Lenovo ThinkPad W Series :: W540 - Display Brightness Keys Not Working / Audio Channel Commutation Gets Stuck
May 27, 2014
I've got 2 separate but really annoying issues with my W540 20BH:
- display brightness keys not working: when waking up from Hibernation mode, sometimer (really, randomly!) the display brightness keys (Fn+F5/F6) don't work.... either if the display brightness is stuck on max, min or an intermediate level...Is there a way to shut down and restart the process which commands the Fn keys?
- audio channel commutation gets stuck. Normal behaviour of the audio configuration is:
1) speaker volume disabled, mic disabled
2) when plugging in a 4-pin headset, headset's volume is on, headset's mic is switched on; speaker volume is still disables.
3) when unplugging the headset, speakers' volume is still 0
After each boot, the audio channel is at 0, but doesn't commute to the headset when plugged in! I have to open Configuration Panel, realtek properties. With this window open, unplug and re-plug the headset. Now, the volume has its normal behaviour.
Any better way to configure audio channels and evenments, which is able to bypass realtek's manager?
I have a brand new W540 with Windows 8.1 running. Some Fn-Keys are working, for example Fn+F2 for the volume. But I have some keys which are not working: Fn+F5 or Fn+F6 should change the LCD brightness.
Why these keys are not working? All updates are applied (Lenovo and Windows)...
I just got the x120e and I already went through and fixed it auto-brightening itself. After I hit the Fn + Home and adjusted it to my preference. It was not on the charger when I did that and I was in a darker room so I had the brightness down lower. Later on in the day, I plugged it in to charge and I went to make it brighter. The brightness is not changing however. All the oher Fn + F keys are working. Just not the two for brightness. The weird thing is, I shut the computer, waited for it to enter sleep mode then opened it up again and it was really bright and I had to pretty much squint, but again the keys were not working to lower it. I closed it again and opened it and it is again dimmer. The keys still aren't working.
Had a w540 for a few days and so far it'd be fine. At the weekend i used the laptop on battery for a long time and thus set the power-management low to conserve power.
However, today having switched back to power supply and setting power scheme to max performance the CPU is still concerving power.
Its running (according to resource manager) at 29% and no matter how much i do it sticks at that percentage. The laptop does feel like its running at that clock speed too ... everything is super slow ... can watch programs drawing in the display...
I have a W540 with 3K Ips panel and Windows 7 Pro 64bit.
I recently installed a new hard drive and installed windows 7 pro 64 (previously on the other hard drive was Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit ( there I could change the brightness ) )
My problem is that I can not change the brightness .
I've already tried:
-Reinstalled all NVIDIA driver -Reinstalled all Intel graphic drivers new -Reinstalled Intel and Nvidia drivers simultaneously -Remove Lenovo Power management -Tried to install NVIDIA driver from the Lenovo and the Nvidia page -Reinstalled Windows
I have reinstalled my thinkpad W540. For display driver I have downloaded latest version from Nvidia. All other drivers are installed from Lenovo website.
OS: Win8.1 pro When I push the F5 or F6, display brightness bar is shown, but nothing happens.
Already tried - reinstall drivers after delete device in device manager - reinstall programs after delete all drivers from nvidia and intel in program and features
I have just bought a new W540 and it's almost impossible to work with common software packages that heavily use F1-F12. Every time I want to use the F1-F12 keys, I have to press also the Fn key. For me this is a problematic change from my previous T510 machine...
Is there a way to swap the default behavior of the multimedia keys with the F1-F12 legacy keys?
I have tested the following on 2 identical W540 machines. After installing Windows 8.1, the internal camera is not working. I dont remember if the camera worked before we installed 8.1. I have installed all relevant drivers and updated all windows updates. I have installed all drivers from System update.
I've a new Thinkpad W540 with Windows 7 64bit. I can't see the Card Reader in the device list. When I insert a SD Card, nothing happens. All I/Os are enabled in the Bios. What can I do?
I might have seen the numeric keypad keys work once since getting this machine, but now can't get the keys to produce numbers. Some of the keys initiate other actions not associated with numeric data entry.
I tried removing the wireless dongle for my Microsoft wireless mouse but no improvement -- I simply swapped this MS mouse from my old W510 without doing any formal install.
This doesn't appear to be a hardware problem since the keypad keys have some effect -- just not the intended effect.
I have a new W540, and the microphone mute button does not work properly. When I press fn+f4. the red LED turns on, the slashed out microphone appears on the screen, and the volume settings for both the "Microphone" and "External Mic" are muted in Windows. However, audio from the microphones still capture audio, and it can be recorded on applications like Audacity and Skype.
Manually muting the microhphones via the Sound dialog in Windows has the same effect. The LED and OSD come on, but the microphone does not stop recording. As of now, I have found no way to mute the microphone outside of muting sound input in each individual applicaton.
My new W540 (11/10/2014) Lenovo Solution Center under the Check-up tab alerts me that the FaceTime HD Camera (Display) Driver is Not Installed. Such as it is, the camera, a 720P HD, works just fine. A search of resources does not uncover any comment or Driver on this issue. So, since there is no problem as near as I can determine, should I just ignore the lack of Driver issue, and if so, what is the procedure to stop the Solution Center from alerting me to this error? But if on the other hand I should install the Driver, where is that to be found?

I'm using the W540 in the Ultra Dock with video on a second monitor, an Apple monitor, using a Thunderbolt cable. There is no Thunderbolt port in the Dock, so I use the W540 port which surprised me that it works.
FWIW, it is taking me a lot of time learning the location of programs and utilities having moved from my old W510 Win 7(64) setup to the W540 Win(64) 8.1 setup.

My question concerns the non-functioning sleep mode buttons on my Lenovo W540 20BG.
In my current power management settings, the W540 is suppose to enter sleep mode by pressing Fn4 or by pressing the round power button shortly. However, either one of these methods do not work.
My computer does enter sleep mode when usign the Windows start menu (Start->Shut Down -> Sleep).
Both me and a friend of mine have Lenovo W540s. Everything was working perfectly fine with all of our hardware, until today. A BIOS update came out and installed correctly on both of our machines. After this update both of our UltraNAV features on the trackpad are all dead. After that first restart a message appeared "finding new hardware" and it found a generic mouse on the laptop. Now when I try to re-install the UltraNav drivers, it says no hardware found. I tried both the drivers on Lenovo.com and the manufacture's website all with no luck.
I have a W500, ATI Mobility FireGL V5700, Windows 7.
When I press FN+Home and FN+END to regulate brightness up or down, the brightness symbols turn on and goes up/down, but the screen brightness is not regulated up or down but stays constant somewhere in between.
What can I do to get "brighness" working?
It has never worked, the computer is 2 months old. I have upgraded from Windows 7, 32 bit to 64, but brightness is still not working.
I have recently purchased a W540 and connected to my Dell u3011 30" monitor. I used the Dual Link DVI-D cable that came with the monitor and plugged it into my Ultra Dock. The maximum resolution i can get is 1920x1080? When i change over to a Display port cable i can achieve the full 2560 x 1600 resolution? Is there something i need to do in addition to achieve the full 2560x1600 resolution with the DVI-D dual link cable? I want to be able to connect 2 laptops to the one monitor and only have 1 display port input so i need to be able to use the DVI cable on the 2nd machine while still achieving 2560x1600 resolution.
I have lenovo s540 . I installed own original version win 8.1. I have problem with some functional keys. Especially with F4- Microphone muteF8 - manage wireless connection F9 -settingsF10- win searchF11 - view programs that are openedF12 - view all the programs
I think thats I need driver but I dont know which .
Knocked half a glass of water over keyboard yesterday. Turned off & wiped away straightaway. No problem re-booting etc but now some kets along top 2 rows not working. After a day - do you think there's any chance these will spring back into life?Do Lenovo supply any on-site repair options (at a cost obviously).....can't spare time at moment to send away - even for a couple of days.
Why neither the display brightness slider nor the F8/F8 brightness function keys cause any change to the display brightness? It used to work but for the past few weeks it's not. I thought that slider was able to override any preset power settings.
Brightness Hot Keys are not working after installing Win 8.1 x64. Along with this Touchpad Lock also not working. I am using Pavillion G6 2225TU Note Book x64 bit.
I recently received a new laptop at work (a few of us have) and we are all having the same issue with this laptop. The function keys F8 and F9, which are labeled to control screen brightness, are not working. I have searched many forums and I cannot find a fix.
Product Name: HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 Product Number: 2CE4140876#ABA Windows Operating System: Windows 7 Enterprise, 64-bit
The screens are so dim it's hard to see the content on them.
I have very annoying problem with hot keys for adjusting monitor brightness! After last version of hot keys driver they don't work. I can't increase or decrease brightness! Pressing them down and can't change anything. And there is something more! For example I have adjusted some level from power manager and everything looks good until I don't try to manage brightness with hot keys. I doesn't matter if i want to increase or decrease brightness, it just goes to maximum level!
I have installed the latest driers and since then I am unable to change the screen brightness using function keys. I have installed multiple driver updates hence it is difficult to find out which driver is causing the issue.
My new W540 has the latest bios & software updates. It won't wake up from sleep...or rather the display won't come on. When I push the power button (pulsing green), it goes to solid green and the fingerprint scanner light turns on, but no screen. I scan my fingerprint and the scanner light turns off, but still no screen. The only way to bring it back to life is a long press on the power button and a reboot.
Nothing plugged into any of the ports. It does this regardless of whether it's plugged in or on battery.
I have a ThinkPad X240 laptop with Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64 installed. Sound plays just fine from the laptop's speakers, and when I plug external speakers into the laptop's 3.5mm audio port they work just fine too. when the laptop is docked in my Ultra Dock 90W docking station and the external speakers cable is plugged into the dock's audio port, no sound is heard. If I'm playing music through the laptop's speakers, as soon as I plug a cable into the dock's audio port no sound is heard. I can still use the laptop's audio port to connect external speakers, but that defeats the object of having an audio port on the Ultra Dock.
The Ultra Dock has (I believe) the latest firmware installed (version 2.22.000) and I have the latest audio drivers installed: in Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers > Realtek High Definition Audio > Driver version is 6.0.1.7188 which is the latest available from Lenovo Support downloads. What do I need to do to get the Ultra Dock's audio port working? I mistakenly posted this message on the "X Series tablet ThinkPad Laptops" board.
