Dec 31, 2011I have a Pavilion dv6-6173cl laptop. It's been working fine until recently, when I left it on overnight to finish downloading a huge file. When I tried to adjust the brightness the next morning, I couldn't (though it was still at full brightness like I always keep it). So I thought, "why not reboot it?" I rebooted and now the display is the dimmest it can get with no way of adjusting the brightness using the brightness keys, control panel, or otherwise.
This has happened before. When it did, I did a factory reset on it and it fixed the problem. However, although there is no absolutely critical data on there and I can always make a backup, I prefer to not have to go through all that if it's avoidable. I have an external display that HP asked me to connect it to to see if it was a hardware or software issue. The external display was at full brightness, so when they asked me to ship it in I did a factory reset and that solved the problem. And now it's back.

Dec 19, 2014I have had this tablet for less than one week. Under settings in windows 8.1 modern interface is a control slider for the screen brightness. it does not appear to do anything. I would like to be able to change screen brightness suit my needs, but I cannot make this work. What settings I need to change or maybe software I need to update? There is one Acer driver update which does not load properly and always says fail. I believe it has to do with screen settings. Could that be the problem?

Feb 10, 2012i have downloaded Catalyst Control Center several times but it is still not working. I have Paviliion dv6-6120se, AMD radeon hd 6490M and built-in intel GPU hd 3000 both GPUs is working fine but the problem started when i uninstalled the Catalyst Control Center in order to get a new updated one from AMD website. But the AMD site said my version of radeon hd 6490M is not supported anyway i have tried everything i uninstalled the ATI GPU driver and install it again. Somehow I downloaded Catalyst Control Center the and the installation finished and the same problem it is still not working. Now i lost the Catalyst Control Center and the switchable graphics config.

Oct 28, 2014Since my laptop (dv6 pavilion 7090el) had to be formatted to another copy of windows 7 (64bit), i can't manage to make hotkeys for brightness(f2-f3)/volume(f9-f10).
I tried to install/uninstall/install HP quick launch software (with all the system restarting combos possible) and the software doesn't really seem to be installed, since it only appears in the Control panel but not anywhere else.
The BIOS "action key" option in System configuration is already "enabled" ....

Mar 3, 2011The brightness control keys (f2 & f3) on my pavilion dm4 stopped working all of a sudden. I'm operating windows 7 64bit. I've tried reverting to previous system restore points. I've also installed the BIOS, Intel chipset, and graphics drivers. All the other function keys are working properly, just can't change the brightness. Right now it's stuck on the brightest setting. I'm getting terrible eye strain from the screen.

When I restart my computer, my sound works for an hour or two and then suddenly shuts off. It does this with or without headphones. It works again as soon as I restart the computer, but I'd really love not to have to restart my computer every hour just to get the sound to work.
Also- downloading Windows 8 isn't an option as a lot of my work is incompatible with windows 8.

May 27, 2014I've got 2 separate but really annoying issues with my W540 20BH:
- display brightness keys not working: when waking up from Hibernation mode, sometimer (really, randomly!) the display brightness keys (Fn+F5/F6) don't work.... either if the display brightness is stuck on max, min or an intermediate level...Is there a way to shut down and restart the process which commands the Fn keys?
- audio channel commutation gets stuck. Normal behaviour of the audio configuration is:
1) speaker volume disabled, mic disabled
2) when plugging in a 4-pin headset, headset's volume is on, headset's mic is switched on; speaker volume is still disables.
3) when unplugging the headset, speakers' volume is still 0
After each boot, the audio channel is at 0, but doesn't commute to the headset when plugged in! I have to open Configuration Panel, realtek properties. With this window open, unplug and re-plug the headset. Now, the volume has its normal behaviour.
Any better way to configure audio channels and evenments, which is able to bypass realtek's manager?

Even when i switch to that has brightness set to like 80% nothing happens. I went to maxium preformace profile and for some reason it is set to 0% when I change it to 100% and hit apply 2 seconds later it changes back to 0%.
Out side of windows(ie the login screen) I can change my brightness to 100% and it will stay there it's when I login it reverts to 0%.
I have the acer aspire 5100 laptop. Is there anyway someone could have changed something that makes this happen?
