Dell :: M6400 Screen Resolution Gets Reset To 1024x76
Jun 12, 2009
I'm having some trouble with my m6400, but I'm not sure if its a Dell problem or my gfx card or Windows Vista itself.
Whenever I start my laptop the screen resolution gets reset to 1024x768, and I need to manually re-configure my screen.
Does anyone have an idea why this may be?

I just bought a brand new Sony Vaio VPCF11M1E and I have the following problem:
Because in normal stand the screen is very small, I enlarged it to x150%. Everything becomes bigger, but the following parts are blurry and absolutely not sharp:
-Pop ups, of programs and of windows itself (like advanced settings of something and then a new windows pops up, that one is then totally blurry; you can read it, but it is not the good resolution)
-Google chrome (and with that, all the internet pages)
-The google chrome on the desktop is also very blurry, while all the others, are still sharp (after the enlargement by 150%)
I have tried everything (32 bits colours is on, cleartype is on). I also did a system restore to the first days I bought the laptop and then it was on 100% so the resolution was excellent, but then I put it on 150% and again, the parts I mentioned above, were blurry.

I just got my new Studio XPS 1640 in the mail today and got a little excited. I started tweaking stuff galore, following the variety of vista tweaking thread for reducing boot time, speeding up your comp etc... but I think I must have screwed something up because the computer started lagging like crazy. i couldn't even navigate in "My Computer"
So me, being all excited and dumb decided that I would reinstall Vista and partition my C drive (which is a 256gb SSD btw, if that's important), instead of learning about the Factory Image Restore.
So now my screen resolution sucks, and I'm frustrated and tired of trying to fix this. I just want it back to how it was before, fresh out of the box. I have the Vista CD and The Driver CD, and I tried installing every damned driver and application and whatever, but it's never the same as it came out of the box.
I can't find the webcam or facial recognition software anywhere and I'm missing the cool dock at the top and bleh. I'll stop ranting, but if anyone. ANYONE, knows how to help me I would greatly appreciate it. I just want the good laptop that I paid 2000$ for.

Currently i have my screen resolution at 1200x800 and i find it too sharp, the one below that 1280x720 is too squashed and too sharp, the one lower from that is too blurry, but perfect proportions (1024x768)
is there any way i can change to a one in between or something.

I just bought a Latitude E6500 with a WUXGA LCD with Nvidia NVS 160M to replace my old Inspiron 8600 also with WUXGA screen.
I am puzzled with one thing : with my old 8600 I was able to change resolution from 1920X1200 way back to 800X600 without any loss of quality. The screen always ramained crisp and clear.
Now, with my new E6500, anything less than 1920 X 1200 gets fuzzy. I read all about the "native resolution" speach, but what I can't understand is why the old laptop was able to show all resolutions properly, and the new on doesn't.

There is no configurable screen and the tech specs don't say other than "HD" which most people use for 1366x768.
Has anyone been able to confirm the screen resolution on the new Vostro 2500 series or 3400?
Any idea on how long it takes them to make it a bit more configurable?

My XPS 1730 has a couple of issues I can't seem to resolve. I just updated the bios to the latest version but that didn't help. If I set my clock to 9:45, it will run until 10:38 and then revert back to 9:45. It will do this endlessly. When I installed the new bios, I got a message say the RTC was fixed as I might have a clock problem. The clock ran last night for about 4 hours properly. Then I closed the lid. When I opened it this morning, the clock displayed the same time as when I closed it last night.
In addition, when I leave the computer on and just close the lid, the resolution goes from the highest (my preference) to the lowest when I open the lid again.
I have a new battery in the machine as well as it was left on last night with the power cord plugged in. All I did was close the lid.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What are the 5 screen resolution options for the Dell Studio 1555 display with a 1900 x 1080 display?
"15.6 Inch Full High Definition(1080p) High Brightness LED Display with TrueLife and Camera/Facial Recognition"
Is 1280 x 800 one of the 5 resolution settings available under the Display Settings? I believe this is the lowest resolution setting where pictures are not distorted and out of proportion. Anything lower, like 1280 x 720, pictures become distorted....

But I'm encountering a big problem, my display is weird (there is some green filter added) in addition Windows 8 does not completely (it stop after the blue logo).
I can see something if I boot on my Ubuntu USB. Even the boot logo have the green filter.
On the others side if I come back to the original disciple screen, all is well. So, at a first sight I think it is not a connector problem or a graphics card problem.
It's a Dell Studio 1555 with a ATI Mobility Radeon 4500....

Has anyone successfully calibrated the RGB LED screen on the M6400 Covet using a colorimeter?
I have a Pantone Huey Pro and I'm getting really bad results after calibration (washed out colors, greenish cast). After about 2 months of back and forth with Pantone they have told me that "maybe" my colorimeter doesn't have enough range for a screen with such a wide gamut.
The "maybe" part, which suggests they don't even know their own product, is what I find unbelievable

What is the probability that the next refreshed MBP will have a high res screen as an option. At least 1680x1050. I really want to buy a MBP before end of the year, but I would definitely wait if the new models have high res screens. But, who knows when the new models will be released.

had a Dell 1735..screen resolution was perfect and webpages i visited looked nice and sharp etc...purchased a new Dell studio 1737 laptop and it seems that the default setting is 1920 x 1200..this makes everything very sharp but to small to work with...the correct setting for the correct size etc...seems to be 1440 x 900..but when i change the settings to this size everything is the correct size but not as sharp...and websites i visit such as Facebook etc..the text on these pages seems different..now, when I place my old Dell studio 1735 beside my new Dell studio 1737 my old laptop which is set at 1440 x 900..my old laptop looks far sharper and superior to my new laptop! My old 1735 has the highest setting for resolution at 1440 x 900 while the new 1737 seems to have a higher setting option of 1920 x 1200. Is there a big difference between the 1735 and 1737? Am I stuck with just keeping my setting on my new 1737 at 1440 x 900 and putting up with the blurriness etc? Have tried everything from going into Catalyst center to adjusting settings in appearance in vista etc..

When I first got my Latitude E5520 (i7, 8Gb RAM, Intel HD graphics) I could connect to a Citrix based VDI desktop with a screen resolution of 1920x1024. Suddenly it dropped to 1280x760. I have never been able to get it to shift back to 1920.
The Citrix client has been replaced with both available options. Same result. Every possible configuration setting has been set to 1920x1024 to no avail.
The native desktop is at 1920x1024. Shifting into the VDI session, the only screen resolution offered is 1280x760.
I have also reloaded the graphics driver. Same results.Going into the advanced graphics configuration on the laptop confirms 1920x1024.
Other laptops allow me to log in to the same VDI desktop in 1920x1024 resolution so it is isolated to the laptop itself...

This is driving me crazy. The left rubber bumper on the keyboard deck of my m6400 keeps coming off. I called dell and they ended up replacing the entire deck just to replace this one little rubber piece and it just ended up coming off again.
I really don't want to call dell and set up a service call just to replace this one little piece. The last time I did the tech completely disassembled my laptop and it took him 3 reassembly attempts to get it to boot,
but I'm worried the my screen will get cracked if I don't (I have the covet with the glass screen). Seems like a really bad design.

i am aware that there is a lengthy thread on the owners of the m6400 and even a shorter thread on the crashes of the m6400 while gaming, namely wow and others...
i've recently purchased an m6400 and i too have become a victim of this issue.
until recently, i've no quarrels with Dell, i've purchased mostly Dell systems for my business, over 20 or so systems to date... and they have been doing well for my uses.
but the frustration with the m6400 is begining to wear down on me.
i make this thread and hope that someone from Dell becomes more aware of the situation.
it seems that the m6400 with the 3700 graphics card has brought many woes to owners who utilizes any program that uses 3D accelerator...
in my brief review of the threads here, it seems that the only resolution is like playing a lottery... get the card replaced... and see if it works, if not, repeat... some works after one, some after numerous replacements.
it also seems that this issue is not related only to games such as WoW or FFIX or Guild wars, there's been issues reported with Google Earth, as reported by fellow NBR members, SolidWorks, and by other dell users who have responded to my post on their "support" or rather, "support-less" forums...
now firstly, i am not bashing on dell... as a matter of fact, i have nothing but praise for their service department on the business machines... they've been quite responsive and the quality of service is excellent... just that the resolution of the problem is very disappointing to say the least.
in my experience, the crashes happen most frequently during WoW and also happened while i was installing a program and even in google earth... but it was very random...
i'm sure it's basic tech service procedure to have me check external monitor, fine, then they asked me to reseat the LCD cable.. hmm... i'm being asked to go inside my computer?
i've asked them if it will void warranty if i do this... answer is no... but i still felt that ANY customer should not have to disassemble their machines to make it work...
well, they scheduled a repair, replaced the graphics card and now... it's more frequent.
on a side note, i have to say, dell pretty much sucked on the packaging of the replacement card... the fins were pretty dented on 3 locations... seems that the packaging failed to hold the card in place.
well, as i was saying, it fails more frequently... so far, it failed over 10 times... in frustration, i don't even check the machine... and resorted to using my old one.
now i'm scheduled for yet another replacement... i hope for the best as i am really pleased with all of the other aspects of the machine... except, of course, the power brick... who can have any love for such a big ugly thing?
i am contemplating a requesting a full refund or even asking to replace the quador 3700 to the new ATI card...
but in the end... it's definitely not what i have paid good money for...
the resolution is pathetic... try and let's see? now i have to take off another day off work and schedule an appointment with the tech...
wonder if dell is going to reimburse me for my use of personal day?
wonder if i can charge dell my regular hourly wage when i perform these tasks...
anyway, next week, new card... new hopes? well... let's see...
and as for those who ask... why did you get a workstation lappy and complain it does not game well?... it's not really just a gaming issue... any machine purchased by the end consumer should come as a full working order for the ENTIRE package... fine, show me the disclaimer that says, you cannot game on this machine... and i'll stay quiet...
what do you guys think? should i request for refund or request for the ATI card?

***I should also note that some of the close screen shots are a little blurry. I wasnt using a camera stand and taking shots with no flash. So like in the sunset shot, dont compare resolution cause the m6400 pic looks blurrier than the 9100 pic. Just compare color and brightness. Sorry, I just noticed this hours later *
Ok, Ive taken some side by side pics.
Old laptop, Dell 9100 15" about 4.5 years old.
New Laptop - M6400 Covet
As you can see, for me at least, buying this 17" isnt much bigger than the
15" Im used to. Ok, yeah. I wish the power supply wasnt so big but I will still carry this daily with me to work.
I have a backpack by Spire that I LOVE. They make a sleeve that fits this laptop fine and though the backpack I bought isnt SUPPOSED to fit that big of a sleeve, it actually works.
I highly recommend Spire backpacks. My old one for the 9100 has been carried almost Daily for over 4 years with good weight in it and it still really seems like new esp in the strength department.
I am no expert in video card and monitor stuff as Im an audio guy, so I havent tweaked anything with these screens. They are just both set to highest brightness level and as they came. Im not sure how "fair" it is to compare these since one is an LED screen and one is not and right there, you should expect one to be "colder" and one "warmer".
The LED on the m6400 is definately more saturated with color and way brighter. In whites, my old one looks a bit yellowish though it doesnt really show on the pics.
I tried to so some comparison glossy vs matte (9100) screen. Yep, the Covet is glossy as it IS glass after all, but nope, it doesnt bother me a bit. My first glossy screen too.
I tried to show the screen at angles but both these screens seem to have a wide angle range for viewing.

Had my Acer Aspire 8930 for 11 months now and I've always assumed it displayed images at 1920 x 1080 because of the blu ray drive and the fact it has a sticker on the front of the laptop which says 'FULL HD 1080 PLAYBACK'.
I've just gone into my display settings and it says 1680 x 945!
That is on the highest setting possible.
The sticker on the side of the box it came in says;
Aspire 8930G - 584G32Bn which according to [url] states at the top in the summary it boasts 1920 x 1080.
How can the sticker on my laptop claim full HD at 1080? Do I have the wrong screen on my laptop or am I missing something?

I'm thinking of purchasing a 15" MBP and am debating between the standard screen and the high resolution screen. I had a studio xps 16 with the 1080p screen and though it looked great so I would ideally like to get the high resolution screen. However, I wanted to see if I could get some opinions on the readability of the screen, is text readable? Does Mac OS contain a feature like Win 7 where you can increase the text size? I really liked the look and extra space higher resolution screens offer but did notice on the studio xps that without increasing the text size text (which it did by default) text and menus were too small. What are your opinions on the macbook's high resolution screen, which do you prefer?

Relatively soon after a Windows Update (Vista), my screen blacked out and the resolution changed from 1920x1200 to something like 800x600. After restarting the notebook, everything seemed to be back to normal, except my graphics card (GeForce 8800M GTX x 2) wasn't working, and upon looking in the device manager, it said the device wasn't working (code 43).
So, I tried uninstalling drivers/reinstalling drivers, etc. and nothing seemed to work. And now something I've done has made the main VGA drivers or whatever not work, and all I see is a big black screen on startup (but the mouse icon is on the screen and can move around).
