Acer :: How To Increase 5920G RAM
Nov 24, 2008I am a "silver surfer" who is starting to enjoy "playing" and "tweaking" my Acer Aspire 5920G on pre-installed Vista SP1 as a little hobby to pass the time
So far I have confined myself to dabbling with software and Vista itself but am now thinking about becoming more adventurous and upgrading the RAM from present 2GB to 4GB.
Firstly, is this a worthwhile upgrade bearing in mind I do not run any particularly intensive applications? In other words will I notice a performance difference in,for instance, boot times etc ?
Secondly, a few months ago I think I saw an article or thread in this Forum explaining how to increase the RAM in a 5920G and containing a couple of very useful diagrams.
Dell :: Can't Increase Display Brightness
Jan 20, 2009Everything had been fine until I did some updates, can't remember if this occurred after a video driver update or a BIOS update.
But now the display brightness maxes out at about half. When I hit Fn + up arrow, it starts off at about half and the little meter does go up (the sunshine puts on his shades), but the display brightness doesn't change at all.

Mar 31, 2010I remember on vista I was playing dirt 2 for a while, and the main menu music sounded incredible. Awesome deep loud sound.
Now on win 7, It seems do dull and lifeless and low. I have the latest realtek HD drivers for the 5920g. Everything is on max. Played around with the settings.
The speakers are capable of so much more, need more power delivered to them, NOT just a higher equaliser setting. Its so annoying having the volume on 100% and not being able to hear much.
Does anyone know of a way or modified drivers that boost the sound up? Such a shame, you should be able to use the speakers to capacity. I.e the point at which they start to distort is where you stop. I need at least 200% volume to achieve this.
Also what 64 bit druvers from realtek offer the best quality sound? Has anyone exprimented with this? I id notice a difference between versions in the past on vista.

May 31, 2010I just got a new envy 15 the other day. There is a high pitched noise that is kind of annoying, but I'll be using the laptop at a cafe 90% of the time and probably won't notice it. I'm pretty happy with the laptop otherwise.
Does anybody have any tips on increasing the battery life? Other than screen brightness and lowering the "maximum processor state" in the power plan, are there any other settings i should be aware of? I've read posts claiming to have increased battery life of an i7 envy 15 to 4-5+ hours. I think I'll be pretty happy if I can squeeze 3+ hours on my i5...

Nov 16, 2014Many of the newer more demanding games require that a certain amount of RAM is virtually dedicated to your graphics card, and after hours of trying to figure out how to do that I came up empty. On most desktops and some laptops you can go into the BIOS and change it, but not on the HP Envy 17t (Tried updating BIOS). I'm really not sure how much of a difference it would make for gameplay, but considering how I have an extra 11 gb of RAM when I'm rarely using more than 4 gigs it'd be nice to be able to put some of it to use. There's also a few games I want to play that require a minimum amount to even be launched at all (COD: AW).
OS: Windows 8.1

Nov 24, 2012I have a new z500 that I've downgraded to Windows 7 64bit. For the most part I have everything working. I accidentally hit the brightness + (yes, +) and it instantly dimmed the screen to where it is barely viewable. It seems that hitting that one key decreased the brightness to the minimum amount. I've rebooted, looked for a setting in the BIOS, hit the Brightness +/- and can't increase the brightness. It is interesting because the other hot keys work correctly. I've even upped the brightness in the Control Panel, but nothing seems to work. The screen is extremely dim whenever the machine is powered on (including the BIOS), not just in Windows. I tried a lot of intel chipset drivers, the available Intel HD 4000 drivers in Win8 and win7 too, but nothing working. How to up the brightness?

Jan 12, 2009I may be wrong but it looks like dell ireland have increased all the prices in their small business site by 10%! The base prices are the same but upgrading anything is now 10% more expensive.
Just from looking at precision laptops.
Upgrade to 64bit os was 50 euro, now 55 euro.
Component example, yesterday it cost 440 euro to update the graphics card on a m6400 from a FX2700M to a FX3700M, today it costs 490 for the same upgrade

Feb 15, 2009I'm trying to diagnose this model for a friend: Aspire 3100-1556
The screen is too dark to use. The brightness feature via the function key doesn't help. It does make an instantaneous brightness when pressing it, but it stays dark, doesn't hold more than a split second.
Windows XP IS loading; that much can be seen when looking hard enough. So this isn't an operating system issue. It's there, just can't see it well enough to use.
I have been told elsewhere that it could be the inverter, but as I am new to repairing laptops, I really need more info before asking my friend to spend money on one.

Jan 7, 2015I have a pretty good amount of knowledge behind computer software, and hardware operations. I am aware of the fact that the fan will increase speed according to increased temperature of CPU, and other components. However, is the fan supposed to periodically, turn on and off, each occurrence running at full speed for 10-20 seconds, then shut off again? How about the same question, when the laptop is physically(meaning you can feel it) hot? I don't think that this is a hardware issue. I've recently had a hard drive fail on me, and had another hard drive(same exact model hard drive) installed, and Windows 8 reinstalled. I think somewhere along the lines of the OS reinstallation process, some drivers were probably missed and this might be causing the issue. On the other hand, the fan in this laptop is the same one from the factory, which makes it 4 years old. What is the lifetime on the fans in the Inspiron N7110?

Jan 21, 2009I'm trying to figure out the difference between the two other than the casing (one's metal and one's plastic). The 2140 uses a SATA connector vs a PATA connector. So for $25 extra(lowest config 2140 vs highest config 1000) you get a metal case and SATA connector?
Why would anyone buy the 1000? Am I missing something? Oh and the 2140 has a higher volatage adapter for 'fast charging'...what's left for the 1000?

I understand that this graphics "card" uses the onboard memory to act as video memory. How can I increase or decrease the amount of memory allocated to the graphics? I don't seem to be able to make any changes from the BIOS. Is this something that adjusts automatically?

Apple :: Unibody - Battery Life - Fans Were Not Spinning Up To Counter The Increase In Heat
Feb 5, 2009my new 15" unibody.
I was having bad battery life (under 2 hours) And noticed my fans were not spinning up to counter the increase in heat.
I called Apple and they had me reset my PRAM. With that done the system worked fine for a day.
Currently my Unibody will not stay connected to any wireless networks. I have tried 2 of my own routers and a friends. It will not stya connected, either on AC or battery.
Next issue involves CPU hitting 95c before the fan go past 2k rpm. Try and and play wow and the system locks up when the CPU hits 98c and the fans are still at 2k. Tried reseting the PRAM again, no luck.
