Ever since I saw newer systems being offered with Dual SSD drives in RAID for 128GB of SSD storage I've been wondering if I can do that with my XPS m1710.
My 100GB drive is just too small. I've been looking at replacing it with the Hitachi 200GB 7200 RPM drive, but I thought I'd look at the SSD option as well.
The only reason I purchased my xps m1710Â is that I thought it was the top of the range model at the time, now all I want to do is replace the hd but at the same time retain all the functionality of the hidden restore partition and the media centre partition. You would expect Dell would make this easy for me as the owner and as Dell market themselves as providing user friendly IT solutions.
I have tried using trueimage to clone the drive but when trying the new drive on boot up it gets to the Dell 'blue bar' then freezes. I have tried copying partition by partition but this is even less successful.
I have tried restoring the restore 'ghost' image to the new hard drive but symantec ghost reports incompatibilities with the image file.
I am upgrading my original Samsung hd (SATA) to a new hd and would like to keep the hidden partition and mediacentre partition as my original hd. I have a new SATA hd which is currently connected in a USB enclosure. I am not a hd or filesystem expert and don't want to spend a year studying the goodells website.
This afternoon my Acer Aspire 5600's 100GB ATA/IDE drive died on me (lots of clicking/grinding sounds, nonstop disk read errors). I was looking around for a replacement but all I can find in stores are SATA drives. Can I find a reliable IDE drive somewhere for cheap? Would it be worth putting in a solid state drive (if one can be found for $100 or less)?

In Canada, the 128 GB Mobility SSD is $589 extra, while the 64 GB Ultra-Performance SSD is $648 extra.
I would really like to know how much (if any) performance I would be sacrificing by going for the bigger (and cheaper) Mobility SSD.
I have an older Samsung SLC RBX series 64GB SSD lying around. This was one of the very first generation SSDs to come out on the market. I was interested in installing this in my early 2009 15" MBP, and I wanted to ask how the experience of a limited hard drive (i.e. only 64GB) will be in Mac OS X. I am currently on a 500GB WD Scorpio Blue, and have about 50% used with various documents, music, etc. Obviously, I realize that I won't have the same functionality with a more limited hard drive. However, the speed improvement I think will be far worth the decrease in capacity, and I was hoping that someone with experience running Mac OS X on lower capacities drive could chime and let me know of some of the pros and cons.

Anyone know a fix for this issue? the phillips t00 screw is stripped as well so I cant even take out the retention bar. If there is anyway to install the os without removing the hdd.

firmware version is VBM19D1Q. Seems like the version that support TRIM is VBM19C1Q. Doesnt that seem like a downgrade? I've had my notebook since October 2009 so I dont think it has TRIM support from the factory.

I've been watching the order on Dell's site all week, as it was scheduled to ship (on or before today) (2/21/08), and I opted for Next Day shipping.
When I placed the order, the woman I spoke with asked for my Service Tag number. I, um... don't HAVE one... I didn't say this, I simply said I don't have that information at the moment. She asked how I got the part numbers, and I told her from their own Spare Parts page.
Well....the order got cancelled today. Saw it online while at work, just before I left for the day. Another order number with the identical items was created, with a scheduled ship date of 3/3/08. WHAT?
The woman just called....she states they cannot process my order without a service tag number. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!
I told her I don't have a tag number....she asked if I was building one. "Yes." To which I hear...
"Oh....well, I don't think our supplier will allow that without a service tag number, because we reserve those parts for people who bought m1710's."
I said "That's amazing...because I know a number of people who have done the same thing I'm trying to do, and had no problems getting these parts."
"Well, that's because they have m1710's"
*mad enought to scream at this point* "Um, no...where do you think I got the idea from?? I'm certainly not the first person to have this idea."

Is there a way to get 2.1 audio instead of just stereo so I can have control to my subwoofer?
I can only choose stereo, quadraphonic, and 5.1 surround under speaker setup. Is the bass boost the only way I can control my subwoofer on the laptop?
I just have on board audio with sigmatel HD audio software. It will let me change my 2 audio and 1 mic port to all 3 audio ports for front, center, and rear.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have recently been completely unable to access the set-up area of my bios on my Dell XPS 17 L702x laptop. On booting, i keep pressing the F2 key which seems to be registered by the BIOS as the text that says 'Set-Up' lights up. However, instead of entering the setup, the BIOS simply continues booting my operating system. Even if I remove all of the hard drive's, I cannot enter the set up and the BIOS boots to the PXE Setup.
I have tried reflashing the BIOS but nothing changes, the set-up is still inaccessible. I can't even change the boot order using the F12 key.
I really need access to my BIOS and I am all out of options.
I am trying to set up my laptop to use two (2) external monitors (both Dell monitors). I am using a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop that has an external VGA connection as well as an HDMI connection. I can currently use the laptop LCD screen as one display and an external monitor (either VGA or DVI) as the second, or I can use both external (VGA and DVI) as my extended output. But I am unable to get it to work with all three. Is this a hardward limitation? or Setup limitation? Do I need third party software to accomplish that?
The laptop is running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.
FutureMark can't compare my score because it says there's no similar systems to compare to, and I'm still new to this....

I've been doing more and more programming lately and am finding it increasingly frustrating flicking through a dozen windows on my 15.6inch Studio.
It already has a 1080p screen but it still is a pain and the prolonged hours staring at small texts is proving to be rather tiring for my eyes.
I've decided to buy an external monitor to solve this problem and use it as a dual screen but I'm unsure how to go about it.
after installing win 7 in my dell a lost bios setup.I press F2 key at splash screen Dell but nothing happens. I update the fitmware of my bios with the last version but nothing again.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do a factory restore on a 2010 Dell XPS L701X using the Dell Datasafe Backup. When booting, I choose to restore to factory condition/setup. At 55% of reformatting I keep getting an error, the error reads, "Error Ox001100200001005". It will not go farther, when I click OK, the computer simply reboots and the cycle starts all over again.

Now there wasn't any  drivers that other recommended like chipset/system drivers available when searching by service tag. However if you search by model (600m) a lot more come up. Im not sure if I should download any of them.
My problem is it cannot connect to the internet and the ethernet port is dead. I have no error messages. I tried LANÂ connections using an ethernet cable to another machine and it does not take.
I am running Intel PROSet/Wireless and it does see nearby networks but cannot connect. It says configuration failed. I have read all the usual documents for troubleshooting but no solution yet. I have heard there where some flaws with this model and some of the equipment.Â
I purchased a Latitude D505 from a police auction and the BIOS setup is locked by password. It will not allow me change setups, such as system time.
Under system security it shows Primary Password unabled, Admin Password Enabled, Configure Setup Disabled and Configure Password enabled.
I need to clear these in order to setup new HDD and operating system.

From the beginning:
I got my XPS15 (32gb ssd + 1tb hdd) right before christmas and had been happy with it. I even managed to get Intel Rapid Storage running, since it did not work from the beginning for whatever reason.My hdd made funny sounds soon after, so last week happened what needed to happen - the hdd crashed.Â
No problem, dell in person of a service technician replaced the hdd and installed a clean win 8 (not the original dell package, just a plain one). This did not support Intel Rapid Storage, probably because bios was set to AHCI. I found out later, when the technician had left. Not any driver seemed to work.
So I decided to recover my old win 8 with my self made set of recovery dvds. But this did not work, win 8 just did not want to start after recovery.
I now try to install win 8 from the dvd the service guy brought, but at the beginning it asks me to provide the correct driver. I put the F6-driver for sata from intel onto a usb-stick, but setup does not accept that. I cannot proceed with installation...
I have this hidden partition on my notebook (aspire 6920G) and I have no idea what is it used for. I know that PQService is recovery partition but I've never heard of this. By googling I've found that HP's used to use Compaq Setup partition to boot bios (?), but this is acer. I would really like to get rid of it (because now I can't create another primary partition).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI know that my notebook came with the Sony® Notebook Setup utility program but I lost this recovery disks that came with this notebook so I did have to buy Windows XP Home and did a clean installation of it. I did get the drivers from esupport.sony.com but I can't find the Sony Notebook Setup utility program.
Does anyone know how I can download this and install this on my notebook? It's a program that tells the specs of my PC.

I just recieved a new Alienware desktop which gives me everything I need in terms of a desktop windows setup. However I also have the 24" ultrasharp which has MANY inputs, so I was thinking of creating a desktop type setup with the macbook pro.
Here is what I was thinking I'd need:
1) DVI-D cable (is VGA good enough?)
2) laptop stand
3) bluetooth keyboard/mighty mouse
I should be able to run the 1900 x 1200 as an extended desktop or as people said if I shut the top it should run like a full out desktop correct?
I want to look at the boot option settings on my HP 15 Notebook PC. When I boot, I hit the F1 key and basic information about my PC pops up, but I cannot get into the BIOS setup.
