HP/Compaq :: Evo N620c: LCD Screen
May 21, 2009
I initially thought that I was experiencing the typical flickering-to-a-faint-screen shot inverter issue, but 3 inverters later and also 2 LCD replacement panels later (managed to come around multiple panels and inverters known to be working), the flickering-to-no-backlight problem persists. No matter which combination of panel/inverter I connect to the unit, the inverters are buzzing. (Hooking the unit to an external monitor works perfectly still at least.)
Since the LCD has to draw current from the motherboard, is it possible that the motherboard has some kind of problem sending current to the screen or something that's causing all the malfunctioning or even killing all the inverters I had?

Trial and error proved that the Dc Dc board was bad. I swapped it out and the Motherboard now powers up. Now that the board powers up, nothing else works. I have 2 known good sticks of PC2100 Samsung RAM and processor installed. The fan goes on and a LED lights but nothing else. I hooked up a external display and no display..goes right to power save. I am taking baby steps here so what would be next? Could the processor be bad? What needs to be functioning for me to get a display and to BIOS? I picked this up cheap to learn and learn I am. The DVD drive also doesnt work but that is the least if my worries...I just want to get to bios. There is a hard drive installed, too. I do not get any beeps on start up, either

I ordered an extra gigabyte of RAM for my Compaq Evo N620c figuring that it would speed the computer up and make it useful longer. I popped off the RAM cover no problem (under the palmrest in what is one of the worst design decisions I've ever seen) and installed one chip in the first slot with no issues. However when I went to remove the 512MB chip from slot 2 I saw the following:
The second chip is somehow blocked by a piece of the chassis in the top right corner. Consequently I can't figure out how to remove the chip and have no idea how it got there in the first place. Can anyone help out with this one? HP support was worthless, refusing to help even though the unit is under warranty (yes, you read that correctly. My Evo is still under warranty thanks to HP Care Packs).

My friend gave me his broken laptop which is not too old. turion x2, 1gb ram, vista. He said one day he was using it and the screen went black. I turned it on and a fan noose starts but slowly stops. I don't really hear anything from it either. I also hooked it up to a VGA monitor and the it is black as well. Any ideas on what it isand is it easily fixed?

I'm having problems with my hp DV 9500 laptop. It started 2 days ago, on start up my screen is completely red then the windows logo appears with black splayed around the outside edge. When i'm surfing the net some pages are appearing with red patches but apart from this my laptop is working fine. I uninstalled the drivers for the graphics card and re-installed this made no difference. I hooked up an external monitor and that works perfectly,

my screen on my laptop broke as in spider web broke. I have a Compaq Presario V6500Z and I want to know if the Current model HP screens (for example HP Pavilion DV6113US screen) are compatible and interchangable with the compaq since both companies share the same parts.

I've been looking at the dv5t laptops with an infinity display. I just don't know what resolution I should get?
I do you reading glasses. But is the size difference that big of a deal between the two?
Which do you think I should get? 1680 x 1050 OR 1280 x 800?

how the 1080P brightview screen is compared to some other good screens on the market? Anyone have a chance to compare this to the Studio 16 XPS 16 inch RGB screen or the 15.6 1080p screens of the Clevo W860cu or M15x (Among the best 15 inch screens on the market).

last summer I was given a HP Pavillion dv5 that had a little problem with his screen:
The part number of the piece is 484363-001, and it seems it has to be WXGA because of the resolution (1280x800). Is there any problem if it's WSXGA instead?

screen problem on a Compaq nx6125.
Some time ago I was helping a friend troubleshoot her laptop which, among other things, wouldn't display anything on the screen. One of the things I tried was to take the display cable from her laptop's motherboard and connect it directly to my nx6125's screen. A bad idea, as it turns out, because after that my Compaq's screen appeared dead as well. Only the backlight still worked, so the screen was entirely light grey-ish when the laptop was turned on.
Hence question one: can something like that kill a laptop screen?
Anyway, I tried a few things to try and isolate the problem on my Compaq. Connecting an external monitor via VGA showed that the video card was fine, as the picture showed up on the external monitor. I also tried taking another old laptop I have and connecting its screen to my Compaq's display cable. Not smart, yes, considering that's how I busted my Compaq in the first place, but that other laptop is basically a brick anyway, with a non-working screen backlight among other things, and I mostly use it for parts. Anyway, the screen showed a faint picture, which leads me to conclude that the display cable on my Compaq is fine and that it is indeed the screen itself that's busted.
Question two: is there anything else I could check, or any repairs to attempt, before springing for a new screen on eBay?
Speaking of a new screen, there are two different ones available on eBay for the nx6125 - XGA and SXGA+. The laptop originally came with an XGA screen, and I wouldn't mind upgrading to SXGA+ while I'm at it, but I want to be sure the screen is 100% compatible.
So question three: are the screens availble on eBay in general, and the SXGA+ screens in particular, a 100% fit for my nx6125?

If you buy a notebook from HP with this screen option, can one be assured that the physical LED panel is free of fingerprints, dust, lint etc before it was closed off with the "infinity" cover?
I've read some bad reviews about this design and a lot of people are complaining about dust, lint, etc somehow getting inside between the LED panel and the "infinity" panel. Also I've heard complaints about the keyboard scratching the "infinity" panel when the lid is closed (there is no space between the "infinity" panel and the keys apparently...
I'm not sure which to get, with or without "infinity?" I like the clean look the "infinity" gives but I don't like the regular screen bezel with regards to the webcam...instead of only seeing a small circle with a lense like you do with the "infinity" panel, you see the entire 'housing' of the webcam in the bezel...it looks kinda tacky to me. Also a lot of people have complained about the "infinity" displays being less vibrant, dull and washed out with HUGE glare issues.

this isn't the monitor. Just to be clear on that. But I can't figure exactly what is wrong with my cousin's laptop.
You boot it it displays "HP" logo and little info at the bottom. Asks for the password (you enter it)... then a black screen. With the _ blinking in the left to top (center-ish) corner.
Not even the XP screen comes on. I have had OS on other PCs and it usually tells you if the OS is screwed up or not. But nothing here. I think it's his HDD. I went to the bios and found a "test hdd" thing. And tried it twice. it went to 20% and failed. And the HDD makes no noise.
So is the OS died or HDD need replacing? I rather work on on then mess with the wrong issue lol. He had pics on the HDD still so by any means I need to recover those.

my housemate has a HP G6000...When she turns it on the laptop starts (ie. CPU/HDD and optical disk drive all start up fine and sound normal) but the screen remains completely black, no flicker whatsoever...I opened up the laptop and moved the ram modules around as a suggestion on old posts i found..It did no good...Also i could see the GPU and saw no evidence of it being burntout at all..
If i connect it to an external monitor and it worked would that rule out a GPU failure?
And would that mean a connection is loose somewhere?

I've spent a while now reading through the forums for both the 1st and 2nd gen 15" Envys. My first gen Envy, purchased 3 weeks ago suffered the dreaded black screen issue, which was identified by turning the machine on and leaving it for a while - could be 10 minutes, could be hours and the screen would go black, system would lock up and require a hard reboot. Oddly enough the hard drive packed up after a couple of weeks use. I replaced the drive myself with a new western digital Scorpio, but the symptoms still occurred.
Having bought the unit from a retailer, I took it back and had the last remaining gen 1, which was their display unit (i prefer the lower res screen for gaming-better performance at native res). To date I have not had a single black screen. The drivers and software are exactly the same, which kind of ruined my idea that it may be drivers causing the issue, so I'm very intrigued as to what may be causing the issue.
I'd like to keep this thread solely to covering this issue as it seems to be affecting users of both first and 2nd gen units, so feel free to post your experiences of this exact problem and any remedies you may have discovered, as it took me ages to find like minded users in the massive general Envy threads! Maybe we can get enough information to help the Hp techs, as I really think this unit is otherwise a very good performer!

if I opened the screen anymore than 4-5 inches, it would freeze half the screen and turn the over half into a complete jumbled mess. I ordered replacement screen about 2 months ago, and w/ me being lazy and all, it's been sitting on my office floor. I've been using the laptop daily, but instead it stays on my desk and is running through an Acer desktop monitor w/o any issues whatsoever.
So I brokedown and started installing the new screeen today, only to get this when I switched the output back over to the laptop:
It made an audible whining noise both times I switched over, so I quickly switched it off. At this point I'm wondering if the cable from the motherboard to the screen is the issue, but I don't wanna keep throwing parts at a computer this only cost me $250 brand new.
Also, when I finally get this figured out...I can't remember which plug this mic connector goes into.
It can either go here next to the keyboard cable or over here by the fan.
