I can't seem to get my team fortress 2 start on my studio 15, i only got the 4500MHD chip, is that where the problem is?
I've updated to directX 10 and everything but it still will not start for me after the intro video, just a black screen with a white mouse that i can move around
I'm interested to hear from those who are experimenting with Windows 7 on their Studio XPS laptops have you had any issues with drivers or anything, is everything working ok?
Also what program do you recommend for dual booting say vista as your primary os and then a partition for windows 7?
I'm new to experimenting with beta OS's but I most certainly will have a look into windows 7.
I bought new Dell E4300 with 7200 rpm harddisk. Notebook is nice except one problem I have - every 2 seconds or more (this differes a lot on resources usage) movies or music stops playing for a very short time ... simply said playing isn't smooth.
I think it could be a HDD problem so I run HDTune benchmark.

Almost in every low point of the graph the video or music stopped playing for a very short time (300-600ms) and that is very annoying.
I think it could be a hdd problem or maybe CPU problem that affects the hdd results as well, because the mouse pointer also stops moving for a while.
I have just received today my new Studio XPS M1640 laptop (with blue ray drive and led screen) and so far all seems to be good except ... It can't play Blue-Ray movies. When I insert a BD disk, the autoplay only gives me the option to explore the folders with explorer. No option to play the disk. If I right click on the drive, I can select powerdvd but once in powerdvd nothing happens.
Notes:
1) I can see the folders on the BD disk in explorer
2) I tried it with the version of powerdvd dx that came with the laptop and also used the online update option of powerdvd dx to get the latest version (8.1). No change.
3) I'm trying to play to the built-in screen, no external monitor connected.
4) I've read somewhere about a blue-ray icon in powerdvd, I don't see this.
5) A long call with Dell support yielded nothing. I specifically asked if they might have shipped the wrong version (non-blue ray of powerdvd), the tech said that they only have the one version and that it has been tested to play BD disks properly.
6) Dell support says to try with other BD disks and if it still doesn't work to return the computer to have it fixed. (I don't really want to do that since it seems to be a software problem).
7) I ran the Cyberlink Blue Ray advisor and it tells me that all is fine except that it doesn't detect a blue ray software player.
Anybody else ran into this? Any solutions?
It would seem a bit strange to have to pay extra for a blue ray movie player on a brand new laptop that included a blue ray drive.
I got this blue ray documentary in x264 .mkv format, I tried playing it with VLC,
it freezes to death. Also it it because of the 8600M GT card? Any other options?
Ever since I installed Windows 7, every time I try running a game that I could play just fine before installing Windows 7, such as Rome: Total War, my computer crashes when I actually start playing the game (as in I can see the map and I tell one dude to move and then the game crashes).
When I say it crashes I mean that the screen turns black but the computer is still running and the fan is on and whatnot, but I am unable to make the computer do anything and I have no choice but to hold down the power button to manually shut off the computer.
Is the GPU temp reduced if i play in 800x600 instead of 1200x800?
Do you have any tip for reducing the temps while playing?
I have a dell inspiron e1705, and my dvd player is not playing the dvd at certain points on it.
i tried playing it in another dvd player of mine, and it worked fine. is it my computer, or hardware/software?...
it makes sounds like it is trying to read it... made sure to clean off the disc {did it several times}. this is not the first time that this has happened either...
When I did a clean install of Vista on my computer, I must have wiped out the program that plays the Blu-ray discs, because it doesn't do anything when I put a disc in. Is there a way I can download this program again, or does anyone recommend another program to use instead?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI've had my Dell Inspiron 15R SE for a year and 3 months. Unfortunately, over the last couple of months the laptop has been getting incredibly hot when playing games to point where it has cut out a couple of times.
This is playing games on the lowest spec/graphics quality and after setting high performance in the CCC to enable the graphics card. For example, my wife can play Skyrim on her laptop which is a much lower spec than my Inspiron with clear frame rates and it stays cool. Doing so on my Inspiron results in overheating quickly on the same quality settings.
I've tried using compressed air on the vents of my laptop in case it's a dust issue, but not sure if I should get into taking it to bits to check the fans more thoroughly.
However, I'm not sure if it actually is a fan issue or a hardware issue. I've run optimisers to make sure my system is running efficiently too. I currently have Windows 8.1.
I've taken apart from 1730 and made sure there was no dust and its quite clean, its sitting up at the back so air is flowing through under it but when playing games all on low settings (playing demigod)
it still slows down when a lot is happening on screen, and the laptop gets extremely hot - even some parts are too hot to touch.
Was in the middle of playing company of heroes, and it just switched off, and now it wont power up again, ive tried disconnecting the battery and power lead, and tried starting it up again and the power light stays on for about 2 seconds and just goes off, i disconnect the battery try to power up again, the multi media lights flash and power light stays on for 2 seconds and then goes off. DEAD as a dodo. feel like throwin it throu the window.
if i bought this from dell as reconditioned, am in the right mind to demand a new one for havin so many problems.
My fairly new 1.5 year old Inspiron M5010 won't start up and instead plays 7 tones. My computer is also out of warranty.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI seem to be getting MS/Ping lags when playing on my Alienware M14x. Every now and then I get random spikes. It stays good for a couple of seconds and then it suddenly it spikes. I have tried running different games and I still get same problems. I uninstalled my WiFi driver and still same problem. I don't know what step I should take next, It is also not overheating, I manage to keep it at a steadt 50. I will now post some of my specs.

about the last week now whenever I play games such as WOW and Far Cry 3 It will start off fine and about a minute - 2 minutes later the game will start to slow down right to less than 1 frame a second I also get keyboard and mouse latency when this happens, and when that starts happening my computer will unexpectedly shutdown.I have the latest driver for my GPU, My computer doesn't feel hot at all when this happens which makes me think it might not be an overheating issue and it only happens when playing games, I can do video editing and rendering just fine along with all the basic computer uses such as file transfer, watching videos, listening to music and browsing without any problem. I pulled my Laptop apart thinking it might just be dust build-up and their was a fair bit of dust clogging up the air vent along the side of my laptop, I cleaned that all out and the air started flowing better from the vent. Thinking that was the problem I turned my laptop back on and it done the same thing while playing games.I'm not sure how to tell If it is a heat issue because there is no separate fan for the cpu or gpu and I can't get temperature readings because my computer slows down too much and then shuts down.Computer Specs:Dell XPS 17 L702x

when i insert a dvd into my blu-ray/dvd drive, it brings up Media Smart Internet TV screen.... i dont even have a tv tuner... how can i change this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI say 'playing' because I never actually get there. Say, Im on the train, and I'll want to play something.. Assassins Creed. I load it up, loading screen is fine, the little video opening is fine, as soon as it comes to actually rendering the graphics it jsut turns itself off. I plug it in at home and it runs beautifully, but as soon as I unplug that power cable, the whole thing just turns off.
It reports a windows error after this, but there is nothing in the error log telling me what shut it down. I KNOW this isn't overheating because I can play it fine on power and although it gets hot when playing gfx intense games it has never turned itself offdue to that.
The games I can play on battery are WoW and Cimcity 4 and audiosurf (although that lags alot on battery :) xD
The games I cannot are Assassins Creed and Devil may Cry 4.
Is this a power issue?
I have tried on multiple power settings and it still likes to turn off when I want to play these games. It may be a GPU power issue?
I have a Studio XPS 1640 that I bought approximately two months ago. It was working fine until today.
I was bored and was playing Chess Titans when the screen would all of the sudden go blank.
The keyboard would not respond and I had to do a hard shutdown. I played Chess Titans again and it was working fine for a few games but all of the sudden it went to the blank, black screen again and I had to do a hard shutdown.
I have my inspirion 17R now for 2 weeks, and when i play Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and GTAIV on it. It's gonna freeze after a while. It is not really hot. I think it's around 55~60 degrees celsius. This is without things put under the laptop. This problem is gonna piss me off for now, because also the hard drive light is on then and doesn't go out. And when i put my ear on the laptop the hard drive is not searching at all. ( it is a 1TB seagate momentus ) And i have a Core i7 and Nvidia Geforce GT630M 1GB. My dad said send it back, but i don't think that will solve the problem. Normally if i use Speedfan to put the fan on 100% the laptop will stay cool. Around 45 degrees celsius when gaming.
View -1 Replies View RelatedI seem to be experiencing a common issue with the L502X Dell computer, in which it freezes when playing games on any graphics settings. My computer freezes and a loud buzzing noise happens and the last playing noise is looped, and the only way to stop the noise is through a hard reset. I'm pretty sure that the motherboard is the problem as many others on the forum have had almost identical problems which were solved with a motherboard replacement. I have updated all my drivers/BIOS and even done a complete system reformat, but the freezing still occurs.
I have even had my laptop on a cooling pad to try and minimize the heat it produces but the parts have still failed.
I bought my laptop around a year and a half ago, I've been trying to fix this problem for months now. While playing pretty much all video games, whether through Steam, CD or through downloading, at random times while playing my computer will freeze, the sound will start to bug out and there is nothing I can do but manually shut down my computer. My warranty has expired and I am not sure what to do. I've done some reading about under-clocking my CPU and I have no interest in doing that. I keep my drivers and everything up to date so I'm pretty damn sure that this is not a software problem. I want to avoid replacing my motherboard and I will only do so if there is no other option. I am thinking of replacing my hard drive with an SSD

I played Split/second, NFS:the run ,Max Pyne and recently NFS:most wanted. Split/second and most wanted runs on intel HD with sluggish graphics performance. But the run does not run intel hd,it requires discrete graphics. When I switched to nvidia graphics, every time the game computer hanged down after 5-10 minutes of playing the game. Computer screen froze and sound was looping. Control+Alt+Del didn’t work at this occasion.
I had to manually restart my computer. And a point here,there is over heat beneath the laptop though I use Logitech laptop cooler. Games run on nvidia on battery for about 20 minutes on battery power and heat produced under the laptop was also less. This thing happened with every game I listed above and some other graphics demanding games also. Same games worked fine on my friends Dell inspiron 15 laptop with an 2nd gen i5 ,4gb ram and nvidia gt525m 1gb ddr3 graphics card. And of course,these games were installed from same setup file those I used to install games on my computer. So,there can’t be problem with games file itself.
I called Dell xps premium customer support over phone. They told me to install all latest drivers and bios. I did all the things they told. They also remotely diagnosed my computer but nothing good happened. I then went to dell service Centre at Kolkata. I showed them the problem by playing games before themselves. They reformatted and installed all the things again and changed my harddisc. But my problem was not solved. I contacted service Centre again. But they found no problem after diagnosing my computer. But games did not run. In a nutshell, through a span of 1 year my problem could not be solved. And my warranty period has also expired.
We downloaded Minecraft and he plays Hunger Games, a multi-player game, online. He'll join a game and start playing without an issue. But after a few minutes the screen freezes.

And I've Dusted it off many time and it doesn't overheat, I've send it back to my after sales service twice. View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got a new MBP and a new Sony HDR-SR12 camera, and after recording on the camera about 10 hours of important for me video (me+wife Hawai trip, etc) I found it imposible to connect it to my MBP.
I call APPLE and they told me it's because mixed footage (I did record 2 clips in SD, and all the rest in full HD), so iMovie and Final Cut Express (which I also purchased with the MBP) is good for nothing in this case: won't import any video from the camera. FCE supports my camera (on the apple website at least) but not in my case. I erased the SD clips but nothing changed.
I ended up paying another... for Roxio Titanium Pro which says that plays AVCHD movies, but I will see after I am done downloading.
I am really pissed off, I spent like 5-6 hours trying to figure it out, calling Apple and researching the web and in the end I had to pay another $150 to make it work (probably). There are other cheaper options that crash on files over 1.2GB or have other problems. (many of my files are over that).
And to make it worse, on my PC with Win7 works like a charm, I don't even have to install Sony software or any other codecs/decoders: plain WindowsMediaPlayer does it with no problems. I also see the first frame of the movie in the Explorer, which again won't show up in Finder. I can play the files right from the camera, or copy them to HDD and run the from here, raw AVCHD with no issues.............
i just discovered this recently after running left 4 dead on my computer. every 5-10 min when playing the game, everything would slow down and become a slide show for about 10-20 seconds before returning back to normal. i assume this is because of my GPU/CPU becoming too hot and they were downclocked to prevent damage to the motherboard.

The bottom side of the case, on the left side, gets very warm, as well. I've been able to confirm that the fan behind the grill on the bottom side *does* run periodically; however, the grill and underside remain very warm.
How warm? Right now, after playing a video for about 15 minutes, SpeedFan reports the following temperatures: GPU (162F), HD0 (109F), Temp1 (145F), Core 0 (140F), Core 1 (142F). All of the items except HD0 have a flame icon--indicating an abnormally-high temperature. Worse, I've seen the temperatures considerably higher than the above.
I've had this laptop for about five years. The latest BIOS and drivers are installed. It's working OK, otherwise. This problem started, suddenly, perhaps a year ago.
