Dec 4, 2013I can't adjust screen brightness using either function key or in control panel. Using the function key the little panel of brightness volume shows up on the screen but does nothing. And in control panel, through either the bottom brightness scroll or the power option won't change anything. Only time when the brightness will change is I unplug the power, but in the power settings it won't let me change/adjust the brightness.
And what is the battery function key for? I press it and it does nothing. XPS L521x

Oct 31, 2011I'm having the same trouble with my brand new 8460p : the brightness of the display can not be adjusted with the function keys (fn+F-keys) while in Windows. In other threads the problem has been solved by installing newest chipset drivers (which was not provided by HP), but in these threads the computer has been an earlier model. 8460p has the new QM67 express chipset and currently I'm running the latest drivers (according to intel's detection web site) for it.
I'm running a fresh install of Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit with all the latest drivers.

But the function keys are not working properly. The volume one work but no OSD. Contrast, and monitor selection one since like it is not working at all.

Jul 25, 2010The function keys on my keyboards are working in the opposite manner. Whenever I press any of the keys from F1 to F12 they perform the multimedia actions or their enhanced action. For example, if I press the F2 key the brightness of my laptop screen would lower. It should not work like this. I should be pressing Fn+F2 for the brightness of my screen to lower. The problem here is that I can't use Alt+F4 to close windows because its reversed, I instead have to press Alf+Fn+F4.
I have already search for an answer online and I can only find that NumLock is supposed to be locked. But, it's a laptop - I have no such key.

Jan 5, 2009This is almost a classic problem. I just installed XP SP3 on a Vaio G11. I did everything according to Sony's plan. But the brightness keys don't work.
Is there a chance that Sony's drivers were written for XP SP2, and that SP3 is the cause of my problems?
Reason I'm thinking this is that SP3 recognized some devices that SP2 doesn't recognize

Apr 4, 2009My laptop has gotten into deep trouble..
Since the last few days, some of the keys have stopped working .. These are mainly the z,x,c,v,b,n,m,space-bar,delete,f8 keys.
Accidentally I minimized the brightness level to lowest level using the fn+f7 key.. and now i cannot bring it up using the fn+f8 key.
I heard that this could be problem due to some malware. However, i ran spybot and antivirus checks and nothing seems to have worked so far. Also, these keys do not even work at the boot time before any OS is loaded. So should i assume that this is a hardware problem?
Currently i am alteast looking for a solution to atleast restore the brightness level.. because its really strainful to look at the dim monitor.. Isn't there any alternative to the fn+f8 key combination?

May 22, 2014I have an HP Envy j011dx that came with Windows 8 Home Edition(64b9t). I put in an SSD and upgraded the ram and installed Win 7 Pro(64bit). Everything is working great except the control keys don't work. When I hit the left ctrl, I get, [9- and the right ctrl, I get, l; I have searched and tried a few different drivers and have looked at some posts about downgrading to 7 and haven't seen anything on this issue. I have ran all windows updates and tried several different drivers. I put the old HD in with W8 and it works so it isn't a hardware issue. I originally looked at this post before doing the downgrade and it gave me the confidence to move forward with putting Win7 on. I have until Friday to take this back to the store if I can't get it working. I have also checked the region/language settings.

Mar 29, 2011I just got the x120e and I already went through and fixed it auto-brightening itself. After I hit the Fn + Home and adjusted it to my preference. It was not on the charger when I did that and I was in a darker room so I had the brightness down lower. Later on in the day, I plugged it in to charge and I went to make it brighter. The brightness is not changing however. All the oher Fn + F keys are working. Just not the two for brightness. The weird thing is, I shut the computer, waited for it to enter sleep mode then opened it up again and it was really bright and I had to pretty much squint, but again the keys were not working to lower it. I closed it again and opened it and it is again dimmer. The keys still aren't working.
