I have a old hp zv5000 and it seems to randomly shut down, the problem is very peculiar. The battery on the hp cant hold charge for more than 10 minutes but the problem lies in the charger/laptop itself. The charger only seems to be able to charge the battery and the system only seems to runs on battery power, the battery runs out and the system shuts down (without any notice). When the battery is taken out of the system, it fails to start up.
i am guessing somewhere in the mobo :S since the laptop itself cant turn on external power when the battery is disconnected and only seem to run off battery power.

I have a HP pavillion zv5000 notebook. It is used it belonged to a family member. I went to HP online and ordered the recovery disks so i could clear it out. The recovery is like nonew i have ever seen before. I have done a recovery from disk on a desk top before. I switched my BIOS to read disk first. my set came with 2 disks a windows operating system CD and a applications and driver DVD. well i placed the first in and it ran asked about partitioned space HP told me to delete and create new so i did it ran but never asked for the 2nd disk. after windows installed i waited for it to ask for 2nd never did so i put it in. It registers through my computer in the D:/ drive but will not auto run.

I have a HP Pavilion zv5000 laptop that all of the sudden goes into hibernation on me. When it restarts it has error message indicating that the computer should be plugged in -but it is always plugged in. I don't use it on the battery except on rare occassion.
The blue charge light is on at times, not at other times, sometimes blinking. I don't see any pattern in the problem.

i am upgrading the RAM and was considering a new hard drive as well. however, i am confused on what should work especially because the laptop is getting old. i do not need a ton of GB, 60 would be fine. my goal was to get a faster one. could anyone post a link of some from tiger direct that might work? is 7200 my limit? would 10000 work?
i found this link but it is from 2007:
The ATA/100 EIDE is what you need to look at for a new HDD.
I think this would be about the best deal: [url]
should this work?

I recently recieved HP dv5-1119nr as a gift for Christmas. It has a Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit OS. I am a DJ and Use Numarks Virtual Vinyl audio Interface which is for my turntables. I have no complaints with the notebook. Unfortunately, the interface is not compatible with 64-Bit, and according to Numark may not be anytime soon. I had a friend upload his Vista 32-Bit OS for me to download, as a matter of fact he sent me two to choose from. I have (frustratingly) tried multple times to burn and re-install a 32-Bit system. I have tried using Cyberlink DVD Suite to save the .iso file (I understand that). It shows up looking like a winrar file, but in properties it does say .iso. Once burn is finished I try to reboot. Under BIOS, CD Drive is enabled and first. But it doesn't Boot! Upon looking at the disc it shows 2 files; BOOTCTG.BIN and BOOTIMG.BIN. What am I doing wrong?

Just bought a new 2.5 HDD for my laptop. It's suppose to arrive tomorrow and I thought I'd get on the front side of the installation. Is there anything I should be knowing beyond a simple 'unscrew the bay cover on the bottom of the dv7, unscrew and remove the old drive, unscrew the old drive from the caddy, screw the new drive into the caddy, place the new drive/caddy assembly into the same bay, push the assembly into the connector slot, screw the caddy down, button up the dv7, and do a clean install of Windows 7'? I've been told that I may have to do some special type of reformatting before initial and first use of the new drive or else it may not work properly. Is this true?
I've also heard that some BIOS adjustments might allow me to use both the old and new drives,... true? Will using a 7200 rpm drive in one bay along with a 5400 rpm drive in the second bay cause problems? If not, should I dedicate the faster drive to holding data or elect for it to be the boot drive?
I've tried finding something on HP's site with very little success.

is there any way I can re-claim Vista's recovery partition.
When I try to install XP, I can only see the one ~ 130 GB partition - which I cannot delete (?!?!) and then I guess I am missing the ~ 90 GB recovery partition.
What do I need to do so that I wipe everything out and do my partitions as I like and install XP ?
my system is a dv2000, AMD; if you need any other info, I'll try to get them, however, the system is not booting now (that's why I want to re-install the OS)

I'm trying to install XP on my machine after I fried old HD that had W7 installation. I bought new HD but i only have XP CD so i figured I'll install XP so far to get the PC up and ruining, and upgrade to W7 once i find by back-up CD.
My new HD is picked up by machine, and CD starts with installation, copying files from the CD, but only up to the point where it is supposed to start with windows installation.
At that point I get blue screen and message telling me i do not have HD or it is incorrectly installed and that I should run check disk. I've run BIOS scan, and HD is present and scans OK. Is it possible that previous install of W7 is memorized somewhere in BIOS and it is not allowing me to install XP even though HD is blank and brand new?

Does anyone know if it's relatively easy to install your own SSD into a 2140...I like everything about it except the $575 charge for upgrading the drive to an 80GB SSD.
Having said that I don't need anywhere close to that much storage, even a 16GB would probably be enough for me and Newegg has them for

I have a problem installing xp64 on my notebook (dv7 3020ed).
The system is provided with windows 7 x64 but i don't like the OS, allso it has a lot of HP junk installed on it, witch im not planning to use.
I'm using this pc for my work when im not at the office.
(webdesign e.d.)
Now i have tried to install xp x64, but i couldn't find a sata driver, i tried to set ahci to ide but the bios does not allow to change the settings.
I have tried it with an other hp raid driver on a floppy but it didn't fix my problems..
I would realy like to fix it, because i bought xp x64 and i can't reinstall windows 7 because it is pre installed.. so i have no CD.
Sure i could delete the programs, but i want a clean install.

I have an HP dv5t which I purchased new last October. A couple of weeks ago, my HD got fried (think it overheated). HP sent me a new HD, and I had a technician install it for me. I never made recovery disks as instructed by HP (was gonna get around to it; who knew the HD would die in 9 mos?). The tech ended up installing Vista Ultimate Lite instead, which I thought was okay b/c there's no bloatware that way. However, I miss a lot of the elements of the Aero environment, particularly Windows DVD Maker.
I have two questions:
1. Can I get backup CDs from HP to reinstall Vista Home Premium (which is what my lappie was shipped with)? Would doing so reinstall the bloatware?
2. Is there a way to tweak Vista Ultimate Lite so I can have the standard GUI w/o putting bloatware back in my system? The environment in Ultimate Lite reminds me too much of XP (clunky-looking windows, fonts are too large, etc).

The HDX18 is now being offered with a 160gb SSD + a 500gb HDD 5400 option. HP won't disclose which SSDs are being installed. If anyone has one of these units,
Also, an HP rep told me that the OS is being installed on the HDD (which is a silly thing to do) rather than the SSD at the factory.

I'm thinking about formating and installing fresh, I have read the Out-Of-Box guide. But I have a little doubt. After installing OS, which drivers do I need to install. I mean, like there are two drivers available under Graphics for my laptop(HP dv6-1387tx). Similarly, for other categories like Network, there are more than one drivers listed. Which one should I choose? Should I install all under the categories. Since, I selected the exact model, all should be applicable to my laptop. Here's the link to all drivers and softwares -

My HP recovery discs got corrupted. I read around about making new set by moving/renaming HPCD.sys and it didn't work. I contacted HP to get new set of discs and they want to me charge equivalent to USD50. I am in no mood to pay them this much sum.
A friend of mine has a store bought XP CD and I have trial version of XP. I was wondering if I install using any of these CDs and use XP key that my HP machine came with, will it fly? Has anyone tried it? Whats the result?
Plus, I must mention that my HP came with Swedish OS and the discs I have are English OS.

I just got one of these the other day and in order to remove all the bloatware, update to SP1 and more, I went and installed a clean Vista, even backing and rhacked by pcaestoring the activation (as the thread about using ABR says).
After this, I download every single driver from the HP support page and went through installing them (of couse, the latest version of each and even other bloatware such as help files, wireless assistant, etc.). The thing is that, after everything was installed, I was still having a "yellow unknow device" in the device manager. After much thinking, I guessed that what was missing were the QuickLaunch buttons, because none of the QuickPlay buttons in the keyboard work, neither the "eject" button for the optical drive. But that QuickLaunch wasn't listed in HP drivers. All there was is a Quick Launch Security Update, but not the actual drivers!
After much searching without hope, I tried one last thing: to let windows install those drivers by searching in Windows Update. Amazingly it worked and they were installed as, efectively, the Quick Launch Buttons! But the problem is that those still don't work! The volume mute, slider, treble and bass work (but make no sound when touched, even though they are activated in the Control Panel - Quick Touch), but the QuickPlay, DVD, TV and Eject still don't work!
Also note that before even trying to use Windows Update, I went and installed every single driver (again, not drivers that were outdated to the ones in HP support and I already installed) in the SwSetup folder: still no luck. For what I read in a thread, there should be (?) a QLB folder that would have the Quick Launch Buttons? Well... I didn't had it...................
