Acer :: Cracked Back Cover On My Aspire 9410

Dec 5, 2008

I've found a source for the replacement part through EXTENSIVE research- and found an online user manual. I am not used to building/opening laptops, so I don't know whether
I'll need special tools to replace the broken back cover; are there any other parts I may need (such as hinges, antenna WiFi).

Is this even a job I should take on or is it pretty easy?

The LCD is fine- it's JUST the plastic cover I need to replace.

Dell :: Re-occuring, Periodic Rant About The Lack Of An XPS 13 On The Market ...

May 15, 2010

I want a redesigned XPS 13 so that we can have an affordable option to the Sony Z or the many compromises and long wait for the Acer 3820TG. There seems to be an incredible pent-up demand for a decent, light 13.3" notebook. The Vostro GPU is too anemic.

The Inspiron 13R is closer, but the 5450 is still too weak and the device is butt ugly.

I would like to see an ultralight XPS 13 with I5/I7, switchable graphics, HD5650 GPU minimum (5670 would be better) and 1600 x 900 display, brushed aluminum case and under 4 lbs (and don't make it look like the freakin ugly Mini 10).

Sony :: VPCZ1 (US) Lack Of TPM

Apr 6, 2010

My current research shows that the VPCZ1 (US) either doesn't have a TPM, or Sony has gone to great lengths to keep us from enabling it. So far I've tried manually enabling the TPM (by setting a variable in the insyde UEFI area), and trying to get it to show in the setup menu, both attempts have failed.

The problem is the VPCZ1 was advertised with a TPM (at least when I bought it), and Sony has suddenly 'pulled it' silently.
So I'd like to:

1) Figure out if the device actually has a TPM, and enable it if it does
- Figure out why 0x68 is magically set to zero on boot
- Open the laptop and look for infineon TPM (maybe figure out where it is on european models first)

2) If it doesn't, petition against Sony for false advertising. If anyone has any screenshots still of the SonyStyle (US) site before they took off all the TPM stuff, that'd be great...
- get screenshot of sonystyle site
- get screenshot of driver page showing TPM package

HP Mini 5103 :: Keyboard Has Stopped Wanting To Type Any Key Back To Back Without A Pause

Nov 3, 2014

My keyboard has stopped wanting to type any key back to back without a pause (whether it's a letter or delete or backspace). So if I'm typing a word with two letters that are consecutive, I have to pause or forget and backspace (which I can only do once also without a pause). It's also started this slight click/beep that happens usually in conjunction with the error although sometimes not. And, the click/beep isn't consistent (or at least I haven't found it's rhythm yet).

Dell :: Faulty CPU

May 19, 2008

I posted a thread earlier about my CPU getting very hot. Nobody said it was to hot for gaming but my CPU is downclocking when I play a game longer then 5minutes. I have it proped up, my fans on on high, and cleaned my vents and it's still hitting 85C in as little as 30minutes of gaming. My 80NM 360 don't get near this hot. My last laptop (M170) only got to 50C.

So my question is:
is my CPU faulty or does anybody know how to fix this? Hell, it's 60C right now!

Dell :: Faulty Thermal Sensor

Dec 30, 2008

what i wanted wass to fix/bypass the sensor without having to replace the damn board. i couldn't even find a single post staing where exactly the sensor is on the board.
my problem specifically was that beer got spilled on the keyboard. after a while the machine shorted and shut off. I have a Dell Inspiron 9300, with a 1.73 ghz Sonoma CPU. i left the laptop off for two days so some of the liquid would dry out. after some problems and a dozen reboots i got into the bios, then finally through to windows. everything was fine except that the CPU was working at a very low frequency. also the fans were continually at highest speed. the CPU was being reported between 101 mhz to 503 mhz, depending on the software. it was being recognized correctly but showing to operate at 202 mhz in the system properties panel. what was really striking is that the notebook harware software i had installed was reporting the CPU temperature as 85 C. I tried various software to manipulate the CPU frequency to no avail. The temp was a constant 85 C, although i could tell that it was not even close to this temperature since i my laptop was partly disassembled and i could feel the surface of the heatsink with my hand; it was cool.

I finally surmised that the problem was with the thermal sensor on the motherboard. it had probably shorted or got soaked and was reporting the highest temperature it could as a safety measure, thereby limiting the CPU to a very low frequency and not allowing it to throttle above 503 mhz.

My last option, save for replacing the motherboard, was to find the sensor chip, clean it, dry it and hope that it would work again.

But this is not what solved the problem. somewhere on the net i came accross a code, that when entered on an Inspiron 9100 (an older laptop, with a different chipset) would bring up the Thermal Management screen or something like that, which is certainly not accessible via the BIOS. I was playing around with the settings on a program called Hardware sensors monitor, again to no avail, when i finally decided to enter this code:

FN key + zxcvasdqwer. almost the second i pressed z, or maybe after x, the high speed fans shut off! after a short while they kicked back into operation but at a low speed, just like they were supposed to. the program hmonitor began reporting a more realistic CPU temp. i tried to play a high-def movie file and finally it played normal, without any lag or stuttering! as i played it, the fans kicked into higher mode, and the temp which had been steadily rising, began to drop. the program, and most other programs were still reporting the cpu at 202 mhz, windows system properties as well. but since it was playing a 720p video file normally, it had to be much higher than that. i did a reboot and voila!

all monitoring software are now reporting the CPU at 1.73 ghz. the system temperatures are perfectly normal, and at idle the CPU goes as low as 20 degrees C. The software Speedfan, however, is still giving an error regarding the sensor chip on the motherboard.

I seemed to have fixed the severe thermal sensor problem by a few keystrokes, without having to replace the motherboard or even the sensorchip. in fact, i didn't even have to find the sensor node and clean it.

I came accross more than a dozen people who had a very similar problem to mine, with the temperature being reported at 85-86 C, for no reason. At least those who have a Dell notebok might be able to solve this problem.

Dell :: XPS M1330 Faulty GPU Options? Cost?

Jan 28, 2010

I have the XPS m1330 with the nVidia 8400 GPU. Got it back in September of 2007 with just one year warranty.

I just started getting the rainbow colored vertical lines on the screen today, did research, and found out it is due to faulty GPU design.

Called up Dell, and they said even my one year extended warranty due to this common GPU error was over in September of 2008.

They also said I am out of luck, unless I want to go through their out of warranty repair department.

I didn't use the laptop on regular basis till just 8 months ago when my old one finally gave out of me after 6 years. So m1330 has been only used for 8 months, and now I am stuck with bunch of verticals lines, and no hope.

Dell :: Inspiron 1720 Faulty Keyboard?

Oct 21, 2009

My lovely Dell Inspiron 1720 notebook was working quite happily but then the next time I switched it on and used a browser it started filling the URL box with letter 'd' by itself.

It then returned to work normally for a minute or so but then started filling a page with the letter 's' then 'a'. Sometimes I can get it to stop doing this by pressing another key but 'a','s' and 'd' have stopped working altogether except when they spring into life by themselves.

Virus checker says it's clean. What checks can I run to determine if it is a driver fault or keyboard hardware fault?

Dell :: 1730 Faulty Battery/mb/or Power Supply?

Mar 6, 2009

I have a problem with my XPS 1730 laptop, this started probably 4 months ago. (second laptop that has screwed up after the warranty ended). I'm hopeless at explaining stuff, so i'll do it in point forms.

* First sign of trouble started when i booted up my comp one day and it beeped before loading windows and paused saying something like

"AC power adaptor not recognised, press F1 to continue F2 to enter setup, system will run slower"

If i continued then it did run really slow (even though power option was set on high performance) and the battery didnt charge.

* Every time i turned on my computer i had to keep putting the power cable in and out, adjusting it as i did so, until the battery light on the top right (near the lcd screen) flashed. If that didnt flash and i turned it on then the unknown power adaptor message would come up.

Lenovo U410 U/S Series :: Set Of USB Speakers On A Faulty USB Cable

Jun 4, 2014

I have a Lenovo U410 and a set of USB speakers on a faulty USB cable. I know, my fault: i connected the cable and the "+" and "-" connected for a short time. In my laptop i heard a little electrical explosion (no smell) and the laptop immediately powered off itself. At once i removed the USB cable and switched the laptop back on: no problems (!). But once booted, no USB port was working anymore. So my conclusion: i "fried" the system board somewhere.

The laptop is in its guarantee period, however i removed the hard drive and replaced it with an SSD.  I assume the guarantee is lost when i replaced the HDD. I just re-opened the casing but i am unable to find "fried" components or "burned" areas.

Questions:

1. can i investigate more, or find a solution myself?

2. i probably need a new system board. Where can i order a new system board?

HP/Compaq :: Faulty Processor On My DV6812NR- XP Will Only Install With ACPI Uniprocessor HAL

Feb 19, 2009

I just picked up a HP DV6812NR notebook. It has a AMD Turion 64 X2 processor (TL-60, 2.0GHZ). It's a barely used refurb model that the guy was selling because he couldn't get the OS to install. I bought it off him cheaply hoping it was just a software issue.

This model has an IDE hard drive so there was no need to slipstream SATA drivers into my XP install CD. However the XP install would not work right away. It successfully formatted the partition and copied files, but would hang after the installation reboot.

After a bit of research I tried selecting a different HAL by pressing F5 as the XP setup loaded. Funnily enough if i selected ACPI uniprocessor PC, the installation did complete. However unsurprisingly, XP then only saw one processor in task manager, and performance seemed just a little funky.

Does this suggest a bad processor? If so that wouldn't be the end of the world as I could probably pick up another TL-60 for around $100. Even cheaper I could pick up a Turion 64 X2 TL-50 (1.6 GHz). Any reason that lesser processor wouldn't work in this machine? What would the performance hit be like if this notebook is to be primarily used for watching movies and surfing the net?
