this is the second time i had a "made for dell" external dvd drive fail for my mini 9. i advise that everyone avoid this option.
dell wont give support for it and the company that sells it to dell is near impossible to get a hold of for product support.
I have a HP 15 Notebook PC with no dvd drive recently I was sent the system recovery cds from HP. I dont have an external dvd drive. What i do have is a Toshiba Satelight laptop with Widows 7 and a good dvd drive. Also I have a 500 GB external hard drive. I was thinking maybe I could copy the disks onto the external harddrive with the Toshiba dvd drive. Then attach the external hard drive to my HP 15 Notebook by usb port and install Hp recovey disks from the external hard drive.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a T420 that I'm using with a Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W 433710U docking station. I'm trying to connect to two external monitors (both HP 1965's) using the DVI and VGA outputs on the docking station. From the VGA output, I'm running a VGA (M) to DVI (M) into my monitor. I can only get either the DVI or VGA outputted monitors to work by themselves, but not together. When I connect both external displays, it will switch off one of the external monitors (the first one connected). Both are verified working as external monitors with the T420, just not at the same time. When using the DVI output, I can get dual monitors to work using the ThinkPad display as one monitor and the DVI-connected external monitor as the second. Is there a way to connect to two external monitors from a T420 with a Mini Dock Series 3 - 90W 433710U docking station? Or do you a multi-monitor adapater, such as an Cirago HDX3DV01 to do that?

I have a Vostro 13 with a hard drive ribbon cable problem that I now run with a Linux distro from a USB stick. The question is this: The GP60N External DVD drive has two USB connections (one of which I assume is primarily for extra power), but the laptop only has two USB ports, one of which is taken up by the OS stick - can I power one of the USBs on the DVD drive with an external power source? Or am I better off getting a powered hub and using that for the extra juice?
And, yes, I have replaced the ribbon cable. The new one failed after a day or two.
i have a question to all the mini 9 owners with the 8gb ssd harddrive
how much gb do you get when you receive your computer from the factory? (nothing installed), does the os and pre-installed software takes a lot of space?
i am going to get a 8gb one, but i don't know if it would be too small..
i read the review, you can upgrade the ssd harddrive to a larger one in the future, anyone know how big does it support? and how to installed xp on there?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI recently had my CD/dvdrw drive crash. It plays DVDs but not CDs and I need the CD portion to work.
Unfortunately I think I'm going to order one from dell and its going to take 5 business days (7 days cause of the weekend) and I need to boot up an operating system via CD for work.
My bios says that it can be started from a USB storage device, but my external CD drive doesn't even seem like its powered up when I restart.
In my bios, I have the boot option set to USB storage device and have it set as priority over any other boot option. I just paid for this external drive today, and things are still looking grim.
Does anyone have an external drive connected via esata, ideally to a XPS 1645 but if not any other XPS 16 will do, and if so what sort of transfer speeds do you get?
I ask as I need to sort out some external storage and I was all set to get a small cheap NAS such as a Netgear Readynas Duo but from the reading I've done the transfer speeds seem pretty low even when using a gigabit network (around 24 MB/s reading and less than that writing)
I am considering a 24" monitor which I need t share as a second on my 1710, as well as the primary on my gaming rig (2X8800GTX SLI).
I want to drive it @ 1920*1200. I don�t want to use the VGA connector for one of the machines, when I do resolution drops to a max of around 1600*1100. So, I am looking at some of the monitors that have DVI and HDMI connectors. The thought was to connect one of the machines via HDMI with a special cable like one from bluejean cable, and use the other straight through, and choose a monitor with an easy one touch toggle between the two.
I read some horror stories that the HDMI link via a DVI-HDMI cable isn't optimal, and someitmes has its own resolution or sync limits. Does anyone know about this?
My other choice is a cheapo DVI switch, but it would be cool just to hit the input button.
I bought my first laptop--an inspirin 17R. I would think in this day and age---being able to boot from USB would be a gimme!
I have a bootable Toshiba Canvio external drive that I have images for restoration stored on. I know you can boot from a dvd drive with a bootable DVD (which I did create) But---if the drive itself is bootable---why does the BIOS not have that option?
What does one have to do in this day to boot from USB?
I just booted into the BIOS of my Inspiron 15 3531 model and I realize that the only boot option it allows me to use is from the hard drive.......that's it. No external usb, no lan option (it doesn't have an ethernet port, so I understand that), nothing.....Why would setup a BIOS like this? How to boot this system from a USB or external cd drive...

View 10 Replies View Relatedso I've been tinkering with the e6400 that I bought off Dell Outlet the other day. I've noticed that when I start or restart my computer with an external drive plugged in (whether it be an actual drive or a flash drive)
the Dell will hang at the Intel Matrix Management screen, and give no indication of anything happening. What I usually have to do then is to turn off the laptop and unplug whatever drive was there.
Any ideas why this happens, and if I can change it somehow? I've seen people mention changing the BIOS to ACHI instead, but I'm not sure if that's a related issue.
i recently bought a vantex nexstar 3 external hard drive with the option of usb and e-sata. The problem i am having is with e-sata. The e-sata is the prefered method of exchanging information dur to its speed rather than usb.
I would like to know from the community in large if there is anyone who has experienced these problems or has connected an external to their m4400 laptop.
The external laptop has a seagate 7200 rpm FFS(free fall sensor) inside.
The problems:
1) When connecting the exHD to the laptop for the first time the HD spins (i can feel it) but then stops. Windows does not pick it up as well as Intel Matrix Storage manager. Only when i restart the laptop still with the exHD connect does windows pick it up as well as Intel Matrix Storage manager.
I did in both cases check to see if the exHD needs more power and it is sufficient.
2)Another issue is that i have windows reporting to me that an external hard drive has been connect to my system even though i havn't plugged it in .....
I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. I just reinstalled XP earlier today and now everything is like new again. Unfortunately, my files and movies from my external hardrive are taking too long to transfer onto my computer.
I did one movie at a time and it's taking like 35 minutes to transfer, when before it only took 3 minutes to transfer. Anyone know why this is happening

However, the Acer won't power -- through just the USB hookup to the external drive -- the SONY drive without the SONY power adaptor.
I would like for my Acer and external drive truly to operate off battery power in those cases where I need to do so.
Is there some type of external battery that could power the SONY external drive for its use with my Acer Aspire One?
ACER 2423 confirmed dead. The hard drive should have recoverable files and I want to access them. I put the drive into a USB external enclosure and my desktop can see the drive and its partitions. It will not however read any files. Does ACER have a software code or something that prevents this?

The unit has 2x2TB drives in it, and I have set it to mirror one drive to the other - so I have 2TB of useable space.
1. I always tend to use FAT32 in case I ever want to connect a Windows machine to use it, which isnt very often TBH - but at least I know I can if need be. I dont save any files larger then 4GB onto the drive. Should I stick with FAT32 or move over to HFS+ ? Are there any other benefits to HFS+ over FAT32 other then larger file sizes etc?
2. Is Firewire 800 Hot Swappable - or do I need to connect the drive with my MBP off, then boot up?
can I get any external hard drive for my Macbook? Because I see ads for external hard drives for Macs, as if they're specially designed and made for Macs. Is that legit, or can I buy any one I want?
And while we're on the subject - any suggestions as to which one is the best (fastest, most reliable, etc.)?

I have the Beats Special Edition 15-p058n and my USB 3.0 WD My Passport which works fine on 3.0 Windows 7 is connecting and disconnecting continually every 10 seconds or so.
I have checked the internet and found a lot of similar issues so could be a combination of the hardware and Windows 8.1?
I have tried to turn off the power save setting for the usb root hubs in device manager to see if it is the extra power that the usb 3 gives, but this has not worked.
I have OKR working for me beautifully. However, when I choose "System Recovery", it only presents me with selecting from C: or D: (partitions on the only internal HDD). It does not let me choose backups that it itself created on my external USB HDD ( F: ).
How do I tell OKR to select a backup that it created on an external USB HDD?

Trying to install OS with external CD/DVD drive to no avail. Have done everything possible including:
-tried 3 different externals drives
-attempted BIOS BOOT ORDER: BOOT FROM CD/DVD and tried REMOVABLE DEVICE setting
-attemped 'esc' one time BOOT ORDER at startup...attempted both CD/DVD and REMOVABLE DEVICE
System doesnt recognize EXTERNAL CD/DVD in BIOS....only in WINDOWS..after machine fully starts up. Looked for any kind of UPDATE for DRIVERS OR BIOS on SONY SUPPORT for this model...there is none.
I dont have my Time Capsule just yet, and am looking to set up Time Machine to an external USB HDD.
If I dont have the external drive plugged in, does it just skip the scheduled backup its missed?
Can I just create the initial full backup, then stop the scheduled backups - so only have it incrementally backup when I manually run it?
Is it possible to split my external hard disk into two partition? The drive is originally NTFS.. but I'm looking to split it so that the second partition is Mac OS compatible.
My plan is to use Partition Manager in Windows so that I can split the drive without having to lose data. Then plug it back into Mac OSX so that I can format the new partition to a Mac compatible format.
