Dell :: XPS M1530, A History Of Heat

Feb 4, 2009

I really should be writing my english essay instead, but after all this time, I'm better at writing forum posts about my laptop's massive heating issues.

On a good day, my 4 month old XPS M1530 32bitVista Home Premium laptop will run at about 65 degrees celcius. From what I've read, this is a normal temperature for the laptop.

Note that my fan used to run, but only does sporadically now. I don't know what triggers it on or off .....

I just brought a E6400 and wanted to see why it was returned and how many previous there were.

Dell :: M1330: A Brief History Of BIOS Revisions

Nov 25, 2008

"A05 is still the best, long live A05!"

Just kidding - clearly anyone with a new CPU or a non Cu-modded 8400M GS or with the "won't eject my Dawn-of-the-Dead DVD" syndrome needs A12+... .

Speaking of which, I've compiled a [rough] list of "known" changes & associates threads:

A15 - Jan '09 (aka Boot-up and/or Fan speed up and/or Down revision...)
1. Enhance Fn+F8 function
x. Support for 8GB memory is... back! (Thx 2 Sesshomaru)

Note that they also added the following: "Please update VGA driver to version A10*(Vista 32bits)/ A05(Vista 64bits) Or later for optimal performance of system"
Clearly this BIOS revision is aimed at a problem with switching between LCD &/or an externally attached monitor (and I doubt that there has been any tweaking done to either boot-up or Fan speeds... ).
*"A10/A05" represents nVidia 176.44 (23 Oct. 2008) and Intel 7.14.10.1409 (7 Jan. 2009) driver versions. My guess is this issue is only with the Intel Integrated graphics.

A14 - Nov '08 (aka hound-dog revision)
1. Added enhancement for Wifi sniffer function.

A13 - Oct '08 (aka removed-from-the-official-list revision)
1. Added support for new versions of Intel CPUs.
2. Added support for 8GB memory.

A12 - Jul '08 (aka speed-up-the-fan-even-more revision)
1. Added enhancement for thermal control.
2. Update GM965 Graphics VBIOS from 1466 to 1588.
3. Update Intel CPU family name.

A11 - Jun '08 (aka speed-up-the-fan revision)
1. Added enhancement for thermal control.

A10 - May '08 (aka the Killa revision / eject-the-disc-already revison)
1. Improve compatibility with Dell Wireless 1390 & 1490 Dell WLAN.
2. Improve system performance on Resume from S3 with Driver Verifier enabled.
3. Added enhancement for optical drives.

A09 - Feb '08 (aka Penryn revision)
1. Updated Intel uCode.
2. Added support for New optical drives.
3. Support new CPUs.
4. Added enhancement for thermal control.
5. Added enhancement for MediaDirect control.

A08 - ? (aka never saw the light of day revision)
1. ah... huh?

A07 - Jan '08 (aka no one really knows... or cares revision)
1. Added enhancement for thermal control.
2. Update GM965 Graphics VBIOS from 1466 to 1588.
3. Update Intel CPU family name.

A06 - Sep '07 (aka battery-eating revision)
1. Enhance the function of the media eject button more stable in multi-CD/DVD installation.
2. Update the nVidia video BIOS to 60.86.45.00.40.

A05 ~ Aug '07 (aka top secret revision)
1. they removed it from their ftp sites before I could jot down the updates...

A02 - Jul '07 (aka VIPs-only revision)
1. Made the sound more stable when close the lid during audio playback.
2. Support the newer version of the Intel processor.

To be updated as necessary.

I'm wondering if I am the only one, but I had 2 SXPS16, an original and a replacement,

both were shipped with A08 bios, both seemed pretty hot to the touch like everyone talked about (still not unbearable, just a little uncomfortable) but this new one that was shipped with A10 bios seems way more manageable,

so manageable i don't even think about heat anymore, in fact it has been on my lap for the past hour and a half and no more hot than my 3 year old toshiba

Dell :: Keyboard And Keys I1564 And Other Models

Feb 5, 2010

Dell, is it possible to configure 1564 with a different keyboard? I even prefer the 1545 raised keyboard.

It's more old school (bb guy said it would collect dust under keys more), but it's easier to use. Does anyone know if the insp15z has a keyboard with raised keys?

Anyone else find the big flat keys harder to use? Is there some advantage to these, thus Dell made the change? I wasn't wild about the Sony chicklet style either. Lenova seemed easiest to me of the ones I tested in BB.

Acer :: MXM Models And Cards

Jul 4, 2009

you've probably heard it told to you time and time and time again, that there is no way to upgrade a dedicated GPU on a notebook.

But as an Acer owner, you may very well be among the lucky few who CAN upgrade their GPU, since Acer has used the MXM standard on its notebooks for quite some time now.

(For a primer on what MXM is, go have a look at the best resource online for MXM.)

But if your system came with any Intel GMA, it cannot be upgraded. NO EXCEPTIONS.

This topic will list which notebooks are CONFIRMED to be MXM-capable, as well as what slot they have, and what cards they were originally sold with (consider those safe upgrades). Any successful new-card upgrades will be linked to alongside the model.

A later post will document all the MXM cards that Acer has issued - although it's possible to use cards from other vendors, it's safest and more likely to be compatible if you stick with an Acer issue.............................

Sony :: Downgrading To XP And Brightness Settings For Newer Models

Mar 25, 2009

I've been busy downgrading my FW31ZJ (european model) to windows XP SP3.

I have found and installed the drivers for all components and things went smoothly, up until the point where I wanted to get my Fn-keys working.

This is where I got stuck initially and after much forum lurking I found the right Sony utilities to install, the order to install them in and so on (it is all on this forum).

Basicly you need the following components for your machine.

- Sony Firmware Extension Parser driver
- Sony Programmable I/O Controller driver
- Sony Shared Library
- Sony Utility DLL
- Sony Utility Settings
- Vaio Event Service

You also might have to copy the VESConfig.ini from the original Vista install.

I read here that for most this has worked well and offered full fn-keys functionality under XP. Unfortunately I'm not of you...

HP/Compaq :: HP Software Support For "older" Models

Jan 15, 2010

I have a DV5 1010tx, just over 12 months old. While I appreciate this is now considered an old model, I have found the support from HP in providing updates to drivers & software to be appalling. While I'm happy to locate newer versions myself, I'm sure there are many who haven't the experience to do this. For example, the video drivers provided for Win7 are from 2008, and interestingly are not compatible with HP Media DVD for playing BluRay.

Is this simply laziness on part of HP? I don't expect support for my product forever, but at least 2 or 3 years is reasonable.

Dell :: How To Switch Your Inspiron 9300 WUXGA LCD Into An Inspiron 9400P

Aug 1, 2007

Guide to Switching your Inspiron 9300/M170 WUXGA into the Inspiron 9400/M1710:

You can't simply replace the display screens. The instructions below must be followed for your screen to work properly.

Required Materials:
- Small Phillips (I used #0 Phillips)
- Either 2 monitors (9400 and 9300) or part #YPNL-N017B (Google the # to buy it).

Step 1: Remove the display assembly. Dell has an excellent guide for this on their website.
[url] Click on Display)

Step 2: Remove the LCD Bezel (the gray trim around the screen). This requires removing the screws under the circular pads. I used a small flathead to pry open the bezel.

Step 3: Remove the 8 screws around the sides of the LCD. This will make it so your screen can be taken out. Do not worry about any screws on the top, they are for other things.

Step 4: At the bottom of the screen, there is a green circuit board. On the left side, you will see a screw holding the wire down. Remove this.

Step 5: Remove the LCD screen from the case.

Step 6: Look at the bottom circuit board again. This is the board we need to swap! Disconnect the 2 connections on the board. There should be on on the bottom and one on the side that is white.

Step 7: There will be 3 silver screws holding the circuit to the screen. Remove these screws. Note: This requires a very small phillips. I used a #0 Phillips to do the trick.

Step 8: Repeat steps 1-7 for your other monitor OR if you don't have another monitor...you will need to buy an inverter chip. The mfg # is YPNL-N017B. If you google that number, you should find a bunch of sites willing to sell it.

Step 9: Simply swap the bottom circuit boards between monitors or insert the new one that you bought.

Step 10: Follow steps 1-7 in reverse to reconnect everything back up! Before screwing everything back up. I suggest you plug it in first to test it out.

Congratulations. Your WUXGA LCD will now work properly on the Inspiron 9400. For anyone wondering, you MUST replace the bottom circuit board or the brightness controls will not work. You brightness will be stuck at the lowest setting and nearly impossible to see.
