S440. I prefer to use the function keys F1-F12 without using the Fn key. It seems like in other models there is an option in the BIOS to change this, but not on my machine. Also the Lenovo software nor Windows configuration seems to be able to change this. Is there anyway to do this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an S440. I've had it for one week. Two days ago I downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store. Since then, when I start up the computer, it doesn't even taken me to the 'sign in' screen. There's just a black screen. When I move the cursor, it briefly appears, flickers, then disappears again.
I understand this is an issue with the graphics drivers. So I ran Windows in safemode and disabled Intel R HD Graphics family and AMD Radeon HD 8600 series graphics drivers.
This, unfortunately, hasn't fixed the problem. It still boots to a black screen with an occasionally flickering cursor. I'm currently running in safemode.
I keep getting a message on my laptop: Catalyst control center: host application has stopped working.
This has started happening after I tried to do a BIOS update last week and I ended up with the blue screen of death & had to recover my whole laptop.
when I try to install the Windows 8 copy I got with my Lenovo S440 in a virtual box environment
the installation procedure hangs on the windows splash screen. I never saw a Windows 8 installation
procedure before, so I booted my laptop from the installation media to check if it is corrupted.
This works fine. A loading dot circle is displayed under the logo after a few seconds and than after quiet
a while the lenovo wizard is shown... so it has to be an issue with the virtual box.
I attached a screenshot to show you where it hangs.
I have a problem we need to fix because it shutdowns production. The Up and Left Navigation keys, and the Del Keys (Ent in German) do not work properly. We have press for about 5 long seconds to make them work.All stuffn Ease of Access,Keyboard is turned off and does not solve the solution.
Problem exists on IE, Word, Excel.

Is there any way to change the default behavior of the function keys (e.g., F1, F2, F3...) back to function keys like all other computers? When using Excel, it is extremely annoying not to be able to access key one-key functions like F2 and F4.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy laptop has a keyboard where i have to use the FN key to use the function keys at the top, instead of having to press the FN key to use the action keys. ive been looking everywhere for a way to make it so i dont have to press the FN key to use my function keys, i looked at the bios but i dont see an option to disable the action keys, nor can i find an option anywhere elce in my laptop to set it like that, id even embrace an option to go into the registry to swap the on/off signal of the FN key.

I use the basic functionality of the F-keys all the time, when renaming files, searching and so on, and I would like to be able to use them without having to press "fn" every time.
I recently purchased an Ideapad P400, and I have noticed that the default for the keys where F1 and F2, etc. usually are, are now the mute and volume buttons. To access the F1, F2....F12 keys, you now have to press Fn + your desired F key.
While I understand many people probably find this useful, I play several games where these keys are essential, and it makes playing the games nearly impossible to play if you have to hold down the Fn key in addition to the desired F key. So my question is, is it possible to reverse the Function keys? I would much rather press Fn + F1 to mute than have to press press Fn + F1 to access F1.

I recently downgraded my G710 from Windows 8 (which it came with), to Windows 7. The only issue I've noticed is that it does not display anything on screen when you use the function keys, such as the volume up or down, or bright ness up or down. The keys work, but it would be nice to see on screen that my volume is set at 2% vs say 100% when I'm turning it up or down.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a problem, normally I press Fn and F5 to bring up the window to enable/disable Wireless Lan and Bluetooth. But it's suddenly stopped working and I cannot switch on my Wireless Lan.
This is on IdeaPad Y580 running Windows 7.
1. When I press Fn F5 no window opens.
2. When I press Fn F6 my track pad is enabled/disabled as normal, although I do not see the notification on screen.
3. When I press the Fn and volume or brightness controls, they work perfectly, but again I do not notification on screen, the bars showing level of volume or brightness.
4. Also the One Touch Recovery and One Key Theater buttons are not working. But the audio Mute button is working.
5. I have uninstalled the Lenovo Energy Management software and reinstalled it but no difference.
6. I have checked the BIOS and Wireless Lan is enabled.
7. I also saw that in Task Manager I cannot see utility.exe running.
I've bought Lenovo M490s notebook one week ago without OS. I've installed Windows 7 Professional x64 retail.First of all I could not find software that controls Function keys. After installing every driver and software from support page (M490s) my function keys just doesnt work except Fn+F1 sleep, Fn+F2 turn off the screen, Fn+F6 disable touchpad and play buttons. Also no information was displaying on the screen after pressing such buttons - no volume and brightness level.
After doing some research I've found and installed Hotkey Features Integration from Lenovo M490 (without S) support page. Every function key is started to work, information on the screen also begin to display (volume and brightness level).Now I spotted a huge problem, after 3 or 4 hibernation volume and brightness keys (fn+up,down,left,right) just stopping to work!!! Fn+F1-F12 combinations are working normal. Then after reboot brightness and volume keys are working again!!
I need the functions keys to act like F1-F12 instead of the various operations they represent. How do I change them back to the legacy functions?

i can't boot on an USB key, the secure boot is desabled and when i press enter to boot on the USB key nothing happen. I had tested with 3 different usb key and 2 different OS. And it work on other laptop i have a lenovo twist... i think its in the BIOS but i had check all options

1) The indicator of microphone mutation is not on when I mute it.
2) F7~F12 are not working w/o Fn function.
I tried to start the Lenovo microphone mute and the Lenovo hotkey client loader, but they gave me error 1075: the dependency service does not exist or has been marked deletion. Then I installed the dependency package and the Hotkey integration (the latest version), but same thing happened.
I've got the 12inch thinkpad yoga. The left shift key works intermittently. This started happening to me a couple of weeks ago (I've had the computer since December and haven't noticed a problem. I sent it in twice and supposedly, they replaced the whole machine this last time, but I'm still having the problem. Could this be a fault in this model in general?

is there any possibility to make boot from SD Card on Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga?
I have live linux image, but there are no optical drive on system, so I would be glad to use the SD Card slot. When start with boot selection, there no SD Card slot listed even if I have the bootable SD Card inserted into. On other system the same card booting properly.
Are there some bois settings to allow booting from SD Card slot, so it will be included in boot device list? The same system boot from USB, but USB consume one USB port, so the SD Card is more preferable option.
Is there a possibility of installing a 3G/LTE module on the Thinkpad Yoga? To my understanding there is an m.sata slot on the Yoga that allows for us to put extra SSD hard drives on it. Is it possible to replace it?
If not, are there other methods other than using usb-dongles or hotspots?
I would upgrade the ram from 8 to 16 gb.

two days ago my Lenovo Twist S230u laptop started to freeze a lot, especially when I tried to multitask (like switching to a separate window). It probably took ten minutes each time for the computer to unfreeze and continue.
the in-built 'Lenovo Solutin Center' software ran an automatic diagnostic test, and said that the laptop failed the SMART short-self test (unfortunately I forgot to copy the error code). I didn't think much of it at the time since my laptop is only 5-months old. Just in case, I performed a disk cleanup, disk defrag and made sure everything is up to date. This was when the laptop began to freeze quite a lot. In desperation (and stupidity), I typed the chkdsk /r command in command prompt and asked it to run at reboot. Apparently the SMART short self test is a physical problem rather than a software problem, so obviously chkdsk won't work.
chkdsk ran for about two days now which is clearly too long for a 500gb HDD laptop. I've only used about half of this space too. I forced a shut down and now I cannot access Windows 8.1 through the boot menu (it just hangs on a black screen). Loading a rebootable USB recovery drive is not doing anything too.
I previously sought support on the Microsoft Answers website. They said that my 'hard disk is failing' and I will need to have my HDD replaced.I just want a second opinion here. Is warranty valid under this circumstance? From what I remember, 'Lenovo Solution Center' said I still had a few hundred days of warranty left on the machine.
