Dell XPS 15Z :: Keeps Spitting Out Discs
Jan 28, 2013
I bought this dell xps 15z in 2011. I have been trying to get it to accept discs, but it will not. It will take the disc in, makes a noise like its loading, but then spits it right out>

I'm looking at buying a Dell. I already have an old Dell machine.
If I buy the Dell it will come with Vista Home Basic. Can I use my old Dell recovery discs to downgrade the laptop to XP Home?
Will there be any issues with drivers, etc?

When I did a clean install of Vista on my computer, I must have wiped out the program that plays the Blu-ray discs, because it doesn't do anything when I put a disc in. Is there a way I can download this program again, or does anyone recommend another program to use instead?

I have a Dell n5110 laptop and since I have made a clean install of windows, dvd(Matshita DVD+-RW UJ8B1) wont work. It was working perfectly before. I have checked everything but all seems to be OK. Fix It wont find anything nor Dell Support Center. Device Manager also says I have the latest driver with no problems.

My SXPS 1645 came with Windows 7 Home Premium, but I wiped the drive and installed Windows 7 Ultimate off of MSDN. What I'd like to do is use the Home Premium installation for my parents' admittedly ancient Dell Dimension 2400.
That system needs to be rescued from the gates of hell anyway, so rather than reinstall Windows XP, I figured it'd be worth seeing how well 7 will run ...

The DVD RW Drive in my XPS will not accept blank CD-R discs...I have not tried other formats eg. DVD-R. I ran the Dell self-inspection test. All passed except those for this drive. The message reported was 'unsupported'. I reran the same test and obtained the same result.

I've got two mid-2011 Inspiron 15R-N5110. One has an Intel i3 and integrated graphics while the other has an Intel i7 with discrete graphics. I had the i7 first and got it without a hard drive. I installed Windows 7 from a Digital River ISO and all is well. I then purchased the one with the i3. It had its original hard drive and I made recovery media using the DataSafe Local Backup utility. Since both laptops are very closely related, is it possible to use the recovery media created from the i3's hard drive to restore the one with the i7? If successful, will this recreate a recovery partition on the target hard drive.

when i put my recovery discs in, i cant sem how to use them.
i cant run program or anything, i cant seem how to use them.
for some reason i can only get bluray discs to run on the acer arcade thing and windows media centre(which just turns acer arcade and plays it through that)
iv tried vlc player and windows media player 1 and neither work
also my partitions are 140gb each.
im guessing the other is for storeing stuff and backups.
but how can i make it so i have like 250gb for the first partition and only 30-40gb for the second one?

I have SR490PBB bought from CDW last week and its recovery partition that contain Window XP has been deleted. Of course, I didn't create my discs as I was stupid. I tried to get support from Sony and it is not covered under warranty and they have hard time getting Recovery Discs as they said it new model.
If any of you have VGN-SR490PBB, help me get recovery discs. I think it will work for me too. I really need and want Window XP.

I read the clean install without activation, but must have missed something along the way. Is there a different type of upgrade disc for XP to Vista than upgrading from Vista to different versions of Vista? I want to make sure I am looking at the proper disc before purchasing. There are several on eBay, all look to be the same type of disc. My goal is to do the clean install, and if possible go from 32 to 64 bit now that I have 4 GB of ram and a t9300 to install.

I bought the above laptop over a year ago with Vista Home Premium installed, with the usual partition including the recovery software. Did I make my recovery discs? No, I did not and subsequently had a hard drive failure that resulted in the partition being lost too. I managed to put an old copy of XP on which has been fine upto now. I just bought an xbox and want to put vista on my computer so I can use the Windows media centre.
Is there any other way I can get the recovery software without using Acer directly?

I tried to burn recovery discs for my new rig with Sony brand DVD+Rs, and after gathering info, writing, and finally checking, it tells me it's unsuccessful (this is after burning disc 1 of 2). I've tried a few times with the same result. Anyone know what the deal is here? Do I need a special high quality disc or could it be something else?

My mom's laptop failed over a week ago. It wouldn't get past repairing disc errors, even if left alone for 8+ hours. I tried the windows Reset option from the advanced repair menu (Originally came with Windows 8). It started the reset process, but since it was going extremely slow, and I had to work the next day, I left it to go over night. I'm not sure what happened, but it wouldn't even let me get to the advanced options menu anymore. So I ordered the recovery discs from HP.
Those came on Friday, and I have been working with changing different settings in the BIOS, yet I still can't get the notebook to boot from the 1st cd. It says "Push any key to boot from CD/DVD" which I then hit enter, and it just black screens for up to 45 minutes. I'm not ure how the BIOS needs to be set up, and I'm not sure why it would give me that message, then not boot. When i hit F11 during startup, It shows the HP Logo for a while, then black screens for about 20 minutes, then I get an error page saying there is a necessary disc or device missing. I have disconnected and reconnected the hard drive, reseated the RAM.

One of my users has a Vaio SR and is trying to create recovery discs (DVDs) using Sony's tool. Sony's application fails at 24% every time with the following error:
"The disc could not be created.: Missing source folder or files."
It's running Vista and is pretty new, although they repartitioned the drive recently have installed a lot of additional software and may have uninstalled some Sony software. I'm thinking these could be the cause.
If not, any recommendations for third party software that provide similar functionality (full system backup images to disc)?

I have a sony laptop - VGN-660N - every time I boot from the recovery DVD I get the following error:
"Cannot use this recovery disc for this computer. Confirm the model type"
I have the right discs per the label on the discs (discs are labeled for VGN-600 Series), which I purchased directly from Sony. I contacted Sony, who was worthless on the matter.

any HPDV range of laptop that are installed with 64bit Vista on the AMD version ?
Secondly does anyone know the cost of a Vista 64bit recovery disc for the AMD processor TL-58 1.9Ghz laptop and if so where to buy it from as I know one exists for the Intel version ?
Ive tried HP website & they weren't very helpful.
Ive also tried a retail version of Vista 64 + 32 bit,but some of the drivers are missing & cant be found, resulting in a half usable laptop.
There has to be an HPDV laptop model that comes with this software pre-installed.
Otherwise HP have seen to it that Im stuck with out being able to upgrade.
