faulty Nvidia chip? I don't want to buy one of the original ones because it will just overheat from the chip and burn up again.

I currently have an XPS m1530 with the WXGA glossy screen (1280x800) and was looking to replace it with the WUXGA screen (nothing wrong with the current screen; just need more resolution.)
Questions:
1. Can I just do a simple swap? In other words, do I have to worry about details like video card etc.?
2. What are the questions that I need to ask before buying one? (e.g. Manufacturer, warranty, brightness, type etc.?)
3. Glossy vs non-glossy - please let me know your opinions
4. Would the ones sold on eBay (links below) work fine? .....

I had a bad experience with DELL.At the end of last year I bought a XPS M1530. At first it was ok, then it started to have a strange behavior:
sometimes it didn't want to switch on, in these cases I had to wait for the battery to empty completely and when it could switch on again, one could notice that the clock had stopped working in the meanwhile.
At a certain point I directly got the dreaded "time-of-day-clock-stopped" screen, with consequent block of the computer.
I thought I had found the solution when I changed the clock battery and computer started work again.
However, after some time the same problems appeared and at the end the same message of "time-of-day".....

Ok so I had a problem with my M1530 when it refused boot up. (black screen upon power up; not a display/screen issue)
So I called in for a repair and I had a technician come out on 2 different occasions to try to fix it once for a motherboard and second time for CPU/RAM. Both times the problem wasn't fixed so I shipped it to Dell for a repair .....

I contacted Dell yesterday morning via chat because my laptop has started crashing when playing fallout 3/wow, again... This time I remained persistent that I did not want another defective new motherboard with a bad 8600m GPU in it, installed for me. I explained that it’s not a matter of IF the replacement will fail, but WHEN. I was persistent that I wanted a better solution than the motherboard swap. I asked to be transferred to the agent’s supervisor.
When transferred I was told that they "redesigned" the motherboard/GPU so this issue was no longer occurring. I explained to the supervisor how he must have his facts wrong because that is not true. I was eventually offered a warranty replacement. It only took an hour of being firm but polite. I was told it would take 1 week to get an order number from the supervisor and I could reference the chat log number if I had any questions.
After I got off the chat, I realized that I forgot to get the dispatch number. Today I went back into chat to get my dispatch number and asked again when I have an order number for my warranty exchange. Today I was told 2-3 weeks for the order number and 4-5+ weeks to actually get the new system. The agents explained that the "We (dell) are seeing a huge backlog in our warehouse and that is the reason we are not committing on a earlier date." I asked why I was told 1 week the day before but I was only apologized to for being miss-informed.
Currently I feel like i am trapped and dell doesn't care about me as a customer, and that is a shame. I am going to be updating this thread as I progress through this process for a couple of reasons. The main reason is I hope that this will help me keep my insanity in check when dealing with the frustrations of spending my money for my "cool" xps 1530 with 4 year complete care warranty that was almost broke more than it worked. It would often take dell 2-3 weeks to get a tech out with the correct part to fix my laptop when it had issues. The second reason it to just document in one central location this process. Finally maybe I can help pass some people’s time out there by letting reading about my story :-)
In conclusion, I am grateful that I was approved for a warranty replacement, and hope that everyone else out there who has “dealt” with dell’s bs regarding the 1530/1330 will get the same result. It just sucks the wait it looking to be about 1.5 months, lol :-)

I used to be able to run through 2- 1 hour classes on power saver with full brightness

I had a chat recently with a Dell rep and he said that basically the only way to get any sort of warranty (in Canada) is to show definitive signs of malfunction on the GPU.
Recently the left side of my computer has been incredibly hot, and annoying to lay my wrists on the palm rest areas (ironic, I know).
Anyway he told me to do the FN + power button combination to boot up and it would run the diagnostic test to determine if anything was wrong .....

I'm planning on changing the thermal compound on my M1530's CPU and GPU as my temps are getting pretty high when playing Medieval 2: Total War. I am getting high 80 degrees on both CPU and GPU.
The thing is I have never changed thermal compund before and I obviously want to get it right!
I have tried to find a tutorial, but I can't. Well I did find this but the link is dead.
I have heard about the 'grain of rice' and 'credit card' methods, but they are a bit vague

ive change the thermal paste of my m1530, before closing the lid up, i forgot to plug in the fan socket, thus leaving my laptop without the fan on. After a while, when i felt the lappy is hot, suddenly i realized i forgot to plug in the fan socket.
however, the damage has been done, according to gpu-z, my gpu temp went up to 93c, and it took 30 minutes for it to increase from 80c to 93c.

I received a replacement hard drive, but the description says it is a 250GB 5400 RPM hard drive. The hard drive I have on the system is 250 GB 7200 RPM. I also checked further specifications on the internet.
The replacement Toshiba 250GB hard drive (MK2552GSX) has 8mb buffer while the hard drive currently on the system Seagate 250 GB (ST9250421ASG ) has 16mb buffer.
Has anyone receieved a weaker hard drive as a replacement. I have to return one of them as part of the warranty service

Since I've been taking apart my M90 often. I notice that my screwdriver is not as flat as it should be and if I'm not careful. I will be stripping the screws soon. How much does a replacement set of screws cost. And is there a perfect screwdriver for the screws?

I was using my laptop as I normally would a few weeks back when I noticed that the left hand-side was sticking out a tad bit more than usual. I ignored it and now it's starting to become quite drastic.
There's a huge gap that keeps the top cover sealed with the rest of the laptop chassis. I look underneath the laptop and notice that somehow, 2 screws had disappeared!

Today I had my laptop's dvd drive replaced while i was gone to work.
I had someone watching the Dell technician while he was working on my laptop.
After I came home, my friend notified me that the technician used a power screwdriver to remove the screws from my laptop. After I inspected the laptop, I noticed one of the screws is close to getting completely stripped out!
Has anyone ever experienced this before? I don't know what to say, considering they are not even suppose to use a power drill to remove the screws at first place.

I slipped up a few times and caused hairline scratches on the underside plate of my 13" MBP when I installed my Momentus XT (which I am now returning and getting X25-M). My heart dropped when I heard these screeching noises, but it doesn't look too bad and hopefully eliminates the OCD I tend to have with electronics.

I just recently placed an order for a Studio 1737 (replacing an Inspiron E1705). It comes with a 1 year warranty.
I'm debating whether it's worth spending $200+ to upgrade to a Dell 3 year warranty or should I get a 3 year Square Trade Warranty for less than $150 (I can get one for around $120 after a coupon)?

I have a Dell XPS1330 and have a problem with it and I dont know if my laptop is still under warranty.
I searched on Dell's website with my service tag and the only thing I found was that I have a "Rapid Response Depot"? What does it mean? Does it mean that I can send my laptop to Dell to be repaired?

my question is, what's the best value with these warranties? I know I should probably be protected, but should I assume that after 1 year I'd be in the clear anyway? Also, I think the 1645 doesn't come with 2 year warranties (for some reason) so those would be out of the question.

The reseller transferred the warranty and this was evident by tech support provided in the first few months of ownership. I recently contacted Dell due to my Nvidia Geforce 8800M graphics card not being disabled by Windows. I assume I have a physical problem with my card..
Dell now says I do not have a warranty, that it was never transferred. I pointed out the early tech support and the fact that I know for a fact the warranty was transferred by the reseller. Dell tells me to recontact the reseller and again have the warranty transferred. The reseller is out of business..
Am I up a creek without a paddle or is Dell sandbagging due to the onslaught of video problems with XPS M1730's..

To keep is short I was trying to extend the warrant for my xps m1530.The online systems doesn’t seem to be working after hitting purchase options the page just keeps reloading with Firefox or IE so it’s off to the phone.
My first call I get a quote of $169 for a 1 year or $255 plus a $50 rebate for 2 years. Can you imagine I get disconnected? I call back now I get a quote of $179 for a one year and $254 with no rebate available for 2 years. I ask to speak to a supervisor and of course get disconnect again.
Now I try the chat system here is what I got from them.
05/27/2010 02:33:26PMAgent (E&A_RR_Rep_Rick): "for one year, it would be $279, and for two years it's $418.69"
05/27/2010 02:33:48PMAgent (E&A_RR_Rep_Rick): "i could offer a $75 giftcard on either one, but that's the only price i have"
While I’m chatting a supervisor calls me and we agree on a deal for $254 for 2 years. I didn’t have a credit card with me so said she would call me at 1pm to make the purchase. She calls gets all the information goes off to process it. Comes back no saying it would be $279 for 1 and $418 for 2 with no gift card available.
I asked to speak to her supervisor and of course disconnected again if you can imagine that. Well thanks for letting me vent.Dell has just lost a long time customer.
