Dell XPS 13 :: Flashing Light When Sleeping - Why Does It Stop
May 27, 2012
When I put my Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook to sleep either with the power button, or closing the lid, the light on the front of the until will flash. I haven't timed it exactly, but it flashes for several minutes, but eventually stops flashing. When I wake it up from sleep, it seems about the same whether or not the light was flashing.
Why the light eventually stops flashing and what it means? It isn't because the battery died, and it isn't going into Hibernate because this laptop doesn't have that option.
Have a question for you. Last night I had my laptop connected up to the ECM of my car (for diagnostics purposes) and went for a drive with it connected to the ECM. No Problem. Got back from the trip and the battery was down to 4% so I promptly shut it down (after turning the car off).
I plugged the charger in and the battery is back up to 100% but for some reason the orange flashing battery light on the laptop keeps flashing. I have taken the power pack out and the battery is ok, works as per normal
My Dell XPS M140 has a power light on the bezel that blinks orange very rapidly. This usually happens when I leave the charger on the wall over night or for long periods of time.
However, when I take the battery out and push the button the battery itself, there are 5 green lights, so I assume all is fine, but what is with the orange flashing light on the bezel?
I have a N5010 Inspiron. My battery has been down to a few minutes for a yr or two. I keep my laptop plugged in always unless traveling.
Today, my battery light started flashing. Amber for times then white then repeats. Since I was plugged in I was perplexed. I looked on my screen and it showed 100 percent battery meaning I am plugged in.
Then I turned my computer completely off. THE LIGHT KEPT FLASHING. Now it is getting spooky. I unplug the power supply from the back of the computer and the light went off.
Hours later I plugged everything back in. Started the computer and the light started again. Since it is no warning for anything other than the battery,
I tried unplugging while computer was on. Still flashing.
I turned off. Took battery out and put back in. Still Flashing.
While off AND battery out I plugged in and no flashing
Put batter back in....plugged in and flashing resumed.
when I try to start my Inspiron 15 the battery light will flash and then wait for a few seconds and then flashes again. I put a post tester and it says no codes and restarts and flashes again no codes.
I have been having problems getting my laptop to boot. I've performed a laundry list of repair options and nothing has worked. As of this moment, I've managed to narrow the query down to the flashing LED light code FLASHING Num Lock-SOLID Caps Lock-Solid Scroll Lock. I've done some further research and I've only managed to get sketchy information at best. It is saying that the problem has something to do with the processor or the system dock--if that information is reliable. I've had contradicting answers on that. I've reseated the processor several times, even switching the processor with a virtually identical processor from my WORKING Inspiron 1501 with no change. And just to confirm that the processor initially seated in the 1526 is working, I have put it in the 1501 and it works. I've swapped compatible components between both machines and everything has worked after being seated in the 1501.
I recently purchased DELL N5010 INSPIRON, but now it give one problem. It is not run without AC power. and when i point the battery through mouse it show
"17% available (Plugged in, Not Charging).
And battry light flashing 4 times with orange light after a second. It is the bug or any hardware problem, because the bettery may be only 2 month old...
I was using my laptop today, and the battery light just randomly started blinking red, even though the battery still had 33% left. So I plugged it in, and the light still kept flashing and when I held my mouse over the battery icon, it said that it was plugged in but not charging. Does this mean that the battery is toast?
I've got an Acer Aspire 5313 and I've never had any problems with it.
Last night it shut itself down to install updates when I was out of the room, so I left it off and didn't notice anything wrong. But today when I went to power it up I noticed that the battery light was flashing orange/amber while the power light was a solid orange and there was no indicator that it was plugged in.
If I unplug it and power it up the light stays a solid green, like normal, and I've got an almost full charge, but the instant I plug it in the light starts flashing amber/orange again and it doesn't seem to recognise that I've plugged the cord in.
I've tried a bunch of different 'solutions' that I've been able to find but none of them worked. I haven't downloaded anything in a while and I don't go anywhere near BIOS, since I've got no idea what I'm doing. I know very little about computers though, so there were some 'solutions' that I've not tried yet.
I use this for school, so it's used frequently for hours at a time. If it's simply a new power cord for it, which is what I first thought it might be, that's fine. But the green light on the power supply turns on normally, so I'm not sure that that's the problem.
What does a Quickly flashing yellow/orange battery light mean?
I bought a replacement battery pcga-BP2E for my sony vaio vgn 417M.It ran off the battery and showed it was charging but % didn't go up. Every time I connect the power cable the battery light flashes rapidly and I can't find in any manual what it means.
Using my original working battery the battery light flashes slowly as it should and the laptop works ok.
10 days and I am still waiting for a relpy from the supplier atleast I started my complaint through paypal.
Anything I do on this machine, the HD lights barley goes out. It just keeps flashing. I think it is what slowing my machine down. When i am playing a game, I get laggy fps and what not and I think it is the HD slowing it downs. Even when the machine is doing nothing the HD light is solid. I ran the HP HD tests and it found no issues. My "File searching index" for vista is turned off. I have enable write chaching and enable advance proformance enabled. Any ideas? I am getting pissed off with this becasue it really laggs my system down. It is a decent system when it works right..
I am using vostro 3450. Today I got a problem. Suddenly the flash light my webcam is stop working. But the webcam is still running. What can i do for it?
I'm currently having a problem with my Vostro 3460. Once in a while, when I plug in the AC Adapter to my laptop, it'll make 2 beeps sound and show an error about battery is unrecognized, the battery light in the front panel will flash between amber and white. I have tried to reseat the battery several times but it's not working. Below are some pictures I took when this happened:
I also recorded how the battery light looks like when this happened here: [URL] ...
My Inspiron 1520 just recently started blinking a red battery light. It just keeps blinking. Theres no stop to it... even if i re-insert the battery it shows the blinking red light and it keeps blinking steadily. Also when checking with quickset it doesnt recognize any battery at all. When i remove the ac adapter my pc just shuts off and wont run until plugged in. I read in the manual and it told me to contact dell if it happened.
I dont know if its defected or something? My warranty is pretty much dead... and I've always left the computer plugged on.. dont know if that affects the battery. Will I have to replace my battery, if it runs out or is defected? I checked and its $135 bucks for a new battery....
I bought a new ProBook 4530s less than 2 weeks ago. It is running Windows 7 64 bit. I was using it today on battery power when it shut down unexpectedly. Apparently the battery was low. I was listening to music and did not hear any low battery warning. Certainly, there was no popup message. I plugged in the charger and restarted the computer. Now I see an icon on the bottom right of the screen that apparently means No Battery is Detected.
The yellow light on the left side of the laptop next to the power cord is flashing. I did some research online and tried removing and replacing the battery several times. No change. Originally, I was unable to start the computer from the battery at all. Now I find that I have enough power that I can start from the battery, so it must be getting some power in spite of the icon. I have now restarted several times, plugged in and on battery. I always get the No Battery message and the flashing yellow light.
I have looked at Device Manager, and it says that the battery is fine.
I have a HP Pavilion M6-1045DX laptop and I recently tried to plug it into a display through the Analog RGB and I saw a spark and the laptop shut off. During that time I ran the laptop straight from the AC adapter without a battery because I don't really use it.So the laptop shut off and I tried turning it back on and nothing happened. The charge indicator light turned off even though it was still plugged in. I thought maybe the power adapter stopped working or something but I tested it with a voltmeter and there was still power in it.
So I decided to put the battery in and the laptop was able to turn on, but after a while, this one area that i never felt heat there before was really hot and later smelled like something was burning. But anyway, when it booted up, the screen resolution was really low and was on maximum brightness. When the laptop finished booting, it randomly started installing drivers (such as the WLAN and intel rapid storage) and yeah. Sound doesn't work either. I tried to plug the laptop back in and the battery won't charge.I turned it off and took out the battery and tried running it off from the AC adapter only but the power light was blinking constantly and when I press it, the WiFi button light (F12) turned on for a second and back off. I also hear this high frequency noise that I never heard before somewhere in the laptop.
I have an Acer aspire ES1-512-C5YW that has a flashing red light when turned on. The battery appears to be fully charged. What do I need to do to stop this ....
One of my users brought me this issue the other day. He is using a Latitude D830 laptop with a D/port docking station. With or without the laptop docked, The power button on the docking station flashes Orange and Green when powered. I've swapped power bricks for the dock. The laptop still seems to charge while being docked. After swapping the dock, the new dock is fine.
What might be causing it? Is the dock dead? Could it be a failed port on the docking station?
I'm trying to fix my fathers laptop so he won't have to spend money on a new one. Here's the problem:
When I press the power button to boot the laptop it does not boot, it just flashes the power light(s) on and off at maybe 1 flash per second. I've tried removing the RAM-sticks one and one, removing the HDD, removing the battery and removing the DVD reader (not all at the same time, of course). None of those helped, it still did the same thing.
Then I tried to blind flash the bios from a CD, the laptop comes on with the fan at full blast, the DVD reader comes on and it stays on, but it never finishes and powers off.
I got my XPS 3 days ago and I've had the lingering issue of the computer not wanting to wake from sleep when I try to open the laptop again. The keyboard and power button lights up like it's working, but the screen never comes back on and I have to restart the computer.
When I need to take my laptop to class, I always close the lid of the laptop, wait for the fans to turn off, unplug the magsafe and put in in my backpack.
When i get my laptop from my bag, the computer is vibrating (its on) and its burning.
I just got the Elitebook 850 G1 and I've put all the settings to sleep when I close the lid and wake up when I open it. I've checked both settings in windows and in the BIOS and it's all good but when I actually do it, it doesn't wake up but restarts the computer instead. So when I've been typing away on Word, I constantly save it but it doesn't go back to where I left it. I thought it was one of the graphics drivers at first, because it has dual graphics, intel and ati. It's had some issues with the ATI but I think I've fixed it. I'm running windows 8.1 Pro.
I tried changing the settings to hibernate instead and what it gave me was a BSOD. Video_dxgkrnl_fatal_error. i remember it did that the first time i tried to do it before when it was on sleep mode.
I have a new Inspiron 7000 series that I'm setting up. I have a restore app running to download a sizable amount of data from my old backup to this new computer.
Although I have the laptop plugged in and told it to NEVER sleep when plugged in - and I adjusted the hard drive (advanced power management) to stay awake for 120 minutes, it still seems to be going to sleep after a short (less than 1 hour period of time).
I have to hit the power button and wait for the screen saver, then I swipe it out of the way and must login to my laptop. The restore application stops running when it goes into this sleep mode.
Frustrating as my settings all seem to imply the system should stay awake.
after installing every software i will need on my notebook, i closed it (sleeping) and put it in my backpack. i only needed it again after 2 days. when i touched the bag it was already hot in the outside, i opened it, and my Lenovo was burning... i turned my computer on, the battery went down to 13% from 100% (2 days ago), as it was sleeping, i would have suggested it uses roughly 10-15% in 2 days.
my questions are: 1. is the heating thing normal while sleeping? what could have caused the problem? 2. is it possible that some parts of the computer got damaged in such a hot atmosphere? (note that i kept it in a closed bag)
possible solution to question 1: i ran a command prompts, typed in the code that tells me what is allowed to wake my computer. noticed the external Logitec mouse and that Intel giganet networks were allowed, so i disabled both. it was probably the mouse as it was in the same bag, i guess it was moving in the bag and waking the computer?
Btw my mobo, cpu, memory i believe were all replaced last time i took it in with this issue... Still getting it consistently:

Black Screen: [URL] ...
I thought before maybe its Bluetooth related as sometimes when screen would turn black and then come back, I would get a 'Bluetooth Device Not Discoverable'. So turned off Bluetooth in the BIOS, but still having display/sleep issues.
I removed hte Lenovo Power Manager/PM Driver, and turned off sleeping in the Windows power settings (in every setting including if Low Battery Action).
I have a Latitude E6510 that will not start. When pressing the power button, the power light goes on for about 5 seconds and then turns off. I also notice the battery light flashes a few times when re-connecting the AC adapter.
Removed the battery, held in the power button 30 seconds, but still not working.
We have had this laptop about 6 months. About a month ago, it exhibited this problem. After talking to Dell Support, they recommended a system board replacement. The laptop was sent in and the board was replaced. When I got it back and tried to start it for the first time, it did the same thing. I then pressed the Latitude "ON" button, and the laptop started.
Now it is doing the same thing, and I find it hard to believe that another system board is bad. I am suspicious about this "ON" feature, that maybe the laptop is "stuck" or something trying to get into the "ON" mode. Or maybe it is just trying to get into "ON" mode.
I am not sure what the "ON" feature does, but I have noticed a few other posts on the internet of users having the exact same problem. Again--I find it hard to believe a second system board could be bad.
When you open the machine to boot, I must open in the corner from 0-40 degrees. I have to slid hand to press the Power button, the computer boots normally into Windows 7. Then:
- When I open angle greater than 40 degrees (40-180 degrees), the machine switches to sleeping. - When closed off the screen in less than 40 degree angle, the machine is turned on (switch to normal working mode)
I have had my xps 15z just nearly two years (out of warranty) an today it won't turn on. The battery light does not light up and neither does the light to indicate if it is charging, when I press the on button nothing at all happens. The green light on the plug transformer is on until you plug it into the laptop when it immediately deilluminates. I am trying to establish if this is an issue with the plug or the laptop hardware, I could not find a solution and I only have my phone to look on now my laptop has died.
Moreover I am very annoyed with the quality of this range topping machine, when it first came the hard drive had to be replaced, the dell rep who fixed it managed to break the battery indicator lights which I had to take it apart to fix. When you consider the wireless issues, the focus losing problems which made it impossible to type until I found which dell programme to uninstall to fix and the crackling speaker issue which I still not found a solution for, this is not good enough.
My first month with this brand new notebook was problems it gave me a blue screen and shut down on me. I thought it was normal being that it was my very first notebook. My hp pavilion notebook is only 3 years old but it now it has a blinking caps light and a orange light on the wireless key. I have tried to hard reset it but nothing works. I was use to it shutting down on me and restarting again but this time it would not come back on. I call Hp tech and now I'm being told this computer is obsolete and can't be fixed.
however it didnt have the inaccesible boot device i was told last time this happened that the hard drives had come out of sync and that the comp was fried :| so PC world gave me a replacement.....
anyway i booted it up and got this now im running a Dell XPS M1730 with Vista SP1 however
when i press the Dell Media key which is locatewd next to the power button just over the Caps, num and scroll lock indicators it sometimes boots and sometimes dosent i dont wanna have to go back to PC world again as there all idiots and arnt
